The prey-predator relationship corresponds to a natural dynamic system with many variables. Among the most cited is the Lotka-Volterra model. In this thesis work, some modifications of this model are used to build algorithms by means of finite state machines, in order to reproduce this natural behavior in a group of low-cost mobile robots. The main objective is to observe the effect of the displacement of individuals on the behavior of populations by adding instraspecific competition to the interaction rules, and confirm the presence of chaos. The implementation and efficacy of the proposed algorithms are tested by using V-REP and MATLAB simulation software

The Los Tuxtlas Volcanic Field (LTVF), located on the coastal plains of the Gulf of Mexico in southern Veracruz State, México, is made up of four volcanic edifices of mostly alkaline composition: San Martín Tuxtla (SMT), San Martín Pajapan (SMP), Santa Marta (SM) and the Cerro El Vigía (CEV), in addition to numerous cinder cones and maars. Dating of the volcanic rocks of this field has allowed to infer that the volcanic activity in this region began nearly 7 Ma. The last eruption being that of the SMT volcano in 1793. To the north, the LTVF is bounded by the Gulf of México, to the east by the Salina del Istmo Basin and to the west and south by the Veracruz Basin. The latter has been classified as a foreland basin in which sedimentary sequences from Jurassic to Quaternary were deposited. We inferred the crustal structure in this region from the inverse modelling of gravity and aeromagnetic data. The obtained density model suggests that the sedimentary basins that surround the volcanic field reach a depth of at least 8 km in their deepest zones, as well as anomalous bodies (~2.76 3 ⁄ ) underlying the central and eastern zones of the LTVF. The obtained magnetic model shows the presence of a high magnetic susceptibility (0.023 to 0.1 SI) and voluminous structure that extends up to between 10 and 15 km in depth beneath SM and SMP volcanoes, in addition to an elongated one aligned with the NW-SE fracture zone in central LTVF, this suggests the presence of fissure volcanism associated with the linear cinder cone distribution in the area. In the western part of the field, we found structures with lower magnetic susceptibilities (0.023 to 0.05 SI) and less voluminous in comparison to the eastern bodies; a sphere-like body underlying the CEV volcano, as well as a shallow, flattened region to the northwest of the CEV, where topography shows very few prominent features. Highlights the absence of intensely magnetized bodies beneath SMT volcano and the numerous volcanic formations situated on its slopes

En A. helenensis en la fase estacionaria se incrementó el contenido de proteínas en irradiancias de 50 y 150 µmol m–2 s–1, mientras que el contenido de carbohidratos aumentó en la irradiancia de 100 µmol m–2 s–1 en la fase exponencial y el contenido de lípidosIn microalgae, the alteration of environmental factors such as irradiance influences the photosynthesis process, modify the growth and metabolism of cells and changes the biochemical composition. this research had the objective of evaluating the effect of irradiance on the growth and biochemical composition of the diatoms Nitzschia thermalis f. curta and Amphora helenensis. Monospecific cultures of each diatom species were maintained in triplicate withijn five irradiance levels (50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 µmol m–2 s–1). During the exponential and stationary growth phase, the biochemical composition was evaluated through spectrophotometric methods, photosynthetic activity by fluorescence of chlorophyll, and fatty acid composition by gas chromatography. In N. thermalis f. curta, the higher irradiances levels increased the growth rate and, in the exponential phase, the organic weight increase. For N. thermalis f. curta the irradiance of 200 μmol m-2 s-1 produced the highest protein contents in the stationary growth phase, while carbohydrates and lipids contents were higher at the exponential growth phase. The chlorophyll a and c contents of N. thermalis f. curta increased in the low irradiances in the stationary growth phase, while the carotene content increased with the high irradiances in the stationary growth phase. For N. thermalis f. curta the highest photosynthetic efficiency (α) values were in the in 50 µmol m– 2 s– 1, for light saturation index (Ik) in 250 µmol m– 2 s– 1, and for maximum electron transport rate (ETRmax) in 200 and 250 µmol m– 2 s– 1. In polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) for N. thermalis f. curta the most abundant fatty acid was ecoicasapentaenoic acid (EPA), which increased its content in the stationary growth phase; however, no differences were obtained due to the effect of irradiance. For A. helenensis, the low irradiance values increased the cell density and the growth rate; however, the organic dry weight did not change due to the irradiance level used, but it did increase in the stationary growth phase. In A. helenensis, at the stationary growth phase produced an increase in proteins content at 50 and 150 µmol m –2 s –1; while carbohydrates content increased at 100 µmol m – 2 s – 1 at exponential growth phase, and the lipids content increased at irradiance levels of 150 µmol m -2 s-1 in the exponential growth phase. For A. helenensis, the content of chlorophyll a and carotenes increased at low irradiances in the stationary gro

This type of sleep is obligatory in Cetaceans and facultative in some Pinnipeds and other groups of organisms. Regarding unihemispheric sleep in these species, the physiological functioning and differences with bihemispheric sleep are known, however, there are questions about its origin, evolution and genetic basis. The objective of this study was to identify unihemispheric sleep regulatory genes in Cetaceans and Pinnipeds using comparative genomics. The orthologous genes related to sleep processes and shared between these two groups of organisms were identified, a reconciliation of the tree of genes related to sleep and species tree of Cetaceans and Pinnipeds was carried out to identify those related to unihemispheric sleep. The selection rate of these genes in key branches of the evolutionary tree was evaluated and their ancestral sequence was inferred at different points in evolutionary history. The reconciliation of gene trees with the species tree showed that the possible unihemispheric sleep regulatory genes are CASP1 in Cetaceans and PER3 in Cetaceans and Otharids. CASP1 was only observed in Cetaceans and due to its function in the metabolic pathway of the NREM cycles, these species require a greater influence of this gene to regulate these cycles. For PER3 there is a selection pattern that benefits homozygosity in Pinnipeds. Therefore, it is possible that the selection that acts on this gene has conferred adaptation to the first Pinnipeds and Otharids to be able to stay in NREM sleep. The ancestral gene reconstruction of CASP1 revealed derived amino acid substitutions in Cetaceans inherited from their last common ancestor. Likewise, derived amino acid substitutions were identified in Pinniped PER3 and 7 aminoacid deletions in Phocids. These results suggest that PER3 is a gene that influences unihemispheric sleep in Cetaceans and Otharids and that CASP1 is possibly responsible for the fact that Cetaceans present obligatory unihemispheric sleep. Future studies focused on these proteins could allow to demonstrate the structural characteristics that these similarities and differences confer on them in unihemispheric sleep, as well as the different adaptive advantages that these proteins could give them and if there is a molecular evolutionary convergence

This thesis studied self-supported NiMoS catalysts and the effect of including tungsten by different routes to obtain trimetallic catalysts. NiMoS catalysts were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis to produce cubes of nanometer sizes. The inclusion of W was carried out by employing two methodologies. In one method, W was added during hydrothermal synthesis where W was included inside the structure. For the other method, W was included by impregnation. Weight percentages used of W in both methodologies are: 1%, 2% and 3%. The diffraction patterns resulting of materials showed the presence of the following phases: NiS1.97 (~NiS2), Mo2S3, MoS2, bimetallic phase like Ni2.5Mo6S6.7, and others. However, these diffraction patterns didn’t demonstrate any peak indicating W presence. Besides, with the Scanning Electron Microscopy was verified the formation of nanocubes in all NiMoWS, existing a relationship between amount of tungsten and nanocubes’ size. In addition, N2 Physisorption demonstrated that nanocubes’ surface area was very small, between 3 and 9 m2 · g-1. The presence of tungsten, regarding if tungsten is inside or outside of structure, affects the reducibility of materials, that is to say, the reducibility decrease. It was seen with temperature programmed of reduction. Furthermore, in the catalytic activity, all materials were active and selective in 3-methyltiophene hydrodesulfurization, having a trend higher than 90% toward direct desulfurization. The best catalyst was nC-1-H, that was synthesized by hydrothermal method with 1% wt. W

Advances in technology have enabled developing countries to place nanosatellites in orbit. Since controlling the displacement and orientation of these vehicles is crucial for mission accomplishment, several cost-effective techniques have been developed in response to meet the volume and power requirements using several gyroscopes that must be operated in a coordinated manner to achieve good system performance. The use of a robust synchronization strategy is therefore of great importance. Gyroscopes are not only useful for measuring the orientation of a vehicle or object but are also capable of steering it to a wanted point and are not very sensitive to external disturbances. In this work, several types of synchronizing algorithms are presented: static, dynamic coupling, as well as an observation and robust synchronization algorithm, and their applications in different gyroscope models (rotating disk, reaction wheel and moment-controlling gyroscope). The analytical results obtained are illustrated by numerical simulations. It was found that dynamic coupling is not superior to static coupling in terms of robustness, and the robust synchronization algorithm proved to be superior to all others

This study assessed the cell carbon content and biomass for genera of dinoflagellates and diatoms in the oceanic ecosystem of the Southern Gulf of Mexico. Carbon content estimates were based on biovolume calculations derived from linear dimension measurements of individual cells and the approximate geometric body shape of each genus. Then, biomass assessments were performed for both groups in two gulf regions (Perdido and Coatzacoalcos) using these carbon content factors and cell abundances. After four seasonal cruises, 11,817 cells of dinoflagellates and 3,412 cells of diatoms were analyzed. Diverse body shapes and cell sizes were observed among 46 dinoflagellate genera and 37 diatom genera. Nano-cells of dinoflagellates (68% <20 μm) and micro-cells of diatoms (77% 20–200 μm, mostly 50–75 μm) were predominant. According to this cell-size structure, on average, diatoms contained 40% more carbon per cell than dinoflagellates. Contrasting carbon content estimates were observed within the genera of both microalgae. Large carbon averages (>10,000 pg C cell-1) were attributed to Gonyaulacal and some occasional genera of dinoflagellates (e.g., Pyrocystis and Noctiluca) and centric diatoms. In contrast, values up to 3 orders of magnitude lower were found for Peridinial and Gymnodinial dinoflagellates and pennate diatoms. Based on these carbon content estimates, which can be considered representative for most of this oceanic ecosystem, seasonal and regional differences were found in the biomass assessments conducted for these functional groups. Overall, dinoflagellates (mostly low-carbon Gymnodinales) had larger depth-integrated biomass than diatoms (mainly rich-carbon centric forms) within the euphotic zone. An exception to it was the late-summer cruise at the Coatzacoalcos region when a surface bloom of centric diatoms was observed in stations influenced by river runoff. This work contributes useful reference information for future ecological studies and models for understanding the biogeochemical functioning of this open-ocean ecosystem. The vertical thermohaline structure and velocity field associated with the Campeche cyclone (CCE) was studied from glider data obtained in three different missions: mission 10 (M010, spring), mission 13 (M013, fall), and mission 17 (M017, spring). In addition, satellite altimetry data a d an eddies detection algoritm were used to study the surface variability of the position, size, and intensity of the CCE. The altimetry data indicated that CCE presents seasonal variability, being more frequent in autumn, and less frequent in summer. On the other hand, with the temperature and salinity data obtained with the gliders, we calculated the conservative temperature (Θ) and absolute salinity (SA). The observations showed that the vertical thermohaline distribution associated with the CCE was different in each mission. The minimum anomaly of Θ was -7.87 ◦C at ∼ 157 m depth, and the minimum anomaly of SA was -0.86 gkg−1 at ∼ 193 m, both minimum anomalies were observed in M010. On the other hand, the maximum value of geostrophic velocity (Ug) was 1.02 m/s at ∼ 31 m in M013. In general, the absolute maxima of anomalies of Θ, SA, and Ug in M010 were found ∼ 100 m shallower than in M013 and M017. We analyzed the water masses present in the CCE during each mission, using profiles of Θ and SA. At M010, we observed Caribbean Surface Water remnant (CSW) and Gulf Common Water (GCW) up to 150 m. While in M013 the CCE presented CSW, and around 200 m we found Subtropical Subsurface Water of the North Atlantic (NASUW). On the other hand, the CCE of M017 presented NASUW remnant, a precursor to GCW. These results suggested that we investigate the possible origin of each sampled CCE, therefore, framing the altimetry and glider data, two different vertical thermohaline structures of the CCE were identified: (i) CCE of local origin with western water masses (GCW), and (ii) CCE of remote origin, with water masses of the east of the gulf (NASUW). The CCE of remote origin was due to the arrival of a frontal eddy of the Loop Current (LCFE) and its interaction with other cyclones present in the Bay of Campeche (BC). To date, the arrival of an LCFE to the BC has not been reported, and how this could influence the thermohaline vertical structure of the CCE, thus highlighting the possible contribution of the LCFEs in the distribution of heat and salt in the southwest of the Gulf of Mexico

Reframing the magnetotelluric phase tensor for monitoring purposes: application to the Cerro Prieto geothermal field

    No full text
The magnetotelluric method is increasingly being used to monitor electrical resistivity changes in the subsurface. One of the preferred parameters derived from the surface impedance is the strike direction, which is very sensitive to changes in the direction of the subsurface electrical current flow. The preferred method for estimating the strike changes is that provided by the phase tensor because it is immune to galvanic distortions. However, it is also a fact that the associated analytic formula is unstable for noisy data, something that limits its applicability for monitoring purposes, because in general, this involves a comparison of two or more very similar data sets. One of the issues is that the noise provokes dispersion of the distribution of estimates between the four quadrants. This can be handled by limiting all values to the same quadrant by adding or subtracting the appropriate amount. This is justified by showing that the analytic formula is also a least squares solution. This is equivalent to define penalty functions for the matrix of eigenvalues and then select the minima numerically. Contrary to the analytic formula, the numerical approach can be generalized to compute strikes using windows of any number of periods, thus providing tradeoffs between variance and resolution. The performance of the proposed approach is illustrated by its application to synthetic data and to real data from a monitoring array in the Mexicali Valley, México

In the area of Ejido Uruapan, located in the municipality of Ensenada, Baja California, there have been reported thermal springs with surface temperatures that vary between 40 ° and 60 ° C, which is why it is considered an area with geothermal potential. As the first stage of the geothermal exploration program, it was decided to carry out a survey of geophysical data, with 8 profiles of Direct Current (DC) and Induced Polarization (IP), 7 audio magnetotelluric soundings (AMT), and 4 Electromagnetic Transit ( TEM). The DC and IP profiles have a length of 450 m; the arrangements used were Dipole-Dipole (DD), Wenner (WN), and Schlumberger (SC) with an electrode separation of 10 m. The audio agnetotelluric soundings were carried out with 50 m electric dipoles, and the signals were recorded in a frequency range from 10 Hz to 100 kHz. TEM soundings were acquired using a central loop configuration with an effective area of 30 x 30 m2 for the Tx and 100 x 100 m2 for the Rx. First, the 3D inversion of the DC data was performed, as well as the 2D inversion of the IP data. Afterward, the 1D inversion of the TEM data was applied. The inverse models obtained from the TEM data were taken as the basis for performing the static shift correction of the AMT data. Subsequently, the 1D inversion of the corrected AMT data was carried out using the Occam and Marquardt techniques. Lastly, the 3D inversion of the corrected AMT data was performed. Prior to the interpretation, the sensitivity analysis of the parameters of the inverse models obtained was shown. Finally, the inverse models were correlated with the geological information of the study area. In this way, it was concluded that the study area shows characteristic features associated with the elements of a geothermal system, such as the presence of conductive structures related to zones of hydrothermal alteration, zones of intermediate resistivities that could be correlated with the geothermal reservoir, and high resistivity structures that are associated with the basement. In addition, it was identified that the geological structures that control the movement of geothermal fluids are in Ejido Uruapan which are associated with the Agua Blanca fault system
