THE NON-MATHEMATICAL ASPECTS OF MATHEMATICAL 
PROBLEM SOLVING IN URBAN CLASSROOMS

Introduction:  “Being hard like a “gangsta” is viewed by several youths…as inextricably linked to being 
Black or Latino, male, low-income, and from a tough urban neighborhood." (Dance, 2002 pps. 4-5). 
Closely related, Anderson (2000) notes that certain types of behaviors, or “codes” often govern the 
actions of the youngsters-both in and out of school.  “At the heart of the code is the issue of respect – 
loosely defined as … being granted one’s ‘props’ (or proper due) or the deference one deserves,” (see 
Anderson, 2000).  These “codes” include mannerisms, gestures, and facial expressions indicative of street 
cultures (Dance, 2002). The main question that address is: when and how do students’ enact, through 
gesture or argument, these types of street “codes” in the context of solving mathematical problems. This 
research is part of a larger study that seeks to identify how certain aspects of the urban environment 
influence the mathematical problem solving behavior of children, (see Epstein, et.al. in press).  
Methods:  The study takes place over a one-month period, which involved one visit a week (60 minute 
session) in a diverse, low performing, eighth grade inner-city classroom.  The visits are part of a 
professional development project in which the classroom teacher & district teacher leader participated in 
professional development sessions with researchers, both at the University and within the context of their 
own classrooms. At least two video cameras captured different views of the teacher interventions, 
students’ group work, students’ presentations, etc. All student work was collected and descriptive field 
notes were compiled by at least two researchers. After each lesson, the participants would “debrief” to 
discuss key ideas relating to affective issues, mathematical ideas, and other relevant issues.  
Preliminary Results: Below, for brevity sake, we report on one episode in which the students were given 
a task involving maximizing area, given a fixed perimeter.  They were asked to work in groups, and then 
share ideas at the overhead projector. Several students argued about the meaning of area and perimeter. 
The mathematical discussions that arose from these varied perspectives were at times heated, and 
appeared to be confrontational in nature. The following is one such example:  
[J]:  Calm down! [T]: It didn’t say the area! [J]:  I know …. You just said …. Remember you just said …. 
I know …. (Clapping hands) [T]: But you just said …. You just said it’s not the area (gestures with hands 
and looks at E). [E]: We’re looking for the area (hits hands together). [Teacher]: Okay class! Let’s be 
civilized. [E]:    I say 64 is not the area …. [N]:    We is (sic) civilized. We is (sic) having a debate with 
numbers. [E]:    64 is not the area!! 
Throughout the exchange, the students appeared to use hand gestures and facial expressions that 
emphasized their commitment to an idea.  The teacher’s comments indicate that she felt that they were 
acting “uncivilized”. These behaviors, while benign in nature in the context of this lesson, could easily be 
misconstrued by an outside observer, or a teacher, unfamiliar with as Anderson describes, ‘the code of the 
street”.  We speculate that by better understanding such behaviors, we may gain deeper insight into how 
to create and maintain a productive classroom culture.

nounced a new teaching and learn-
ing format for our community: 
FMGOnDemand.  A collaborative 
effort of IRT and the Library, and 
part of a state-wide VALE initiative 
led by Jane Hutchison (IRT), 
FMGOnDemand provides streaming 
video access to a number of educa-
tional films owned by the Cheng 
Library.   
 Useful for presenting videos in 
classrooms and online classes, these 
films can be viewed anywhere stu-
dents have access to the Internet, 
Windows Media Player, and a pair 
of headphones.  There’s no need to 
make a trip to Media Services to 
borrow and return videos! 
 To date, the Cheng Library has 
purchased 130 titles from Films Me-
dia Group (FMG), covering a varie-
ty of subject areas.  Formerly known 
as Films for the Humanities & Sci-
ences, FMG provides limited pre-
views for over 4,000 additional ti-
tles, free of charge, through their

George Tice Presents Tour of His Paterson II Photographs 
scenes of the city streets of Paterson 
including two triptychs of downtown 
streets and a diptych of the Broad-
way Bus Terminal. 
 These new photographs are col-
lected in Mr. Tice’s most recent 
book, Paterson II, published in 2006.  
The photographs were previously 
exhibited at the Newark Museum 
during the fall of 2006.  The exhibit 
at the University Galleries included 
twelve additional photographs which 
were not displayed in Newark. 
 Mr. Tice has an established rela-
tionship with William Paterson Uni-
versity.  In May 2003, he received an 
honorary doctor of humane letters 
degree from the University, and in 
2004, Mr. Tice returned to present a 
lecture and slideshow of his photo-
graphic work spanning more than 50 
years.  
 At that time, his daughter, Loretta 
Germaine Tice, made a gift to the 
Cheng Library of an original photo-
graph, Joe’s Barber Shop, Paterson, 
1970, plus several books and a post-
er.  The photograph and poster are on 
display on the main level of the Li-
brary. 
tions particular to each photograph – 
of how the photo was taken, lighting 
conditions, people in or around the 
scene, and effects of the sun and 
shadows.  He spoke of one of his 
favorite photographs, Sammy’s Bar, 
Main Street, and of Bonita standing 
in the doorway of the bar and his 
conversation with her as he set up his 
equipment. 
 Mr. Tice noted that the three 
themes of man, nature, and the man-
made are interwoven throughout his 
books of Paterson.  He commented 
on the subtleties of composition of 
the photographs and other curious 
incidents surrounding the often day-
long process of photographing the 
scenes.   
 He spoke of waiting for the sun-
light to move across the side of a 
building; of clearing debris from a 
scene near the Great Falls; of waiting 
for people to move in or out of a 
photograph; and of climbing to the 
top of parking garages and rooftops 
to get a better view of the City. 
 Included in this series of photo-
graphs are images of Garrett Moun-
tain, the Passaic Falls, and many

co-sponsored a guided tour by 
George Tice of his second series of 
photographs of the City of Paterson 
and its environs.  The event took 
place at the University Galleries in 
Ben Shahn Hall on February 11, 
2007.  The University Galleries also 
co-sponsored the event.   
 More than 100 admirers of Mr. 
Tice’s work attended the event to 
view the new photographs and to 
hear the commentary of this re-
nowned photographer.   
 Beginning in 2000, Tice returned 
to the Paterson area to revisit the site 
of his earlier work, and to begin his 
second book of Paterson photo-
graphs.  The majority of the photo-
graphs in this exhibit were images 
taken between 2000 and 2005.  A 
few of the photographs in the exhibit 
date from Tice’s first photographic 
essay of Paterson.  These images 
were collected in a book, Paterson, 
published in 1972 by Rutgers Uni-
versity Press and now out of print.

room of the exhibit commenting on 
the photographs and retelling situa-

 Honored With Awards 
 
 Two student assistants of the 
Cheng Library were selected to re-
ceive the “Outstanding Student As-
sistant Award” for 2007.  The stu-
dents are Matthew Catania, Lending 
Services, and Ashley Yancey, Peri-
odicals. 
 The awards were presented at 
the Library’s Annual Student Assis-
tants’ Recognition and Awards Re-
ception on April 24, 2007. 
 Matthew, a psychology major, 
has been working at the Library for 
two years.  Ashley, a senior, is ma-
joring in sociology. 
 Congratulations to Matthew and 
Ashley, and a big “thank you” to all 
of the Library’s student assistants.

THE FRIENDS OF THE CHENG LIBRARY 
  
 Standing near the crest of a gently rising hill on the edge of downtown, the Danforth Memorial Building of the 
Paterson Public Library seems like an enchanted place.  True, it faces Broadway, which now looks for all the 
world like a derelict, ill-considered street.  One needs equal measures of imagination and faith to comprehend an 
era when it was the noblest passage through the city.  The library at that time was just one part of a procession of 
remarkable buildings gracing a neighborhood that exuded an easy and inviting cultural amplitude.  The environs 
are now diminished, and the grounds appear indelibly littered.  This solitary building remains, destined to radiate a 
singular beauty.  Although the past in Paterson is always imperiled, the library continues to serve, as it has from 
the first, as the city’s great public place. 
 
 When the building was conceived in 1902, there was a recent but widespread consensus that a free public li-
brary was integral to a community’s civic health.  Over the years, however, some questioned this with a lingering, 
if furtive, intensity.  Recently their hectoring has gotten louder.  From the perspective of anyone who cares about 
libraries, these questions are neither idle nor rhetorical.  They are agonizingly existential, and they raise threaten-
ing doubts about the fate of libraries as cultural institutions.  But the presence of this stoic, magnificent space 
prompts more intriguing and more hopeful counter-questions: Why do such buildings exist in the first place, and 
why do they endure? 
 
 It is only a slight simplification to say that this library is the child of Mary Elizabeth Ryle (1833-1904).  The 
daughter of Charles Danforth (1797-1876), an inventor who had come to Paterson and had made a fortune, she 
became the wife of a man who had done much the same.  By 1888, she found herself in the possession of a large 
fortune.  She preferred to live away from the public eye.  But not from public need.  Such was her nature that her 
charity was customarily bestowed in silence.  Endowing a library is a different matter altogether, and erecting 
such a conspicuous building puts one’s name on many people’s lips.  At her death, David Magie, her minister and 
eulogist, noted, “her personal convictions of duty could not be shaken.  She said at one time, ‘I saw it was right 
and I did it.’” 
 
 Henry Bacon, the library’s architect, later designed the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.  His public 
buildings, by and large, are rendered in a classical revival style that exhibits a restraint approaching austerity.  
This gives the effect of Spartan strength and dignity.  The absence of lavish decorative motifs focuses the eye – 
and thus the mind – on the structure’s overarching task.  Here the details are understated, subtle, but no less tell-
ing.  Engraved on the fascia of the eastern, northern, and western façades are the names of seminal authors of the 
western canon.  They function much like carved reliefs, and they proceed chronologically, comprising a verbal 
rather than a visual frieze.  They bespeak a very high level of public discourse.  And they affirm that the civiliza-
tion of the book is an abiding presence. 
 
 It is tempting to see in the Danforth Memorial Building a reflection of elite ambitions.  The design surely em-
bodies prevailing cultural attributes, real and imagined, but it would be a mistake to regard it only in those terms.  
Names have been inscribed on its façade for a reason.  They point to something more.  It is no accident that you 
have to lift your head to see them.  They insist that it is here where anyone will find both a promise and a sum-
mons.  In the end, the promise is not to a fickle relevance, but to enduring truths.  The summons is not a plea to 
thumb through pages or to click on them.  Rather, it is a summons to become more fully who we are, a summons 
ultimately to become more fully human.  Of all the secular institutions devised in human history, only a public 
library freely offers this.  And that is why the Danforth Memorial Building is not, despite appearances, stranded 
amidst the rubble.  Being where it is, doing what it does, it stands precisely where it belongs.  Because it is here, 
poised in place to withstand and to overcome the assaults of a mind-numbing social implosion, that it can best 
offer all of us the greatest cultural hope.

 The 8th Annual VALE Users’ Con-
ference took place on January 5, 2007 
at the Busch Campus Center of Rut-
gers University.  More than 250 librar-
ians attended this conference, and 
among the presenters and panelists 
were several librarians from William 
Paterson University. 
 Anne Ciliberti and Richard 
Kearney participated in the panel dis-
cussion, “Sharing Information Literacy 
Materials: The Next Phase.”  This ses-
sion provided an outline of the possi-
bilities for statewide collaboration in 
the development and sharing of infor-
mation literacy materials.  
 Jane B. Hutchison, Mark Sandford 
and Tony Joachim presented a pro-
gram titled “VALE-ability: A Virtual 
Media Center for Students and Facul-
ty.”  The presenters discussed the abil-
ity to purchase streaming video licens-
es from Films Media Group, and relat-
ed their experiences at William Pater-
son University in providing video 
streaming to students and faculty 
through the Library’s online catalog. 
 Richard Kearney presented a ses-
sion titled “Pricing and Licensing of 
Electronic Resources: The Current 
Environment and Future Possibilities.”   
This session provided an overview and 
analysis of the current pricing and li-
censing models used by major elec-
tronic publishers and database ven-
dors, as well as alternative models 
used by smaller organizations.  The 
session also presented an evaluation of 
the consortial approach to licensing e-
resources. 
 Cheng Librarians also created two 
of the poster sessions for the Confer-
Cheng Librarians Among Presenters at VALE Users’ Conference 
ence.  Nancy Weiner and Kathy Ma-
langa developed a poster session relat-
ing the collaborative efforts of the 
Cheng Library to work with faculty in 
many academic areas.  The session 
was titled, “Cheng Library and the 
WPUNJ Campus Community: Cam-
paigning for Collaboration.” 
 Pamela Theus presented a poster 
session with Pat Murray of Fairleigh 
Dickinson University.  This session, 
titled “WorldCat Collection Analysis 
Tool,” described the methods and ad-
vantages of assessing a library collec-
tion using this product. 
 In addition to the above presenters, 
many Cheng librarians attended the 
conference: Joanna Holcombe, Judy 
Matthew, Debbie Pluss, Yvonne 
Roux, Susan Sabatino, Ray Schwartz, 
Kurt Wagner, Victoria Wagner and 
Bob Wolk.  
 VALEnj, the Virtual Academic 
Library Environment of New Jersey, 
was founded in 1998 as a consortium 
of college and university libraries in 
New Jersey.  Its main objective at 
that time was to provide access to 
scholarly resources.  The organization 
has grown since it formation and 
more than 50 libraries are currently 
members of VALE.

 Natesha Lena Eaton died on Feb-
ruary 26, 2007.  Natesha had been em-
ployed at the William Paterson Uni-
versity since 1987.  She joined the 
staff of the Access and Information 
Services unit of the Cheng Library on 
August 5, 2003 as secretary of the Ref-
erence Department.   
 Since 1987, Natesha had worked in 
many departments on campus: the 
Registrar’s Office, the Advisement 
Center, and the office of the Dean of 
the College of Education.  Before join-
ing the Library staff,  Natesha was 
employed as the secretary of the Math-
ematics Department. 
 Natesha was also a student at Wil-
liam Paterson University, and in 2004, 
she earned a B.A. in sociology with a 
concentration in criminal justice. 
 Natesha was survived by a brother, 
Derrick Eaton, a daughter, Ashanti 
Littlejohn, and a grandson, Kaeden 
Serrano.

COMMENCEMENT 
NOTES
COMMENCEMENT DAY at       
William Paterson University is a 
time of ceremony and pageantry, 
portions of which represent tradi-
tions dating back to medieval times. 
These notes on the history of the 
commencement ceremony are of-
fered in the hope that they enhance 
your appreciation and enjoyment.
WILLIAM PATERSON  
UNIVERSITY traces its roots to 
the city of Paterson, where it was 
founded in 1855.  For more than a 
century, training teachers for New 
Jersey schools was its exclusive mis-
sion. In 1951, the University moved 
to the present campus.  Originally 
known as Ailsa Farms, this 300-acre 
site was purchased by the state of 
New Jersey in 1948 from the family 
of Garret A. Hobart, twenty-fourth 
vice president of the United States.
The original manor house, built 
in 1877, was the weekend retreat 
and summer residence of the 
Hobart family.  Today the building 
is known as Hobart Manor and is 
home of the Office of the Presi-
dent and the Office of Institutional 
Advancement.  Hobart Manor was 
designated a national and state 
landmark in 1976. 
The University changed its name 
to Paterson State Teachers College 
when it relocated from Paterson in 
1951.  In 1966, the curriculum was 
expanded to include degree offer-
ings other than those leading to 
a teaching career.  In 1971, it was 
renamed The William Paterson 
College of New Jersey.  The change 
of name honored the man who was 
the state’s first senator, its second 
governor, and a United States 
Supreme Court Justice appointed 
by President George Washington, 
and reflected both the institution’s 
proud beginnings in the city that 
also bears his name and the legisla-
tive mandate to move from a teach-
ers college to a broad-based liberal 
arts institution.
In another historic milestone, 
William Paterson was awarded uni-
versity status by the Commission on 
Higher Education in June 1997.
The University presently offers 
thirty-two undergraduate and 
nineteen graduate programs in five 
colleges: Arts and Communication; 
Christos M. Cotsakos College of 
Business; Education; Humanities 
and Social Sciences; and Science and 
Health.  Today, it will award 294 
master’s degrees.
The MACE carried by Profes-
sor Linda Dye, a senior Univer-
sity faculty member, is used at all 
academic ceremonies.  In medieval 
times, maces were weapons of 
warfare, but today a mace is “a 
staff borne by, or carried before, 
a magistrate or other dignitary 
as an ensign of his authority.” It 
is the emblem and symbol of the 
president’s authority to administer 
the University. This mace was first 
used in the one hundred fifty-third 
commencement ceremony in 1987 
and was designed and crafted by

Ming Fay, professor of art.  The top 
piece, cast of brushed aluminum, 
features a center ball symbolizing 
universal knowledge, surrounded 
by four curved fins radiating out-
ward, representing the University’s 
community outreach.  The bottom 
portion, made of teak and inlaid 
with faux ivory, was carved with 
the assistance of Joseph VanPutten, 
an award-winning graduate of the 
University’s Art Department and 
current assistant professor of art.
The COLLEGE BANNERS in-
clude the class banner in the Uni-
versity’s colors of orange and black.

 The ACADEMIC PROCESSION 
begins with the heralding of the 
trumpeters announcing its arrival.  
The University marshal carrying the 
mace leads the procession.  After 
the candidates have taken their 
place, the University marshal leads 
the faculty to their places and then 
leads in the president, followed by 
the board of trustees, vice presi-
dents, deans, and other University 
officials.  The mace is presented at 
the center of the stage while those 
processing enter and take their 
places.  Once the mace is placed on 
the stand, the cermony begins.
ACADEMIC GOWNS, HOODS, 
and REGALIA represent more than 
elegance or colorful attire. Aca-
demic caps and gowns represent a 
tradition that reaches far back into 
the early days of the oldest univer-
sities of the Middle Ages.
The early European universities 
were church-founded; the students, 
being clerics, were obliged to wear 
prescribed gowns and caps at all 
times.  Caps and gowns were once 
common forms of clothing and were 
retained by the clergy when the la-
ity adopted more modern dress.
Though some universities here 
and abroad have other colors, the 
usual color for gowns in America 
is black.  Bachelor’s degree gowns 
have pointed sleeves, master’s 
degree gowns have oblong sleeves 
open at the wrist, and doctoral 
degree gowns have sleeves that are 
bell-shaped.  Also, on doctoral de-
gree gowns, the front is faced with 
black velvet with three bars of the 
same  across the sleeves, or these 
bars may be of velvet of the color 
distinctive of the faculty or subject 
to which the degree pertains.
Mortar boards (caps) are usually 
black. Hoods are lined with the of-
ficial color of the college or uni-
versity that conferred the degree.  
The velvet edging color represents 
the appropriate degree as follows: 
master of arts—white; master of arts 
in teaching—light blue; master of 
business administration—dark tan; 
master of education—light blue; 
master of fine arts—brown; master 
of music—pink; master of nursing 
—apricot; master of science—golden 
yellow.  In the ceremony, at center 
stage, the college dean and associate 
dean place the hood over the head of 
each candidate, symbolizing success-
ful completion of his or her degree.   
The gown and hood of the Uni-
versity marshal and the president 
were made especially for William 
Paterson ceremonies in the official 
colors of orange and black.
The PRESIDENT’S MEDAL 
worn by President Arnold Speert 
was first given in 1978.  It is award-
ed to individuals who have made 
outstanding contributions of service 
to the University community, to 
academe, or to society as a whole.  
The President’s Medal is awarded 
periodically to those who have 
given time, talent, or funds to the 
University; to those who have en-
hanced cultural, scientific, or artistic 
awareness in New Jersey; to those 
who provide a positive role model 
in personal achievement and/or 
outstanding service to others; and 
those who have strengthened high-
er education locally or nationally.
The AWARDING OF DEGREES 
for graduate students at William Pa-
terson University is accomplished 
in the following manner.  On behalf 
of the deans of the five colleges, 
the provost presents the master’s 
degree candidates. Each student 
processes to the platform where his 
or her name is read and then moves 
to center stage where the dean and 
associate dean of the college places 
the hood over the candidate’s head. 
Each candidate then proceeds 
across the stage where the dean of 
graduate studies gives him or her a 
diploma cover and shakes his or her 
hand.  When all candidates have 
been duly presented, the president 
of the University formally confers 
the appropriate degree.  This is ac-
complished when he says: 
“By the authority vested in me by the 
Board of Trustees, I confer on each of 
you the degrees you have just earned 
and for which you have been  
recommended.”
This program does not constitute the official list of graduates. Official graduation is certified by the transcript of record. 
Students who were identified degree candidates as of April 26, 2006, are included in this program.
The RECESSIONAL of the presi-
dent, officials, and faculty is once 
again led by the University marshal. 
The students recess behind the fac-
ulty.  The audience is requested to 
remain seated until the recessional 
is concluded.

the relocation of some reference ma-
terials.  These books are now shelved 
in the Reserve Reading Room, and 
infrequently used items were trans-
ferred to a storage area on the lower 
level of the Library where they are 
accessible if needed.   
Friends’ Lounge  
 The Friends’ Lounge is located in  
the space formerly occupied by the 
Graduate Research Center.  The spe-
cial carrels for graduate students have 
been relocated to a quiet area of the 
second floor.  The Friends’ Lounge is 
adjacent to the Library Auditorium 
and conveniently located for recep-
tions following events scheduled 
there. 
 Anne Ciliberti, Library Director, 
commented, “We are very excited 
about this new collection.  It is some-
thing we have envisioned for a while 
and we are delighted to be able to re-
spond to our users’ requests.”   
 We invite the University commu-
nity to visit the Library and check out 
a book from this new collection. 
Library patrons for immediate access 
to popular books.  The collection 
development policy of the Library 
states that the collection’s primary 
function is to support the curriculum 
and provide balance in the view-
points represented.  In contrast to 
academic libraries, public libraries 
devote large portions of their collec-
tions to popular reading materials 
and routinely acquire multiple copies 
of best sellers.   
 The Cheng Library is a member 
of a reciprocal borrowing agreement 
with the public libraries of Passaic 
County.  Students may borrow items 
from the Passaic County public li-
braries with their William Paterson 
University library card.  But this col-
lection provides the convenience of 
having a small selection of popular 
books available at the Library.  
 Response to the new collection 
has been very positive.  Circulation 
of these books is high and the lounge 
area is frequently occupied. 
 The redesign project necessitated 
CONNECTIONS
 In response to students’ needs 
and the changing nature of the refer-
ence collection, the Cheng Library 
has made several highly visible 
modifications on the first floor of the 
Library.  The area opposite the Ref-
erence Desk is now completely open 
and furnished with tables and lounge 
chairs.  This section is more inviting 
and spacious without the obstruction 
of five ranges of book shelves which 
were previously in this space. 
 It has always been a goal of the 
Library to offer a variety of seating 
and study areas.  The first floor near 
the Library entrance is an ideal place 
to develop as a seating area. Students 
have always congregated in this loca-
tion and the new design gives them 
more space in a heavily used area. 
Leisure-Reading Collection 
 The Library has also introduced a 
leased collection of popular fiction 
and nonfiction books.  This collec-
tion responds to the needs of Library 
users for non-academic reading ma-
terial.  One finding of the LibQUAL 
survey conducted last spring was the 
suggestion that the Library provide  
recreational reading materials.   
 The initial collection consists of 
200 books selected by the Library 
staff from a list of current best sell-
ers.  The collection is not static, how-
ever.  Books will be removed and 
added in order to maintain a continu-
ously updated assortment of titles.    
 Students and staff may make sug-
gestions for new titles to be added to 
this popular collection.  At present, 
the collection consists of popular 
fiction and nonfiction, biographies, 
mysteries, cookbooks and self-help 
books.  The books circulate for two 
weeks and may be renewed once. 
 The leisure-reading collection 
addresses an unmet need of Cheng

Magdalena Ruszala Joins Collection Development Department 
 Magdalena “Megan” Ruszala 
was hired as a Technical Library 
Assistant in Collection Develop-
ment and began work on January 9, 
2006.  Her responsibilities include 
placing and receiving Library orders 
for the librarians and the University’s 
faculty.  Other responsibilities in-
clude keeping track of orders, funds 
and accounts.  Megan also works on 
special projects in Collection Devel-
opment and has joined the Library 
Exhibits Committee. 
 Megan graduated from Montclair 
State University with a B.A. in Eng-
lish and Secondary Education Certi-
fication.  Before joining the Cheng 
Library staff, she taught 11th grade 
American Literature at West Orange 
High School.   
 While attending school, Megan 
worked part time at the South Or-
ange Public Library for six years.  
She missed the atmosphere of a li-
brary and decided to apply for this 
opening at William Paterson.  Megan 
is excited to be part of the Collection 
Development staff and is looking 
forward to contributing to the mis-
sion and goals of the Cheng Library. 
  Among Megan’s favorite pas-
times are reading and traveling - 
Puerto Rico is a favorite destination.  
She plans to enroll in graduate 
school, but has not yet decided the 
course of study, possibly library ser-
vice.  
catalog and assisted with the pro 
bono cataloging of a middle and high 
school library video collection. 
 In his free time, Mark likes read-
ing and traveling in the U.S. and 
abroad.  He has lived in Brussels for 
six months, been on safari in Kenya 
and Tanzania, and tutored traveling 
performers in a touring show in the 
Midwest.   
 A new resident of Wayne, Mark 
now enjoys exploring northern New 
Jersey and the surrounding area.  He 
is looking forward to working with

Theological Seminary’s missionary 
collection.  Mark also interned at 
Cassidy Cataloguing Services in 
Harrison, N.J. where he cataloged 
web resources for their online law 
 Mark Sandford joined the Li-
brary’s Resource Management Divi-
sion on February 6, 2006 as the new 
Special Formats Cataloger.  In this

Author and Wolf Watcher Presents Lecture 
 
 On April 2, 2006, the Friends of the Cheng Library hosted a program 
on the natural habitat of wolves.  The author Brian Connolly discussed his 
observation of wolves in Yellowstone National Park.  Their captivating 
behavior motivated him to write the young adult novel, Wolf Journal.  The 
lecture and presentation, titled “How Observing Wolves in Their Natural 
Habitat Inspired a Novel,” was held in the Cheng Library Auditorium. 
 
 By the 1970’s, the Northern Rocky Mountain wolf, a subspecies of the 
gray wolf, was nearly extinct in Yellowstone National Park due to man’s 
fear of Canis lupus and the practice of predator control.  In 1995, three 
packs of gray wolves were reintroduced in the park.  These wolves would 
prove to thrive in this ecosystem and grow in numbers far exceeding the 
expectations of the field biologists who released them.  Connolly con-
cluded the program with two videos by Bob Landis who has produced 
many wildlife films for National Geographic.  The videos showed the life 
of the Druid Peak Pack in Yellowstone.  Connolly has watched these 
wolves for three months every summer and one month in the winter for 
the past nine years.  His fascination with these wolves inspired his first 
novel. 
 
 Connolly shared with the audience his unusual collection of words and 
quotations which he keeps on index cards and uses for inspiration in his 
writing.  One of his favorite words is “crepuscular” meaning “becoming 
active at twilight or before daylight” — times considered best for wolf 
watching.  He also shared a quote of Mark Twain, “The difference be-
tween the right word and the almost right word is the difference between 
lightning and a lightning bug,” and another of Friedrich Nietzsche, “One 
must live in a world of chaos in order to give birth to a dancing star.” 
 
 One of Connolly’s tips for successful writing was his suggestion for 
capturing the immediacy of the moment: “Don’t wait until the next day to 
write something down; the thoughts will be gone.”  When conducting his 
observation of the wolves of Yellowstone, Connolly once stopped on the 
side of the road after watching the wolves and pulled out his chair to sit 
and write.  When finished, he was astonished to find that he had written 
what would eventually become chapter six of Wolf Journal.   
 
 Brian Connolly is a graduate of Edinboro University in Pennsylvania, 
where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education.  He com-
pleted his graduate studies at the State University of New York at Oswego 
and Cortland, Elmira College and the University of Massachusetts at 
North Adams.  He taught creative writing in the New York public schools 
for 28 years until moving to Oregon to pursue his writing career.   
 
 Connolly is the author of Bradley’s Christmas Adventure and he has 
also written short stories and poems for literary magazines.  He has a new 
book due out this summer, Not Far From Town, which is a collection of 
short stories and a novella.  Connolly expects to complete the sequel to 
Wolf Journal, entitled Hawk, in 2007.

 Assistants Receive 
 Library Awards 
 
 The Cheng Library’s Annual 
Student Assistants’ Recognition 
and Awards Reception was held on 
April 11, 2006 in the Library’s 
Paterson Room.  Three students 
were selected to receive the 
Library’s Outstanding Student 
Assistant Award for 2005-2006. 
 The awards were presented at a 
reception held in honor of the 
students.  This annual reception 
gives the Library staff an 
opportunity to express their 
appreciation to all of the student 
assistants who help with the daily 
operations of the Library in the 
public service and technical 
processing areas. 
 To be eligible for the award, 
student assistants must have 
worked in the Library for at least 
three semesters and have good 
attendance records.  In addition, 
the students’ job evaluations must 
have significantly exceeded their 
written job descriptions. 
 Enyonam “Bright” Kpo works 
in the Collection Development 
Department.  Bright is a nursing 
major who has worked in the 
Library for three semesters.   
 Farhana Begum and Amirah 
Scudder were recognized for their 
outstanding work in the Periodicals 
Department. 
 Amirah Scudder, a psychology 
major, is currently in her fourth 
semester in Periodicals.  She will 
graduate in May. 
  Farhana Begum is also 
currently in her fourth semester in 
Periodicals.  She is majoring in 
Nursing and is a member of the 
Nursing Honor Society. 
 Congratulations to Bright, 
Farhana and Amirah, and a big 
“thank you” to all of the Library’s 
student assistants.

 Amy Grace Job, technical ser-
vices librarian for 37 years, died on 
February 12, 2006 at her home in 
West Milford.  She was 63.  Amy is 
survived by her husband, Kenneth 
Job, three children and two grand-
children. 
 Amy retired in January, 2006 
following a long career marked by 
both the constancy of her position as 
technical services librarian and by 
the variety of the multiple roles she 
assumed in other areas of teaching 
and librarianship. 
 During her 37-year career at Wil-
liam Paterson University, Amy 
worked closely with librarians 
throughout the State.  She was ac-
tively involved in two State-wide 
associations, the New Jersey Library 
Association and the New Jersey As-
sociation of School Librarians. 
 Amy was also well know for her 
work at the University.  She taught

for many years in the Educational 
Media Program of the College of 
Education and was active in the Fac-
ulty Senate Research Council.  She  
participated faithfully in the annual 
Thomas Jefferson Lecture Series and 
the New Jersey History Day events. 
 More than one hundred and fifty 
friends, colleagues and associates 
attended a memorial service for Amy 
on March 14, 2006 in the Cheng Li-
brary Auditorium.  Bill Duffy, Coor-
dinator of Reference Services, mod-
erated the program and Deacon 
Philip Thiuri provided the invocation 
and valediction. 
 President Speert commented on 
the sense of purpose which pervaded 
Amy’s life.  He noted the responsi-
bilities she assumed and the myriad 
goals she accomplished during her 
career. 
 Three professional colleagues 
also spoke during the memorial.  Pat 
Tumulty of the New Jersey Library 
Association reviewed Amy’s years 
of service in this Association and 
credited her leadership with many 
of the activities of the Technical 
Services Section. 
 Mary Lewis of the New Jersey 
Association of School Librarians 
recalled Amy’s playful involvement 
with the Association at its confer-
ences where she once appeared 
dressed as Paddington Bear.  On a 
more serious note, Amy also helped 
draft certification requirements for 
school librarians in New Jersey. 
 Alyse Bolander of the Pi 
Lambda Theta Honor Society re-
membered Amy’s friendly, caring 
and respectful nature and her faith-
ful efforts in cooordinating the So-
ciety’s annual book sale. 
 The Library staff extends ex-
pressions of sympathy to Amy’s 
family.

 Starting as a one-night engage-
ment at New York City’s Village 
Vanguard in 1965 under the direc-
tion of Thad Jones, the Thad Jones/
Mel Lewis Orchestra  established a 
reputation as one of the most innova-
tive orchestras in jazz.  Thad Jones 
later served as William Paterson 
University’s first Jazz Studies Direc-
tor. 
 Now known as the Vanguard 
Jazz Orchestra, the ensemble re-
mains a vibrant and groundbreaking 
force on the contemporary jazz 
scene.  In addition to their interna-
tional and national concert perform-
ances, several members of the Van-
guard Jazz Orchestra serve as fac-
ulty members in the Jazz Studies 
Program. 
 The jazz musicians interviewed 
are John Mosca, Cecil Bridgewater, 
Billy Harper, Hank Jones (brother 
of Thad Jones), Garnett Brown, 
Jerry Dodgion, George Mraz and Ed 
Xiques.   
 Professors Newman and Wolk 
have submitted a grant application 
to the New Jersey Historical Com-
mission to transcribe the taped inter-
views into text -- the format consid-
ered most useful for preserving oral 
history materials. 
Eight Oral Histories Added to the Cheng Library’s Jazz Archive 
 As part of its mission to create 
original research materials, the 
Cheng Library’s Jazz Archive now 
includes eight videotaped interviews 
with former members of the Thad 
Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. The in-
terviews are part of an oral history 
project co-directed by Professors 
Tim Newman and Bob Wolk.   
 These interviews serve to docu-
ment the history of the Thad Jones/
Mel Lewis Orchestra.  Funds are
