Participation and barriers to friluftsliv among residents in Skien
The thesis explores the participation and barriers to friluftsliv among residents in Skien municipality. Through a structured survey distributed to a diverse sample of residents, the study examines the resident’s participation frequency in friluftsliv, and the barriers which are perceived as most important to not participating in friluftsliv. The study explores whether participation and perceived barriers are correlated to the cultural background of the residents. The theoretical framework draws on the Theory of Planned Behavior to explore how individual behavior is dependent on personal and sociocultural factors. The findings suggest that most participants report positive attitudes towards friluftsliv, but barriers such as time, money and knowledge are somewhat more prominent among residents with Non-Western backgrounds. These findings should have implications for local inclusion efforts and emphasize the need to recognize friluftsliv as a socially and culturally mediated practice
Restoration of Sea Trout Habitat in Unnebergsbekken: A Strategic Adaptive Management Approach
This thesis evaluates in-stream habitat conditions and production potential as the basis for habitat restoration in Unnebergsbekken, a small anadromous stream in southeastern Norway, to enhance spawning and rearing habitats for sea trout (Salmo trutta). The study combines habitat mapping with the calculation of production potential, followed by implementing restoration measures in selected areas, including gravel placement and habitat structure installation, within a Strategic Adaptive Management (SAM) framework.
A Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) design was used to establish baseline data and monitor long-term changes. Physical mapping and biological surveys revealed significant spatial variability in habitat conditions, identifying key bottlenecks in substrate composition, shelter availability, and riparian condition, particularly in downstream reaches. Electrofishing surveys indicated varied juvenile densities across stations, though no significant correlation to habitat type was found.
The study highlights the importance of spatial habitat assessment in identifying potential habitat bottlenecks when prioritizing restoration efforts. A comprehensive monitoring plan was developed to evaluate future biological responses and guide ongoing restoration measures. The findings highlight the need for a holistic approach to habitat restoration, combining physical improvements with long-term ecological monitoring to enhance sea trout populations and the broader ecological function of Unnebergsbekken and similar streams in Norway
Integrated Dynamic Modeling of Long-Term Oil Production with Uncertainty Description
The increasing demand for energy, coupled with the critical role of the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) in the global energy landscape, necessitates innovative approaches to optimize the oil production from complex reservoirs. This PhD thesis presents an integrated dynamic modeling approach to optimize long-term oil production from advanced wells, considering the inherent uncertainties in reservoir behavior. The research is part of the DigiWell project, aiming to maximize oil production profitability and energy efficiency through the development of innovative tools and methodologies.
The thesis initially develops fully integrated dynamic well-reservoir models using dynamic multiphase flow simulators like OLGA. These models accurately simulate the performance of advanced wells under various operational conditions, capturing transient processes such as coning and complex multiphase interactions. However, the computational intensity of mechanistic models limits their applicability, especially for uncertainty quantification and optimization studies requiring ensemble simulations.
To balance the accuracy and computational efficiency, simplified physics-based models, specifically the MultiSegment Well (MSW) model, were employed. These models offered practical solutions for long-term oil recovery predictions with reasonable accuracy and efficiency, although challenges remain for high-resolution predictions in extensive reservoirs with multiple uncertain parameters. In the PUNQ-S3 reservoir case study, both the OLGA and MSW models generated similar trends in oil and water production profiles for long-term predictions. After a decade, results showed that Autonomous Inflow Control Device (AICD) and Inflow Control Device (ICD) completions reduced water production by 38% and 36%, respectively, in the OLGA model. In the MSW model, these reductions were 43% and 40%, compared to openhole wells. Additionally, AICD completions resulted in slight increases in the oil production of 0.5% in the OLGA model and 1.2% in the MSW model.
To further enhance the computational speed, data-driven models utilizing Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) were explored. These proxy models demonstrated the potential to significantly reduce the simulation times, providing efficient tools for uncertainty quantification at the cost of a minor reduction in accuracy, which was deemed acceptable for many practical applications. The data-driven proxy models developed in this study for simulating oil recovery from advanced wells achieved a 350-fold increase in computational speed, with error margins under 1% for oil production and 4% for water production predictions, demonstrating their practicality for rapid simulations.
The thesis also investigates the functionality of different types of inflow control technologies, such as AICDs and Autonomous Inflow Control Valves (AICVs), which were found to effectively minimize unwanted fluid production and enhance oil recovery. Studies in this work demonstrated that, under Johan Sverdrup reservoir conditions, RCP-AICDs delayed water breakthrough by 252 days compared to conventional wells and reduced water cut by 2.9% over 750 days compared to ICDs, while maintaining oil production levels. In heavy oil reservoirs, ICDs, AICDs, and AICVs reduced water cut by 6.5%, 11.4%, and 19.5%, respectively, over 1500 days compared to openhole completions. For the PUNQ-S3 reservoir with CO2 Water-Alternating-Gas (WAG) injection, AICDs achieved a 36.3% reduction in water production compared to openhole wells. In a reservoir with conditions similar to the Troll field, AICVs and Interval Control Valves (ICVs) reduced water production by 68.97% and 72.33%, respectively, underscoring their effectiveness in complex reservoir settings. For cases with significant petrophysical uncertainty, AICVs reduced the risk associated with excessive water production by up to 91%, demonstrating their robustness in managing uncertainty.
Other notable contributions of this research include the development of a comprehensive workflow for side-by-side modeling and analysis of various advanced well completion designs with different FCD configurations, essential for conducting optimization studies to enhance the completion design of advanced multilateral wells and improve long-term oil recovery. Additionally, techniques were developed to use and extend the functionality of the open-source tool MRST for modeling complex integrated well-reservoir systems, effectively overcoming the limitations of commercial software. Besides, the improved techniques in this work for coupling programming tools with commercial software further enhanced flexibility and efficiency in uncertainty quantification and optimization studies.
The findings of this research underscore the importance of integrating advanced well modeling, uncertainty quantification, and optimization techniques to enhance oil production. Future research should address the development of sophisticated Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models for FCDs to improve model accuracy, solve existing limitations in MSW models for enhanced oil recovery simulations, and further streamline data-driven modeling frameworks to expedite the training process and enhance the overall efficiency. This work provides a comprehensive foundation for the ongoing optimization of oil production from advanced wells, paving the way for future advancements in petroleum engineering and field management under uncertain conditions.publishedVersio
Kvalifisering for hvem?
In this master thesis we have sought to examine the problem representations expressed in Meld.

The study employs an autoethnographic research design combined with qualitative methodology, utilizing in-depth interviews with four professionals. The objective is to identify the challenges and opportunities associated with using work placements for pupils at risk of or struggling within the traditional school system.
The findings reveal that about involuntary school absence is often a complex and involuntary response to psychosocial stressors, such as bullying, anxiety, neurobiological challenges such as ADHD and dyslexia, and general feelings of not belonging. Earlier studies within the Youth Enterprise subject shows that work experience emerges as a promising alternative as a learning method for pupils with these types of challenges allowing the pupils to experience mastery, motivation, and social belonging personally meaningful tasks.
The thesis draws on the “Learning by Doing” by Jhon Dewey (1916) and “Self-Efficacy” by Albert Bandura (1978). These theories illustrate how experiential learning and a belief in one's abilities can enhance self-esteem and confidence. Several structural barriers are identified, including age restrictions, a lack of placement opportunities, and institutional rigidity, which limit the sustainability of work experience as an intervention.
A key contribution of the study is the development of the "Mastery Triad" model, which demonstrates that the interaction between school, work, and life context is essential for pupils to experience mastery and personal growth. The study concludes that early, flexible, and relationship-based interventions are crucial for promoting inclusion and long-term well-being.

Intelligente systemer – smarte valg?
Nøkkelord: mobbing i skole; elev; rettsavgjørelser; økologisk utviklingsperspektivSeveral cases of school bullying have lately been processed in the legal system. In some of these cases the municipality, as the school owner, been found responsible for not being able to prevent bullying in school and been imposed a compensation claim to the bullied pupil. This qualitative study executed an analysis of the court decisions in the cases with a positive outcome to the lawsuit of the pupil. The data consists of 9 court cases that have newly been processed in the legal system. The research investigated the schools’ explanations of the events that was taken into considerations before handling the bullying. Results show how the school trivialized the pupil’s story of bullying, denying the occurrence of bullying, normalise the behaviour the pupils were exposed to, consider the pupils trustworthiness low and disclaim responsibility for the bullying. The explanations used by the school to handle the bullying, combined with the schools implemented and preventive measures, is discussed through an ecological developmental perspective.

Ornamentations such as trills and other grace notes are an important indicator of genre for folk music. Unfortunately, there has been little to no research on ornamentation in Norwegian folk music; especially on recorder-family flutes.
My interest in ornamentation started when my “sjøfløyte” (recorder-family flute) teacher commented on my lack of ornamentation. However, my teacher had problems formulating how and where to place this ornamentation that was lacking in my playing style. A lot of ornaments are tacit- and embodied knowledge. In this master’s thesis, I have researched the kind of ornamentation used in Norwegian folk music on recorder flutes, how the ornamentation is connected to different tones and intervals, and what kind of potential ornamentation has for variation.
I use a combination of quantitative and qualitative research in this thesis. I counted and organized ornaments from 14 recorder players with a total of 71 recordings (not included myself). My own playing is an important part in methods like Learning by doing, by copying and trying out different ornaments. I have used the program Sonic Visualier to get a graphic representation of the music and collected the ornaments in an excel document. I also used manual transcription where I used simplified notation to have a location to place the ornaments.
I discuss my results and compare them with earlier research on Norwegian folk music, baroque and renaissance ornaments theory, and ornamentation in folk music from the British Isles. In Norwegian Folk Music it is often difficult to tell what is melody and what is ornamentatio. The difference between melody and ornamentstion is based on subjective understanding of genre and folk music style. I have made 11 categories of ornamentation based on the tone movement in the ornament and how they appear in Sonic Visualiser. These categories are again split into two depending on if the ornamentation tone is higher or lower than the melody tone.
The results show that in more than 83% of the ornaments studied, the ornamental movement is between a whole- or halftone from the melody tone. It is mainly the lowest finger in use on the flute which moves in these tonal movements. For example, F-G is a common movement in flute playing, and the ornamentation on this tone is implemented by the index finger. A lot of the ornamentation is connected to the root tone, the third and the fifth in the melody. Most of the ornamentation is higher than the melody tone. This makes the deepest tone in the ornament the melody tone. These results indicate that there are additional patterns outside of Grovens “likringshypotese” (hypothesis of ornaments) that influences which tones are used in the ornament.
The results of my analysis found there is a potential for ornamental variation, with the differences lying often in the small details. I've found that recorder players often agree on where to place the ornaments in a piece, but the type of ornamentation varie
