Design of a Mechanised Sorghum Sieving Machine Used in Agriculture Production.
This study was formulated to design and simulate a mechanized sieving machine for sorghum, incorporating a detailed study of existing designs and utilizing SolidWorks software for conceptualization. The methods involved desk review by comparing the existing specifications with the mode of operations, and interviews through direct interviews with local farmers about the capacity of their product. Observations going to the field and observing the farmer's produce per day, questioners asking questions about income and what can be the affordable price for the machine
The objectives involved determining the design specification of the sieving machine, selecting and sizing the sieving machine to meet the design specifications, developing the layout of the machine, evaluate the performance of the machine through simulation.
Practicing a Christian Environmental Ethic through Stewardship.
This article defines the human’s moral and ethical obligations toward environment and development but based on Genesis 2:15 where ‘the LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden” to work it and take care of it. This implied that he was to think, plan, cultivate and improve on the same garden he had been placed other than living a contemplative life. The article portrays that God’s people are stewards but he retains ownership of all His creation through a careful study of God's Word as illuminated by a number of historical and recent authors. Then the article proposes the Christian’s practical implications as caretakers or managers of nature that will lead to the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The bible will be at the centre but other relevant sources that are extra- biblical will also be consulted as well
Role of Social Economic Factors in Promoting Alcoholism in Southern Division Kabale District.
This research report focused on the role of socio-economic factors in promoting alcoholism in the Southern Division of Kabale District. The study utilized qualitative research methods to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of these factors on the community. The research was guided by three main objectives: identifying the causes of alcoholism in the Southern Division, determining the socio-economic factors contributing to alcoholism, and exploring the effects of alcoholism in the area. A sample of 40 participants, including heads and members of the Mothers Union and survivors of domestic violence, was selected through random sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, and the responses were analyzed using thematic analysis to uncover common themes and patterns. Ethical considerations, such as informed consent, confidentiality, and protecting participants' rights, were carefully adhered to. Although the qualitative approach may limit the generalizability of the findings, it provides a rich, detailed understanding of the complex social issues at hand. The research found that 24% of respondents cited psychological factors as the main reason for alcoholism, while only 10% pointed to marketing and media influence. The study concluded that alcohol consumption in the Southern Division is prevalent, with some individuals starting as early as 8 years old. The availability and affordability of local brews contribute to early alcohol use, especially among young people. Based on these findings, the study recommends that parents and guardians avoid consuming alcohol in the presence of their children and consistently provide guidance and counseling

The study aimed to examine the profitability of cabbage farming in Kabale District, Uganda. It was guided by three specific objectives: (1) to assess the production costs associated with cabbage farming, (2) to evaluate revenue generation and the potential economic returns, and (3) to conduct a return on investment analysis to determine the overall financial viability of cabbage farming in the region. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative data collected from experimental plots at the university farm site. The data collected covered aspects such as production costs, yields, market prices, and financial metrics that were analyzed using tools like Gross Profit Margin (GPM), and Return on Investment (ROI).
The findings of the study revealed several critical insights. The total production cost per hectare of cabbage farming was 4,300,000 UGX, with pesticides and seedlings being the most significant expenses. Other costs included fertilizers, irrigation, transportation, labor, and land preparation. Market prices for cabbage fluctuated between 500 and 1,000 UGX per head, with an average annual price of 700 UGX per head. The return on investment analysis showed that Gloria F1 is a more profitable variety to grow in Kabale with a return on investment of 115.8% compared to Copenhagen's 56.3%. The study made several recommendations to enhance the profitability and sustainability of cabbage farming in Kabale District. These recommendations include the need for government support in providing subsidies for inputs, improving access to credit facilities for farmers, investing in irrigation infrastructure, and offering training programs on best farming practices. Additionally, establishing stable market linkages and price stabilization mechanisms could help farmers secure better returns on their produce
Determination and Comparison of the Concentration of Cyanide Ions in Fresh and Dried Bitter Cassava.
This study investigated the impact of drying methods on cyanide concentrations in bitter cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz), specifically focusing on sun-drying and oven-drying techniques. The primary objectives were to determine cyanide levels in fresh, sun-dried, and oven-dried cassava and to assess the effectiveness of these drying methods in reducing cyanide content. Fresh cassava roots were collected from farms in Kanungu District, Uganda, and processed into three categories: fresh, sun-dried, and oven-dried, with standardized procedures applied to each drying method. Cyanide concentrations were measured using a titration method with silver nitrate. The results showed that fresh cassava had a mean cyanide concentration of 5432.16 mg/kg, which decreased to 2976.29 mg/kg for sun-dried and 2112.42 mg/kg for oven-dried samples. The findings indicated that oven-drying was more effective in reducing cyanide levels compared to sun-drying. Based on these results, the study concluded that oven-drying provided a more reliable method for minimizing cyanide content in bitter cassava, thereby enhancing food safety. It recommended adopting oven-drying for improved consistency in cyanide reduction and suggested further research into optimizing drying methods for different cassava varieties and assessing additional nutritional impacts
Variation in Benthic Macroinvertebrates Along aLongitudinal Gradient of a Disturbed Nyakambu Stream Kabale District Southwestern Uganda.
Anthropogenic disturbances in streams are occasioned by the necessity for social amenities by man and vary from region to region.
In the tropics the demands for domestic water are common (Mathooko et al. 2009), which become detrimental to the associated water resources when they exceed the tolerance range of the macroinvertebrate community and also affect individual taxa composition, thus impacting stream ecosystem functioning (Meyer 1997; Wagenhoff et al. 2011). The study assessed the impact of human activities on water quality and macroinvertebrate assemblages. It also assessed the response of macroinvertebrate-based indices of water quality to pollution levels. Macroinvertebrate community and physico-chemical variables data were collected from 6 sites. Two sites downstream were compared with 2 sites in the middle stream and two sites upstream. Of the downstream sites, 13 were situated at low altitudes. An increase in temperature, increase in conductivity, and total dissolved solids was observed in downstream sites. Macroinvertebrate community structure and South African Scoring System (SASS) scores closely followed the induced changes in water quality due to human activities. However, water quality variables, macroinvertebrate community structure, and SASS scores reverted back as some tolerant families and high turbidity and conductivity were recorded from the midstream sites. Tolerant families were recorded both in the down and midstream and sensitive species were collected in the upstream such as plecopterans and trichopterans following the EPT concept.
Low temperatures and high pH were recorded in the upstream due to the abundance of undisturbed vegetation and less impact of human activities on the stream. Low pH was recorded in the downstream sites due to urbanization, which leads to increased pollution levels through poor disposal of sewage and other wastes
Depiction of Religion and Colonialism in the Novel Houseboy By Ferdinand Oyono.
The study examined the depiction of religion and colonialism in Ferdinand Oyono's novel "Houseboy" with two primary objectives: to investigate the role of religion in the novel and to analyze the impact of colonialism on African culture. A qualitative research design was utilized, allowing for detailed information collection, analysis, and interpretation based on the novel's text to describe specific issues. Document analysis, a form of qualitative research, involves interpreting documents to provide them with voice and meaning around the study's topics.
The findings revealed that religion is a central theme in "Houseboy," significantly influencing both colonial administrators and indigenous people. The Catholic Church emerges as a prominent institution within the colonial setting, closely linked with the colonial system. French colonial officers are portrayed as hypocritical, using religion to justify their exploitation of the African population. The protagonist, Toundi, becomes intrigued by Christianity and the Catholic Church, leading to a complex and conflicted relationship with the religion as he delves deeper into its teachings.
The study concluded that Oyono's "Houseboy" offers a nuanced portrayal of the intersections between religion and colonialism in the African colonial experience. Through Toundi's perspective, the novel explores the complexities of power dynamics, cultural assimilation, and resistance within the colonial context. The study recommends using religion to teach moral values to society, helping to preserve these values, and cautions against using religion to justify punitive actions and emotional torture within families
