Familia de origine - predictor al modelului familial adoptat de studenți. Studiu comparativ - zona transfrontalieră Bihor-Hajdu-Bihar: Family of Origin - a Predictive Factor of the Family Model Embraced by Students. Comparative Study in Bihor-Hajdu-Bihar Euro-Region
The present study aims to fill the research gap regarding the marital and reproductive attitudes and behaviours of students appertaining to two similar but differentiated socio-cultural areas: the Western border of Romania (Bihor county) and the Eastern border of Hungary (Hajdu-Bihar area). A secondary analysis was conducted on the data collected within HERD research among 1.323 Romanian and 1.295 Hungarian higher education students. Comparing the samples, the results showed differences and resemblances: the family background determines students’ marital and reproductive behavior for both samples but the decision to establish an own family is biased by groups, being affected by social, cultural, educational and financial factors. The fact that, opposite to the Hungarian sample, the financial stability is considered by the Romanian students to be the most important element when deciding to have a family, could be interpreted as an alarm sign for the authorities; they must create an optimum context for the proliferation of new families. Although Romanian students manifest attitudes that aim to transcend traditional norms, they are still being exposed to the influence of these values, while Hungarian students are more affected by modern social norms
The New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) in Romania. Some Empirical Findings
The present article provides an insight into Romanians’ environmental worldview, on the basis of a shortened, six item version of the New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) Scale. The data are delivered from the 2008 wave of the European Value Survey (EVS), which included, for the first time, the NEP module. The results of the analysis suggest that the overall endorsement of the NEP in Romania is one of the lowest among the EVS participant countries and Romania provides also one of the highest percents of ‘don’t know’ answers regarding the NEP items. The six items do not consistently hold together and the factor analysis yields a two factor solution, with items saturating two components: one corresponding to a ‘humans over nature’ facet and another corresponding to the ‘fragility of earth’s balance and its carrying capacity’. The comparative inter-country analysis suggests that in the case of all the other European countries, the NEP items are split into the same categories as in Romania. Thus, the major difference between Romania and the other European states consists not so much in the different structure of the NEP, but rather in the much lower endorsement of the NEP view, particularly its facets of anti-anthropocentrismand anti-human-exemptionalism such as they are currently enacted in Romania. Among the positional factors, residence in large urban settings is the most important predictor of the unequivocal endorsement of the NEP, while education is the most important factor which significantly increases the likelihood to formulate an opinion in relation with NEP items
Un model de regenerare urbană: o Uzină de Apă sau un Centru de Arhitectură, Cultură Urbană şi Peisaj? A Model for Urban Regeneration: A Water Plant or a Centre for Architecture, Urban Culture, and Landscape?
The reconversion of industrial buildings has become a common practice in urban landscapes, due to cultural changes that have occurred in post-industrial societies. However, the need to restore the space that once represented an economic path for self sustainability has generated a new demand for reuse and rehabilitation. By keeping the industrial specificity of the place and adding a new purpose, the industrial landscape is changing from an unused and degraded environment into the city’s heritage. According to the project’s initiators, the reconversion of the Water Plant is an excuse for the regeneration of the surrounding industrial space, thus reviving the city and promoting new spatial practices among its inhabitants. Therefore it has an enormous potential in reshaping the city map. The subject of this case study, the Water Plant in Suceava, has certain particular characteristics derived from its history and its geographical position. The Water Plant was build 100 years ago, during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It represented an important step towards the urbanization of the city, due to its main utility of providing drinking water to its inhabitants. Over time, other modern system of water filtration replaced the plant leaving the building without a clear purpose. Nowadays, the building has been reconverted into a Centre for Architecture, Urban Culture and Landscape, representing a step forward towards postindustrial society

Cine (mai) naşte în România? Who is (still) Giving Birth in Romania?
Our work is based on an analysis of data on all births in Romania during 2006-2010 and attempts to draw some major types of situations in which the mothers of children there are born in those previous five years. Based on information from official records made at birth, we were able to build a total of five categories of mothers, using as criteria occupation, schooling and environment (urban or rural) in which they live. Validity of the distinctions between these categories results from their relationship with other factors not included in the classification, i.e. the fact that the five classes differ after many other relevant indicators, such as extramarital birth weight, mean age at birth, state the child’ father, ethnicity and so on. The practical importance of the study is that, based on different profiles of types found, we can imagine different policies for supporting birth rates, with appropriate solutions to each of these situations. Or, on the contrary, we will prove that a single measure is not appropriate for all women or couples. We also mention that special attention must be paid to extramarital births, demonstrating one again that this phenomenon takes in Romania very different forms than in Western (especially in the Northern) countries
Tipul familiei, calitatea relației părinte–copil și efectele asupra stimei de sine, fumatului, consumului de alcool și adaptării școlare. Studiu asupra elevilor din județul Cluj: Family Type, the Parent–Child Relationship and the Effects on Self Esteem, Smoking, Alcohol Consumption and School Adjustment. Study in the Cluj County
We often discuss divorce and migration because of the social, economical or psychological effects. When children are involved the issue becomes even more sensitive. The recent theories and research underline the importance of intrafamilial processes, more than that of divorce or migration per se. The present paper focuses on the statistical connections between the family type (intact or separated because of migration or divorce), the quality of parent-child relationship as independent variables and the possible effects on children: self esteem, smoking, alcohol consumption and school adjustment as dependent variables. The responders are students in the schools of Cluj County, Romania. The results showed rather small or no effect of family type, but significant effects of the parent-child relationship on child outcome. The relationship with the mother holds the most important statistical effect on children’s self esteem, alcohol consumption and school adjustment; and I also find to be interesting that almost 25% of the responders ignored at least one of the questions regarding the relationship with their father. Parents can learn from the results the importance of a good relationship with their children, and it is also important for the policy makers to consider that the absence of a parent, regardless of the cause, holds a negative effect on children’s school grades
Oportunități și restricții ale dezvoltării rurale într-un areal dat. Notă de cercetare: Opportunities and Constraints of the Rural Development in a Certain Area. A Research Note
The measures for regional and local development are increasingly significant roles, more than the beginning with the 1990s, by the transformation processes of the system had earned more urban area than rural space. Only in the course of accession to the EU, the issue of rural area won the attention of decision-makers. Simultaneously with these adjustment processes have also occurred the porblem of global sustainable development, which are specific characteristics, at the local, community and individual level. Although the methodological speaking, addressing the issue of sustainable local development has no equivalent scientific degree of refining surveys very recent, the immediately interest to Romania is, on the one hand, the complete diagnosis of the complex dimensions of sustainable rural development, and on the other hand, the identification of the priority directions of corrective action of the economic and social disparities, existing within and between rural and urban areas. In this respect, this approach proposes, on the basis of adequate methodological justification, to identify opportunities and constraints of rural development in a rural area, consisting of four municipalities of the Argeş county, from a many criteria perspective (demography, sources of income, agricultural land use, etc.), in order to formulate the feasible alternatives for sustainable local development
Tehnici de comunicare şi PR politic în Şcoala lui Dimitrie Gusti. Carol al II-lea, „regele ţăranilor şi al tineretului”: Political PR and Communication Techniques within The School of Dimitrie Gusti. King Karl II, “The King of the Peasants and of the Youth”
When the common belief was that „everything had been said” about the Sociological School of Dimitrie Gusi (1925-1940), researcher Zoltán Rostás released his research project regarding Gusti’s School. The Monographic School was disclosed in a totally different manner from the perspective of the oral history. This study is based on the life history interviews conducted by Rostás on the Gusti’s School members in the ’80s. To answer the question to which extent did a coherent or spontaneous political communication strategy exist in the interwar period, coordinated by the sociologists hired at the Royal Foundation in the favor of King Karl II, the author also studied the press articles of those times. By using the method of representative biography, the article unveils if and how the members of Gusti’s School used the PR and communication techniques that Gusti had encountered in Germany with the purpose to build an image of a Social Monarch for King Karl II’s. The article describes the rupture produced in the mid ’30s between the group formed around Rânduiala magazine (Ernest Bernea, D. C. Amzăr) and the sociologists who remained faithful to Dimitrie Gusti at the Cultural Royal Foundation (Octavian Neamţu, Henri H. Stahl, Anton Golopenţia). The two fractions applied a series of communication techniques to build the profile of a „Savior” of the nation in the press back then. The supporters of Rânduiala built it for the Captain of the Legionary Movement, Corneliu Zelea Codreanu, and the monographists – for King Karl II
Popular music, social capital and the consolidation of public space in post-communist Romania
Creating a public space as a space of freedom, dialogue and trust, is one of the last challenges that post-communist transition in Romania faces today. This task is important because public space is merely a political space, meaning that people engaging in this space express the willingness to defend and pursue collective interests, to cooperate by the developing political resources, and to influence the political system. Although those issues are generally addressed by the means of surveys, we chose, instead, to study a widespread popular music genre called ‘manele’. Since critical discourse analysis (CDA) has successfully demonstrated that discourse is always connected with elements of various social processes, we use it here in order to fully understand ‘manele’ as a suitable vehicle carrying images and symbols to generate a particular narrative. Far from being specific to a marginal subculture, ‘manele’ are a social sign that offers compelling insights into the social world we live in. Thus, the social environment unveiled by ‘manele’ proves to be dominated by distrust, apathy and disengagement. The gloomy social environment labeled by ‘manele’ as a ‘mean world’, dominated by deep social distrust and uncertainty, largely encourages specific defensive reactions, as pervasive corruption, free-riding, social intolerance and violence, in a postcommunist society making efforts to rebuild social ties and to consolidate democracy following decades of totalitarian rule
