Analysis of the relationship between ESG and labor costs: the moderating effect of the legal tradition
This study examines the relationship between Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) scores and labor costs per employee (LCE) in firms operating under different legal traditions, specifically comparing civil law (France) and common law (United Kingdom) countries. Utilizing data from the Orbis database for the period 2020–2022, the study employs random-effects estimations with robust standard errors. Results indicate that while the relationship between ESG and LCE is not significant in common law, it is positively significant in civil law. Results are robust to alternative ESG measures, such as the social pillar score (SOCP) estimations methods and samples. The findings suggest that the legal tradition moderates the ESG-LCE relationship, with stronger positive effects observed in civil law countries. The study highlights the importance of legal frameworks in shaping the economic impacts of ESG initiatives on labor costs. While ESG concerns may result in higher LCE, and thus increased employee compensation, implementing appropriate regulations to protect workers’ rights can foster a more effective ESG-LCE relationship than relying solely on market-based regulatory systems driven by stakeholder influence.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The pitfalls of co-creation: reflections from Health CASCADE facilitators on critical events, consequences and preventive and mitigating strategies
Objectives
Co-creation is increasingly applied in public health research, particularly to develop solutions. Due to the unpredictable and ‘messy’ nature of co-creation, co-creation processes often do not go as planned. To inform facilitators of co-creation research, we aimed to identify critical events in planning, conducting, evaluating and reporting of co-creation and to provide strategies to prevent or mitigate them, by reflecting on co-creation projects within the Health CASCADE project.
Study design
Qualitative study design.
Methods
Online or in-person reflection sessions were held with facilitators of six co-creation projects, across various sectors, in different populations, and addressing diverse topics. Facilitators were asked to reflect on critical events in their project that could have negatively impacted the co-creators, the co-creation process, or the co-created solution, and to identify preventive and mitigating measures. Two researchers analysed meeting summaries using inductive thematic analysis.
Results
We identified 16 overarching themes, representing critical events from planning to reporting, including not recruiting the 'right' participants, low engagement, lack of motivation for implementation, and biased evaluations. These can result in insufficient inclusion of diverse opinions and reduced co-creation time, which in turn can lead to less effective solutions and lack of trust in co-creation. We identified various preventive (e.g., scheduling reflection meetings beforehand) and mitigating (e.g., having a co-facilitator in case of difficulties) strategies.
Conclusions
The results highlight the crucial role of facilitators in making co-creation an effective approach in public health. Allocating ample time for facilitator training beforehand and ongoing reflection during the co-creation project is essential.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Risk management approaches in sports organisations: A scoping review
Risk management has emerged as a critical focus area in sports organisations due to the
increasing complexity of operations, governance challenges, and unexpected events such as the
COVID-19 pandemic. These organisations face a wide range of risks, including financial instability, legal liabilities and operational disruptions, among others. Effective risk management,
which involves identifying, assessing, and mitigating potential threats to an organisation’s objectives, is critical for ensuring their resilience and long-term sustainability. A comprehensive
understanding of the current state of risk management in this context is vital for the development
of strategies that address these multifaceted challenges.
The objectives of this scoping review are to examine how risk management has been
approached in sports organisations, categorize the different types of risks studied in the literature,
and identify gaps in knowledge that could inform future research. A carefully structured fivephase methodology was applied: research questions were defined, an extensive literature
search was conducted, relevant studies were identified using strict inclusion criteria, data was
charted, and the results were summarized. From an initial pool of 3786 articles published between 1980 and 2023, a total of 125 studies were selected for detailed analysis.
The findings reveal a broad spectrum of risks explored in the literature, with a significant
emphasis on operational challenges. Studies frequently address the impact of the COVID-19
pandemic, risk categorisation, health and safety protocols, and the competencies needed within
sports organisations to effectively manage these risks. Moreover, financial and governance risks
are identified as potential gaps in the existing literature, suggesting a need for further exploration
and detailed investigation. The review underscores the diversity of methodologies employed,
although empirical research, particularly quantitative approaches, remains predominant.
In conclusion, this review highlights the need for more multidimensional approaches to risk
management that integrate various aspects such as governance, financial stability, and operational efficiency.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Quantum-assisted trustworthiness for the Quantum Internet
Device redundancy is one of the most well-known mechanisms in distributed systems to
increase the overall system fault tolerance and, consequently, trustworthiness. Existing
algorithms in this regard aim to exchange a significant number of messages among nodes
to identify and agree which communication links or nodes are faulty. This approach greatly
degrades the performance of those wireless communication networks exposed to limited
available bandwidth and/or energy consumption due to messages flooding. Lately,
quantum-assisted mechanisms have been envisaged as an appealing alternative to
improve the performance in this kind of communication networks and have been shown to
obtain levels of performance close to the ones achieved in ideal conditions. The purpose
of this paper is to further explore this approach by using super-additivity and superposed
quantum trajectories in quantum Internet to obtain a higher system trustworthiness. More
specifically, the wireless communication network that supports the permafrost telemetry
service for the Antarctica together with five operational modes (three of them using classical techniques and two of them using quantum-assisted mechanisms) have been simulated. Obtained results show that the new quantum-assisted mechanisms can increase
the system performance by up to a 28%.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Integration of Global Citizenship Education (GCE) in Universities: A Comparative Assessment of the Integration of GCE in Universitat de Barcelona (UB) and Universitat de Girona (UdG)
TFG del Grau en Relacions Internacionals tutoritzat per Oscar MateosIn the context of globalization, Global Citizenship Education (GCE) has emerged as a tool to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to adapt and transform the current dynamics. In this regard, a comparative study of the transversal integration of GCE in Catalan universities is conducted. Adopting a constructivist lens and a qualitative methodology, the analysis focuses on the GCE integration in the teaching dimension of UB and UdG, tackling the universities’ teaching models, professor training, and two degree programs of each. The research concludes that there is a high level of integration of GCE in both the teaching model and the degree programs selected, and a low integration level in the training of university professors. Therefore, although GCE is in the agenda of the selected universities at the institutional level, the research calls for higher integration in the training of university professors, and across disciplines
A Scathing Indictment: How European Opinion Leaders Framed Putin’s Aggression Against Ukraine
Putin’s Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula in 2014 and launched a massive invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This study is predicated on framing theory, which posits that the media contribute to the creation of individuals’ perceived reality. We analyzed how the European press presented Russian President Vladimir Putin during both episodes. Content analysis was used to examine a sample of 1009 opinion articles and editorials published in two leading newspapers in each of the five largest European economies. Subsequently, we quantified the frequency of the predominant frames as well as the tone (positive, neutral, or negative) the articles struck towards Putin. The results show that many more articles were published in 2022 than in 2014, and that the degree of negative views of Putin is also more pronounced in 2022. In both instances, historical motives were most often employed to frame Putin’s actions, such as Putin’s urge to reassert Russian influence in the former Soviet space and his reaction to the alleged lack of recognition of Russia as a superpower.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
European research Priorities for Osteopathic Care (PROCare): a sequential exploratory investigation and survey
Objectives The aim of this study is to identify and analyse research priorities across the osteopathic profession internationally, to determine how different interested parties conceptualise research importance and to examine how contextual factors influence research prioritisation.
Design A mixed methods sequential exploratory design combining an umbrella review, a thematic analysis, an expert consensus agreement and an international cross-sectional survey was used to define, validate and evaluate research priorities.
Setting An international online survey, available in nine languages, was distributed through professional osteopathic organisations and network worldwide, a patient representative organisation and social media.
Participants 2229 respondents including patients (7.4%), practitioners (42.1%), students (17.4%), educators (13.5%), researchers (5.0%) and policy makers (4.3%) from across 42 countries.
Primary and secondary outcome measures Primary outcomes were interested party’s conceptualisation of research importance and validation of the priorities in Research for Osteopathic Care (PROCare) framework. Secondary outcomes included current research priorities across interested parties groups and influence of contextual factors on prioritisation.
Results Three distinct approaches to priority-setting emerged: conservative (42.9%), sceptic (20.2%) and enthusiast (36.9%). Organising research priorities as a construct built from domains and subdomains was shown to be internally valid (Cronbach’s α=0.911). ‘Patient safety’ (nominated by 82% of relevant countries) and ‘physical activities and mobility’ (51.0%) were the most prioritised subdomains. ‘Digital health’ ranked lowest (28th of 28 subdomains). Significant geographic variations were observed mainly for the overall importance to most research domains. Strong consensus emerged around core priorities including patient safety, physical activity promotion and understanding treatment mechanisms.
Conclusions The PROCare framework provides a validated structure for evaluating osteopathic research priorities across diverse interested parties. While geographic variations exist in priority emphasis, fundamental agreement on key research domains suggests potential for internationally coordinated research strategies. Future work should focus on developing mechanisms to ensure balanced representation of conservative, sceptic and enthusiast perspectives in research planning.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Search for charge-parity violation in semileptonically tagged D0→ K+π− decays
An analysis of the flavour oscillations of the charmed neutral meson is presented. The ratio of D0 → K+π− and D0 → K−π+ decay rates is measured as a function of the decay time of the D0 meson and compared with the charge-conjugated system to search for charge-parity violation. The meson flavour at production is double-tagged by the charges of the muon and pion in the preceding B¯→D∗2010+μ−X and D∗(2010)+ → D0π+ decays, respectively. These decays are selected from proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−1. The flavour oscillation parameters, relating to the differences in mass and width of the mass eigenstates, are found to be y′ = (5.8 ± 1.6) × 10−3 and (x′)2 = (0.0 ± 1.2) × 10−4. No evidence for charge-parity violation is seen either in the flavour oscillations or in the decay, where the direct charge-parity asymmetry is measured to be AD = (2.3 ± 1.7) %.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
