The European Identity of Welfare and the Economic Crisis

    Get PDF
The current economic crisis has pushed the European Union member states into recession. Most affected are the new member states which adhered in 2004 and 2007. The foundation of the European identity recorded at the level of citizens' representations was built also on the consolidated system of welfare which was specific to western countries. Within the context of a post-crisis evolution, the article offers the possibility to reflect to an evaluation of the dynamics of political and technical decisions undertaken by the European institutions to support new member states for an active participation into European construction during the crisis period. From this perspective it is worthy to note that the delay in the decision making processes designed to diminish the effects of economic crisis in an integrative manner is due both to the lack of experience in the management of major critical situations within the EU -27 formula but also to a prudent and timed exercise of the new member states in terms of their fully undertaking the European identity into a welfare space defined by liberty, security and justice. The article underlined the success of positive conditionality recorded during the pre-accession period for most of the member states shall become institutionalized due to new measures adopted by European institutions and on the long run shall encourage co-participation of all member states into overcoming the crisis and to consolidate the European identity level based on welfare dimension

Social Identifications with Big Groups and Communities and Subjective Well-being in Poland

Socialties are known to have strong influence on well-being, but in the studies in this scientific context they are usually operationalized as close relationships. The author wanted to check if social identifications with very big groups and communities e.g. citizens of a province, a nation, citizens of Europe or a religious group, are also linked to happiness and life satisfaction. On the basis of big opinion polls from years 1995–2005 (Polish General Social Surveys) and another opinion poll from 2009, the connection between wide social identifications and subjective well-being was probed. Analyses confirmed the hypothesis that social  identifications with big groups or communities are connected to subjective well-being, both in  an emotional aspect, like happiness or a positive affect, as well as in a cognitive one, like satisfaction in different domains of life. The results of the first study indicate that subjects identifying themselves on low level with Poland, Europe, region, and non-believers were the least  satisfied in different domains. Also people highly identifying themselves with Poland and  Europe had stronger feeling of happiness than people with weaker identifications. The results  from the second study indicate that stronger social identifications (local, national, European  and religious) were connected with more positive affect. Also, all of them except EU identification were connected with stronger domain satisfactions. The results are discussed in relationships with the Terror Management Theory, with support potentially acquired from social  identifications and with specificity of religion prescriptions on desirable emotions

O privire critică asupra "ruinei" economice şi a "decăderii" politice a marii boierimi în prima modernitate: A Critical Approach on the Economic "ruin" and the Political "decay" of the Romanian Great Nobility during the First Modernity

The purpose of this article is to challenge Ştefan Zeletin's classical sociological thesis (regarding the economic and politic extinction of the great Wallachian boyar-class) which is not historically sustainble neither on economic, nor on political grounds. From an economic point of view, we argue that the great Wallachian boyar families expanded their areas of economic interest, between 1774 and 1866, through industrial, banking, land-leasing or commercial investments, both internally, by founding market-places and fairs, and internationally, by getting involved in the export of cereal and animal commodities. From a politic point of view, we only remind that between 1859 and 1916, forty-six percent of those who held the highest governmental dignity in the modern Romanian state – that of Prime Minister – were representatives of the twenty-three great Wallachian boyar families

How do the Romanians Experience the Process of Transnationalism? Canada and the UK Compared

    Get PDF
The rapid improvement of technologies and communication has made it easier for migrants to maintain close links with their country of origin. Given the lack of empirical investigation on transnationalism, this comparative study argues that this process can be better understood by focusing on the experience of migrants. Using a sample of 27 participants from Canada and the UK, it has been found that transnationalism can be seen in terms of materiality and emotions. Factors such as length of stay, marital status and the national institutional context play an important role in the development and sustainability of transnationalism. However, they do not prevent the process from occurring, but rather change its practice. In that respect, the participants from Canada are likely to experience material transnationalism, while the participants from the UK tend to live the process of transnationalism in an affective form

The hierarchizations consistency of the potential sources of work satisfaction: methods of achieving and assessing hierarchic orders

    Get PDF
In social life, people try to know, to build, to maintain, to change, to destroy and to avoid hierarchies. At the social level, the hierarchical systems are considered to be desirable for their capacity to increase efficiency, communication and control in the human actions, and undesirable for generating stratification of social actors, impeding participation and democracy. In this paper we focused on the consistency of the hierarchies, answering to the question of what happens when one and the same person hierarchizes the same set of objects using two different ways. We applied this in a particularly research field - the work motivation – being interested to study the consistency of the hierarchies of satisfaction sources. We used a list of 24 factors of work satisfaction and motivation that we applied to a group 56 young workers in an enterprise, asking them to fill an indirect hierarchization questionnaire in which all the factors were compared among themselves (resulting 276 diads), and a direct hierarchization, by asking the subjects to select, in order, the most important five factors for generating work satisfaction and the most important 5 factors for generating work dissatisfaction. We found that the highly trained subjects are more "coherent" than the low educated. Scalar hierarchization seems to be more natural, because more subjects are consistent in this case, compared with pairs examination. Finally, the respondents violated independence condition with the same ease as they produce Condorcet paradoxes, making us think at the cost of avoiding such paradoxical results when dealing with complex data
