No full textThesis (B.A. in International Affairs, Economics and Finance)--John Cabot University, Fall 2014.This purpose of this thesis is to analyse the role of women in Mexican drug cartels and verify whether they are merely passive agents in these organizations, or if they can be considered fully fledged members of the same. To do so, this thesis will review the most important theories connecting gender and crime and offer an in-depth P n analysis of the problem of drug-trafficking in Mexico and what has been done to contrast it. Ultimately, by examining what are the positions covered by women in Mexican drug cartels, it will be argued that women are perfectly capable of operating in the criminal world, despite being systematically underestimated in current investigative approaches and the relevant literature
Expect Monsters in Extreme Climates
No full textThesis (B.A. in Art History, Minor in Creative Writing)--John Cabot University, Spring 2014.The focus of this thesis is on the visual representation of monstrous races in an English Psalter dating to 1262-1265: the Map (British Library Add. MS 28681). In it the monstrous races appear on the very edge of one of two mappaemundi that constitute the original painted decoration of the manuscript. These are on the recto and verso of folio 9, the first one will be examined with additional care and attention for it includes the actual depiction of the monstrous races. Nonetheless, the map on the verso will be brought into discussion for it cannot be left out of the interpretation as a whole. The goal of the thesis is to come to terms with some of the ways in which the concept of edge, margin or boundary informed the visual construction of monstrous races during the Middle Ages in general, and the thirteenth century in particular
Community currencies and sustainability: Three case-studies
No full textThesis (B.A. in International Affair)--John Cabot University, Spring 2014.The présent thesis explores the working mechanisms of three alternative community currency Systems as tools to promote sustainable behavior: the créditas in Argentinian barter networks, the Ithaca HOURS in upstate New York, and the NuSpaarpas in Rotterdam, Netherlands. A chapter is dedicated to the analysis of each System's origins, évolution and sustainability achievements, which are measured in terms of localization, réduction of ecological footprint, community building, collective action and the building of new social and économie institutions. These fîve parameters are based on an alternative concept of économies, which emphasizes the function of money as a médium of exchange among a society's members. By transforming the traditional production and consomption possibilities of mainstream money, community currencies contribute to solve several adverse économie, social and ecological effects of globalization
Fascist Urban Planning: Social Tensions and Political Stereotypes in the Eternal City
No full textThesis (B.A. in International Affairs, Minor in Art History)--John Cabot University, Fall 2014.This thesis has the aim of understand how the fascist urban plan, which reshaped Rome under Mussolini, prevented classes to integrate, and instead intensified a political m tension between low-working class people and the upper-middle class. This led to social tensions and contrasts due to the malcontent and resentments of the lower classes living in inhuman conditions. Nowadays, the different neighborhoods in Rome are stereotyped as left wing or right wing oriented, due to the fact that popular quarters are usually from the left, and the quarters for the capitalistic-bourgeoisie society is from right. But here in Rome Fascism urban changes, and the conditions in which people lived, added something more to the general political tension. The first chapter analyzes the historical background of Rome since it began the new Italian Capital. The advent of fascism and Mussolini’s dreams of grandeur that led him to start projects for urban and architectural development in Rome, recalling the capital’s glorious past. The second chapter focuses on the conditions of the peripheries and the borgate, populated by the low class, living in terrible conditions. The third chapter comprehends two cases study on Garbatella and Roma Nord, to analyze the conditions of the working class and the upper class
The Populist Regime of François Duvalier: The Role Of Ideology, Terror, and Foreign Policy
No full textThesis (B.A. in History, Minor in International Affairs)--John Cabot University, Fall 2013.This thesis examines the Duvalier regime under the reign of Franfois Duvalier. Duvalier, commonly referred to as “Papa Doc”, came to power in Haiti in 1957 on a populist platform. After a short time he became a corrupt dictator who no longer had the masses interests at heart. The Duvalier regime was one of the most oppressive and authoritarian in the Caribbean and Greater Latin American world, but Duvalier enjoyed much popular support during his entire reign. One cannot help but wonder how Duvalier and his regime managed to have widespread support when the masses were being terrorized and the standard of living declined for the large peasant population in Haiti. This thesis argues that Duvalier’s populist regime reflects the dangers of populist movements worldwide. Since Haitian Independence in 1804, there has always been tension between the Mulatto elite and large Black population. Much of previous Haitian political history was authoritarian, corrupt and did little good for the Haitian people. Furthermore, the majority of previous political leaders had always neglected Haiti’s African past. Duvalier however, valued Haiti’s African historical and cultural past. Overall, the Duvalier regime managed to survive and Papa Doc had much popular support for two main reasons. First, because of the pervasive Terror carried out by Duvalier’s paramilitary organization. Second, because of the appeal of his Black mi Nationalist ideology. In the eyes of many. Papa Doc was the best political option Haiti had to offer. Lastly, as a staunch anti-Communist, Duvalier managed to use the tensions of the Cold War to his advantage

In particular, it examines whether consent is an issue in the definitional frameworks related to the forms of exploitation associated with trafficking and formulates a recommendation to take eventual definitional conflicts into consideration
