Behavioral intention towards pakikisama in the workplace.
The present study sought to assess the degree of behavioral intention towards pakikisama in the context of the Valenzuela Municipal Office. The study also aimed to find the relationship of pakikisama behavioral intention to its predictor variables. Furthermore, it also considered the possible moderating influence of (1) age and (2) length of stay in the job in the relationship between pakikisama and behavioural intention. The Theory of Planned Behavior and its major constructs were also used and contextualized for the study.
Survey questionnaire were administered and collected from a total of 100 employees. Purposive non probability sampling was employed to meet sampling criteria: (1) Employees should not hold a supervisory position, and; (2) The employee should have been working in his/her present job for at least six months. Descriptive Statistics and correlation among the major variables were computed and presented. Canonical Correlation was used to find relationships between and among variables. The study found that the degree of pakikisama behavioral intention among the employees of Valenzuela Municipal Office is generally high.
The study also supported the Theory of Planned Behavior’s premise that attitude, social norm and perceived behavioral control have significant relationship to behavioral intention applied in a given behaviour (i.e pakikisama). Attitude proved to be the top predictor while social norm proved to be the least influential. Perceived behavioural control ranked next to attitude.
Demographics factors manifested an essential moderating influence between pakikisama and behavioral intention. It showed that behavioural intention towards pakikisama gradually decreases as employee ages. Parallel to these findings, employees showed a gradual decrease in the intention to engage in pakikisama related behavior as they increase the length of stay in the job.
Younger employees who have been staying in the company for shorter years (i.e liaison personnel, interns, and utility personnel) manifested a high degree of intention towards pakikisama in the workplace through various activities that are outside the scope of employee job description.
Older employees who have been staying in the job for longer years (i.e. department officers, and supervisor’s assistant and secretaries) manifested a moderate degree of intention towards pakikisama in the workplace through behaviors that could help new employees cope with the job
Morphometric study on the endometrium of ethanol-treated mice (Mus musculus) supplemented with folic acid.
Ethanol is one of the most potent and common teratogens known. It can also affect fecundity and reproductive health. This study aimed to determine the correlation between endometrial morphology and ethanol consumption, leading to non-implantation. Folic acid was used as a mitigating factor that might offset the detrimental effects of ethanol on the uterus. 48 five-week old female ICR mice were divided into the control, ethanol, low dosage folic acid, and high dosage folic acid groups. After two weeks of treatment, during proestrous, the female mice were sacrificed and the uteri harvested for histological serial sectioning. The method of Salehnia et al. (2006) was used to assess the following: surface epithelial thickness, endometrial thickness, glandular epithelial thickness, and gland diameter. Statistical tests revealed a significant decrease in the gland diameter of the endometrium of mice which were fed folic acid supplements. Folic acid is known to increase progesterone levels, and high progesterone levels result in smaller gland diameters as discussed by Wang et al. (2007). The results showed that the treatments with folic acid, irrespective of the dosage, were able to prevent a decrease in progesterone levels brought about by the consumption of ethanol. This treatment may counter the detrimental effect of ethanol on endometrial morphology and female reproductive health
Unmasking the ‘Good Samaritan’: perceived Organizational Support and Impression Management as antecedents of organizational citizenship behavior.
In the face of decreasing resources, having employees willing to perform organizational citizenship behaviors (OCB)--which are not required but beneficial-can be advantageous for organizations. Thus, to encourage performance of OCB among employees, it is imperative to identify what drives employees to perform these behaviors. Using Organizational Support Theory and Impression Management theory as framework, this study therefore sought to measure performance of select OCBs (helping behavior, initiative, and volunteerism) and its relationship with (a) perceived organizational support (POS), (b) support from co-workers and (c) impression management. Moreover, the researcher determined whether employees’ attribution of OCB as in-role (part of their job) or extra-role (beyond job requirement) influences their performance of it. Respondents (n=150) for the 37-item survey used in this quantitative study were randomly selected office staff workers in Parañaque City Hall. Proportional sampling of casual and regular employees was also ensured. Results indicate that employees generally tend to perform OCB especially those they identified as part of their jobs. Although POS, co-worker support and impression management were all found to be significantly related to OCB, coworker support appears to be the strongest driver of OCB among surveyed respondents. The differing results for casual and regular employees are also discussed

If these walls could talk! by Carlos Celdran: a study on Cultural Heritage Management.
Cultural Heritage Management (CHM) seeks to identify, interpret, preserve and conserve cultural heritage properties for the future generation. It benefits not only the heritage property but as well as the cultural heritage manager, the host community and the host government. The concepts of CHM are then summarized and incorporated in a framework done within the study. This research aims to present the manifestations of Cultural Heritage Management in the Intramuros tour of Carlos Celdran entitled If These Walls Could Talk! through the help of the framework. It presents how Carlos Celdran identifies the heritage sites in his tour, how he interprets them and how he conserves and preserves them. The concepts were also aligned and related to other CHM charters of neighboring countries to affirm the indicators. A series of communication with the informant through documentary analysis, interview, and a direct observation and participation in the tour, aided in finding out that the concepts within Cultural Heritage Management is manifested in Carlos Celdran's tour. He is exhibiting Cultural Heritage Management without being consumed in the idea of being a heritage tour guide. As an outcome of the study, it is also recommended that Cultural Heritage Management could be exercised by any person in authority who would deeply appreciate and maintain the value of a heritage property
Effects of Dietary Supplementation of Zingiber officinale on Sperm Count and Sperm Morphology of Cigarette Smoke-exposed Mus musculus.
This study aimed to investigate the effect of dietary Zingiber officinale (ginger) extract on the sperm count and sperm morphology of cigarette smoke-exposed Mus musculus and to compare the efficacy of ginger extract to vitamin C as antioxidant supplement. Four groups of ten mice each were treated as follows: (1) an unsupplemented and unexposed control group (NN); (2) a group which was smoke-exposed without any dietary supplementation (EN); (3) another group that was smoke-exposed and provided with vitamin C supplement (EV), and; (4) one group which was smoke exposed and given ginger extract in the diet (EG). After four weeks of the different dietary regimes and 10 days of smoke exposure, during which the respective diets were continued, sperm samples were obtained from each mouse. Following observations of the samples using light microscopy and a standard hemocytometer kit, findings showed that the mice of the group EG exhibited highest sperm count, 50 ± 17 thousand cells per mm³ compared to other groups. Observed sperm abnormalities include headless, tailless, deformed head, and shorttailed. The mice of the group EN exhibited the highest number of abnormal sperm while the NN mice had the least observed number of abnormalities. The ginger extract in the diet apparently has anti-oxidative properties that likely helped to prevent low sperm count and occurrence of abnormal sperm among mice exposed to cigarette smoke
Assessing the antimicrobial activity of Capsicum frutescens Linn. (Siling labuyo) crude fruit extract.
Capsicum frutescens is the spiciest pepper cultivated in the Philippines. Capsaicin, comprising 90% of the phytochemicals found in its ripe fruits, is responsible for the antimicrobial activities of this species. This study aimed to determine the presence of the antimicrobial activity of the crude fruit extract of Capsicum frutescens on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Aspergillus fumigatus, and Alternaria alternata when introduced in varying concentrations and to compare the antimicrobial activity of C. frutescens with commercially available disinfectant (Zonrox). Crude ethanolic extracts were prepared, in different formulations (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%), from ripe fruits of C. frutescens. The formulations of the crude extract were tested against the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (UPCC 1143) and Escherichia coli (UPCC 1195) and fungi Aspergillus fumigata (ATCC 1028) and Alternaria alternata (ATCC 6663) using the disk diffusion method. Zonrox and deionized water served as the positive and negative controls, respectively. The extract inhibited the growth of S. aureus at 50% (0.84mm ± 0.31mm), 75% (1.1mm ± 0.17mm), and 100% (3.83mm ± 0.35mm) formulations. Also, it inhibited the growth of A. fumigatus at the 100% (0.63mm ± 0.20mm) formulation. A significant difference in the effectiveness of the different concentrations of Capsicum frutescens crude fruit extract against Staphylococcus aureus and Aspergillus fumigatus was observed. These results indicate that the effectiveness of the crude fruit extract against S. aureus and A. fumigatus is directly proportional to its concentration
Emerging resistant strains: a atudy of the antibiotic resistance of enterococcus species isolated in Pasig River, Manila, Philippines (2012)
The Pasig River is one of the major waterways in the country, connecting Laguna de Bay and Manila Bay. It traverses most of Metro Manila and has been used as a commercial route by boats and ferries since the Spanish Era. It now serves as sites for different industrial and residential areas despite the presence of wastes and other microorganisms. The objective of this study is to isolate and detect the antibiotic resistance of Enterococcus species present in Pasig River. Water samples from Pasig River were collected from 10 sites. These were subjected to Direct Plate Counting to determine the present microbial load of Pasig River and different biochemical and agar tests to confirm the presence of Enterococcus in the collected water samples. Results of the plate counting showed that Carlos P. Garcia had the lowest microbial load with only 8.63 x 10² CFU/ mL while Quezon Bridge, A. Luna St., P. Tuazon and Nagpayong Ferry Station produced plates that exceeded the significant count of 300 and thus had an average of =3.00 x 10³ CFU/ mL.Upon confirmation of Enterococcus species, 25 isolates were subjected to the Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (AST) via the Kirby-Bauer Disk Diffusion Method. All isolates were identified to be resistant to Penicillin and Ampicillin while showing complete susceptibility to High Level Streptomycin. Nine (9) isolates showed intermediate susceptibility to Vancomycin while fifteen (15) isolates showed complete resistance to the antibiotic
Effect of Lactobacillus plantarum BS25 and fermented mango-soymilk drink on cholesterol levels in vitro.
The link between cholesterol consumption and the risks of developing cardiovascular diseases has been well-documented, a trend which has driven the development of affordable functional foods in recent years. This study aims to determine if mangosoymilk drink fermented with Lactobacillus plantarum BS25 has the ability to reduce cholesterol levels in vitro. Mango-soymilk drink was prepared and a spectrophotometric method of the cholesterol assimilation assay was performed. Results showed that L. plantarum BS25 in mango-soymilk can assimilate cholesterol in vitro (96.11 µg/mL). Moreover, this cholesterol-assimilating ability was observed to be greatly significant (p<0.05) compared to the unfermented drink (3.89 µg/mL) and the probiotic isolates alone (32.36 µg/mL). This could be due to the ability of BS25 to metabolize complex sugars found in soymilk which is linked to flatulence when consumed unfermented based on several studies. This may also indicate that mango-soymilk can be a good growth medium for BS25. The ability of BS25 to assimilate cholesterol is due to bile salt hydrolase mechanism, an enzyme activity that has been well-documented in many L. plantarum strains. BS25’s ability to ferment the sugars in the soymilk also improves the overall quality of the drink. These results indicate that BS25 can be an effective inoculum in developing probiotic drinks using soymilk and mango juice, and at the same time provide potential health benefits including cholesterol reduction to consumers. Further tests using animal models may be conducted to strengthen the results of this study

History is a part of our culture. In fact, it plays a very big role in the formation of our identity as Filipinos. Attempting to study culture by revisiting history would give people the opportunity to gain a connection with their past, a connection that if strengthened, could give an individual his/her identity that in turn connects the person to Filipinos who lived in the preceding times, as well as those fellowmen with a great influence in history. In turn, this will also enable a person to understand and use the knowledge obtained in the present time.
Pop culture lives in everything that people do at this modern age, and no group could be more influenced than the youth. It is in this light that the researcher chose this study to be enlightened on how the people are affected and how it is related to the Philippine society as a whole.
Qualitative methods were used to prove to the people how strong the American influence is, and what is actually happening in reality. With the support of quantitative methods such as surveys and in-depth interviews, this study aims to address the youth and keep them aware so that together they can help each other in creating an efficient society that Filipinos wanted in the first place
