The map shows 3 CBBP’s main locations, Sekota and Konso respectively in North and South Ethiopia and Kilimanjaro in North Tanzania.     The Relevance of Rest Periods in Rangeland Management for Plant Cover and Species Composition in Tataouine, Tunisia, Spring

    In southern Tunisia, rangelands are overexploited because the animal needs highly exceed plant production. For most of the skeletal desert soil, the overall vegetation covering oscillates between 1 and 10%; the perennial aerial biomass is lower than 100 kg of dry matter (DM)/ha/year. Being representative of different desert rangelands of Dhahar in southern Tunisia, Chenini is characterized by an arid Mediterranean bioclimate with a moderate winter. Rainfall is low and sporadic; the mean annual is estimated to be around 80 mm. Temperatures are generally cold in winter and hot in summer with a mean annual of about 20°C. The water balance is greatly affected by the low dense soil cover and exposition to winds. The local soils are predominantly not suitable for agricultural practices and have an exclusively pastoral vocation (skeletal soils). Despite the fragility of its potential, the region is overexploited by livestock during pluvial years. As a result, the spontaneous flora is found more degraded and its productive capacity reduced. The function starts by using a dataset were collected in April 2017 from 7 arid zones in southern Tunisia (Chenini community-Tataouine), which cover about 10600 ha including 5 private rangelands and one communal in addition to the continuously grazed site considered as control were retained for detailed monitoring-assessment study. We examined vegetation changes in the spatial and temporal patterns of community structure and rangeland function in response to the period of rest. This design will permit to appreciate the potential of regeneration and the persistence of plant species by monitoring the evolution of some descriptors (Plant cover: Percentage of the ground area covered by live aerial parts of plants). The state of the soil surface (wind veil, crust, stones, litter) is also studied in order to monitor and assess changes of soil structure

    Improved Barley Near Infra-red Spectroscopy (NIRS) equation

    A total of 700 spring barley straw samples of genotypic diversity from diverse environments in Morocco were selected and scanned using a FOSS Near Infra-red Spectroscopy (NIRS) System 5000 spectrophotometer in the 1100nm to 2498nm spectral region. Calibration equations for feed quality traits (n=344) were developed using data from NIRS spectra and wet chemistry of representative samples and tested through external validation with the samples (n=137) not included in the calibration sets. A modified partial least-squares (MPLS) regression with independent validation used to confirm the equations and identify possible spectral outliers (GH-value>3, where GH is the Global Mahalanobis distance). Values for coefficient of determination (r2), standard error of prediction SEP(C) and ratio of performance deviation (RPD) were used for validation of the equations. The calibration equations for chemical composition parameters, ash (r2=0.89; RPD=3.02), crude protein (r2 = 0.98; RPD = 6.43), acid detergent fiber (r2 = 0.94; RPD = 4.18), neutral detergent fiber (r2 = 0.88; RPD = 3.89), lignin (r2 = 0.92; RPD = 3.56) and IVOMD (r2=0.64; RPD=1.66) showed good performance and provided reliable estimates of the traits in samples of the validation set. Results demonstrated that feed quality traits of barley straw can be estimated reliably within barley cultivars using NIRS calibration equations integrating broad taxonomic variability and can be used for screening in all cases but IVOMD. The use of the NIRS can facilitate rapid, cost-effective and reliable decision making by researchers and farmers
