Investigations into the mechanical properties of TA6V Dode-Thin lattice sandwich beams fabricated by powder bed laser beam melting process

    Get PDF
This paper compares the results of a theoretical approach, finite element analysis (FEA) and mechanical tests of monolithic TA6V Dode-Thin lattice core sandwich structures manufactured by powder bed laser beam melting process. An analytical approach to evaluate the mechanical properties of one Dode-Thin strut is briefly presented. The strut is then replaced by an equivalent beam whose cross-section is a solid circle. Various finite element (FE) models are used to calculate the effective mechanical properties of a defect-free structure and compared to the analytical results of beam theory. Besides the calculations, different experimental tests and measurements are carried out to measure the stiffness of the sandwich beams. These experiments show that both theoretical and numerical predictions significantly overestimate the stiffnesses. The discrepancies between the models and the as-built components are mainly due to geometrical imperfections and internal defects (porosity) caused by the AM process. Optical observations and X-ray computed tomography (CT) are then performed to determine the actual cross-sectional properties of the struts. Finally, this study provides the engineer with a simple method to replace a Dode-Thin strut with an equivalent beam of solid circular cross-section, and to define the equivalent 3D-orthotropic material with homogenized mechanical properties. Another contribution of this work is the insight into the as-built physical parameters to improve the correlation between models and experimental data.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Music and mathematics: Key components and contributions of an integrated STEAM teaching approach

    Get PDF
The limited number of STEAM educational experiences in Spain was the motivation behind this study, whose goal was to identify the contributions and essential components of integrated STEAM teaching, specifically the approach that relates the arts (music) to science subjects (mathematics). To this end, a multiple case study was carried out in primary classrooms at three schools. The interviews carried out with teachers, students, and management teams, and the observation of the application of different activities provided a comprehensive vision of the keys to integrated STEAM teaching (co-teaching, coordination, and an interdisciplinary relationship between subjects). The data also brought to light the benefits of STEAM educational practice (procedural mimesis between subjects, student motivation, links between teachers, and professional growth) and also the difficulties encountered. All this, contrasted with the ideas expounded in the literature, enables us to propose lines of work that the educational community should find suggestive and inspiring since the combination of science with the arts, creativity, integration, and innovation has the potential to promote the necessary aptitudes for students in the 21st century.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Mainstreaming Gender Equality in the EU Green Deal: A Labour Perspective

    No full text
The implementation of the EU Green Deal, aiming at reaching carbon-neutrality by 2050, will entail significant changes for the European society. Starting from one of the three pillars of this strategy—no leaving behind any person—the Author examines this set of green policies—and especially one of its main funding mechanisms, the Just Transition Fund—from a gender equality perspective, assessing its capability to prevent such an epochal change to worsen women’s condition in the labour market. After having demonstrated that gender perspective is less prominent in the Just Transition Fund, if compared with other anti-crisis funding mechanisms adopted by the EU in recent years, the contribution focuses on possible remedies to this flaw, presenting three existing solutions for gender mainstreaming that could be integrated therein: i) the EIGE Gender Impact Assessment Toolkit; ii) Tool No. 11 of the ILO Gender Mainstreaming Strategies; and iii) Gender Equality Plans already integrated in the EU system for funding research. A critical analysis of the aptitude of these solutions to make more gender sensitive, from a labour perspective, the EU green funding system is offered in the final part of the contribution, according to three criteria: efficacy, versatility, and difficulty of implementation.info:eu-repo/semantics/submittedVersio

From Fukushima to fossil fuels: Carbon emissions, climate narratives, and grassroots movements in Japan's energy transition

    Get PDF
The Fukushima Nuclear Accident triggered an energy predicament in Japan, necessitating initiatives to decarbonise and denuclearise its energy landscape. This shift has intensified reliance on fossil fuels, notably coal, inciting widespread anti-coal disputes throughout the nation. This research scrutinises the dynamics of carbon emissions and their interrelation with climate activism narratives, emphasising the mobilisation of communities to confront issues of inequality and justice. Employing a club convergence methodology, this study analyses the patterns of carbon emissions from fossil fuels across 47 administrative divisions in Japan from 1990 to 2020. This quantitative analysis is enriched with a qualitative content analysis of anti-coal movements, utilising the comprehensive Global Atlas of Environmental Justice (EJAtlas) as a primary resource. The findings disclose pronounced sub-national disparities in energy transitions and carbon emissions. Narratives within anti-coal activism predominantly encompass themes of global warming, air and water pollution, social and cultural impacts, and health repercussions. We find that regions with historically high emissions predominantly embrace narratives of climate and environmental justice, whereas rural regions experiencing escalating emissions integrate these with narratives of peripheralisation. The opposition to technocratic resolutions and the endorsement for transitions to low carbon society are salient within these movements, resonating with the degrowth paradigm advocating for equitable and sustainable alternatives. This research underscores the pivotal role of social movements in mitigating regional emissions disparities and illustrates the evolution of grassroots movements towards embracing sustainable alternatives.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

More adult women than men at high cardiometabolic risk reported worse lifestyles and self-reported health status in the COVID-19 lockdown

    Get PDF
Background: The COVID-19 lockdown represented an immense impact on human health, which was characterized by lifestyle and dietary changes, social distancing and isolation at home. Some evidence suggests that these consequences mainly affected women and altered relevant ongoing clinical trials. The aim of this study was to evaluate the status and changes in diet, physical activity (PA), sleep and self-reported health status (SRH) as perceived by older adult men and women with metabolic syndrome during the COVID-19 lockdown. Methods: We analyzed data from 4681 Spanish adults with metabolic syndrome. We carried out a telephone survey during May and June 2020 to collect information on demographics, dietary habits, PA, sleep, SRH and anthropometric data. Results: The mean age of participants was 64.9 years at recruitment, and 52% of participants were men. Most participants (64.1%) perceived a decrease in their PA during confinement. Regarding gender-specific differences, a higher proportion of women than men perceived a decrease in their PA (67.5% vs. 61.1%), Mediterranean diet adherence (20.9% vs. 16.8%), sleep hours (30.3% vs. 19.1%), sleep quality (31.6% vs. 18.2%) and SRH (25.9% vs. 11.9%) (all p < 0.001). Conclusions: The COVID-19 lockdown affected women more negatively, particularly their self-reported diet, PA, sleep and health status.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Post-Pandemic Shifts in Pro-Environmental Attitudes and Behaviors in a Marine Protected Area

    Get PDF
Interest in understanding environmental attitudes and behaviors after traumatic events has been widely studied, but research specific to the COVID-19 pandemic has yielded inconclusive results. This study addresses a gap by exploring the relationship between COVID-19 and pro-environmental behavior (PEB) in marine protected areas (MPAs), which are vital for preserving marine ecosystems and biodiversity. We focus on scuba divers’ environmental attitudes and behaviors within an MPA, using a mixed methodology that combines surveys based on the New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) scale with covert participant observation. Our findings indicate a moderate increase in pro-environmental concerns post-pandemic, particularly regarding nature’s fragility. However, a gap remains between expressed attitudes and actual behaviors, with notable differences in pro-ecological behavior during leisure activities compared to behavior at home. Additionally, risk perception related to COVID-19 has gained prominence, often overshadowing environmental concerns. This study contributes to a better understanding of environmental attitudes and behaviors in the context of MPAs during the ongoing social changes post-COVID-19. These insights can guide more sustainable management of MPAs and inform future research, which should further explore these trends in similar contexts.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

.maternidades diversas: Construcción del rol social en madres de personas autistas. Profundización teórica sobre la realidad materna y los cuidados invisibles

    Get PDF
Many feminist voices show the reality that undermines society, women who take a step forward with the main purpose of talking about what is still untouchable but judged and silenced in our society: motherhood. When this happens in a so-called normal environment, there is not much room for mothers of autistics and their real experiences. That's why this theoretical approach, supported by narratives, focus on how these women construct their motherhood, what meaning they give to maternal love and instinct, to the invisible care, and whether they find the social support that opens the way to collective care.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
