    Multiscale finite element analysis of cylindrical jellyroll based energy storage devices

    Lithium batteries are an ever-expanding solution for energy storage; however, their internal chemistry is highly prone to combustion. Any severe mechanical failure can lead to this scenario, which is problematic as their use in electric vehicles increases. As such, finite element modeling efforts need to improve in order to properly define the failure mechanics of these batteries. Efforts have already been made to create an accurate model of the battery as a whole, but this generalized model does not capture the short-circuiting phenomena within the internal components. To solve this problem, a representative volume model that generates input data and simplifies the internal geometry for a global-local model is proposed. This allows the battery to be accurately modeled mechanically, is computationally inexpensive, and provides an insight into the failure of the exceedingly small internal components to pinpoint exactly when short circuiting occurs

    Generalizing coordination threshold graphical games on contagion and secret sharing through graph features

    Coordination graphical games depict interactions among a network of participants that must work together to achieve a desired outcome. Many sociological, economic, and political scenarios are modeled using these games. The flexible framework graphical games provide leaves a variety of parameters to be determined based on application, though the parameters that describe the network of participants are of central importance. There are several avenues previously unexplored in this area. In this work, a metric is introduced to describe graph fitness for a basic coordination graphical game and restrictions on the longterm behavior of the game are identified. Similarly, game outcome can be categorized in terms of graph labelings. Graph labelings provide a way to describe weighting in a graphical game that is not relative or random. Finally, using general network topology, rational secret sharing is expanded as a graphical game

    Comparing role differences among systems architects, systems designers, and systems engineers

    The roles of a systems architect (SA), systems designer (SD), and systems engineer (SE) often work together to develop systems, especially as the scale and complexity of engineered systems increase. However, management of these roles can result in ambiguity of task assignments and may reduce accountability for deliverables. Furthermore, there are few published works examining the roles of SAs, SDs, and SEs collectively. This research explores perceptions of the similarities and differences between the roles of SAs, SDs, and SEs by conducting a systematic literature review of 57 sources containing 1064 quotes in addition to a thematic content analysis, analyzed based on the perceived tasks, relationships, qualifications, job titles, and deliverables of these roles. The findings show that there is inconsistent understanding of the roles in literature, possibly stemming from an overlap in the distinct roles, a lack of distinction between the roles themselves, or ambiguous terminology surrounding these roles

    Internal kinematic structure and environment of an extremely high-shear, Low-CAPE QLCS across North Alabama on 03 March 2023

    During the morning of 03 March 2023, a potent Quasi-Linear Convective System (QLCS) impacted northern Alabama, The QLCS was characterized by extremely High Shear and Low CAPE (HSLC), with CAPE below 500 Jkg-1 and 0-6 km wind shear approaching 49 ms-1. A total of 315 damaging straight-line wind reports were noted by the SPC, with the majority of those occurring across the southeastern US. This study examines the mesoscale variability in vertical wind profiles (VWPs) and storm-relative helicity (SRH), including documenting the presence of extreme shear and the variance in SRH magnitudes across northern AL. VWPs indicated that wind shear increased from the surface to 3 km AGL in the hours leading up to QLCS passage. Elevation and topography may play a role in SRH variability, as 0-3 km SRH at Hytop, AL approached 1,000 m2s-2, over 200 m2s-2 in magnitude greater than profilers within the Tennessee Valley

    170 Years of San Francisco Sea Level Pressure

    This data-recovery project and subsequent data analyses address the construction of a continuous, long instrumental record of sea level pressure for San Francisco, California, USA and examines what the time series may reveal about atmospheric patterns through time. Atmospheric pressure is a physical component which is associated with both daily and seasonal weather phenomena and is one of the most robust of the meteorological variables. Observational data of surface pressure (SFP) and later sea level pressure (SLP) were accessed from digital archives, with a large part of these being manually keyed from original observations on paper. San Francisco, being near sea level and with a small amplitude of temperature variations, allowed the conversion of SFP to SLP to be made with little ambiguity. There were four locations in the area, all near sea level, which provided observations and which were merged into a single time series using morning (~0700) and evening (~1900) daily values. The construction procedure identified and corrected for outlier values among other issues. The dataset begins on 1 Mar 1852 and ends with 31 Dec 2021. It was found, as expected, that prolonged extreme precipitation episodes are well-correlated with SLP while seasonal Sierra Nevada snowfall and nominal heavy rainfall events were less correlated. The phase of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation is found to have no significant relationship with San Francisco’s SLP. Pacific Decadal Oscillation phase also had no significant relationship. Comparison with CMIP6 model output indicated significant differences in basic patterns such as the phase and amplitude of the annual cycle of SLP
