At present, with the growing energy demand, the consumption of oil is the cause of pollution with great environmental impact in the world. For this reason, a pressing need arises to take advantage of new clean energy sources that reduce emissions of polluting gases, thus ensuring environmental and energy sustainability. A promising alternative to fossil fuels is the energy carrier hydrogen. The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by water electrolysis represents the best method of production of high purity hydrogen free of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), ideal for clean energy conversion systems. According to recent research, MoS 2 (molybdenum disulfide) and Ni 2 P (nickel phosphide) are some alternative materials to platinum (considered the best HER catalyst), which have individually demonstrated good catalytic activity in HER. On the other hand, it has been shown that the use of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as support increases the surface area of the electrodes and improves their electrochemical stability. In this work, the integration of Ni 2 P, MoS 2, and MWCNT were carried out using two different routes to design a catalyst composed of these materials for use in HER. The synthesis of the Ni 2 P/MoS 2 / MWCNT compound consisted in sequentially using a solvothermal method to produce MoS 2 layers over the MWCNT and then a thermal decomposition reaction method to grow Ni 2 P nanoparticles in MoS 2 /MWCNT. Additionally, a mixture of MoS 2 /MWCNT (synthesized by a solvothermal method) with Ni 2 P /MWCNT (synthesized by a thermal decomposition reaction method) was made to obtain (Ni 2 P, MoS 2 ) /MWCNT. The SEM and TEM images revealed that MoS 2 has a sheet-like morphology flake-type, and the Ni 2 P nanoparticles have a spherical-like morphology, both exhibiting a uniform growth on the MWCNTs.The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) demonstrated the integration of Ni 2 P, MoS 2 , and MWCNT. In Ni 2 P/MoS 2 /MWCNT the formation of Ni 2 P on MoS 2 /MWCNT was confirmed, and in (Ni2P, MoS 2 )/MWCNT the combination of Ni 2 P and MoS 2 was proved, each individually supported in MWCNT.Furthermore, the catalytic activity of the materials was evaluated using electrochemical techniques such as linear sweep voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). In electrochemical measurements, it was observed that when comparing Ni 2 P/MWCNT, MoS 2 /MWCNT, and Ni 2 P/MoS 2 / MWCNT, the mixture of (Ni 2 P, MoS 2 )/MWCNT exhibited the best ..

Yucca valida (Asparagaceae) is an endemic plant of the Baja California Peninsula that distributes through the Central Desert, the Vizcaino Desert and the Magdalena Plains. Genetic divergences associated with historical geological and climatic events have been recorded for various species in these regions. Since Y. valida populations are dominant in this area; it is expected that they have experienced fragmentation related to these events. To identify how many genetic lineages Y. valida exist within its geographical distribution, to reconstruct the species' demographic history and interpret it in the context of the history of the Peninsula; the distribution of the genetic variation of the species was evaluated through neutral Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs). Additionally, the species' diversification time was estimated from analyzes based on the molecular clock, employing putative chloroplast genome sequences. A total of 140 individuals from 20 localities were genotyped using 1440 SNPs. The genetic structure analyzes and nuclear genealogies were consistent with the identification of three divergent monophyletic lineages. Historical scenario simulations provided support for the simultaneous divergence of the three nuclear lineages. A high genetic diversity was detected. A positive and significant relation between geographic distances to genetic differentiation indicated isolation by distance. To estimate the divergence time of the species, 36 putative chloroplast genome sequences of Y. valida were recovered. In the phylogenetic analysis, the 36 sequences of Y. valida grouped into a single clade, suggesting a monophyletic origin. The estimated diversification time indicates that the origin of the species occurred between 190,000 and 420,000 years ago. Based on the age estimated for the species, it is proposed that the diversification of the three nuclear lineages is related to the reduction of the suitable habitat and the fragmentation of species' populations caused by historical climatic changes while a restricted genetic flow is maintaining the differentiation signals

However, due to increase fishing pressure, fluctuating FM production and higher demand from aquaculture, has led to high prices of this protein source and concerns of the future sustainability of the industry. The latter has led to the search for alternative protein sources to meet the high protein demand and nutritional requirements of the marine fish. In this respect, the inclusion of functional compounds, as prebiotics, in diets with high content of alternative vegetal proteins like the soybean meal (SBM), increases growth, digestibility and health of the fish. The California Yellowtail (Seriola dorsalis) is a species with great economic importance in North America and Mexico recently began the commercial scale culture of this species. Nonetheless, little information has been published to date evaluating the inclusion of functional compounds in diets based in alternatives sources to FM. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the inclusion of a commercial prebiotic, Grobiotic®-A, at 3 levels of inclusion in diets with high SBM content, to determine the effects in growth performance, digestion, intestinal health (interleucine 1- beta (IL-1β), heat-shock protein 70 (HSP70), maltase-glucoamylase (mga) and aminopeptidase N (apn)) and intestinal microbiome composition using denaturizing gradient gelelectrophoresis (DGGE) in California Yellowtail juveniles. Four isoproteic (48% CP) and isolipidic (15% CL) diets based on 64% SBM and different inclusion levels of GBA (0, 1, 2 and 3%) were formulated. The diets were randomly assigned and evaluated in triplicate in a seawater recirculating system composed of 12 tanks. The fish were fed to apparent satiation three times a day for a period of 42 days. At the end of the experiment no significant effects of GBA dietary inclusion were found in terms of growth, feed efficiency and fish proximate composition. Significant effects were found on the specific activity of lipase in the intestinal region and amylase of the intestinal and pyloric regions. In vitro protein digestibility of diets with 2 and 3% of GBA significantly increased compared to the 1% GBA diet. The relative expression of genes related to intestinal health, was a significantly increased for il-1β in the 2% GBA treatment, and for the apn in the 3% GBA treatment. Nonetheless, hsp70 ..

Trophic ecology of Mexican Pacific harbor seal colonies using carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes

There is limited information that provides a comprehensive understanding of the trophic ecology of Mexican Pacific harbor seal (Phoca vitulina richardii) colonies. While scat analysis has been used to determine the diet of some colonies, the integrative characterization of its feeding habits on broader temporal and spatial scales remains limited. We examined potential feeding grounds, trophic niche width, and overlap, and inferred the degree of dietary specialization using stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) in this subspecies. We analyzed δ13C and δ15N on fur samples from pups collected at five sites along the western coast of the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico. Fur of natal coat of Pacific harbor seal pups begins to grow during the seventh month in utero until the last stage of gestation. Therefore pup fur is a good proxy for the mother's feeding habits in winter (∼December to March), based on the timing of gestation for the subspecies in this region. Our results indicated that the δ13C and δ15N values differed significantly among sampling sites, with the highest mean δ15N value occurring at the southernmost site, reflecting a well-characterized north to south latitudinal 15N-enrichment in the food web. The tendency identified in δ13C values, in which the northern colonies showed the most enriched values, suggests nearshore and benthic-demersal feeding habits. A low variance in δ13C and δ15N values for each colony (<1‰) and relatively small standard ellipse areas suggest a specialized foraging behavior in adult female Pacific harbor seals in Mexican waters.

In this work, carbon nanotubes doped with Nitrogen were synthesized, seeking to modify the proportion of nitrogen species present in the nanotubes. The main purpose was to find those doping species with better catalytic activity for the triiodide reduction reaction (I_3^-) to iodide (3I^-). This reaction is very important in dye sensitized solar cells(DSSCs), as main function of the counter electrode. Subsequently, the processing of the carbon nanotubes doped with Nitrogen was performed to incorporate them into a water based ink, using a polymer (chitosan) as the binder agent. Finally, the raw samples obtained and their ink version were analyzed by cyclic voltammetry to know their catalytic activity, and then to see their usefulness as potential material in counter-electrodes of DSSCs

The human brain plays a very important role in the human body. In fact, this complex organ can be seen as “the controller” of the human body because this organ governs the nervous system. One of the key components in the brain are the neurons. The main function of the neurons is to receive, to process, and to transmit information either via chemical synapses or via electrical synapses. Depending on the type of activity to be performed, the neurons may exhibit different dynamic behaviors like for example spiking, bursting, chaotic bursting, among others. In order to study the neuronal behavior, in a non-invasive manner, the scientist have developed several mathematical models, which allow reproducing most of the neuronal behaviors or at least to reproduce the wave forms obtained from “In-vivo” e “In-vitro” measurements. Also, these models allow studying the onset of collective behavior and synchronization in groups of neurons. This thesis aims to contribute to the study of neurons from a Dynamics and Control perspective. In particular, the thesis presents an analytic, numeric, and experimental study related to the Izhikevich neuronal model. As a first step, a modified version of the Izhikevich model is presented. The modification consists in replacing the static reset function in the original model by a dynamic reset. With the proposed modification, the system can be modelled as a hybrid system with two operating modes. Furthermore, this modification allows implementing the model with electronic circuits, i.e. the modified model is used in order to design and to construct an electronic neuron, which can reproduce most of the dynamic behaviors observed in the original Izhikevich model. Finally, the onset of synchronization in a pair and in a network of modified Izhikevich neurons is investigated. In the analysis, we use the Lyapunov stability theory and the Master Stability Function approach

The performance of a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber will be analyzed when a uniform twist or a lateral compression is applied, comparing the results obtained with the reported in the scientific literature. The comparison between the results obtained in the laboratory and those predicted for standard fibers help to seek an analogy in performance between conventional fibers and HC-PCFs. Based on this analysis, we propose a design for a polarization controller made from hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. The objective to reach is to suggest a polarization controller that allows us to cover an ample amount of output states of polarization with an arbitrary input polarization

A. pelagicus, C. falciformis, C. leucas, C. limbatus, I. oxyrinchus, M. henlei, N. velox, R. longurio, S. lewini...Sharks are a group of species vulnerable to overfishing, as they generally have relatively slow growth, mature at advanced ages, have low numbers of young per litter, and low natural mortality. The systematic exploitation of sharks in the Gulf of California (GC) is occurring since 100 years ago. Just as GC is considered essential habitat for the diversity and assembly of shark species, residents and migrants. This gulf is one of the seven marine regions of the world where neritic and pelagic sharks are one of the most threatened. Therefore, knowing and characterizing the fishing areas where the most diversity and richness of shark species caught in the GC occurs can contribute to the strengthening of the legal instruments for its fishing management with a spatial character and the conservation of its habitat. The aim of this study is 1) to identify the priority sharks species and 2) potentially strategic regions for the conservation and sustainable management of the artisanal fisheries of the GC. Also, investigate the relationship of densities by species with physical-environmental conditions. These characteristics can determine the distribution and occurrence of sharks in the GC. Information contained in the official landings from 2007 to 2017 was used, which included the volume of catch by species, the price on the local market and catch sites. Based on three criteria that correspond to the vulnerability of the species due to fishing, their historical importance and economic value, the shark species that are considered priorities for their conservation and management of their fishery were selected. Twelve fishing regions are identifying as Fishing Operation Regions (ROP) using a Geographic Information System, the main ROPs of the priority species are identified. Through Generalized Additive Models (GAM), the relationship of the catch density of each species with the physical-environmental conditions, such as sea surface temperature, bathymetry, the slope between isobath and the type of substrate, was assessed between ROPs. The results shown that the priority species are A. pelagicus, C. falciformis, C. leucas, C. limbatus, I. oxyrinchus, M. henlei, N. velox, R. longurio, S. lewini, S. zygaena and S. californica. ROP 1 and 7, respectively south and north of the GC, present greater diversity since up to 10 of 11 priority shark species are catch there. The highest catch of these species occurs in ROP 1 and 12, south of the GC, so that they can be..

The use of nanometric structures in the biomedical field has strongly increased in the last years. Among them, the protein-based nanoparticles from virus or virus-like particles (VLP’s) have been widely used as nanocarriers for cell delivery of DNA, RNA, drugs and proteins. Breast cancer is an illness with high social impact that can be treated with nanometric systems. Since 1980, tamoxifen is the major drug for the breast cancer treatment, however, its efficiency is reduced by the low concentration of activating enzymes in the tumor tissue. These enzymes mainly belong to the cytochrome P450 family (CYP). Thus, the design and characterization of delivery systems based on VLP`s containing CYP activity, as enzymatic nanoreactors, to increase the activation efficiency of prodrugs for cancer treatment is proposed. In this work the expression and purification of CYPBM3 using NADPH as source of electrons for the oxidation of prodrugs such as tamoxifen has been carried out, in order to design a nanoreactor with potential biomedical applications
