    La mandra

    No full text

Computational thinking and educational robotics integrated into project-based learning

    No full text
In the context of the science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics disciplines in education, subjects tend to use contextualized activities or projects. Educational robotics and computational thinking both have the potential to become subjects in their own right, though not all educational programs yet offer these. Despite the use of technology and programming platforms being widespread, it is not common practice to integrate computational thinking and educational robotics into the official curriculum in secondary education. That is why this paper continues an initial project of integrating computational thinking and educational robotics into a secondary school in Barcelona, Spain. This study presents a project-based learning approach where the main focus is the development of skills related to science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics and the acquisition of computational thinking knowledge in the second year of pupils’ studies using a block-based programming environment. The study develops several sessions in the context of project-based learning, with students using the block-programming platform ScratchTM. During these sessions and in small-group workshops, students will expand their knowledge of computational thinking and develop 21st-century skills. We demonstrate the superior improvement of these concepts and skills compared to other educational methodologies.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Educational warehouse: modular, private and secure cloudable architecture system for educational data storage, analysis and acces

    No full text
Data in the educational context are becoming increasingly important in decision-making and teaching-learning processes. Similar to the industrial context, educational institutions are adopting data-processing technologies at all levels. To achieve representative results, the processes of extraction, transformation and uploading of educational data should be ubiquitous because, without useful data, either internal or external, it is difficult to perform a proper analysis and to obtain unbiased educational results. It should be noted that the source and type of data are heterogeneous and that the analytical processes can be so diverse that it opens up a practical problem of management and access to the data generated. At the same time, ensuring the privacy, identity, confidentiality and security of students and their data is a “sine qua non” condition for complying with the legal issues involved while achieving the required ethical premises. This work proposes a modular and scalable data system architecture that solves the complexity of data management and access. On the one hand, it allows educational institutions to collect any data generated in both the teaching-learning and management processes. On the other hand, it will enable external access to this data under appropriate privacy and security conditions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    No full text

    No full text
This paper describes an educational experience using augmented reality (AR) on mobile devices as a tool for learning urban design concepts and specifically for architecture degree students. In a real project-based exercise, the participants had to design a sculpture to be placed in a public space, checking the suitability of the object as for example the form, scale, location, materials, etc., and taking into account the surroundings. The project is controlled on-site using AR on mobile platforms, encouraging collaborative learning by sharing the 3D models of their proposals, and acting both as producers and consumers of AR content in the process. To assess both the usability of technology, as well as the learning improvement, the class was divided into two groups with equivalent pre-course grades: a control group, who followed the conventional course in the laboratory, and a test group, who used AR technology. At the end of the course, the AR-using group showed a significant increase in academic performance, higher motivation and satisfaction compared to the control group.

Areas of innovation in cities: the evolution of 22@Barcelona

    No full text
Areas of innovation (AOIs) are on the agenda of urban planners in the revitalisation of inner cities. The knowledge-based economy provides the opportunity to base these revitalisation efforts in creating AOIs as an evolution of the old industrial districts. Grounded in key conceptual frameworks in this research field - triple helix model, knowledge-based urban development paradigm, clusters of innovation framework, co-evolutionary theory, learning region theory and lifecycle of a new venture - as a reference, this work contributes to the existing literature by proposing a comprehensive model for the evolution of AOIs from inception to maturity. Using a case research study approach, the 22@Barcelona case, an AOI that transformed an old industrial district into a knowledge-based one, allows to analyse its evolution and to elaborate a model. Academic value stems from a new theorising effort of the evolution of AOIs. Urban planners benefit by getting additional clues in the revitalisation of cities.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Research with children from a pre-service teachers’

    No full text
In the globally present evidence-driven view of education, practitioners are expected to carry out more and better research. Good quality research requires good quality data, and how to obtain these data when children are involved needs to be carefully considered, especially in a Teacher Education context. The aim of this article is to identify which research strategies are mostly followed by pre-service teachers in two Education degrees at the School of Psychology, Education and Sports Sciences Blanquerna (Universitat Ramon Llull) when collecting data for their Undergraduate Dissertation. This is a longitudinal and descriptive study following a mixed approach. The main findings indicate that the active participation of children in pre-service teachers’ research is quite limited and, based on this, suggestions to improve provision are made. The final aim is to align pre-service teachers’ research practices with the educational view based on acknowledging children as capable learners.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

An antibody-photosensitiser bioconjugate overcomes trastuzumab resistance in HER2-positive breast cancer

    No full text
HER2-positive breast cancer, characterized by the overexpression of HER2 receptors, often develops resistance to trastuzumab, limiting its therapeutic efficacy. In this study, we explore the use of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with a trastuzumab-IRDye700DX photoimmunoconjugate (Tz-IR700) as a strategy to overcome trastuzumab resistance. Tz-IR700 combines the antibody's selectivity for the tumoral cells with the cytotoxic effect of IR700, induced by red light. Our results demonstrate that Tz-IR700 selectively accumulates in trastuzumab-resistant HER2-positive tumours (HCC1954) thereby enabling precise tumour localization by fluorescence imaging. Upon irradiation with red light, Tz-IR700 induces significant HCC1954 cell viability reduction both in vitro and in vivo, notably overcoming trastuzumab resistance in this HER2-positive breast cancer cell line. Mechanistic studies unequivocally demonstrate that the primary cytotoxic species is singlet oxygen. These findings suggest that Tz-IR700 could serve as a valuable treatment option for trastuzumab-resistant HER2-positive breast cancer and may also be used as an adjuvant to fluorescence-guided surgery, improving surgical outcomes and reducing the likelihood of tumour recurrence and metastasis.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Reverberation time and random-incidence sound absorption measured in the audible and ultrasonic ranges with an omnidirectional parametric loudspeaker

    No full text
An omnidirectional parametric loudspeaker (OPL) is a sound source that relies on the parametric acoustic array (PAA) phenomenon to generate an omnidirectional sound field. It consists of hundreds of ultrasonic piezoelectric sensors placed on a sphere, each of which emits an ultrasonic carrier wave modulated in amplitude by an audible signal. Due to non-linear propagation in air, the audible signal is demodulated, resulting in an omnidirectional sound field consisting of audible and ultrasonic waves. Earlier work has shown that the OPL is more omnidirectional than a standard dodechaedron, although it produces lower sound pressure levels especially at lower frequencies. This sound source was originally designed for room acoustics, but its application to this field remains still unexplored. This paper proposes a method to measure the reverberation time of a room with an OPL using exponential sine sweeps (ESS). In addition, the sound absorption of material samples in a reverberation chamber is obtained. The results show that the OPL can measure these magnitudes with confidence, even though, compared to a standard dodechaedron, it has more difficulties in achieving large signal-to-noise ratios in the decay curves for the lower frequencies. The developed methodology also allows the ultrasonic frequency range to be examined. The results indicate that the ultrasonic waves do not penetrate the sample under test as they are attenuated during propagation in air.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
