Julio Broutá’s Translations of Bernard Shaw

    No full text
It is well known that Bernard Shaw was deeply concerned with the translations of his works, to the point that he kept a thorough record of the whole process of translation and performances of his plays in foreign countries, most particularly in Central Europe. On the recommendation of Shaw’s Austrian translator Siegfried Trebitsch (1868–1958), Julio Broutá became Shaw’s official translator into Spanish in 1907 and retained this position throughout Shaw’s lifetime. Born in Luxembourg in 1896, Broutá acquired Spanish nationality by marriage and lived in Madrid, where he worked as a correspondent for a number of English, Belgian, French, and German newspapers while also earning a living as a professional translator. Broutá was more than able to meet the requirements for his Continental translators: he had a good mastery of English, so he could translate directly from the original without an intermediate source (all of his translations are “from the English”); he also had a good familiarity with Spanish and worked quickly, so he could provide translations at a speedy pace, to the amazement and satisfaction of Shaw himself. Moreover, as a contributor to the left-oriented La Revista Blanca (1898–1905), Broutá was keen on socialism and Naturalism. This might have been a factor in Shaw’s sympathetic view of Broutá when he appointed him to be his authorised Spanish translator. All in all, Broutá could deliver what Shaw most appreciated: the rendering into Spanish of his entire canon in a timely fashion.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

On the capture and use of private conversations on mobile phones for marketing purposes: A case in the tourism sector

    No full text
The digitization of the Broadband Society is generating a profound debate on access to users’ browsing and personal data. An axis of controversy is the case of mobile telephony. Many people suspect that smartphones record users’ conversations, without their consent, through the microphone, subsequently providing data to companies so that they make personalized announcements regarding the topic of conversation. In addition, there are various authors who argue that large internet companies use artificial intelligence to analyze these huge volumes of captured data in order to classify users and create accurate profiles. The objective of this research, of an experimental nature using participant observation and discussion group techniques, is to find out and analyze the phenomenon of capturing conversations for commercial purposes, to try to verify how they specifically affect the tourism sector. The study concludes that different companies in the tourism sector collect and use conversation data both to create profiles and detect patterns of behavior and to offer related advertising. Likewise, it is concluded that in certain cases the consumer becomes aware of the mechanism, and discomfort is generated that could even negatively affect the advertised brand.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Indoor plant health monitoring system using NDVI imaging, PMFC sensing and soil moisture data

    No full text
Monitoring plant health is essential for ecosystem stability and sustainable environments. While satellite-based systems like Copernicus support large-scale outdoor vegetation analysis, indoor plants require localized, high-resolution monitoring. This work presents an Indoor Plant Health Monitoring System, designed to assess plant health through a combination of image processing, plant-microbial interaction information and environmental conditions monitoring. The system integrates a high-quality camera with a red-filter lens for Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) imaging of the plant, a Plant Microbial Fuel Cell (PMFC) for the potential bioelectricity generation from the plant-microbial activity in the rhizosphere and a soil moisture sensor for humidity monitoring. Experimental results on a Pothos plant demonstrate that the system can detect plant stress early, with PMFC Open Cell Voltage changes occurring 12-24 hours before visible NDVI alterations. The integration of multiple data sources enables detailed insights into plant responses to environmental changes and supports timely interventionsinfo:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

This paper presents a mixed-method study that combines quantitative and qualitative techniques to evaluate the technological profile and the motivation and satisfaction of Multimedia Engineering degree students using augmented visualizationmethods.Newusesoftechnologyintheeducationframeworkhavebeenextendedtoalllevelsandsectors, but these innovations require approval, validation and evaluation by the final users (i.e., the students) to ensure that they are suitable. In this paper,we will discussthe advantages anddisadvantages of applying mixedevaluation technologyin a case study of the use of interactive and collaborative tools for the visualization of 3D virtual models in a subject related to a Multimedia Engineering degree. The main objective is to evaluate whether our students are prepared to use the systems proposed, and to determine if the designed experiment generates an increase in the motivation and satisfaction using new devices and systems to visualize complex models. Results showed that the combination of mixed-methods allowed us to obtain adequate feedback to improve future iterations of this type experiment.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Towards Smart City governance. Case Study: improving the interpretation of quantitative traffic measurement data through citizen participation

    No full text
Citizens play a core role in sustainable cities as users of the services delivered by cities and as active participants in initiatives aimed at making cities more sustainable. This paper considers the role of citizens as information providers and discusses the conditions under which citizens can participate in the development of sustainable cities. The objective of this study is to document the sustainability of an urban transit system and evaluate its compliance, with citizen participation as a major contributor. The methodology used is intensive field visits, interviews, and a mixed analysis of Sant Andreu de Palomar District in Barcelona city. The circulating vehicles are quantitatively monitored, qualitative problems are detected, and the typology of vehicles and other aspects identified and detailed in the study are indicated. All this information is contrasted with that of the technological sensors in the sectors. The results indicate that vehicles in the current pattern of urban density planned under incorrect sensor operation influence sustainable behavior through agglomerative clustering. This paper provides recommendations for future urban sustainability assessment research, including the employment of mixed-methods research, among other strategies. This article is intended to assist policymakers and traffic engineers in evaluating the sustainability of urban transportation infrastructure projects considering citizens as sensorsinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    No full text
The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the mental health and medical care of patients with pre-existing conditions. We longitudinally evaluated perceived stress, psychological distress, and coping strategies in 50 patients with medical diseases, finding that, 6 months after baseline evaluation, perceived stress and psychological distress were increased, and that less use was made of active coping strategies. Age (younger patients), previous psychological problems, and altered medical treatments emerge as risk factors. Proactive detection of psychopathological suffering is essential to prevent a parallel mental health pandemic from unfolding. Covid-19 has had an impact on patients with medical diseases, expressed in increased psychological vulnerability that may interfere in their disease course. While telematic monitoring is an important factor in reducing impact, early detection of psychopathological symptoms is crucial to ensuring adherence to treatments and to developing effective biopsychosocial approaches.

    No full text
