    Impact of rest duration and land tenure on species richness, frequency and plant cover of degraded rangelands in Tunisia

    To investigated changes in the spatial and temporal patterns of community structure and rangeland function in response to the period of rest. A total of 20 sites in southern Tunisia (Tataouine) covering more than 15000 ha including 12 private rangelands and 4 communal subjected to grazing management, in addition to 4 freely grazed site which considered as control were retained for detailed monitoring-assessment study. This data could be one of the tools to examine the impact and potential of traditional best practices for rangeland restoration on regeneration and the persistence of plant species by monitoring the evolution of specific characters (global plant cover, specific frequencies, flora richness and the plant density, biomass, rangeland production and carrying capacity). The state of the soil surface (wind veil, crust, stones, litter) is also studied to monitor and assess changes of soil structure. This Data will not be open access for the time being as it will be used for potential publication which will recommend the best practice for rangeland rehabilitation under climate change in the dry areas. Afterward it will be open access to allow the researcher to have database about the rangelands condition in certain time under certain managements. Vegetation was monitored during spring, in April 2019, in the peak season of primary production and when development of the annual vegetation was at its prime. Vegetation cover and species composition were estimated using the point-quadrats method along three 50-m long transects in each site and with 100 points per transect. A fine pin was descended to the ground every 50 cm along the line. Each of the 100 hits per line was recorded according to the plant species and type of ground touched (Stones, Sand, Crust, Litter). The total vegetation cover is calculated as: VC = (n/N) × 100 with n: the number of hits of all plant species and N: the total number of hits (100 hits in our case).     The Response of Grazed Vegetation in Relation to the Type of Landscape in the Mountain Rangelands, Tajikistan

    The dataset reports on information collected to investigate the response of grazed vegetation in relation to landscape type in the mountain rangelands of Tajikistan over two seasons in 2016 (autumn and spring). Slopes facing the north and south, and grazed during different seasons were randomly selected and separated according to winter and summer pastures for each slope; summer pastures were grazed during the summer period, whereas the winter pastures were grazed during the winter period. The climate is moderately warm, with short warm winter and hot dry long summers, and the average annual rainfall ranges between 230-350 mm, whereas average yearly temperature ranges between 15.6-20 degrees Celsius. The dominant native species in the study site are the drought-tolerant white saxaul (Haloxylon persicum Bunge ex Boiss. & Buhse) while the Ferulafoetida (Bunge) Regel is widely expanded in areas with high load of livestock grazing. On each selected slope, five 100 m parallel transect lines, spaced 10 m apart were used to sample the vegetation. At every 10 m within each transect, 1 square meter quadrat was laid for monitoring biomass for annual plants, plant cover and density as well as species count. Inside the sub-quadrats, the standing crop was clipped at ground level and weighed before oven-drying at 85 degrees Celsius for 24 h, to estimate average standing crop calculated in kg/ha. To determine plant species cover, species were recorded along each transect using the line intercept method as described by whereas plant density was estimated by counting the number of individuals and dividing by the quadrat's area.     Estimation of shrub canopy cover by digital vegetation charting technique (DVCT), Syria

    The shrub fodder component should be measured to avoid underestimation of the carrying capacity of rangelands. In this study, we present a fast, reliable and non-destructive method to estimate canopy vegetation cover to obtain aboveground shrub biomass. The experiment was conducted under field conditions in northwest Syria, where seedlings of seven shrub species were monitored for one year: Atriplex leucoclada (Moq.) Boiss., A. halimus L., A. lentiformis (Torr.) S. Watson, A. canescens (Pursh) Nutt., A. nummularia Lindl., Salsola vermiculata L. and Haloxylon aphyllum (C.A. Meyer) Bunge. The experimental layout was a randomized complete block design with five replications. We explored the effectiveness of digital vegetation charting technique (DVCT) for estimating shrub canopy cover. Aboveground shrub biomass was clipped to estimate the dry matter (DM) weight per species and to determine its relationship to canopy cover. In this study, an estimate of greenness (percent green vegetation cover) was extracted by way of greenness algorithms.
