The Impact of Emerging Economies in the International Political Context

    Get PDF
This article explores the impact of emerging economies in the international political arena. The arrival of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) has changed the map of the global order and the strategies to project hegemonic power. Could the BRICS eclipse the economic power of the richest countries of the world?  How could the BRICS influence a change in the social and welfare policies in some developed countries? What are the main strategies of BRICS to project its soft power worldwide? These and other questions are analysed in this text taking into account the new geopolitical scenario of the twenty-first century. The essay is presented as a result of some discussions with key leaders, journalists and academicians that observe a transformation in the economy, politics, international relations, and in the psychology of the westerners as a sort of losing confidence in the Western model faced on emerging economies. It should be pointed out that the text is a revision of the main arguments related to the consequences in short and long term of rising emerging markets for the west such as an increase in unemployment, impoverishment, inflation, financial debt, and social depression, economical and technical dependence from the emerging markets. Not to mention, the influence of BRICS in the reshaping of social and welfare policies

Spinning the European Wheel: Benefits, Welfare, and Identity Layers in the Old and New Member States

The main question addressed by this study is whether citizens from the new Member States are more likely to perceive themselves as Europeans than their counterparts in Western Europe. We employ Standard Eurobarometer survey data from 2009 to test how identity is shaped by trust in political institutions, perceptions about national economies (both current and prospective), benefits of membership, satisfaction with the direction in which the country and the EU go, and individual socio-demographic factors (gender, age, and education). Our results show that national identity continues to be prominent, and especially so in the EU15. Second, the examined determinants act in the same direction for both the national and the European sense of belonging. However, their strength differs significantly, with less influence at national level. Finally, the explanatory factors did not perform differently in the two sets of countries

Experienţa cotidiană a muncii plătite. Interviuri cu femei în zona Hunedoara: Paid work as everyday experience. Interviews with Women from Hunedoara

The access to paid work is now an intricate part of the hardcore feminist research agenda, mainly from two different perspectives: either from a moral stand that considers it a good thing for women - a construction that relies on the concept of subtle revolution (meaning that private institutions from within the family change at a slowly but steady pace towards empowering women as a result of their involvement on the labor market) - or from a different perspective, that is mainly concerned with the tensions between the performance of traditional and patriarchal roles and those associated with the actual status of women playing an active part on the labor market, the tensions between career and family life, and of the double burden of women. The main research question of my paper is: How do women perceive their involvement on the labor market and how does this specific form of participation is reflected in their everyday life? My results show the link between paid work and women’s empowerment, and also the way in which this empowerment is (re-)interpreted according to the patriarchal norms (which, in their turn, are deeply internalized by the subjects). Thus, participation in the labor market (involving remuneration) is valued both from the view of income providing and economic independence, but especially for the potential of generating a particular framework in which women could manifest themselves autonomously as individuals, professionals and citizens, directly contributing to the social welfare, not only to that of their own family. These women are simultaneously doing the housework and caring labors due to the gender roles, therefore their double labor day being assumed as a manifestation of their independence

Caracteristici ale identităţii culturale a românilor imigranţi din Anglia: Characteristics of Cultural Identity of Romanian Emigrants in England

In this study we have presented the results of a research conducted in June, July and August 2011 on the Romanian immigrants from England. The main aim of the research was to see if the Romanians are still keeping their national, social and cultural identity, even if they are living in a foreign country for more than a year. According to statistical data, over 3.5 million Romanians have migrated to other countries, especially to Western Europe, searching for a better life, for better work and living conditions. From the results of our researches we may conclude that the “uprooting drama” and the “homesickness” represent the two main feelings that Romanians experience when they are far away from their native places. In this way, we may consider that is very important to understand the cultural patrimony that they have helped them to integrate in the new societies. In the first part of our study we have defined the main concepts and we have also described the methodology of our research on the immigrants from England. The second part of the article presents the most important conclusions of the quantitative research on the Romanians who are living, studying and working in England

Competition Behind Creativity: A Southern European Perspective

Analyses of global cities and competitiveness have become dominant in urban studies debates in recent years, putting the focus on the identity of the city and the global economic processes in which it is involved. This attention has been misleading because it has taken attention away from ordinary cities and other aspects of the urban process. The analytical frame for this city renaissance can be described as a combination between the ‘hard’ laws of the new and classic urban economy with ‘soft’ elements of other, often geographical, approaches. ‘Creative City’ analyses in mainstream versions such as those of Florida regard immaterial elements as knowledge and creativity to be essential dimensions for success in post-industrial cities and can be considered the perfect synthesis of the approaches quoted above. In this paper the methodological and theoretical bases of these mainstream policies will be challenged. The case of Rome will be analysed in order to demonstrate that the Creative City narrative can be applied as a label to secondary cities, but that it fails to understand the very core of social mechanisms in a city

The Patterns of Depopulation in Timişoara – Research Note

The shrinking phenomenon represents a natural trend into the evolution of an urban community. Usually it comes together with economical decline, unemployment, house vacancy, perforation of the urban grid, local budget decreasing and so on. Timisoara has loosed around 14% of population in almost 2 decades. Can be this considerate a signal for the shrinking process? This paper is based on the partial results of the project FP7 no.225193 “ShrinkSmart – The Governance of the Shrinkage into the European Context”, financed by European Commission, Theme 8 Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities 2009-2012 (http://www.shrinksmart.ufz.de/). West University of Timisoara is partner into the consortium of this project, together with 7 other European Universities. The team from West University of Timisoara is composed from Melinda Dincă, Dan Lucheş, Delia Nadolu and Bogdan Nadolu (the coordonator
