Absorption Analysis of Electron Cyclotron Waves in the Magnetospheric Plasma Device RT-1
The absorption efficiency of electron cyclotron heating is investigated theoretically and experimentally to understand the wave heating mechanisms under the overdense state and the density limit. The features of self-organizing mechanisms have been observed in the dipole confinement system [M. Nishiura et al., Nucl. Fusion 55, 053019 (2015)]. The modulated 2.45 GHz electromagnetic (EM) wave is applied to the RT-1 plasmas to evaluate the EM wave's absorption efficiency from the diamagnetic signals' response. The absorption efficiency maintains a constant 100% beyond the O-mode's cutoff density. However, it decreases rapidly near the 1.6 × 1017 m−3 line-averaged density, which is twice higher than the 2.45 GHz O-mode cutoff. At less than 0.6 × 1017 m−3, the absorption efficiency simulated by a ray-tracing code in a two-dimensional model explains the experimental absorption efficiency. However, it deviates from the experimental value near the cutoff density and is more significant at the density limit. We discuss the difference between the experimental and numerical results.journal articl
Hierarchical foliation of one-dimensional Vlasov–Poisson system
0000-0002-1648-1174We elucidate the intermediate of the macroscopic fluid model and the microscopic kinetic model by studying the Poisson algebraic structure of the one-dimensional Vlasov–Poisson system. The water-bag model helps formulating the hierarchy of sub-algebras, which interpolates the gap between the fluid and kinetic models. By analyzing the embedding of the sub-manifold of an intermediate hierarchy in a more microscopic hierarchy, we characterize the microscopic effect as the symmetry breaking pertinent to a macroscopic invariant.journal articl
Reduction of pulsed particle load with dynamic pressure induced by transient recycled neutral flux
0000-0001-6090-5010From pulsed plasma experiments focusing on neutral pressure dependence, the impacts of a transition from a low to a high recycling target on the particle load were investigated and discussed in the linear plasma device, Magnum-PSI. Time traces of the target ion flux were mitigated in high neutral pressure cases because of a plasma-neutral interaction. On the other hand, in low neutral-pressure cases, the target ion flux indicated partial suppression in the last part of the pulse. The Langmuir probe, located 200 mm upstream from the target plate, did not exhibit such a suppression. Pulse suppression can be expected from the localized interaction between recycled neutral flux and pulsed plasma in front of the target. The mean-free paths of recycled neutral particles regarding the charge exchange with pulse ions and elastic scattering with background neutral particles were compared. Modeling using a fluid code coupled with a neutral transport code was performed, and it was concluded that dynamic pressure induced by the transient recycled neutral flux caused sufficient momentum loss to stagnate the pulsed plasma toward the target plate.journal articl
Cryogenically cooled 2.8 μm Er:YAP laser with watt-level output power
0000-0001-6930-0843We report the first watt-level, cryogenically cooled Er:YAP laser operating in the 3 μm spectral region. The spectroscopic properties of a 5 at% Er:YAP crystal were studied at cooling temperatures ranging from 77–290 K. The fluorescence lifetime of the 4I11/2 level associated with the 3 μm laser transition decreased with an increase in temperature; whereas, the lifetime of the 4I13/2 level increased with an increase in temperature. Moreover, over 1 W of output power at 2798 nm was achieved from the liquid-nitrogen-cooled Er:YAP laser with a slope efficiency of 20%, and the limitations to higher output power were discussed.journal articl
Studies of energetic particle transport induced by multiple Alfvén eigenmodes using neutron and escaping energetic particle diagnostics in Large Helical Device deuterium plasmas
0000-0003-4555-1837Studies of energetic particle transport due to energetic-particle-driven Alfvénic instability have progressed using neutron and energetic particle diagnostics in Large Helical Device deuterium plasmas. Alfvénic instability excited by injecting an intensive neutral beam was observed by a magnetic probe and a far-infrared laser interferometer. The interferometer showed Alfvénic instability composed of three modes that existed from the core to the edge of the plasma. A comparison between the observed frequency and shear Alfvén spectra suggested that the mode activity was most likely classified as an Alfvénic avalanche. A neutron fluctuation detector and a fast ion loss detector indicated that Alfvénic instability induced transport and loss of co-going transit energetic ions. The dependence of the drop rate of the neutron signal on the Alfvénic instability amplitude showed that significant transport occurred. Significant transport might be induced by the large amplitude and radially extended multiple modes, as well as a large deviation of the energetic ion orbit from the flux surface.journal articl
Electrical insulation performances of ceramic materials developed for advanced blanket systems under intense radiations
0000-0002-0707-5553Various oxides and SiC have been proposed as candidate materials for electrical insulation coatings and inserts to suppress the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) pressure drop in liquid metal fusion blanket systems. From the early stage of the MHD insulator development, the magnitudes of the radiation-induced conductivities (RICs), i.e., increases in conductivities by radiation excitation, have been evaluated on bulk and coated specimens by using several radiation sources. While the insulating performances of the oxide coated and SiC plate specimens are inferior to those of high quality and purity bulk materials due to cracks, pits, sintering additives, etc., the results indicate that the RIC phenomenon would not prevent the MHD insulators from achieving the required performances (10−3–10−2 S/m for coatings, 102 S/m for inserts) at the first wall of the blanket (500–700 °C, several kGy/s). The recent design investigation of blanket modules for DEMO reactor conditions provides more precise information for prediction of the performances in reactors and conditions to be simulated in the future irradiation damage studies. In the case of the coatings, the suppression of recoiled Li from the liquid metal breeder/coolant might be an issue to be considered in the development.journal articl
Application of optical vortex to laser-induced fluorescence velocimetry of ions in a plasma
0000-0002-0602-0665Atoms moving in an optical vortex beam are subjected to the azimuthal Doppler effect in addition to the usual longitudinal Doppler effect. This fact extends the capabilities of plasma flow measurement using laser-induced fluorescence to the direction perpendicular to the laser path by employing optical vortex beams. Furthermore, by assuming a uniform flow traversing the beam, the LIF spectrum undergoes deformation due to the spatial dependence of the resonant absorption condition. Preliminary experiments were performed for metastable argon ions in the vicinity of a negatively biased electrode immersed in a plasma. An increase in the standard deviation of the spectrum was observed when a negative voltage was applied to the electrode, which qualitatively agrees with our previous numerical study.journal articl
Monte Carlo Solver for Partly Calculating a Solution to the Poisson Equation in Three-Dimensional Curvilinear Coordinates
0000-0002-1642-1235We develop a new simulation code for solving the Poisson equation, based on Monte Carlo methods. When static resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) are used in tokamak plasma to mitigate or suppress edge-localized modes, the RMPs generate an electric field in the ergodized edge region. The electrostatic potential should be calculated only in the edge region to reduce the computational cost of solving the Poisson equation in the complicated three-dimensional magnetic structure, which is assumed to be fixed in time. In this study, we propose a basic idea for evaluating an electrostatic potential given by the Poisson equation in only a part of the domain in curvilinear coordinates. This Poisson solver allows for the boundary condition to be set not only inside the selected region in which the potential is evaluated, but also outside the selected region. Several benchmarks for the developed code are also presented.journal articl
Z-dependent crossing of excited-state energy levels in highly charged galliumlike lanthanide atomic ions
Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) optical transitions of lanthanide highly charged ions have been studied. The [Ni]4s24p–[Ni]4s24d and [Ni]4s24p–[Ni]4s4p2 transition lines of galliumlike lanthanide elements have been spectroscopically measured in large helical device (LHD) plasma and electron-beam ion trap (EBIT) plasma. The wavelengths for Eu ions agreed within 0.03% between the LHD and EBIT measurements. Due to the enhancement of spin-orbit interactions along with the increase of atomic number Z in 4p atomic orbitals, energy splitting between 4p1/2 and 4p3/2 orbitals increases significantly from lanthanum to lutetium, causing the crossing of Z-dependent wavelength curves. The spectral line positions and strengths are theoretically calculated by means of the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method. The mixing of the [Ni]4s24d and [Ni]4s4p2 configurations leads to an avoided crossing in the apparent wavelength curves. The configuration mixing makes both the [Ni]4s24p–[Ni]4s24d and [Ni]4s24p–[Ni]4s4p2 lines well visible in the EUV spectra near the level crossing point. The levels are found to cross between Z=62 and 63.journal articl
