The Real Cost of School in 2023 - Back to School Survey (Report)

    No full text
ReportEvery year, for 18 years, Barnardos has highlighted the costs incurred by parents in preparing their children to return to school each September, reporting on the pressures parents are directly experiencing to cover back to school costs. In Budget 2023, the Government took the progressive step to provide free schoolbooks to all primary school students. Despite this development, expenses remain high for parents. It is shameful and unjust that any child should grow up in a household experiencing severe financial pressures, struggling to afford something so fundamental as education. Now is the time to build on last year’s momentous step and set out plans to provide a truly free education to all children in Ireland. Barnardos calls on the government to prioritise the following four steps: 1. Provide free schoolbooks to all secondary children 2. Make it mandatory that all schools have an option of a low-cost uniform 3. Maintain Back to School Footwear and Clothing Allowance, increase and expand thresholds, and extend Child Benefit 4. End voluntary contribution

Critical Incidents in Early Learning and Care and School Age Childcare Services: Supporting Children’s Emotional Wellbeing

    No full text
BookletAll Early Learning and Care (ELC) and School Age Childcare (SAC) services are required to have a service level Critical Incident Plan that outlines how the service will prepare for and respond to critical incidents should one occur. For information on how to prepare for critical incidents see the companion guide Critical Incidents in Early Learning and Care and School Age Childcare Services: Planning and Responding. As well as the practical considerations involved, it is essential that you think about how you will support the emotional wellbeing of both the children and the adults in your service. All of the children in your setting, from the youngest to the oldest, will need this support. When there has been a traumatic event in a community, for example, an accident, an attack or death, or an incident such as a fire or flood causing severe damage to the service buildings and facilities, everyone is impacted, even if they were not a first-hand witness to events. Children are reliant on their parents and other primary caregivers to protect them from harmful experiences but, sadly, we cannot always protect them when potentially traumatic serious incidents happen in or near their setting, or in their community. Thankfully, we can provide supports for children that can help to minimise the impact that such an incident could have on their wellbeing. This resource provides information on the kinds of support that will help children in an Early Learning and Care setting or a School Age Childcare setting to cope better following a critical incident, which will have a positive impact on their wellbeing both now and in their future

Cost of Living Crisis - Impact on Children

ReportWe have been monitoring the impact of cost of living increases on families and children over the past 18 months. This report outlines the impact that cost of living increases has had on children and families across the country over the past six months, through a nationally representative survey of parents (315) carried out by Amarach Research and 30 one to one interviews with parents who are currently supported through Barnardos services, both conducted in April this year. We outline in detail the number of families who are cutting back and going without due to increases in cost of living, the struggles families are facing and the impact it is having on their children. We set out the immediate and longer-term solutions the government should adopt to combat this crisis1. All case studies and parental quotes are taken directly from parents interviewed or Barnardos front line staff. The findings below show that families across the country are struggling to provide their children with essentials such as heating, electricity, food and clothing. Many families are constantly trying to keep their heads above water, living day to day, struggling to keep their children from being pulled into deprivation. For some, the cost of living crisis has drastically affected their standard of living and the quality of their childhood

Responding to Trauma in Early Learning and Care: Domestic Abuse

    Get PDF
Information sheetThis resource, which is one in a series looking at how ELC settings can support children experiencing adversity, focuses on children who have lived or who are still living in homes where there is domestic abuse. It explores how experiences of domestic abuse can impact young children, how to recognise trauma symptoms in children in response to domestic abuse and violence, and how, as early years educators, in partnership with families and support agencies, we can support children to recover
