The paradox of ontological security in far-right narratives and the securitization of identified alterities: the cases of Spain and Italy
Get PDFNationalistic far-right discourse promises to restore and defend the nation against identified alterities, which they blame for a supposed lost “national authenticity.” An analysis of the paradoxical claims of the Italian and Spanish far-right parties in 2022 and 2023 examines how discourses of ontological insecurities are presented as threats posed by alterities to national majorities. The article claims that sometimes these discourses are mixed with securitization moves, but at times there is evident separation between the two processes. Among what the far-right identifies as alterities, political and cultural adversaries are blamed for national ontological insecurity: the US liberal system, religious minorities, the EU, and migration. The findings illustrate that the far-right uses a catch-all strategy on all these themes through the usage of paradoxical claims in their discourse. Through the analysis, it becomes evident that the scapegoating of alterities is crucial to identify when ontological insecurity is indeed connected to the spiraling of the securitization process and particularly to how it allows the far-right to prosper.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
From mold to mill: StachCel5, a novel thermoalkaliphilic endoglucanase from Stachybotrys chartarum for pulp fiber biorefining
Get PDFStachCel5, a novel endo-β-1,4-glucanase from Stachybotrys chartarum IBT 7711, was identified through genome mining and exhibited 65 % sequence identity with known glycoside hydrolase family 5 (GH5) cellulases. The gene was codon-optimized, excluding its native signal peptide, and heterologously expressed in Komagataella phaffii under the control of constitutive glyceraldehye-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAP) promoter. The purified enzyme displayed a high specific activity of 287.6 U/mg on carboxymethyl cellulose (Na-CMC), retained over 87 % activity across pH 4–7, and maintained 77 % residual activity after 60 min at 50 °C. Structural modeling predicted a canonical (β/α)₈ TIM-barrel fold, with Glu228 and Glu335 as conserved catalytic residues. Application trials on industrial hardwood and softwood pulps demonstrated that enzymatic pre-treatment with StachCel5 enhanced fiber fibrillation, reduced refining energy, and improved mechanical properties. In softwood pulp, the enzyme enabled equivalent tensile strength (67.8 Nm/g) as untreated controls with 25 % fewer refining revolutions (4500 vs 6000), reflecting significant energy savings. Improved tensile and burst indices, and preserved fiber integrity (zero-span tensile index) confirm the biorefining potential of StachCel5. These results establish StachCel5 as a thermostable and pH-tolerant biocatalyst suitable for enzymatic fiber modification in pulp and paper processing under industrially relevant conditions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

This review provides an overview and analysis of the high-quality in vivo chemical probes for protein kinases published and deposited at the Chemical Probes Portal in the year 2024. We discuss the design strategies, molecular mechanism of action, details of their use in vitro and in vivo, as well as their application in target (in)validation. Filling the gap in K-12 data literacy competence assessment: Design and initial validation of a questionnaire
Get PDFAs the integration of AI-powered technologies in education grows, data literacy has become a key competence for educators, shaping their ability to navigate and utilize vast amounts of educational data. This study details the development of the Educators Data Literacy Self-Assessment (EDLSA), a questionnaire designed to assess perceived data literacy among K-12 teachers, focusing on its behavioural implications. The development of the EDLSA was rigorous. It involved an exhaustive qualitative review of frameworks and a pilot test in a teachers' Spanish sample (n = 66) provided relevant insights for refining the instrument. Finally, we conducted a comprehensive statistical analysis, which confirmed the instrument's robust reliability (α = 0.976) in measuring teachers' data management competence. The results of the factorial analysis in piloting primary and secondary education samples led to the readjustment of the proposed dimensions into three categories: comprehensive educational analytics, educational problem-solving through data, and promoting meta-learning students through data and ethical implications. Stemmed from the assessed competencies, the EDLSA instrument provides a comprehensive understanding of the human-computer interaction over data in educational settings. What is a healthy dating relationship and what helps it get there? Perceptions of Chilean adolescents from a gender and inclusivity perspective

positive or a negative impact on a child’s or adolescent’s development, thus
understanding the traits of healthy dating relationships may benefit wellbeing
during this period of life and into adulthood.
Methods: In this transversal study, a sample of 65 adolescents between 10 and 19
years of age were recruited from schools in Araucanía and metropolitan regions
of Chile during 2023, and they were distributed into 10 focus groups stratified by
gender and age. A qualitative methodology with a phenomenological approach
was used. Content análisis was performed stratified by age group (10–14 years,
15–19 years) and gender identity.
Results: Information was obtained from adolescents about what they
considered a healthy relationship, making distinctions between dierent types
of unhealthy relationships and capturing subtleties about what they considered
protective and risk factors. The adolescents were not more consumers of
information; they required commitment and support in their development
processes.
Discussion: Listening to their own voice could help generate solutions that made
more sense to them. In the view of an adolescent, the formation of romantic
couples was a fundamental and important issue that should be considered
in public policies that promote health and prevent dating violence and its

No full textUn grup de treball interdisciplinari convocat per la Càtedra Ethos de la Universitat Ramon Llull i pel Grup Mémora proposa aquesta Guia de bones pràctiques a fi i efecte de pacificar el procés de final de vida de les persones. L’objectiu d’aquest document és oferir un conjunt d’orientacions per tal que el procés de final de vida sigui el més serè i assossegat possible. Constatem que, en el nostre entorn social i cultural, la mort segueix essent un tabú per a la ciutadania, la qual cosa no facilita l’afrontament ni la pacificació del procés de final de vida. També constatem que moltes persones moren soles i angoixades als seus domicilis o bé en espais impersonals i anònims.
Entenent que la pacificació és sempre un valor relatiu als contextos i les circumstàncies en què s’esdevé la mort, les pautes exposades en aquesta guia poden ajudar a assolir processos de més qualitat assistencial i humana. L’objectiu és fomentar una sexualitat saludable i lliure de violències, basada en el respecte als drets sexuals i reproductius.
