"Grief of X ? Grief of Y" : a study on the bereavement of fathers and mothers in relation to child’s death.

    No full text
This study dealt with the differences in grief between 27 bereaved couples recruited from the Inang Naulila sa Anak (INA) Foundation, an organization for bereaved parents, who lost the same child to death. The mean age of the bereaved fathers was 52 years while mothers were 49 years of age on average. The deceased children ranged from pre-birth to adulthood. The causes of death were variable. A combination of survey and in-depth interviews was used in the study. Paired t-test was used to analyze the significant differences between the two groups with regard to the study variables. Overall, there was no significant difference in the bereavement scores of fathers and mothers in relation to their child’s death. Specific scale items. however, indicated that bereaved mothers’ grief responses were significantly higher with regard to level of gratitude, liability, vulnerability to pain, loss of appetite, openness in joining support groups and organizations, and close relationship with God. These indicate that women are more expressive and tend to talk about their feelings more with others. Meanwhile, bereaved fathers were found to be significantly higher in their tendencies to isolate themselves, become socially sensitive, keeping a healthy body despite the death of their children and higher inclination to vices which only shows that men cope with such emotions in a more solitary and physical way. Recommendations for bereaved fathers to free themselves of stereotypes and societal expectations about men and grief, for bereaved couples to understand and support each other better and for support groups to improve their programs were presented. Suggestions for future researches were provided as well

A case study on how GMA news and public affairs utilizes the Twitter accounts of their reporters,

    No full text
After the study, the researcher came to a realization that twitter is indeed important in socialization with people and cognition of information. Twitter, if not perfectly, best caters the needs of a news reporter in doing their jobs. The news organizations that are not yet on the same track should start moving in using twitter. Not only news organizations, but companies who have a market to reach should use twitter. The social and professional needs of the reporters are reinforced by twitter. However, it also came to the mind of the researcher that twitter has yet to get a wider scope. It caters to a lot now, but it can get more than a lot in the future. But it does not remove its potentials as an effective mass media tool. It does not only help them do their jobs, but it helps them increase the ratings of their programs. Thus, twitter is an effective tool to promote programs. The reporters have a lot to know more about the game of twitter, but as of now, they are doing a great job in utilizing it to their advantage. The followers, if tweets really help increase the ratings, are either into engagement or the brand of the reporter or purposely, for news only. Twitter then, contributes to the personalization of reporting and inviting viewers for the news programs

Proper care and use of contact lenses and lens solution should be observed, as contact lenses are prone to microbial contamination. This study aims to assess the microbial load of used contact lens solutions of UP Manila students and to determine their lens wearing history and perceived level of compliance to lens care procedures. This study also aims to test for an association between the microbial load of the used contact lens solutions, and the perceived level of compliance to each of the lens care procedures. Microbial load was determined through viable cell count. Initially, the method for inoculation was the spread plate, but was later modified using the procedure by Miles and Misra. Results showed that microbial load from used contact lenses ranged from no growth to greater than 1x10⁶ CFU/ml. Based on the microscopic observation of Gram-stained bacterial smears, contaminated used lens solutions had multiple microbial identities (15/33 PCA plates), with Gram (+) bacilli (endospore-forming) and cocci as the most common identity of the microbial load. Yeast and molds were also observed on SDA plates. Using Chi-square test, it was determined that the perceived compliance scores for most lens care procedures in the SAQ were non-homogeneous. Results suggest that a number of students perceived that they are compliant with the proper procedures of lens care. A significant association is present between the microbial growth on the lens solution and the perceived compliance of participants on washing of their hands before handling contact lenses (p-value = 0.007), and cleaning/rubbing of contact lenses immediately after it has been removed from the eyes (p-value = 0.039). The results suggest that UP Manila students to always wash their hands prior to their handling and use of contact lenses, and to clean contact lenses immediately after removal

Aptly named “Sin City,” the strip along Clark Air base called Fields Avenue is the place to be  if  you’re  looking  for  “entertainment.” Aside  from  the  endless  flow  of  alcohol,  women  were considered  a  commodity  in  these  parts  of  town,  selling  of  their  bodies  in  exchange  for  money.  Foreigners  can’t  resist having a taste of what the city has to offer: an experience with an angel. But reality is cruel and the “angels” of angles city are far from heaven.    A  never  ending  supply  of  women  suffering  from  impoverished  circumstances  and the continuous patronage of both local and foreign clientele are factors that fuel the sex industry in Angeles City. The absence of choice, a source of easy money and the illusion of a greener pasture lure hundreds of women every year into flesh trade but are trapped by the ever-piling debt.     Amidst this blatant abuse of women’s rights, the government, the very institution whose purpose  is  to  serve  its  people,  turns  a  blind  eye  to  this  phenomenon,  and  in  fact fact is  the  main  supporter  of  the  industry through regulation and tourism policies that promote prostitution.

Public’s perceived effectiveness to the strategies of the Philippine National Police against hostage taking.

    No full text
The Philippine National Police, the country’s law enforcement agency, is in-charge of solving different crime related situations such as the hostage taking crisis. Public perception to PNP’s strategies against such situation will affect the agency’s credibility and reputation. These two elements are important for these will have impact to the public’s trust and cooperation with PNP which is pertinent for the agency’s daily operations. Since there are different ways on how the public witness a hostage taking situation, perceptions of people could differ. This descriptive research study determines the perception of the public to the strategies of PNP against hostage taking. It is achieved by identifying some strategies against hostage taking in terms of planning, management, communication and post-assault plan and knowing if PNP does these strategies during actual hostage taking based on public perception. Measurement of the perception of people who actually witnessed the hostage taking and those who watched i t through television will be compared. A separate measurement will also be done to determine public’s perception to the over-all strategies of PNP against hostage taking. The objectives of the study will be accomplished through content analysis to different sources of hostage taking strategies and survey questionnaires to the public. The research revealed that the hostage taking strategies covered by the study are all done by PNP during actual hostage taking. Public perceptions to these strategies were regarded by the respondents to be positive. That is, the public perceives these strategies to be effective. When the strategies were grouped into four divisions according to the stages that PNP undergoes during the actual hostage taking, the planning stage were perceived by the respondents to be highly positive. PNP was highly effective in activating a group that is in-charge of handling the hostage taking situation along with its sub-groups assigned to perform a specific task. This is followed by the post-assault plan stage which was perceived by the respondents as positive. PNP has effectively executed the steps to be done after the hostage taking situation. The management and the negotiation stage have obtained the lowest score compared to the four stages. But still, people perceived these two stages to be positive. These stages are crucial for the success of the outcome of the hostage situation. PNP has also effectively carried out these strategies well that is why the hostage taking situation’s result was a success. The study proved the significance of media’s role during hostage crisis. People who have witnessed the actual hostage taking gave higher scores compared to people who have seen it through television. There is a significant difference of perception to the PNP’s strategies between the two groups. PNP should also consider the media during a hostage taking crisis because it could affect how the people would perceive the effectiveness of the agency’s strategies. Lastly, majority of the respondents’ score to the over-all strategies of PNP against hostage taking range from neutral, positive and highly positive. Results show that the public seems to have a good perception to the strategies of PNP against hostage taking

Soil salinity is one of the most important environmental factors that causes osmotic stress and limits plant growth and productivity of Oryza sativa, commonly known as rice. To improve yield in saline soil, one possible solution is to plant salt tolerant rice varieties in these areas. As a contribution along this line, the present study screened for salt tolerance of seven new varieties of rice developed by the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PRRI) and International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). NSIC 2010 Rc226 (TUBIGAN 20), NSIC Rc222 (TUBIGAN 18), NSIC Rc218 SR (MABANGO 3), NSIC Rc216 (TUBIGAN 17), NSIC Rc212 (TUBIGAN 15), NSIC Rc160 (TUBIGAN 14), and NSIC Rc156 (TUBIGAN 12) were grown on a hydroponic system together with three controlled varieties, Pokkali (salt tolerant), IR 74 (moderately tolerant) and IR 29 (sensitive). The nutrient solution was salinized to 12 deciSiemens for 16 days while maintaining the pH level to 5.0. The salt stress tolerance level was evaluated through visual scoring and comparisons of shoot length, root length and dry weight. Results showed that Rc222, Rc216, Rc160 and Rc156 were salt sensitive like IR 29, while Rc218 and Rc226 were found to be moderately tolerant. Rc212 was seen to have a potential salt tolerant characteristic as its results were between those of Pokkali and IR 74. Further studies should be made on Rc212 in order to confirm this promising result

With the creation of numerous digital materials every day, there lies an inherent problem on where and how to store them in the context of long-term archiving. This institutional problem for the University of the Philippines Manila is further aggravated with the utilization of multiple repositories – creating information islands of digital institutional assets in the process. This greatly hinders data gathering and dissemination of digital materials within the institution. As a solution to the said problem, an online centralized repository system for the University of the Philippines Manila is proposed. The repository system allows users to be able to view, store, and share digital materials while providing functionalities such as material commenting and annotation. The development of the University of the Philippines Manila Institutional Repository made it possible for users to be able to easily search and contribute digital materials with the use of the Internet. On the administrative side, System Administrators are fully capable of moderating content and can even assign moderators to each community to help in the moderation process

Effects of different photoperiods on weight, blood glucose and cholesterol of mice (Mus musculus).

    No full text
Light is a zeitgeber known to modulate the circadian rhythm of both animals and plants. In this study, the researchers aim to test whether different photoperiods have any effect on the weight, blood glucose and cholesterol of mice. Forty-eight male mice were divided into three groups and exposed to a 12:12 Light-dark (LD) cycle, 4:20 LD cycle and 20:4 LD cycle. Blood was drawn from each mouse for subsequent assay and weight was measured from six mice per group every two weeks for nine weeks. Results show that the length of light exposure did not significantly alter the weight, blood glucose and cholesterol level of the mice. These findings may suggest that there are factors other than the length of light exposure that may disrupt the circadian rhythm of some physiological parameters

Visualization of Multivariate Health Data using Self-Organizing Maps

    No full text
Data that are multivariate in nature is a type of data that may contain subtle patterns. However, it is considered to be an obstacle in research most of the time since classical statistics may nd it encumbering to analyze. However, computational statistics, a collab- oration between computer science and statistics, o ers a suite of algorithms that may be used to surpass obstacles such as this. The Self-Organizing Map and Data Visualization are examples of these. The Self-Organizing Map is an arti cial neural network that employs a process to reduce multidimensional data into a low-dimensional representation while Data Visualization is a process that aims to give the human brain a visual representation of knowledge about certain data. SOM Visualize is a software that makes use of both pro- cesses. The tool enables users to input data and visualize several patterns such as clusters, associations, as well as a geographical representation that exist in the data. It may give several hypotheses that may be con rmed through other statistical tests and SOM Visualize has therefore enabled the possibility of analysis of multivariate data

Managing Philippine labor migration: government and NGO interventions for the protection of Filipino migrant workers.

    No full text
At present, there is no denying that labor migration has become an enduring feature of the Philippine economy. The government, albeit in denial of its labor export policy, explicitly acclaims migration as an engine of economic growth through remittances. However, while the economic consequences of labor outflow has come to be viewed as positive, Philippine labor migration has become a far complex phenomenon, one that entails a variety of issues and concerns that continue to pose unprecedented challenges for the government. Of primary concern in managing this phenomenon is that of ensuring the welfare of migrant workers on-site in their destination countries. This study looks at the on-site situation of Filipino migrant welfare and protection, an aspect of migration often overlooked in the larger studies of Philippine labor outflow. Drawing from interviews with key government officials and the accounts of NGOs engaged in migrant affairs in the Middle East and Hong Kong, the study presents an evaluation of state mechanisms and NGO services for migrant protection. Results of the study highlight, first, the gaps in the implementation of service delivery provisions as indicated in the legal framework and, second, the increasing importance of NGO interventions in these aspects. The study also looks at the emerging discourse which situates the role of the state in managing labor migration. Focusing on the increasingly aggressive role of the government in the promotion of overseas employment and the conflict that this ensues with the state’s capability to genuinely pursue migrant welfare and protection, the study finds that this deployment-protection conundrum, particularly in this era of global financial and economic difficulties, presents a serious policy issue that has both critical social and economic implications and can greatly undermine protection of Filipino migrant workers
