Non-resonant global mode in LHD partial collapse with net toroidal current

    Get PDF
0000-0002-7698-0223A transition from an interchange mode to a non-resonant mode is found in the nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic simulation for the partial collapse in a large helical device (LHD) plasma with a net toroidal current. This transition can occur when the magnetic shear is weak and the rotational transform is close to unity in the core region. In this transition, the mode number of the dominant Fourier component is reduced. As a result of the nonlinear evolution, the (m, n) = (1, 1) component can be dominant, where m and n are the poloidal and the toroidal mode numbers, respectively. This transition is considered to be a candidate to explain the observation in the LHD experiments with the net toroidal current that show partial collapses are caused by the (1, 1) mode.journal articl

Preliminary Cryogenic Layering by the Infrared Heating Method Modified with Cone Temperature Control for the Polystyrene Shell FIREX Target

    Get PDF
0000-0001-8343-491XThe infrared (IR) heating method for a central ignition target with spherical symmetry is modified for the axisymmetric Fast Ignition Realization EXperiment (FIREX) target. The challenge is that the FIREX target pretends to be a thermally spherical shell. Our previous simulation studies (A. Iwamoto et al., Fusion Sci. Technol. 56, 427 (2009), A. Iwamoto et al., J. Phys.: Conf. Ser. 244, 032039 (2010)) have shown that the combination of volumetric heating in a fuel and cone temperature control has the potential to finish a uniform fuel layer. We have developed the IR heating system, dedicated to the FIREX target, with exclusive cone temperature control. The ability of solid fuel layering was examined by using an 826 µm polystyrene (PS) shell with a gold cone of 1.2 mm in length instead of the 500 µm FIREX target for easy observation. The system could control the profile of a solid fuel layer in the PS shell target. Eventually, the solid layer with the best sphericity of 92% was formed, and the RMS roughness of the inner surface was 44 - 49 µm in modes 1 to 100 and 14 - 26 µm in modes 5 to 100.journal articl

Visualization of Fast Ion Phase-Space Flow Driven by Alfvén Instabilities

    Get PDF
0000-0001-6127-2825Fast ion phase-space flow, driven by Alfvén eigenmodes (AEs), is measured by an imaging neutral particle analyzer in the DIII-D tokamak. The flow firstly appears near the minimum safety factor at the injection energy of neutral beams, and then moves radially inward and outward by gaining and losing energy, respectively. The flow trajectories in phase space align well with the intersection lines of the constant magnetic moment surfaces and constant E−(ω/n)Pζ surfaces, where E, Pζ are the energy and canonical toroidal momentum of ions; ω and n are angular frequencies and toroidal mode numbers of AEs. It is found that the flow is so destructive that the thermalization of fast ions is no longer observed in regions of strong interaction. The measured phase-space flow is consistent with nonlinear hybrid kinetic-magnetohydrodynamics simulation. Calculations of the relatively narrow phase-space islands reveal that fast ions must transition between different flow trajectories to experience large-scale phase-space transport.journal articl

Two-fluid and finite Larmor radius effects on high-beta tokamak equilibria with flow in reduced magnetohydrodynamics

    Get PDF
0000-0001-8999-1784High-beta tokamak equilibria with flow comparable to the poloidal Alfvén velocity in the reduced magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model with two-fluid and ion finite Larmor radius (FLR) effects are investigated. The reduced form of Grad-Shafranov equation for equilibrium with flow, two-fluid and FLR effects is analytically solved for simple profiles. The dependence of the Shafranov shift for the magnetic axis and the equilibrium limits on the poloidal beta and the poloidal Alfvén Mach number are modified by the two-fluid and FLR effects. In the presence of the diamagnetic drift due to the two-fluid effect, the equilibrium depends on the sign of the E × B drift velocity. The FLR effect suppresses the large modification due to the two-fluid effect. By constructing magnetic flux coordinates and a local equilibrium model from the analytic solution, the effects of the non-circular property of the magnetic flux surfaces in the poloidal cross-section on the components of the curvature vector is examined in detail. The analytic solution is also used for the benchmark of the numerical code. The numerical solutions with non-uniform pressure, density and temperature profiles show similar behavior to analytic solution.journal articl

Efficient diode-pumped Er:YAP master-oscillator power-amplifier system for laser power improvement at 2920 nm

    Get PDF
0000-0001-6465-2786We report on the first demonstration of laser-diode-pumped master-oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) system based on Er-doped bulk material working at 2920 nm. The relaxation oscillation at the beginning of the laser pulse from the Er:YAlO3 (YAP) oscillator was suppressed effectively when the pump frequency was increased to 140 Hz, as a result of the establishment of a three-level system. In the amplifier, the small signal gain of the Er:YAP strongly depends on pump duration and repetition frequency, and can reach the upper limit of parasitic oscillation. Further, 25.5 mJ of output pulse energy has been achieved from the amplifier at 150 Hz frequency (2.2 ms pump duration), with over 32% of optical-to-optical efficiency. Further improvement of the amplification ability of the MOPA system was discussed.journal articl

Coordinated design of the cartridge-type blanket and the ceramic pebble divertor for the helical reactor FFHR-b3

    Get PDF
0000-0002-7901-6077The cartridge-type blanket for the helical reactor has been updated and named the CARDISTRY-B3. Together with this, the ceramic pebble ergodic limiter/divertor system named the REVOLVER-D3 has been adopted in the design. There was a difficulty in fabricating the blanket cartridges due to the first wall shape with three-dimensional surface. This difficulty has been removed by introducing the slit first wall, where the first wall surface is formed by alternately stacking solid metal plates and porous plates made of metal or ceramic. The liquid metal flowing inside the blanket cartridge oozes out through the porous plates and forms the surface flow covering the first wall. Solid target plates for the helical divertor has been omitted, because the divertor region is already covered and protected by the liquid metal surface flow. The liquid metal freely falls inside the blanket cartridges by the gravity force and then exhausted to the pool set on the lower port. The ceramic pebbles, which are dropped to the inboard-side ergodic layer to form the flowing limiter divertor, also flow into the liquid metal pool. The pebbles and liquid metal are individually elevated again by screw conveyers. Since the free surface of the liquid metal is exposed to the plasma, the vapor pressure of the working liquid metal should be low enough. Ternary or quadruple alloys, which include Li, Sn, Pb (or Bi), and Er, have been selected as the candidates of the functional liquid metal for the CARDISTRY-B3 that satisfies the requirements of low vapor pressure, low density, low melting point, and high tritium breeding ratio. In this study, the coordinated design of CARDISTRY-B3 and REVOLVER-D3 for the FFHR-b3 is presented. The FFHR-b3 is one of the design options that aims at demonstration of 100 MW net electricity with two times larger devise size than LHD.journal articl

A mechanism of ion temperature peaking by impurity pellet injection in a heliotron plasma

    Get PDF
0000-0002-9536-9841Experiments on the Large Helical Device with the injection of carbon pellets into discharges of low density have demonstrated a significant reduction of the ion heat conduction in the plasma core and an increase in the central ion temperature by a factor of up to 2. These results are interpreted in the framework of a transport model elaborated on the basis of those applied previously to explain the improvement in confinement by impurity seeding into the tokamak devices TEXTOR and JET. The calculations performed reproduce well the strong peaking of the ion temperature profile with increasing carbon density nZ and the consequent drop in the confinement as nZ exceeds a certain critical level. The importance of different elements in the model, such as braking of the main ion rotation by friction with impurity ones and the shape of the density profiles, are investigated. A qualitative assessment of the applicability under fusion reactor conditions, e.g. of much higher plasma density and heating power, is performed.journal articl

Dust Formation from Arc Spots on Nanostructured Tungsten Surface

0000-0002-2023-9786Arcing experiments were conducted in the linear plasma device Pilot-PSI, where a pulsed plasma was superimposed to a steady state plasma. The arcing was observed by a fast framing camera, and the sample was analyzed with a transmission electron microscope. Observations of glowing objects released from the sample in response to the arcing and destruction of the fuzzy layer at the edge of the arc trail without significant melting suggested that dust was formed and released from the surface in response to arcing.journal articl

Initial Result of Neutron Emission Rate Analysis for Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequency Heated Deuterium Plasmas in LHD

    Get PDF
0000-0002-5364-805XA database of the total neutron emission rate (Sn) in the ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) heated deuterium plasma in the Large Helical Device (LHD) was developed with changing the ICRF injection power and electron density. The Sn measured in the experiment was compared with the neutron emission rate calculated by the thermal reactivity of deuterium plasma to predict Sn in long-pulse discharge and to understand the heating scheme of ICRF. The ratio of Sn evaluated by calculation and that by measurement in the electron cyclotron heating (ECH) and ICRF heating case has almost the same tendency as that of the ECH only case in which energetic deuterons are not expected. In the first campaign of deuterium ICRF plasma discharge with injection power up to 1.5 MW, neutron emission with regard to the ICRF tail deuteron was thought to be negligible. We expanded the Sn database and started building an Sn prediction code to perform a long-pulse deuterium discharge.journal articl

Configuration characteristics of the Chinese First Quasi-axisymmetric Stellarator

    Get PDF
0000-0002-0424-645XThe Chinese First Quasi-axisymmetric Stellarator (CFQS) will be the first operational quasi-axially symmetric stellarator in the world. The physical and engineering complexities led to the cancellation of two famous quasi-axisymmetric stellarators, CHS-qa and NCSX. Therefore, the major mission of the CFQS is to experimentally achieve the canonical quasi-axisymmetric configuration. The CFQS has been designed to possess a number of advanced features in fixed and free-boundary equilibria. It is a compact stellarator with an aspect ratio R/a ∼4.0. The neoclassical diffusion coefficient is similar to that of tokamaks in the collisionless regime. The MHD equilibrium of the CFQS configuration is stable up to volume-averaged normalized pressure β ∼1.1%. A region of the second ballooning stability exists in this facility with a large region of plasma, becoming second stable for β ∼2.7% in free-boundary equilibria. The gap between the first and second stability boundaries is very narrow, which is greatly beneficial for the CFQS operation in the second stable regime with high β plasma. A modular coil system with 16 coils is designed which robustly reproduces the standard quasi-axisymmetric magnetic field.journal articl
