Updated measurement of CP violation and polarisation in Bs0→J/ψK¯∗8920 decays

    Get PDF
A time-integrated angular analysis of the decay Bs0→J/ψK¯∗8920, with J/ψ → μ+μ− and K¯∗8920→K−π+, is presented. The analysis employs a sample of proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment during 2015–2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb−1. A simultaneous maximum-likelihood fit is performed to the angular distributions in bins of the K−π+ mass. This fit yields measurements of the CP-averaged polarisation fractions and CP asymmetries for the P-wave component of the K−π+ system. The longitudinal and parallel polarisation fractions are determined to be f0 = 0.534 ± 0.012 ± 0.009 and f|| = 0.211 ± 0.014 ± 0.005, respectively, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The CP asymmetries are measured with 3–7% precision and are found to be consistent with zero. These measurements, along with an updated determination of the branching fraction relative to the B0 → J/ψK*0 decay, are combined with previous LHCb results, providing the most precise values for these observables to date.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Novel zwitterionic densely charged neutral sulfobetaine polymeric micelles for oral delivery of therapeutic peptides: a proof-of-concept study

    Get PDF
Densely charged but neutral sulfobetaine polymeric micelles (PMs) were designed with the aim of efficiently permeating the intestinal mucus and releasing the intact peptide cargo close to the intestinal epithelial surface. Using RAFT chemistry, butyl methacrylate and dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate copolymers were synthesised and then reacted with propane sultone to form amphiphilic block copolymers comprising hydrophilic zwitterionic sulfobetaine and lipophilic butyl methacrylate (BMA). Small (diameter <50 nm), spherical BMA–sulfobetaine PMs with a near neutral surface charge potential and loaded with a model peptide cargo, the GLP1-agonist peptide exenatide, were then formed by nanoprecipitation. In vitro peptide release studies from the PMs showed that less than 0.9% of the peptide load was released within the first 2 h (i.e. there was no ‘burst’ effect), with the release unaffected by highly acidic conditions. Thereafter, a sustained release was evident with 43% of the peptide load released in 24 h. In vitro screening (cytotoxicity assay) showed that the PMs did not cause loss of epithelial cell viability. Multiple particle tracking showed that the PMs were very highly permeant through the intestinal mucus. An in vivo non-clinical rodent pharmacokinetic study demonstrated the oral delivery of the exenatide-loaded PMs to achieve an extent of peptide bioavailability of 13% relative to subcutaneous (s.c.) exenatide solution injection. A pharmacodynamic study showed the efficacy of the oral exenatide-loaded PMs with significant reductions in blood glucose following a glucose challenge test. In conclusion, a novel family of sulfobetaine PMs have been demonstrated as stable carriers, efficiently permeating the intestinal mucus and with the potential for exploitation in the oral delivery of therapeutic peptides.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Automated tool for cylindrical glass container blow and blow mold design

    Get PDF
The manufacture of perfumery bottles using the blow-and-blow technique necessitates iterative design and production of intermediate or preparation molds to achieve an appropriate thickness distribution. Designers seek a specific glass thickness at the bottle's bottom as an indicator of quality while ensuring a minimum thickness in the rest of the bottle, particularly the neck, to withstand vertical compressive loads during bottle filling. One cost-reduction strategy involves the use of finite element simulations; however, this technique demands significant engineering time and validation efforts. This study proposes a novel method for designing cylindrical bottles, facilitating the automated generation of preparation mold geometries for manufacturing. Key findings include the successful parameter-based analysis accounting for container capacity, mass, and height-to-diameter aspect ratio which was experimentally validated across several container sizes against traditional experimental iterations. Validation tests demonstrated that the automatically generated geometries yield functional bottle designs capable of withstanding compressive loads. The primary advantage of this approach lies in a substantial reduction in development time, from 32.9 to 18.3 days, providing a significant competitive edge. However, the current methodology is applicable to only 6% of the bottles in the production range. Expanding its applicability will require further database analysis to incorporate additional parameters for other bottle geometries. This limitation underscores the potential for continued refinement and broader industrial adoption.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Optimizing Reservoir Separability in Liquid State Machines for Spatio-Temporal Classification in Neuromorphic Hardware

    Get PDF
In this paper, we propose an optimization approach using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to enhance reservoir separability in Liquid State Machines (LSMs) for spatio-temporal classification in neuromorphic systems. By leveraging PSO, our method fine-tunes reservoir parameters, neuron dynamics, and connectivity patterns, maximizing separability while aligning with the resource constraints typical of neuromorphic hardware. This approach was validated in both software (NEST) and on neuromorphic hardware (SpiNNaker), demonstrating notable results in terms of accuracy and low energy consumption when using SpiNNaker. Specifically, our approach addresses two problems: Frequency Recognition (FR) with five classes and Pattern Recognition (PR) with four, eight, and twelve classes. For instance, in the Mono-objective approach running in NEST, accuracies ranged from 81.09% to 95.52% across the benchmarks under study. The Multi-objective approach outperformed the Mono-objective approach, delivering accuracies ranging from 90.23% to 98.77%, demonstrating its superior scalability for LSM implementations. On the SpiNNaker platform, the mono-objective approach achieved accuracies ranging from 86.20% to 97.70% across the same benchmarks, with the Multi-objective approach further improving accuracies, ranging from 94.42% to 99.52%. These results show that, in addition to slight accuracy improvements, hardware-based implementations offer superior energy efficiency with a lower execution time. For example, SpiNNaker operates at around 1–5 watts per chip, while traditional systems can require 50–100 watts for similar tasks, highlighting the significant energy savings of neuromorphic hardware. These results underscore the scalability and effectiveness of PSO-optimized LSMs on resource-limited neuromorphic platforms, showcasing both improved classification performance and the advantages of energy-efficient processing.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Residents’ values: Co-designing social housing retrofit

    Get PDF
Residents’ values in social housing retrofit extend beyond energy efficiency targets to encompass complex social and physical considerations, shaping their acceptance and experience of interventions. These values appear to influence retrofit success yet are often overlooked in policy and practice that prioritise technical performance. This paper investigates what residents value in social housing retrofit through a focus group method with the Sutton Estate in London, combining institutional stakeholder (housing association and architect) and resident perspectives. Content analysis of focus group questionnaires, discussions, and consensus-building activities revealed four key resident values: (1) good stakeholder relationships, emphasising trust-building through personal connections; (2) access to information, requiring clear, continuous communication through multiple channels; (3) comfort, health, and safety, integrating physical and mental wellbeing; and (4) building and community longevity, focusing on preserving building character and social sustainability. The findings suggest that social housing retrofit may benefit from a holistic approach integrating residents’ values throughout the project lifecycle, addressing the social, physical, and long-term sustainability of homes and communities. The findings highlight the importance for housing associations, architects, and policymakers to consider residents’ values when developing retrofit strategies, balancing technical requirements with residents’ needs and priorities.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
