The Popular History of the Norman Warrior-Caste
Thesis (B.A. in History)--John Cabot University, Fall 2021.The Normans are renowned for their feats of conquest during the Middle Ages, yet these feats are often only ascribed to that of the titular Dukes of Normandy, such as Rollo, William the Conqueror, and Robert Guiscard. They did not undertake these campaigns of conquest alone. Behind them stood a caste of Norman warriors that contributed massively to the history of Normandy from the early 10th century until the end of the 12th. The objective of this thesis is to trace the popular history of the Norman warrior-caste from their genesis as the ‘Northmen’ in the early 10th century, to their rapid assimilation within the Duchy of Normandy in the years that followed, through their conquest of southern Italy, and ultimately to what became of them after the period of Norman conquest
BRICS and the future of climate policy
Thesis (B.A. in Political Science, Minor in Legal Studies and Philosophy)--John Cabot University, Spring 2021.One of the most pressing contemporary political issues in need of effective leadership isclimate change. To date climate policies leaders have not introduced legislation which haseffectively mitigated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to the level needed to protect the climate. Thus, there is a critical need for a new and functional policy. Therefore, this research wasconducted with the research question: who should lead a novel climate policy?Existing research is divided between citing developed countries, the historical leaders, ora new cooperating power led by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) aspotential leaders. To determine the advantageous choice between the two groups the researchwas conducted through a literature review of existing theories, and counter-arguments againstboth sides. Then, the researched continues with a theoretical drafting of a BRICS led climatepolicy to determine if creating a novel policy of this nature is possible and if so whatadvantageous characteristics could it support that historical climate policy has not. Post-researchconclusions ultimately revealed that BRICS is capable of including novel advantages in a climatepolicy which could increase its efficacy over developed-country led policies
Do the current EU antitrust regulations under the articles 101 and 102 of Treaty on the Functioning of European Union, prohibiting the dominant companies from abusing their dominant position, strike balance between preservation of internal free market and business development?
Thesis (B.A. in Political Science)--John Cabot University, Fall 2021.The issue of regulation of businesses and emerging corporations has been pertinent to the European Community since its foundation. Over the time period of just over twenty years, from the day when the Treaty on the Functioning of European Union had entered into force, the European states and authorities were issued regulations which became enforced upon the undertakings that participate in the economy of the EU. With the emergence of businesses and the wide range of services, available to the customers there arose competition as a natural consequence of the business development. The EC had issued articles 81 and 82 (which later were turned into the article 101 and 102 of TFEU), which provided substantial guidance to private individuals and the corporations alike, outlining two central prohibitions to the political economy: article 101 prohibited the formation of mergers and cartels, whilst the article 102 explicitly forbids the companies, holding a dominant position to abuse such position. With the arrival of digital businesses on the EU market the undertakings faced significant legal challenges, which were proceeded with substantial financial fines and substantial restrictions on the activity of many companies. Many of those challenges arose in the age of New Economy, which quickly began to present the new realities of political economy to the European community and demand rapid modernization of the legal standards. This work will explore the existing antitrust rules of the European Union, examine the impact of these rules on the modern digital businesses and will seek to prescribe a solution, based on the already existing directives and regulations that are in place. The research topic is based on the question of the current antitrust regulations in the EU under Article 102 of the TFEU prohibiting the dominance of companies being capable of balancing among following development of digital businesses and ensuring a competitive and free market. The digital markets act has been proposed for the unification of the national legislations of the member states for prohibiting the dominant companies is a gatekeeper from using unfair practices while preserving the scope of innovation and technological development
The Systematic Discrimination Against the Amhara People in Ethiopia
Thesis (B.A. in International Affairs)--John Cabot University, Fall 2021.The claims of minority nations and ethnic groups is widely exercised in different countries, manyof them have made political resolutions for the minority and ethnic based questions. Though inEthiopia, like other countries, the minority nations and different ethnic groups raised thequestions of equality and freedom, it was not giving a democratic and appropriate politicalsolution. In relation to declaration of different international instruments from various human anddemocratic perspectives, from other countries political experiences, since 1970s, in Ethiopia, thedifferent political and social groups had been organized in freedom and equality politicallymotivated groups. For the country’s very long [three thousand years] political, economic, social and culturalbackgrounds, in relation with diversity of languages and settlement of population, either politicalor social groups, none of them couldn’t brought a political solution and many of them collapsed,in connection to variation of the global political conditions, some of them are being there, in1960s and 1970s political program and others are being successful and they abled to govern thestate. In respect to these conditions, a dangerous politics to the country and its population has beenseen in the past 40-50 years, the country divided into pieces of states, having legally recognizedform of states, as an independent and internationally recognized sovereign states, competing eachother’s and conflicted for any reasons. Because of this, the research paper has focussed on theAmhara people, which is more susceptible for ethnic cleansing and genocide, why, how and onwhat conditions, Ethiopia preferred to divide politics ethnically as a political solution for itsproblems, which has more than 80 ethnic groups. Generally, it’s possible to understand from this research, the ethnic based politics in Ethiopia isresulted in conflict and enmity in between different ethnic groups, it’s a cause for millions ofpeople to be internally displaced, it’s a cause for thousands of people death, it’s a cause of ethniccleansing and genocide of the Amhara people and which is leading Ethiopia to be divide in topieces of different states and failed state

Economic Trends and Populism in Italy
Thesis (B.A. in Political Science, Minor in Communications)--John Cabot University, Spring 2021.The objective of the respective thesis is to highlight how the economic crisis has favored the spread of populism in Italy. The analysis includes a qualitative research on the social condition of the Italian people, which has prompted the creation of populist movements within the state. Schools of thought and theories are discussed along with economic data to illustrate the underlying ways in which populism has managed to conquer the hearts and minds of the Italian people and infiltrate into its political sphere. The economic crisis of 2007 is then examined, first on a global scale and second, on a national scale, taking into consideration the development of unemployment and social discontent. Following, a case study is conducted on the two most important populist parties in Italy – the “Lega Nord” and the “5 Star Movement.” The respective case study is primarily based on the figures of Matteo Salvini and Luigi Di Maio and examines the ways in which, the two political actors became the leaders of the corresponding parties. The analysis concludes with the awareness that populism is now a dominant movement within Italian politics and has become the voice of the people
John Ruskin: Piazza di Santa Maria del Pianto, Rome, 1840
Master of Arts in Art History -- John Cabot University, Spring 2021.Upon John Ruskin’s first trip to Rome in 1840, when he was twenty-one years old, he created the drawing Piazza di Santa Maria del Pianto. The drawing is a picturesque view, a view Ruskin had been searching for his entire trip to the Continent. Ruskin at this time was ill, broken hearted, and questioning his direction in life. These factors, as well as his exposure to new artistic methods and theories, by way of the artists he met in Rome, catapulted him into a crisis that would have lasting effects on his life and work. From Ruskin’s autobiography Praeterita, it can be seen that Piazza di Santa Maria del Pianto was a defensive declaration of his views of art. The image was part of a process that enabled him to define his future voice as an artist and critic. Piazza di Santa Maria del Pianto was located just outside the main gate of Rome’s Jewish Ghetto. The ghetto was enforced by Pope Paul IV in 1555 and remained in effect until the Unification of Italy in 1870. The ghetto was subsequently demolished in the early twentieth century. Ruskin’s drawing was completed, form an on-site sketch, while the ghetto was still enforced. In addition to the importance of the drawing in the context of Ruskin’s life and work, Piazza di Santa Maria del Pianto has great significance to Jewish and Roman history in that Ruskin has preserved a nineteenth-century view of the primary piazza of Rome’s Jewish Ghetto that is no longer attainable
Jean-Victor Schnetz
Thesis (B.A. in Classical Studies)--John Cabot University, Spring 2021.Jean-Victor Schnetz was one of the most famous painters of his generation — a liminal figure in the transition between Neo-Classicism and Romanticism, whose legacy remains poorly grasped by academic publications. This biographical monograph has faithfully reconstructed from letters, catalogues, salon exhibitions and critical essays, sources about the Swiss painter’s life. Framed through a corpus of textual evidence, and a catalogue raisoné of the painter’s surviving works, this thesis sheds light on the little studied influence of osteology, textile studies, archeology and literary criticism on the reception of painters in the 19th century. In doing so, this work challenges the existing methodological framework used in contemporary art historical writing by returning the subject to an interpretative model based on a scientific way of understanding painting, linked to a non-exiting demarcation between psychology and physiology. In doing so, it offers a firm handle on iconographical studies, which ultimately frame this thesis’s claims
Entangled Agencies: Reframing Roman Articulated Dolls
Master of Arts in Art History -- John Cabot University, Spring 2021.While previous scholarship has addressed possible social purposes of the dolls, I examine the material agency of the doll itself. In this paper, I first examine how the visual qualities of the doll hold agency, specifically in regard to imperial-image referencing on a small-scale private image of a woman in the form of a doll. After examining the visual agency of the object, I seek to consider how the materiality of the doll gives it purpose as a “thing” and initiates viewer participation. Lastly, I examine the power of haptic qualities related to touch, adornment, and sensation in forming an interactive loop between object and participant in these objects. I aim to view the dolls as physical assemblages in terms of agency and ‘thingly-ness,’ building upon the previous archaeological and social reading. To examine a Roman articulated doll in this way, that is, an object that has the power to exert an impetus from the viewer, I will consider the major aspects which contribute to its ‘thingly’ agency, namely its visual, material, and haptic agency. These qualities form an intersected map, marking inherent points of the object which contribute to its ability to act on participants. Through a return to the ‘thing’, Roman articulated dolls can be examined as a class of things that has power in reciprocal exchanges. These observations regarding the visual, material, and haptic agency of the dolls have been approached using theories which emphasize webs of connections between objects and humans. Rather than viewing objects as static and representational, these theories premise that things have reciprocal power in exchanges. Namely, thing theory, Actor Network theory, and Entanglement are useful in observing objects in ways which do not rely on purely social or iconographic information. When objects become things, something rooted in agency, they too can be examined as a type of player which causes action
Self Identity, Illusion, and Reality in Luigi Pirandello’s Theatre
