This paper was presented at the Nineteenth Annual Conference of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE), in Orlando, Florida.We share how several middle school teachers dealt with situations in which they did not understand their students’ thinking. Our goal is to discuss strategies and decisions related to dealing with the complexities of classroom situations involving cognitively demanding tasks
