Building Little Libraries: Developing the Library Area in Early Learning and Care
Get PDFBookletA child’s language development depends on them experiencing a rich environment of words, sounds, rhythm, and verbal and non-verbal interactions from the day they are born. Becoming literate – that is, learning about the print forms of language and using them to communicate – also begins at birth when babies and young children are provided with a ‘language rich’ environment, where adults read with them and give them books. The experiences children have in their early years have dramatic and long-term effects on how they develop and learn. Talking, singing and reading with young children has a significant impact on the development of their brains. Research has found that children who are read with frequently by different people, have access to a large number and a broad range of books, and who use a library regularly score highest on the measures of early literacy.1 One of the key roles of early learning and care provision is to create an environment that is rich in opportunities for babies and young children to experience language and literacy. This resource gives guidance to early childhood educators on how best to support children’s literacy experiences through the provision of a library or book area in the setting, complemented and further enhanced by linking with and accessing the services of your local public library

A Shared Understanding of Childhood Domestic Violence and Abuse
Get PDFReportOne of the most basic human rights principles is the right to live free from violence, including the threat of violence. Article 19 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which came into force in September 1990, guarantees this right to every child, and obliges States to take appropriate measures to protect the child from all forms of violence. The Childhood Domestic Violence Project aims to promote the visibility of children living with violence and abuse perpetrated within their parents/carers relationships, and to highlight young people’s experience of violence and abuse in their own early intimate relationships. The Project aims to support collective and collaborative approaches to identifying the needs of these children and young people, and to the delivery of effective and responsive services. Get PDFBookIKEA supports our 7 Early Years centres across Ireland in Dublin, Thurles and Cork. The programmes we provide in each service focus on children aged three to five from disadvantaged areas and those living in challenging family circumstances. The aim of the service is to ensure the children attending will be ready for primary school and will develop the social, emotional and cognitive skills to ensure they are ready to thrive in Primary school. During Covid-19, our Early Years centres have remained open and are providing a breakfast and a hot lunch for all the children that attend, so their bodies are nourished, as well as their minds. We asked our Barnardos cooks to submit their favourite recipes for the IKEA cookbook to share with you. I hope you like the recipes and enjoy making the food with your children, friends and family
Evaluation of The Childhood Domestic Violence & Abuse Project
Get PDFEvaluation reportThe Childhood Domestic Violence and Abuse (CDVA) Project aims to assist in increasing the visibility of childhood domestic abuse; supporting a collective and collaborative approach to identifying the needs of children; and delivering effective services in response. This project is hosted by Barnardos, and funded by the National Tusla Domestic Sexual and Gender Based Violence team. The CDVA was independently evaluated by researchers at Trinity College Dublin in 2021 in order to review the project in terms of its overall aims and to inform the future development of the project. A process evaluation utilising a mixed-methods analytic framework was conducted, incorporating the views of those involved in the implementation of the project, key stakeholders and participating members. The findings indicated a number of project successes and scope for development. The findings informed a number of key recommendations, including the importance of keeping the work child-centred, boosting visibility of the issue of childhood domestic violence through education and knowledge sharing, and supporting the expansion of the project through clarity of purpose and goals, and ongoing purposeful collaboration
