Recent development of neutron and energetic-particle diagnostics for LHD deuterium discharges
An integrated set of neutron diagnostics developed for the deuterium operation of the Large Helical Device (LHD) has been revealing behavior of energetic ions in three-dimensional plasmas, together with energetic-particle diagnostics. In order to obtain deeper understanding of physics related to energetic ions in the LHD, development of plasma diagnostics that can provide energy distribution of energetic ions is now being accelerated. Recent advances in development of the D-D neutron energy spectrometer, a neutral particle analyzer based on a single-crystal chemical vapor deposition diamond, and a tangential fast-ion Dα diagnostic for deuterium discharges of the LHD are described.journal articl
Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy of Er II for Transition Probability Measurements
We present a laser induced breakdown spectrum of Er II in the near ultraviolet region. To use the spectrum for the evaluation of the transition probabilities, an alloy target with a low content of Er was used to suppress the self-absorption. From the linearity of the Boltzmann plot obtained by using the sensitivity corrected experimental intensity and existing transition probability data, the local thermal equilibrium condition of the plasma and the reliability of the transition probability data are confirmed. The linear function obtained in the Boltzmann plot is used for the determination of a previously unreported transition probability for the line at 393.863 nm.journal articl
Effect on impact properties of adding tantalum to V-4Cr-4Ti ternary vanadium alloy
0000-0001-6564-8922Four V-Ta-4Cr-4Ti quaternary alloys containing different quantities of Ta were investigated to determine the effect of Ta content on the Charpy impact properties. Five button-shaped ingots of the V-4Cr-4Ti ternary alloy and V-xTa-4Cr-4Ti quaternary alloys (x = 3, 9, 15, and 22 wt.%) were fabricated on a laboratory scale by using non-consumable arc-melting in an argon atmosphere. Charpy impact tests were conducted at temperatures ranging from 77 K to 293 K using an instrumented impact tester. Both the upper shelf energy and the ductile–brittle transition temperature increased with increasing Ta content. The addition of 3 wt.% Ta resulted in solid solution strengthening without any degradation of the Charpy impact properties. Thus, the addition of 3 wt.% Ta (V-3Ta-4Cr-4Ti) is an appropriate amount to use in blanket structural materials for nuclear fusion reactors. The spectra of TEM-EDS for V-3Ta-4Cr-4Ti quaternary alloy indicate that there is no significant enrichment of Ta in the matrix as compared with that in the precipitate. However, thermal aging may result in the formation of the Laves phase, causing the degradation of Charpy impact properties. The characterization of precipitates, thermal aging, and creep tests of the V-3Ta-4Cr-4Ti quaternary alloy need to be investigated to determine the optimum Ta content.journal articl
Effect of erbium concentration on the Verdet constant dispersion of LiY1.0-xErxF4 single crystal
0000-0002-7220-0613The dispersion of the Verdet constant of LiY1.0-xErxF4 crystals was evaluated from 190 nm to 500 nm for different doping concentrations of Er ions. A 15% doping concentration yielded a high Verdet constant of 54.5 rad/(T·m) at 193 nm. This value can be explained by the contribution of the diamagnetic term associated with LiYF4 and the paramagnetic term of the Er ions. Although the LiYF4 crystal yielded a lower value of −36.6 rad/(T·m) at 193 nm from Er-doped LiYF4, it can be used in the vacuum–ultraviolet region because of its high transmittance at wavelengths longer than 120 nm.journal articl
Plasma–neutral coupling allows electrostatic ion cyclotron waves to propagate below ion cyclotron frequency
0000-0003-3627-6060The effect of ion–neutral collisions on the propagation characteristics of electrostatic ion cyclotron (EIC) waves in a partially ionized plasma is investigated. The dispersion relation of EIC waves is derived using a fluid model taking neutral dynamics into account. The propagation properties of EIC modes, including the damping factor, are examined for various ionization degrees and collision frequencies, which determine the momentum transferred from ions to neutral particles. It is found that the motion of neutral particles driven by plasma–neutral coupling leads to an increase in the effective ion mass, and consequently, EIC waves can propagate even below the ion cyclotron frequency. In a hot neutral gas, the gas-thermal mode can also propagate as well as the EIC mode. The possibility of observing in the laboratory and the Earth's ionosphere is discussed.journal articl
Thermal Neutron Measurement Capability of a Single Crystal CVD Diamond Detector near the Reactor Core Region of UTR-KINKI
0000-0003-0920-2154Thermal neutron flux evaluation using a single crystal diamond detector (SDD) was carried out in the core region of the UTR-KINKI reactor where a mixed radiation field by thermal and fast neutrons and gamma-ray exists. The pulse shape discrimination method to extract pulses with a rectangular shape as well as a wide pulse-width was established to exclude pulses induced by gamma-rays. The SDD, using a 6LiF thermal neutron converter, is able to detect pulse events caused not only by fast neutrons but also by thermal neutrons through energy depositions into the diamond by energetic alpha and triton particles induced by thermal neutrons. Additionally, the SDD without the thermal neutron converter was used for the measurement of the energy deposition events only by fast neutrons. A comparison of the pulse counts of the SDD with or without the thermal neutron convertor deduced the energy deposition spectra by thermal neutrons. The thermal neutron flux in the core region of the UTR-KINKI reactor was evaluated to be 7.6 × 106 n cm−2 s−1 W−1 up to a reactor power of 1 W.journal articl
Microinstability and Zonal-Flow Response in Mixture Plasmas with Medium-Z and Nonthermal Impurity
0000-0003-2693-4859Ion- and electron-scale microinstabilities and the linear zonal-flow response in mixture plasmas with the medium-Z impurity and He-ash are investigated by means of a multi-species gyrokinetic model. In addition to the charge and dilution effects, stabilization/destabilization by nonthermal He-ash ions is clarified.journal articl
Initial operation of perpendicular line-of-sight compact neutron emission spectrometer in the large helical device
0000-0002-0160-0468The perpendicular line-of-sight compact neutron emission spectrometer (perpendicular CNES) was newly installed to understand the helically trapped fast-ion behavior through deuterium–deuterium (D–D) neutron energy spectrum measurement in the Large Helical Device (LHD). The energy calibration of the EJ-301 liquid scintillation detector system for perpendicular CNES was performed on an accelerator-based D–D neutron source. We installed two EJ-301 liquid scintillation detectors, which view the LHD plasma vertically from the lower side through the multichannel collimator. The D–D neutron energy spectrum was measured in a deuterium perpendicular-neutral-beam-heated deuterium plasma. By the derivative unfolding technique, it was found that the D–D neutron energy spectrum had a double-humped shape with peaks at ∼2.33 and ∼2.65 MeV. D–D neutron energy spectrum was calculated based on the fast ion distribution function using guiding center orbit-following models considering the detector’s energy resolution. The calculated peak energies in the D–D neutron energy spectrum almost match the experiment. In addition, a feasibility study toward the measurement of the energy distribution of ion-cyclotron-range-of-frequency-wave-accelerated beam ions was performed.journal articl
Modelling the Alfvén eigenmode induced fast-ion flow measured by an imaging neutral particle analyzer
0000-0002-3237-5195An imaging neutral particle analyzer (INPA) provides energy and radially resolved measurements of the confined fast-ion population ranging from the high-field side to the edge on the midplane of the DIII-D tokamak. In recent experiments, it was used to diagnose fast-ion flow in the INPA-interrogated phase-space driven by multiple, marginally unstable Alfvén eigenmodes (AEs). The key features of this measured fast-ion flow are: (I) a fast-ion flow from qmin and the injection energy (81 keV) towards lower energies and plasma periphery.(II) A flow from the same location towards higher energies and the plasma core, (III) a phase-space 'hole' at the injected energy and plasma core and (IV) a pile-up at the plasma core at lower energies (∼60 keV). Ad hoc energetic particle diffusivity modelling of TRANSP significantly deviates from the observation. Comparably, a reduced modelling, i.e. a combination of NOVA-K and ASCOT5 code with the measured mode structure and amplitude, generally reproduce some key features of the observed phase-space flow, but largely failed to interpret fast ion depletion near the plasma axis. At last, self-consistent, first-principle multi-phase hybrid simulations that include realistic neutral beam injection and collisions are able to reproduce most features of the time-resolved phase-space flow. During consecutive hybrid phases, an RSAE consistent with the experiment grows and saturates, redistributing the injected fast ions. The resulting synthetic INPA images are in good agreement with the measurement near the injection energy. The simulations track the fast-ion redistribution within the INPA range, confirming that the measured fast-ion flow follows streamlines defined by the intersection of phase-space surfaces of constant magnetic moment μ and constant E' = nE + ωPϕ, where n and ω are the instability toroidal mode number and frequency, and E and Pϕ the ion energy and toroidal canonical momentum. Nonperturbative effects are required to reproduce the depletion of fast ions near the magnetic axis at the injection energy.journal articl
Observation of a reduced-turbulence regime with boron powder injection in a stellarator
0000-0001-7644-751XIn state-of-the-art stellarators, turbulence is a major cause of the degradation of plasma confinement. To maximize confinement, which eventually determines the amount of nuclear fusion reactions, turbulent transport needs to be reduced. Here we report the observation of a confinement regime in a stellarator plasma that is characterized by increased confinement and reduced turbulent fluctuations. The transition to this regime is driven by the injection of submillimetric boron powder grains into the plasma. With the line-averaged electron density being kept constant, we observe a substantial increase of stored energy and electron and ion temperatures. At the same time, the amplitude of the plasma turbulent fluctuations is halved. While lower frequency fluctuations are damped, higher frequency modes in the range between 100 and 200 kHz are excited. We have observed this regime for different heating schemes, namely with both electron and ion cyclotron resonant radio frequencies and neutral beams, for both directions of the magnetic field and both hydrogen and deuterium plasmas.journal articl
