Early languages
Early childhood education should provide toddlers with the best learning opportunities. Nowadays, when focusing on language and language learning, the best learning opportunities should include adapting the plurilingual approach to the toddlers' needs and abilities. The plurilingual approach looks at language and language learning in a complex and enriching way: the focus is not primarily placed on acquiring words but on acquiring a positive attitude towards learning words.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Local technology to enhance data privacy and security in educational technology
In educational environments, technological adoption in the last 10 years has enabled a data-driven and decision-making paradigm in organizations. The integration of cloud services in schools and universities is a positive shift in the field of learning, but it also presents threats to all academic roles that need to be discussed in terms of protection, privacy, and confidentiality. Cloud storage brings the ubiquity of data to this technical transition and a delusive opportunity for cost savings. In many cases, this suggests that certain actors, beyond the control of schools and colleges, collect, handle and treat educational data on private servers and data centers. This privatization enables the manipulation of stored records, leaks, and unauthorized access. In this article, we expose the possibilities that open from the viewpoint of local technology adoption. We seek to reduce or even totally solve the detrimental effects of using cloud-based instructional and analytical technology, mixing or only using local technology. Technological methods that conform to this alternate viewpoint and new lines of study are also being suggested and created.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
A qualitative approach to help adjust the design of management subjects in ICT engineering undergraduate programs through user experience in a smart classroom context
Qualitative research activities, including first-day of class surveys and user experience interviews on completion of a subject were carried out to obtain students’ feedback in order to improve the design of the subject ‘Information Systems’ as a part of a general initiative to enhance ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) engineering programs. Due to the COVID-19 (corona virus disease 2019) pandemic, La Salle URL adopted an Emergency Remote Teaching tactical solution in the second semester of the 2019–2020 academic year, just before implementing a strategic learning approach based on a new Smart Classroom (SC) system deployed in the campus facilities. The latter solution was developed to ensure that both on-campus and off-campus students could effectively follow the course syllabus through the use of new technological devices introduced in classrooms and laboratories, reducing the inherent difficulties of online learning. The results of our findings show: (1) No major concerns about the subject were identified by students; (2) Interaction and class dynamics were the main issues identified by students, while saving time on commuting when learning from home and access to recorded class sessions were the aspects that students considered the most advantageous about the SC.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Dignity: A Philosophical approach
On the 3rd June 2016 and 22nd June 2018 two seminars organized by RCC Study Group Studies on Life and Human Dignity were held at Harvard Law School (Cambridge, Massachusetts). Both seminars gathered well-renowned professors from diff erent fi elds of science from European and American universities. The aim was to study and analyze the concept of human dignity in life and at the time of death, and some of its manifestations and potential threats in todays world. In the last decades, a spectacular development in the diverse fi elds of science, economy, and trade and communications has taken place in society. These advances in human progress, as laudable as they may be, sometimes do not eff ectively correspond to parallel recognition of every man and womans human dignity. In fact, in many cases, this progress results in a series of contradictions and possible dangers and challenges. This book brings together a selection of papers presented at those seminars regarding the big issue of human dignity and law.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Project Based Learning or the Rethinking of an Engineering Subject: Measuring Motivation
Changes in society often imply rethinking approaches to certain ways of doing things. Changes in students that enter university may require a rethinking of certain subjects. This document presents the redesign of an engineering subject with the goal of improving the students’ classroom experience. The change implies moving from methodology based on traditional magistral classes to a methodology based on Project Based Learning and non-traditional class sessions. Besides, the evaluation of the students will be done by means of three types of assessment, performed by two kinds of actors: professors and students (the last ones, by means of Self-Assessment and Peer to Peer Assessment). Once the Project Based Learning methodology has been implemented, it seems wise to find out the students’ perception of the subject. To do that, a questionnaire to assess motivation, based on MSLQ, was performed (on completion of the course), as well as a satisfaction survey (completed when students had attended half of the total class sessions). Results seem to confirm that the redesign has been effective, although some issues that should be adjusted in the next future were identified.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Stand-alone green twin for plant microbial fuel cell (PMFC) monitoring and optimization
In the current context of energy transition and sustainability, the need for natural systems capable of generating and managing their own energy is increasingly relevant. This work presents the development of a Green Twin, a digital replica integrated with real-time monitoring systems, to optimize the potential energy generation in a Plant Microbial Fuel Cell (PMFC). The system correlates environmental parameters such as soil moisture, temperature and light intensity, with the bioelectric output generated by a plant and the microbial activity in its rhizosphere. By leveraging environmental sensors and temporal data analysis, the system can identify the optimal conditions in which the PMFC achieves stable and sustainable energy production. A predictive model is established through the analysis of parameter correlations, temporal trends and behavioral rules, enabling the system to anticipate environmental variations and proactively adjust conditions to enhance bioelectrical conversion efficiency. This study proposes a stand-alone implementation of a Green Twin using a Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum (Thunb.) Jacques), integrated with an Internet of Everything (IoE) framework to continuously monitor plant status and power generation metrics. The proposed system contributes to the advancement of self-sustaining potential energy generation technologies, with potential applications in agricultural, remote monitoring or ecosystem preservation and conservation, aligning with emerging trends in green technology and ecofriendly electronics.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Wake-up radio with plant-microbial fuel cells power budget
This paper introduces a sustainable IoT framework combining Plant-Microbial Fuel Cells (P-MFCs) and wakeup radio technology within the EcoSentinel project. P-MFCs generate renewable energy from plant-soil-microbe interactions, while wake-up radios enable ultra-low-power communication, addressing energy constraints in environmental monitoring. We evaluate the energy harvested by P-MFCs and the power consumption of wake-up-enabled nodes, demonstrating the feasibility of a self-sustaining sensor network. A tailored communication protocol ensures reliable, event-driven data transmission with minimal energy use. Applications include climate monitoring, precision agriculture, and urban ecology. This work highlights a shift toward bio-integrated, carbon-negative IoT systems, offering eco-friendly solutions for global sustainability. Future efforts will focus on optimizing efficiency and expanding functionality in diverse environments.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
