The Moral Careers of Male Tinder Users: An Exploratory Sociological Analysis

Men’s experiences and behaviors on dating apps are shaped by the gender distribution asymmetry on these platforms, usage patterns and results, motivations of use, and perceived benefits. This study contributes to the understanding of the outcomes of men’s use of dating apps, by identifying the social trajectories of use observed on Tinder. For this purpose, I use the concept of ‘career’, as discussed by Erving Goffman (1963), Howard Becker (1963), and David Matza (1969), to answer the following research question: What are the ‘moral careers’ of male users, and what are the factors that influence their engagement on the Tinder dating app? The study relies on 25 semi-structured interviews with 22 self-identified heterosexual and three self-identified homosexual male users, held between 2019 and 2022, and a sample of 22 online accounts of Tinder use, published on Quora. The analysis shows the emergence of five ‘moral careers’: the serial dater, the relationship-oriented dater, the passive dater, the episodic dater, and the discredited dater, with associated narratives. The findings contribute to the understanding of the dating practices and effects stirred by dating apps, with a focus on Tinder. It also illuminates specific masculine behaviors and goals within the app, with an accent on their dynamics

Vigneta fertilității familiei. Studiu de caz: arborele decizional privind fertilitatea

This paper aims to provide an interdisciplinary approach to fertility analysis. The main objective is the use of a psychotherapeutic tool in fertility decision analysis. We used the genogram, a tool frequently utilized in systemic psychotherapy. By borrowing and using the genogram in the context of fertility decision analysis, it facilitates our understanding of the fertility decision in terms of individual and family factors, as well as cultural, economic and social factors. This article aims to study fertility decision as a process resulting from the overlapping of several determinants. Thus fertility decisions appear as the result of a biological process influenced by social factors, conditioned by cultural norms and subject to intra-familial laws that seem to determine both structurally and functionally individual decisions to have children. The assessment of all these factors influencing family fertility decision-making can also be analysed intergenerationally with the help of the genogram. The introduction of the genogram as a tool for analysing the different forces determining fertility and fertility decisions may overcame some of the challenges of measuring the influence of different functional and structural aspects of the family, which may technically hamper the scientific approach, given the changes to which the family as a system has been subjected in recent years

After Arbeitsschutzkontrollgesetz. Strikes and Organic Intellectuals in the German Meat Industry

For decades, migrant workers with temporary and service contract work in the German meat industry have rarely been recruited by trade unions. The Arbeitsschutzkontrollgesetz (“Occupational Safety and Health Inspection Act”) law implemented in 2021 aimed to grant equal employment conditions to the majority of the workers in slaughterhouses, creating new avenues for trade unions to gain more members and organize industry-level negotiations for better wages and a collective agreement. This article explores the lessons we can draw from the series of strikes that accompanied the negotiations. By relying primarily on participant observation in the meat industry strikes and employing an actor-centred perspective on industrial relations, the paper reveals the role of shop-floor organic intellectuals in mobilizing and demobilizing workers. The analysis of the strikes shows that organic intellectuals can be instrumental in articulating the resistance of subaltern groups, but they can also be co-opted by dominant groups to manufacture consent

On the Possibility of a Conceptual Model of Quality of Life

Up to now, quality of life (QOL) research has been guided by several conceptual frameworks that allow for the generation of rather general approaches to QOL with very fragmented explanatory contributions, while no specific conceptual models can be identified in the literature. This paper, which is based on a critical review of mainstream literature, aims to highlight the main difficulties in building a conceptual model of QOL and to propose a model that can overcome some of the current issues. The difficulties in constructing such a conceptual model stem mainly from the variety of definitions and the range assigned to the concept of QOL, the consequent operationalisation of the concept, the relativity and multidimensionality of the concept and the subsequent problems with unidimensional measures. This paper proposes a conceptual model that adopts an individual perspective on the theoretical construct and introduces several novel ideas for building a comprehensive explanatory framework for QOL. The following developments and improvements are suggested with the purpose of clarifying the intricate field of QOL research and closing in on a conceptual model: honing in on essential dimensions instead of constantly expanding the concept, increasing the effort put into theorising about QOL, adopting a life course perspective, generating longitudinal data and utilising research on agency. There is a high need for the development of a conceptual model of QOL and the concurrent integration of QOL approaches, at least at the European level, as this would contribute to fostering the advancement of the QOL research field and highlighting core European values regarding QOL standards

Sărăcia și alți factori de risc ce favorizează comportamentul violent în viața domestică

Poverty, when manifested against the background of additional potentiating factors, such as a low level of education, the presence of addictions such as alcoholism, smoking, drug use, etc., is one of the most often incriminated factors responsible for the emergence and proliferation domestic violence. The inability to satisfy certain material needs determines the frustration of the individual, frustration that generates, in turn, some violent, conflictual impulses, which disturb the balance of family life. Violent behavior generates extremely serious social problems, affecting all age groups, social status and various spheres of social life. The COVID-19 pandemic, which created the conditions for an intensification of family life by organizing work from home or increasing unemployment, has led to an increase in the phenomenon of domestic violence and especially violence against women

Modele de dezvoltare identitară în familii minoritare etnic/multiculturale de surzi

Although the existence of internal ethnic diversity within Deaf communities is recognized by several authors, there has been less analysis of the impact of the ethnicity of marriage partners on the development and transmission of identity within Deaf families. This paper addresses language use and crossgenerational identity transmission in ethnic minority or ethnically mixed families set up by Deaf spouses living in Oradea (Romania). The research conducted in the Deaf community of Oradea is based on a survey of ethnic Hungarian Deaf community members (including ethnic Romanian spouses), lifepath interviews with selected Deaf individuals, and family case studies. The research results denote that in the case of Deaf people living in ethnically homogenous marriages who have graduated from a special school in Hungarian language, the transmission of Hungarian identity, knowledge of Hungarian sign language/oral language tends to be a natural, undisturbed process. However, if one of the spouses is of Romanian ethnicity, the language of communication within the family will probably be Romanian sign language/oral language. On the other hand, in families where both minority and majority ethnic family members, Deaf and hearing, are present, complex, multifaceted patterns of linguistic communication may operate, favoring specific multicultural ways of developing and transmitting identity

Rural Romania in the new capitalism: 1990-2020. Pro Universitaria, Bucharest, 2022. Iulian Stănescu & Flavius Mihalache (editors)

Authors and coordinators Stănescu Iulian and Mihalache Flavius capture a moving picture of the Romanian village, as it was inherited after the Romanian Revolution, transforming, and reinventing itself in an interesting story of an adventure between survival and authenticity of each land. The archetype of the Romanian peasant in the 21st century is the Odyssey of a lone wolf, alienated from the unitary vision of his mission of universality and at the same time motivated to live in the strangest challenges and in an endless European modernization. The coordination of such a volume is itself an adventure in the history of the most archaic place where Romanian-ness was born as a source of immortality and a return to the origins of a people tormented by the curse of finding own solutions to a global movement that has always caught it unprepared in its historical evolution. The authors who have subscribed to this volume are not just researchers, but voices that bring that mosaic of images to a complex picture, almost complete but never exhausted
