Needs of Families of Individuals with Serious Mental Illness in Psychosocial Rehabilitation: A Focus Group-Based Qualitative Study

    Get PDF
Objective: To explore the needs of families of individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) within the context of a public psychosocial rehabilitation service (PSR). A second aim was to identify and propose strategies to enhance family engagement and improve the effectiveness of family intervention programs. Methods: Qualitative study involving three focus groups: 1) service users (i.e., individuals with SMI), 2) family members, and 3) professionals (nursing/social work). A fourth group consisted of experts in the field of psychosocial rehabilitation (psychologists/psychiatrists) interpreted the results. A thematic analysis approach was used to evaluate the data. Results: Family members expressed needs in the following areas: space for emotional expression; adjustment of expectations; communication; support; sexuality; management of family secrets; and acceptance of the mental health condition. Family members also reported a need for more information, assistance in dealing with stigma, and more support to foster autonomy. In many cases, the groups found it difficult to identify the needs of the other groups. Overall, the results reveal the important burden facing the family. Conclusions and implications for practice: The findings of this exploratory study suggest that more tailored interventions are needed to better address the emotional and practical needs of families of individuals with SMI. We propose several changes to improve intervention programs, including therapeutic approaches specifically designed to address the needs identified in this study and new strategies to improve treatment engagement. If implemented, these proposed changes could improve treatment outcomes in this clinical population. In future studies, we recommend using larger, more diverse samples to test the current results.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Publication Delay and Article Citation: Evidence from Accounting

    Get PDF
This study performs an empirical analysis on the relationship between article publication delay and its future citations. We use a sample from top accounting journals, employ multivariate regression analysis, and results reveal an overall negative relationship between article publication delay and future citations. Additionally, we identify a U-shaped relationship; negativity is associated with the lower 87.5% of the distribution range of publication delay, while positivity is observed for the upper 12.5%. According to our findings, enhancing article citation through the review procedure appears unfeasible. Therefore, the review process should prioritize the detection and rejection of low-quality manuscripts. It should also adopt a more flexible, less demanding approach and expedite the acceptance of the remaining manuscripts. The current practice of subjecting submitted manuscripts to stringent and detailed requirements in accounting journals results in prolonged reviews, causing significant publication delays and subsequently lower citations, likely stemming from a loss of relevance or quality.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

To examine literacy learning in bilingual contexts, this study assessed phonological processing skills in a sample of bilingual students, both with and without dyslexia. It also aimed to determine whether the stage of literacy acquisition affects phonological skills in bilingual children with and without dyslexia. The participants were 113 Catalan/Spanish bilinguals, aged 8 to 14 years, attending middle and upper primary school, as well as early secondary school. This transversal study assessed accuracy in the following phonological processing skills: phonological awareness (using phonemic awareness tests), phonological decoding (through a pseudo-word reading task), and phonological memory (using a pseudo-word repetition task). Overall, the results showed differences between students with and without dyslexia across all tasks, but no differences were found between the two languages studied. Results by educational stage revealed that differences in the phonemic awareness task diminished with age, while differences in pseudo-word reading persisted. Additionally, differences were observed among middle and secondary school participants without dyslexia, with better accuracy in the phonemic awareness task in Spanish. The results are discussed in relation to previous studies and the transparency and opacity of the languages involved.

Algorithmic isomorphism: The implications of artificial intelligence for organizational structures

    Get PDF
We theorize artificial intelligence as a novel form of technology that produces new knowledge and encourages the automation of decision-making across multiple fields. The increasing use of AI has led to new institutional processes across organizations. The processes leading to these new organizational structures are distinct from the human-led co-evolution of institutions brought about by the adoption of industrial and information technologies. Because AI changes the way knowledge is accumulated – through deep learning rather than through humans –it will encourage a new form of institutionalism we term as algorithmic isomorphism. Thedemocratization of access to this technology and the ability of AI to generate knowledge isolated from human actors is bringing about the homogeneity of organizational behavior that is primarily determined by dispersed algorithms and big data. We define algorithmic isomorphism as the institutional process wherein organizational forms are determined by deep learning algorithms rather than by human agency. These algorithms will lead to AI-centered organizations where data becomes the primary driver of competitive advantage and organizational decision-making will be subject to data-centric technological logic rather than human cognition-based rationality. We conclude with managerial and societal implications pertaining to decision-making, accountability, and regulation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Polymeric nanoparticles for liver-targeted pituitary tumor-transforming gene 1 silencing in rats with chronic liver disease

    Get PDF
Pituitary tumor transforming gene 1 (Pttg1) is upregulated in cirrhosis and hepatocarcinoma (HCC). We assessed the therapeutic effect of liver-targeted Pttg1 siRNA Retinol (Ret) pBAE nanoparticles (NPs) to treat these disturbances. Fibrosis was induced in Wistar rats by carbon tetrachloride inhalation and HCC by diethylnitrosamine injection. Ret pBAE NPs accumulated in hepatic tissue, close to zones positive for αSMA staining. Pttg1 interference increased mean arterial pressure, reduced portal hypertension and decreased collagen accumulation and inflammatory infiltrate in fibrotic rats. In HCC rats, Pttg1 silencing reduced liver to body weight ratio and hepatic proliferation and increased hepatic ATP production and serum glucose. This therapy effectively mitigated liver fibrosis and HCC progression in experimental models. The feasibility of this treatment was also demonstrated in human derived hepatic stellate cells and in ex vivo human cirrhotic livers underscoring the therapeutic potential of Pttg1 siRNA Ret pBAE NPs in addressing liver fibrosis and HCC.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Aproximación a una ética de la justicia restaurativa

    Get PDF

DEArt: Building and evaluating a dataset for object detection and pose classification for European art

    Get PDF
Annotation of cultural heritage artefacts allows finding and exploration of items relevant to user needs, supports functionality such as question answering or scene understanding, and in general facilitates the exposure of the society to our history and heritage. But most artefacts lack a description of their visual content due to the assumption that one sees the object; this often means that the annotations effort focuses on the historical and artistic context, information about the painter, or details about the execution and medium. Without a significant body of visual content annotation, machines cannot integrate all this data to allow further analysis, query and inference, and cultural institutions cannot offer advanced functionality to their users and visitors. Given how time-consuming manual annotation is, and to enable the development of new technology and applications for cultural heritage, we have provided through DEArt the most extensive art dataset for object detection and pose classification to date. The current paper extends this work in several ways: (1) we introduce an approach for generating refined object and relationship labels without the need for manual annotations, (2) we compare the performance of our models with the most relevant state-of-the-art in both computer vision and cultural heritage, (3) we evaluate the annotations generated by our object detection model from a user viewpoint, for both correctness and relevance, and (4) we briefly discuss the fairness of our dataset.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Cluster and Kill: the Use of Clustering-Triggered Emission Materials for Singlet Oxygen Photosensitization in Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy

    Get PDF
The emergence of light-based technologies is revolutionizing modern medicine and healthcare by enabling precise disease diagnosis and treatment through various luminescent agents and imaging techniques. Despite challenges like biocompatibility, spectral tuning, and synthesis complexity, the primary issue is the aggregation-caused quenching of emission on high concentrations or physiological conditions. In light of these problems, Clustering-Triggered Emission (CTE), which involves the formation of atomic clusters to induce light absorption and the luminescence of unconventional chromophores, represents an all-in-one solution to the challenges identified. Given the potential for CTE materials to behave in ways previously only associated with conventional chromophores, it seems reasonable that highly oxidative reactive oxygen species can be formed from CTE excited states. The results demonstrate that it is possible to transfer the excess energy from the CTE long-lived excited states to molecular oxygen, thereby producing singlet oxygen. It is also noteworthy that over 99.9% of Staphylococcus aureus cells can be eradicated using fluences comparable to those used in traditional systems under violet light irradiation. Uncovering these photophysical properties of CTE opens the door to a revolutionary breakthrough that can disrupt conventional photodynamic therapy and usher in a new era of CTE-based photosensitizers.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
