0000-0003-0655-7347The carbon deposition profile on a Directional Material Probe (DMP) installed in the inboard side of the torus in the Large Helical Device (LHD) is investigated using the ERO2.0 code. The experimental result of the carbon deposition profile with short and wide shadows (lower deposition density areas) on the DMP is reasonably explained by the carbons sputtered from the carbon divertor plates installed in the inboard side. The simulation proves that the short and wide shadows are produced by carbons sputtered from the right and left divertor plate arrays, respectively. The experimental carbon deposition profile accumulated in the previous experimental campaign (FY2010) was successfully reproduced by the simulation, which provides detailed understanding of material (carbon) migration in the divertor region in the LHD.journal articl

Upgrade of ICRF Antennas by Utilizing Impedance Transformers in LHD

    Get PDF
0000-0001-8972-6534For the high-power and long-pulse ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) heating of plasma in the Large Helical Device (LHD), two types of ICRF antennas are used. One is the Field-Aligned-Impedance-Transforming (FAIT) antenna. It has an In-Vessel Impedance Transformer (IVIT) in the vacuum region of the antenna and shows the possibility of high-power injection despite the short antenna head. To enhance the performance more, an Ex-Vessel Impedance Transformer (EVIT) was attached outside the LHD vacuum vessel. As a result, the injectable power increased. The other is the Handshake form (HAS) antenna. Plasma can be efficiently heated by adjusting the phase difference between currents in straps. However, the injectable power from the HAS antenna was originally small. Therefore, later an EVIT was attached to it. Moreover, the transmission line in the vacuum region was remodeled to form an IVIT. By utilizing these impedance transformers, the performance of the HAS antenna was drastically improved.journal articl

Confinement improvement during detached phase with RMP application in deuterium plasmas of LHD

0000-0002-0990-7093In order to explore the compatibility of good core plasma performance with divertor heat load mitigation, the interaction between cold edge plasma and core plasma transport, including the edge transport barrier (ETB), has been analysed in the divertor detachment discharges of deuterium plasmas in LHD with resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) field application. The RMP application introduces a widened edge stochastic layer and sharp boundary in the magnetic field structure between the confinement region and the edge stochastic layer. The widened edge stochastic layer enhances impurity radiation and provides stable detachment operation as compared with the case without RMP. It is found that ETB is formed at the confinement boundary at the onset of detachment transition. However, as the detachment deepens, the resistive pressure gradient-driven MHD mode is excited, which degrades the ETB. At the same time, however, the core transport decreases to keep global plasma stored energy (Wp) unchanged, showing clear core-edge coupling. After a gradual increase of density fluctuation during the MHD activity, a spontaneous increase of Wp and the recovery of ETB are observed while the detachment is maintained. Then, the coherent MHD mode ceases and ELM-like bursts appear. In the improved mode, impurity decontamination occurs, and the divertor heat load increases slightly. Key controlling physical processes in the interplay between core and cold edge plasma are discussed. A comparison between deuterium and hydrogen plasmas shows that hydrogen plasmas exhibit similar features to the deuterium ones in terms of density and magnetic fluctuations, impurity decontamination towards higher confinement, etc. But most of the features are modest in the hydrogen plasmas and thus no clear confinement mode transition with clear ETB formation is defined. Better global confinement is obtained in the deuterium plasmas than the hydrogen ones at a higher radiation level.journal articl

Quaternion Analysis of Transient Phenomena in Matrix Converter Based on Space-Vector Modulation

    Get PDF
The space vector of an output voltage can be rotated smoothly in a matrix converter. However, a zero-sequence component appears causing problems in the load, such as a motor. A quaternion is a four-dimensional hypercomplex number with an imaginary part that can simultaneously represent and deal with three-phase voltages. In addition, the quaternion is expressed in the exponential form; thus, it can easily represent the space vector rotation. Two zero configurations were used to optimize the ripple characteristics in fictitious pulse-width-modulated voltage-source inverter. The two zero configurations are used to remove the zero-sequence component from the matrix converter. The quaternion can be differentiated in time as well as rotate in space. Therefore, it is used to analyze transient phenomena in the matrix converter's rise-up and rise-down phases, and the switching's transition phase.journal articl

Preceding propagation of turbulence pulses at avalanche events in a magnetically confined plasma

    Get PDF
0000-0003-1088-8237The preceding propagation of turbulence pulses has been observed for the first time in heat avalanche events during the collapse of the electron internal transport barrier (e-ITB) in the Large Helical Device. The turbulence and heat pulses are generated near the foot of the e-ITB and propagate to the peripheral region within a much shorter time than the diffusion timescale. The propagation speed of the turbulence pulse is approximately 10 km/s, which is faster than that of the heat pulse propagating at a speed of 1.5 km/s. The heat pulse propagates at approximately the same speed as that in the theoretical prediction, whereas the turbulence pulse propagates one order of magnitude faster than that in the prediction, thereby providing important insights into the physics of non-local transport.journal articl

Polarization and magnetization in collisional and turbulent transport processes

0000-0001-5444-1758Expressions of polarization and magnetization in magnetically confined plasmas are derived, which include full expansions in the gyroradius to treat effects of both equilibrium and microscopic electromagnetic turbulence. Using the obtained expressions, densities and flows of particles are related to those of gyrocenters. To the first order in the normalized gyroradius expansion, the mean part of the particle flow is given by the sum of the gyrocenter flow and the magnetization flow, which corresponds to the so-called magnetization law in drift kinetics, while the turbulent part contains the polarization flow as well. Collisions make an additional contribution to the second-order particle flow. The mean particle flux across the magnetic surface is of the second-order, and it contains classical, neoclassical, and turbulent transport processes. The Lagrangian variational principle is used to derive the gyrokinetic Poisson and Ampère equations, which properly include mean and turbulent parts so as to be useful for full-f global electromagnetic gyrokinetic simulations. It is found that the second-order Lagrangian term given by the inner product of the turbulent vector potential and the drift velocity consisting of the curvature drift and the ∇B drift should be retained in order for the derived Ampère equation to correctly include the diamagnetic current, which is necessary especially for the full-f high-beta plasma simulations. The turbulent parts of these gyrokinetic Poisson and Ampère equations are confirmed to agree with the results derived from the WKB representation in earlier works.journal articl

0000-0002-7301-9429We report a side-polished sensor structure for mid-infrared (IR) fiber evanescent wave spectroscopy, produced by means of a mechanical polishing process. By integrating a mid-IR light source into this sensor system, spectroscopic analyses could be performed over the range from 2515 to 3735 nm. Two types of sensor structures were fabricated to examine their characteristics and performance. Spectroscopic analyses of liquid and gas samples were successfully performed using one of the fiber sensors without any further decoration/customization of the sensing portion. Qualitative/quantitative measurements were demonstrated for glycerin and diethylene glycol as liquid samples. The measurement results for CH4 gas samples with concentrations of 1% and 5% allowed the lowest detectable concentration to be estimated at 0.52%.journal articl

Fast Signal Modeling for Thomson Scattering Diagnostics and Effects on Electron Temperature Evaluation

    Get PDF
0000-0003-2217-6018As a signal processing method for fast digitizers of the switched-capacitor-type in Thomson scattering diagnostics, a “model fitting” method is proposed. An ideal shape of the signal is estimated by this method by averaging many Thomson scattering signals. After applying this method to a relatively low density LHD plasma, the scattering of electron temperature profiles becomes small. The magnitude of error is also reduced by about 60% at some spatial channels in the core plasma. Simulations of signals with some noises based on the JT-60SA Thomson scattering system enables a showing of the expected error in electron temperature. The error can be suppressed by the “model fitting” method.journal articl

Application of Dual Frequency Comb Method as an Approach to Improve the Performance of Multi-Frequency Simultaneous Radiation Doppler Radar for High Temperature Plasma Diagnostics

    Get PDF
0000-0001-5473-2109A new Doppler radar using millimeter-waves in the Ka-band, named the “dual-comb Doppler reflectometer”, has been developed to measure the turbulence intensity and its velocity in high-temperature plasmas. For the realization of a fusion power generation, it is very important to know the spatial structure of turbulence, which is the cause of plasma confinement degradation. As a non-invasive and high spatial resolution measurement method for this purpose, we apply a multi-frequency Doppler radar especially with simultaneous multi-point measurement using a frequency comb. The newly developed method of synchronizing two frequency combs allows a lower intermediate frequency (IF) than the previously developed frequency comb radar, lowering the bandwidth of the data acquisition system and enabling low-cost, long-duration plasma measurements. In the current dual-comb radar system, IF bandwidth is less than 0.5 GHz; it used to be 8 GHz for the entire Ka-band probing. We applied this system to the high-temperature plasma experimental device, the Large Helical Device (LHD), and, to demonstrate this system, verified that it shows time variation similar to that of the existing Doppler radar measurements.journal articl
