    DiffQN: Differentiable Quasi-Newton Method for Elastodynamics

    We propose DiffQN, an efficient differentiable quasi-Newton method for elastodynamics simulation, addressing the challenges of high computational cost and limited material generality in existing differentiable physics frameworks. Our approach employs a per-frame initial Hessian approximation and selectively delays Hessian updates, resulting in improved convergence and faster forward simulation compared to prior methods such as DiffPD. During backpropagation, we further reduce gradient evaluation costs by reusing prefactorized linear system solvers from the forward pass. Unlike previous approaches, our method supports a wide range of hyperelastic materials without restrictions on material energy functions, enabling the simulation of more general physical phenomena. To efficiently handle high-resolution systems with large degrees of freedom, we introduce a subspace optimization strategy that projects both forward simulation and backpropagation into a low-dimensional subspace, significantly improving computational and memory efficiency. Our subspace method can provide effective initial guesses for subsequent full-space optimization. We validate our framework on diverse applications, including system identification, initial state optimization, and facial animation, demonstrating robust performance and achieving up to 1.8× to 18.9× speedup over state-of-the-art methods.Pacific Graphics Conference Papers, Posters, and DemosPhysical Simulatio

    Coupling Guidance and Progressiveness in Visual Analytics

    Data size and complexity in Visual Analytics (VA) pose significant challenges for VA systems and VA users. Two recent developments address these challenges: progressive VA (PVA) and guidance for VA (GVA). Both share the goal of supporting the analysis flow. PVA primarily considers the system perspective and incrementally generates partial results during long computations to avoid an unresponsive VA system. GVA is primarily concerned with the user perspective and strives to mitigate knowledge gaps during VA activities to prevent the analysis from stalling. Although PVA and GVA share the same goal, it has not yet been studied how PVA and GVA can join forces to achieve it. Our paper investigates this in detail. We structure our research around two questions: How can guidance enhance PVA and how can progressiveness enhance GVA? This leads to two main themes: Guidance for Progressiveness (G4P) and Progressiveness for Guidance (P4G). By exploring both themes, we arrive at a conceptual model of how progressiveness and guidance can work together.     PerceptualLift: Using hatches to infer a 3D organic shape from a sketch

    In this work, we investigate whether artistic hatching, popular in pen-and-ink sketches, can be consistently perceived as a depth cue. We illustrate our results by presenting PerceptualLift, a modeling system that exploits hatching to create curved 3D shapes from a single sketch. We first describe a perceptual user study conducted across a diverse group of participants, which confirms the relevance of hatches as consistent clues for inferring curvature in the depth direction from a sketch. It enables us to extract geometrical rules that link 2D hatch characteristics, such as their direction, frequency, and magnitude, to the changes of depth in the depicted 3D shape.     3D Gabor Splatting: Reconstruction of High-frequnecy Surface Texture using Gabor Noise

    3D Gaussian splatting has experienced explosive popularity in the past few years in the field of novel view synthesis. The lightweight and differentiable representation of the radiance field using the Gaussian enables rapid and high-quality reconstruction and fast rendering. However, reconstructing objects with high-frequency surface textures (e.g., fine stripes) requires many skinny Gaussian kernels because each Gaussian represents only one color if viewed from one direction. Thus, reconstructing the stripes pattern, for example, requires Gaussians for at least the number of stripes. We present 3D Gabor splatting, which augments the Gaussian kernel to represent spatially high-frequency signals using Gabor noise. The Gabor kernel is a combination of a Gaussian term and spatially fluctuating wave functions, making it suitable for representing spatial high-frequency texture. We demonstrate that our 3D Gabor splatting can reconstruct various high-frequency textures on the objects.Eurographics 2025 - Short PapersShort Paper

    Order independent transparency (OIT) is a technique in computer graphics that allows for accurate rendering of transparent objects without the need to sort them in a specific order based on their depth. Traditional transparency methods often suffer from artifacts and inaccuracies due to this sorting process, especially in complex scenes with many overlapping transparent surfaces. OIT is important because it provides a more visually correct representation of transparent materials, ensuring that colors mix accurately and that all elements are rendered consistently, regardless of their draw order. This enhances realism in applications such as video games, simulations, and visual effects in films.     Building Height Assessment for Heritage Site's Surroundings using 3D-GIS Multiple Scenarios

    A heritage property associated with a wider setting of natural landscape necessitates specific approach to safeguarding the values and integrity it carries. This study proposed conservation and management practices to look into height intrusion that may have had an adverse visual impact on a heritage site's surroundings both in the immediate vicinity and the extend beyond to its wider setting. A heritage site - Suan Dok Temple in Chiang Mai city, Thailand, was selected as a case study using the Viewshed analysis to investigate visibility of the temple with two distinct heights of stupas: Suan Dok height and Average height, as well as its associated mountain landscape as a result of building height impact in the adjacent, close, and mountain view zones. And later to comparing scenarios created by Computer Generative Architecture (CGA) to estimate optimal or critical building height for each view zone. The results indicated that, in the adjacent zone, the most critical building height range is less than 15 and 9 meters, respectively. Further from the heritage site, in the close zone, the critical building height range is less than 21 and 15 meters, respectively. The mountain backdrop naturally exhibits a direct variation based on the height of the taller buildings, necessitating further discussion of the optimal or critical height. The building height scenario presented in this study demonstrates the potential of employing 3D GIS through the rule package in CGA to assess the height of buildings within the heritage site's surrounding area. This approach presents an opportunity to evaluate the building height regulations in the context of urban planning and design, particularly regarding the preservation of the heritage's visual integrity.Digital HeritageAnalysing and Documenting Sites and Landscape

    High-Fidelity Texture Transfer Using Multi-Scale Depth-Aware Diffusion

    Textures are a key component of 3D assets. Transferring textures from one shape to another, without user interaction or additional semantic guidance, is a classical yet challenging problem. It can enhance the diversity of existing shape collections, augmenting their application scope. This paper proposes an innovative 3D texture transfer framework that leverages the generative power of pre-trained diffusion models. While diffusion models have achieved significant success in 2D image generation, their application to 3D domains faces great challenges in preserving coherence across different viewpoints. Addressing this issue, we designed a multi-scale generation framework to optimize the UV maps coarse-to-fine. To ensure multi-view consistency, we use depth info as geometric guidance; meanwhile, a novel consistency loss is proposed to further constrain the color coherence and reduce artifacts. Experimental results demonstrate that our multi-scale framework not only produces high-quality texture transfer results but also excels in handling complex shapes while preserving correct semantic correspondences.     The Illuminated Manuscripts pilot project: a hub dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of ancient codices, integrated into the DigiLab-IT platform

    The ''Illuminated Manuscripts Hub'' provides innovative digital services, tools, and VR environments aiming to increase the knowledge of handwritten and decorated ancient codices. A new cross-disciplinary approach is introduced in the study, digital representation, and knowledge transmission of these complex artefacts, going beyond the traditional 2D digitisation and digital catalogues. Manuscripts are presented in their tangible and intangible aspects, including invisible features hidden beneath the surface. A knowledge graph, as well as 2D representations,3D and 4D virtual models integrate and contextualise information related to decorative apparatus, text and writing, structure, execution techniques, materials, state of conservation. These contents adopt standard formats and frameworks such as IIIF and GLTF, and the collections are accessible through the DigiLab-IT, aiming to be the digital access platform to the Italian node of the European Infrastructure for Heritage Science (E-RIHS), financed by the PNRR H2IOSC project (Humanities and Cultural Heritage Italian Open Science Cloud). The ''Illuminated Manuscripts Hub'' is addressed to the research community and integrates widespread open-source frameworks supporting interoperable formats and providing specialised players and tools, such as Mirador and ATON.
