Does reciprocal peer observation promote the transfer of learning to teaching practice?
This paper investigates whether Reciprocal Peer Observation is an effective practice for promoting Teacher Professional Development. It focuses on analysing the Improvement Goals transfer processes stemming from teachers' own educational approach, which teachers identify during Reciprocal Peer Observation. A total of 230 teachers, paired together, conducted a second classroom observation, focused on a specific Improvement Goals to assess the extent of their transfer. The findings indicate that Improvement Goals transfer to classroom practice occurs predominantly. The study analyses predictive and facilitating factors that contribute to this process. The results reveal that collaborative culture and collective agency are predictive factors for transfer. Similarly, personal factors arising from reflection and awareness of one's own practices, alongside the support of the partner, could promote the identified processes of improvement. In conclusion, Reciprocal Peer Observation can be regarded as a highly effective practice for identifying Improvement Goals and transferring them to the classroom, benefiting Teacher Professional Development.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Ultrasound-guided gluteal nerves electrical stimulation to enhance strength and power in individuals with chronic knee pain: a randomized controlled pilot trial
Introduction: Various pathophysiological contexts can be accompanied by weakness, arthrogenic muscle inhibition, and even disability. In this scenario, peripheral nerve stimulation has been studied not only for pain management but also for the improvement of neuromuscular parameters. For this purpose, the use of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) has typically been investigated, but recently, the use of ultrasound-guided percutaneous peripheral nerve stimulation (pPNS) has gained popularity. In this regard, electrical stimulation has a predisposition to activate Type II muscle fibers and has been shown to be capable of generating short-term potentiation by increasing calcium sensitivity. However, the evidence of pPNS applied in humans investigating such variables is rather limited.
Objectives: This pilot study aimed to assess the feasibility of the methodology and explore the potential of pPNS in enhancing hip extension performance in individuals suffering from knee pain, comparing it with TENS.
Methods: Twelve participants were divided into pPNS and TENS groups, undergoing pre- and post-intervention assessments of peak concentric power (W), strength (N), execution speed (m/s), and one-repetition maximum (1RM) (kg) estimation. For pPNS, two needles were positioned adjacent to the superior and inferior gluteal nerves under ultrasound guidance. For TENS, electrodes were positioned between the posterosuperior iliac spine and the ischial tuberosity, and halfway between the posterosuperior iliac spine and the greater trochanter. The interventions consisted of 10 stimulations of 10 s at a frequency of 10 Hz with a pulse width of 240 μs, with rest intervals of 10 s between stimulations.
Results: Peripheral nerve stimulation significantly improved concentric power at 30% (p = 0.03) and 50% (p = 0.03) of 1RM, surpassing TENS, which showed minimal changes. No significant strength differences were observed post-intervention in either group.
Conclusion: This work presents evidence where pPNS applied to the gluteal nerves results in an enhanced performance of hip extension at submaximal loads. However, this improvement does not seem to be reflected in short-term changes in the estimation of the 1RM by the force-velocity profile.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Global governance through voluntary sustainability standards: Developments, trends and challenges
Voluntary Sustainability Standards (VSS) are transnational governance instruments that can be leveraged to pursue sustainable development in global value chains. They have proliferated since the 1990s in terms of their number and the share of global production they govern. This paper shares some key insights arising from the considerable body of literature that has analysed the role of these instruments for sustainable production and trade. First, it introduces VSS, traces the evolution of their adoption and takes stock of the research on their sustainability impacts. Next, some major developments in the VSS realm are discussed, related to public policy and the emergence of national sustainability standards. The paper then zooms in on the challenges and limitations of VSS in transforming value chains towards sustainability, focusing on the shortcomings related to inclusiveness and the problems arising from their proliferation. The paper concludes by distilling recommendations on overcoming these challenges, especially in light of recent policy developments, and outlines what different stakeholders can do to make VSS more effective and inclusive instruments for sustainable value chains.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Sex- and site-specific associations of circulating lipocalin 2 and incident colorectal cancer: Results from the EPIC cohort
Experimental research has uncovered lipocalin 2 (LCN2) as a novel biomarker implicated in the modulation of intestinal inflammation, metabolic homeostasis, and colon carcinogenesis. However, evidence from human research has been scant. We, therefore, explored the association of pre-diagnostic circulating LCN2 concentrations with incident colorectal cancer (CRC) in a nested case–control study within the in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort. LCN2 was measured in 1267 incident CRC cases matched to 1267 controls using incidence density sampling. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) according to tumor subsite and sex. Weighted Cox proportional hazard regression was used to explore associations by adiposity status. In multivariable-adjusted analyses, the IRR [95% CI] per doubling in LCN2 concentration was 1.16 [0.98–1.37] for CRC overall, 1.26 [1.00–1.59] for colon cancer, and 1.08 [0.85–1.38] for rectal cancer. The association for colon cancer was more pronounced in women (IRR [95% CI], 1.66 [1.20–2.30]) and for proximal colon cancer (IRR [95% CI], 1.96 [1.15–3.34]), whereas no association was seen in men and distal colon cancer. The association for colon cancer was positive in individuals with high waist circumference (hazard ratio [95% CI], 1.69 [1.52–1.88]) and inverse in individuals with low waist circumference (hazard ratio [95% CI], 0.86 [0.76–0.98], P interaction<0.01). Overall, these data suggest that pre-diagnostic LCN2 concentrations were positively associated with colon cancer, particularly occurring in the proximal colon, in women and among individuals with abdominal adiposity.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Perception and expectations of communication professionals before and after the Covid-19 pandemic
The communication sector has undergone a major transformation in the recent past. in this article, we present the results of annual surveys with an accumulated sample (n = 1.775) which were carried out consecutively between 2018 and 2021 among professionals in the communication field in Catalonia. This study aims to determine the perceptions and expectations of the professionals and, in particular, the opinions of workers with management responsibilities regarding the future of their companies and the sector in general, as well as to evaluate the impact of the Covid-19 crisis. The results show how the pandemic and the severity of the current socioeconomic situation have effectively affected the sector. However, it is clear that it has withstood the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic better than other areas, among other reasons because, prior to the crisis, it had carried out the digital transition and initiated a substantial change in its business model.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Sonic sensations: Navigating the mixed outcomes of ASMR in retail advertising
This paper investigates the influence of Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) elements in advertising on consumer attitudes. Through three experimental studies, we assess the impact of ASMR on attitudes toward ads and brands across hedonic and utilitarian product categories, and for known and unknown brands. Our findings reveal a generally negative effect of ASMR on ad attitudes among the wider population but identify a positive impact among those who experience ASMR's physiological sensations, as serially mediated through physiological and emotional responses. Notably, negative brand attitudes were observed only with unknown brands. This research underscores the nuanced role of ASMR in advertising, highlighting the potential for positive effects within a specific consumer segment, while cautioning against its broader application.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Criteria definition for digital requirements using hesitant fuzzy linguistic terms sets: an application to the automotive industry
Managing a portfolio of digital products is challenging, particularly in a context of limited economic resources and workforce. Therefore, prioritization of activities and new developments is crucial. In Software Development environment, almost all well-known prioritization techniques are based on experts’ knowledge and opinion, leaving little room for a data-driven, objective approach. In this paper, we propose a methodology that adopts the Delphi framework and Hesitant Fuzzy Linguistic Term Sets for collecting experts’ opinions, evaluating perceived importance, and computing group consensus. The objective is to provide a framework to define a group-consensual set of relevant criteria that would represent the basis for a data-driven prioritization process for digital requirements. Implementation and results from a real case application in a European automotive company are presented to understand the relevance of criteria and suggest their inclusion or exclusion for prioritization purposes.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
