Impact of Tourism on Social Economic Development of Kabale Municipality Kabale District.
The study was about assessing the contribution of tourism to the socio-economic development of the Kabale District. The study was guided by three objectives which were: to examine the Contributions of tourism to economic development in Kabale Municipality, Kabale District, to investigate the impacts of tourism towards economic development in Kabale District, to examine possible constraints to tourism development in Kabale Municipality, Kabale District. A targeted population was fifty-six (56) respondents who were considered for the study. These included senior staff, Head Guide, Manager, Tourists, Community members Local government officials. Both simple random and purposive sampling techniques in identifying the study sample population. The methods that were used in data collection included surveys, observations, and interviews. Data collected was edited, coded, entered into the computer, and analyzed with Excel, a Microsoft statistical package, the results were presented in tables. According to the findings, 100% of the respondents agreed that there were several contributions of tourism to economic development in Kabale municipality, Kabale district included: Boosting scale industry revenues, Boosting revenue of the economy, developing infrastructures, a sense of cultural exchange between foreigners and citizens, job opportunities, source of foreign exchange earnings, tourism are often regarded as a tool in rural development. The study revealed the impacts of tourism on economic development in Kabale Municipality, Kabale Municipality, and Kabale District and these included tourism can encourage the displacement of locals, tourism can leave a large carbon footprint, a large number of moving visitors into an area push up the price of goods and services, decline in traditional employment which happens when workers move from industries such as farming. From objective three, the study indicated the relationship between tourism and social Economic Development, through the provision of small or micro enterprises for certain citizens, through infrastructure to support the tourist market or trade including factors like good airports, security, hotels and roads, tourism can create employment opportunities for local communities, tourism can contribute to the overall economic growth of a region or country by generating income through expenditures on accommodation, food, transportation, and entertainment, tourism facilitates cultural exchange between tourists and locals, promoting mutual understanding and appreciation, tourism can contribute to government revenue through taxes, fees, and permits, tourism can help diversify the economy of a destination, reducing dependence on a single industry
Design and Construction of a Pneumatic Vibratory Conveyer.
Tea, an aromatic beverage, is made by steeping hot water over cured or fresh leaves of Camellia taliensis. Typical tea processing stages include withering, rolling, oxidation, sieving, and firing. This project focused on designing a pneumatic-powered vibratory conveyor specifically for sieving tea leaves at the Kigezi Highland Tea Factory, Kabale branch. Vibratory conveyors are durable systems used to transport or sieve materials ranging from fine to coarse grains in workshops or factories. The project aimed to create a pneumatic-powered vibratory conveyor for industrial settings, offering lower power input and higher load capacity than traditional electric vibratory conveyors. At Kigezi Highland Tea Factory, the existing electric conveyor faces challenges, such as limited load capacity and high power consumption, which this design addresses. The new conveyor is designed to handle up to 25 kg, significantly more than the current 6 kg limit, and reduces energy consumption through pneumatic power. The system features a motor-driven single-stage compressor that supplies compressed air to two vibrators on the conveyor trough, enabling material transport and sieving. Designed for transferring and sieving tea leaves, the conveyor’s large trough surface allows for increased load capacity and enhanced sieving efficiency. Design methods included AutoCAD for 2D illustrations and sizing, MATLAB for calculations and vibration analysis, SOLIDWORKS for 3D modeling of the trough, frame, and components, and ANSYS for system analysis
Enhancing Local Governance through Community-Driven Participatory Decision-Making: A Case Study in Kabale District, Uganda.
This study explores the enhancement of local governance through community-driven participatory decision-making in Kabale District, Uganda. Despite the significance of local governance in promoting sustainable development, many communities face challenges related to marginalization and limited citizen engagement. This research aimed to assess the effectiveness of participatory decision-making frameworks in fostering local
governance, with specific objectives to evaluate community involvement, identify barriers to participation, and recommend strategies for improvement. The study combines qualitative and quantitative data collected through surveys, focus group discussions, and interviews with local leaders and community members, the primary data was obtained from the United NationsHabitat. The findings reveal that while community participation has increased in recent years, significant gaps remain in terms of inclusivity and awareness of governance processes. Barriers identified include socio-economic disparities, lack of education, and insufficient communication from local authorities. The study concludes that enhancing local governance in Kabale requires a robust framework for participatory decision-making that prioritizes inclusivity and empowerment. This study recommends fostering community education programs, improving transparency in governance processes, and utilizing technology to facilitate
better communication. By addressing these challenges, Kabale District can improve local governance outcomes, ultimately leading to more responsive and effective governance that reflects the needs and aspirations of its citizens
Climate change–Drylands–Food Security Nexus in Africa: From the Perspective of Technical Advances, Challenges, and Opportunities.
Climate change impacts on drylands pose more vexing risks to socio-ecological systems, resulting in food security issues, biodiversity loss, and livelihood shifts in Africa. This study critically reviewed relevant literature to evaluate the complexities and feedback loops between the climate–drylands–food security (CDF) nexus, which helps assess tactics to attain sustainable dryland ecosystem management under the changing environment. Comprehensive CDF frameworks are explored for dryland dynamics, ecosystem services, and food security (FS), and current high-precision ecosystem observation networks are used to detect regional-level
climate variability and identify hotspots. In addition, this review also examines challenges and uncertainties for CDF systems and effective agrarian innovations as a way forward. To bridge the gap from science to policy making in the CDF nexus, it
is vital to enhance the impacts and feedback of ecohydrological processes on agrarian production, ecosystem service tradeoffs and their effects on livelihoods, and regional development and preservation by optimization of the ecological water security pattern. Design and Prototype of an Indoor Air Quality Monitoring System: A Case Study of Maternity Ward at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital.
This project develops a Smart Indoor Air Quality Monitoring System for the maternity ward at KRRH, aimed at ensuring a safe environment for mothers and newborns. The purpose is to create an automated system that monitors air quality and temperature, ensuring optimal conditions in the maternity ward. The system uses an Arduino Uno with a DHT11 temperature and humidity sensor and an MQ135 air quality sensor. Data is displayed on a 16x2 LCD with I2C, and alerts are sent via a GSM module when thresholds are exceeded. A DC motor functions as an extractor fan for temperature and air quality control, and a red LED has very low humidity in the circulating air. The system successfully monitors and displays real-time temperature and air quality data. It sends alerts and activates responses (fan and LED) when predefined thresholds are surpassed. The prototype effectively integrates sensor data with real-time monitoring and alert capabilities, ensuring a safe maternity environment. Future improvements should focus on sensor calibration and system responsiveness to enhance reliability and functionality
A Comprehensive Study About the Contribution of Human Activities to The Pollution of River Rwabakazi Through its Tributaries Around Kabale Town.
Water is the most crucial factor in shaping the land and regulating the climate. It is an important component of living beings as it performs unique and indispensable activities on earth, ecosystems, biosphere, and biochemical cycles. The freshwater ecosystems of the world comprise only about 0.5% of the earth’s surface and have a volume of 2.84x105 Km3. Rivers constitute an insignificant amount (0.1%) of the land surface. Only 0.01% of the waters of the earth occur in river channels. In spite of these low quantities, running waters are of enormous significance (Wetzel, 2001). River Rwabakazi is a crucial natural resource in Kabale Town, Uganda. It supports diverse ecosystems, provides water for domestic use, agriculture, and industry, and sustains local biodiversity. The river's health is directly linked to the well-being of the communities that depend on it for their livelihoods. Ensuring the sustainability of this water resource is vital for maintaining ecological balance and supporting socio-economic development in the region. Numerical Investigation on the Effects of Embedding PVC Pipes in Reinforced Concrete Beams.
This study focused on how embedded PVC pipes affected the way reinforced concrete (RC) beams behaved. One of the six 300x300x3500mm beams that were modeled in Abaqus was solid, and the other five (B-25.4mm, B-50.8mm, B-76.2mm, B-101.6E50mm, and B-127E100mm) had different pipe sizes and locations. The material properties both elastic and plastic were assigned to the models and also contained concrete damaged plasticity (CDP) material qualities to effectively forecast failure processes. A concentrated load of 500KN was loaded onto the modeled beams and treated as simply supported. In addition, meshing was finished, with reinforcing meshing with global mesh with a global size of 100mm and concrete elements assigned to element type C3D8R hexagonal elements. After the analysis was turned in, the results were compared to those of a solid beam, including stresses, strains, the load-deflection ductility index, and crack patterns. The results indicated that the stresses in the bottom reinforcement and concrete increased as the pipe size grew. Furthermore, the ductility index and loading capacity declined with changes in pipe placement and size. Therefore, the location and size of the pipe affect the strength, stiffness, and ductility of the reinforced concrete
Effect of Board Accountability on Financial Performance of Selected SACCOs in Kiruhura District, Uganda.
Board accountability and Financial Performance are significant concepts among SACCOs in Uganda due to their involvement in the financial intermediation process. In spite of the several interventions by Bank Uganda, a number of banks and other financial institutions have failed to operate forcing the regulators to intervene to ensure sanity in the financial system. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of corporate governance on the financial performance of SACCOs in Kiruhura District, Uganda and the specific objective was; To examine the effect of board accountability on the financial performance of selected SACCOs in Kiruhura District, In this study, a cross-sectional survey research design was employed, adopting quantitative and qualitative approaches research approaches. A total population of 342 people was used at a confidence level of 95% or an error of 0.05
and the sample size was 184 respondents who involved the staff and members taken from the six SACCOs registered in Kiruhura district, Uganda as of January 2023. The obtained data for analysis was divided into two phases. First, descriptive statistics on the respondents and the preliminary data analysis were performed using SPSS version 20.0. These statistics included multicollinearity, mean and standard deviation, outliers and extreme values, and missing values in the second phase, the structural relationships between the variables in the suggested conceptual model were tested and examined using structural equation modeling (SEM). Jaffrey’s Amazing Statistical Program (JASP) version 0.17.2.0 was used to implement SEM. The findings of the study were: The effect of board accountability (BAC) on financial performance was found to have a negative effect ( = -0.908), implying that the data failed to support the direct relationship between BAC and FiP, thus not supporting H01, Therefore the study concludes that SACCOS will do less well financially the more its board assumes accountability for the company's decisions and communicates them openly to
stakeholders. The study recommends that the board of directors should be more effective in ensuring that they communicate the decisions clearly and appropriately so that SACCO maximizes shareholders' wealth. SACCOs should seek the best strategies for communicating and sharing accountability feedback with SACCO members to generate maximum benefits for everyon
Prevalence of and Risk factors associated with hypertension: a community based- cross sectional study in Ndorwa West Health Sub District, Kabale district, southwestern Uganda.
Globally, one billion people have hypertension (HT), it kills 9.4 million people annually. Prevalence is higher in developed countries and is rapidly rising in developing countries, and approximately 31.5% of Ugandans have HT. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of and risk factors associated with HT among adults aged 25–65 years in the Ndorwa West HSD, Kabale District. A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted with 381 adults aged 25–65 years in Ndorwa West HSD, using a modified WHO STEPwise approach to chronic disease risk factor surveillance. Chi-square tests with 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) and p-values less than 0.05, were used to assess the association between hypertension and associated factors. Odds Ratios (OR) with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) estimated the risk. The prevalence of HT and pre-HT in Ndorwa HSD was 28.3% and 45.7%, respectively. 61.8% (n = 243) were females and 36.1% (n = 142) were males with a mean age of 48.18 years and standard deviation of 11.5 years. The mean Body Mass Index (BMI) was 25.92 kg/m2 and the standard deviation was 3.69 kg/m2. Only Age (p = 0.010, OR = 1.81(1.14–2.87) and level of education (p = 0.04) were significantly associated with hypertension. age ≥ 45years increased the likelihood of developing HT by 0.81 times. Behavioral factors associated with HT included awareness of the BP status (p = 0.010, OR = 0.53(CI: 0.32–0.87),use of fats/oil for cooking (p = 0.02, OR = 1.73 (CI: 1.09–2.75)), reduced salt intake (p = 0.001, OR = 0.075(CI:0.01–0.55)), and overweight and obesity (BMI) level ( p = 0.010, OR = 1.77 (CI 1.12–2.80)). BMI ≥ 25kg/m2 increased the likelihood of developing HT by 0.77 times. The prevalence of HT and pre-HT in this rapidly transitioning rural–urban population was high. The risk of CVDs is about 16 folds higher among pre-HT compared to no HT and doubles for every 10-mmHg increase in BP. Hence, the considerable risk and burden of HT and related CVDs that require a dire need to adopt strategies to prevent and control hypertension based on the identified associated risk factors in Ndorwa HS
