Are adult cystic fibrosis patients satisfied with medication treatment?

    No full text
Background Treatment satisfaction can be described as the patient's experience in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). It can be influenced using modulators and clinical characteristics. The aims of this study were to evaluate and compare adult CF patients with and without modulators regarding treatment satisfaction, related factors and to manage their drug related problems (DRPs). Methods A single-center prospective cohort study was conducted between June 2023 and January 2024. Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire for Medication (TSQM 1.4), including effectiveness, side effects, convenience, global satisfaction domains, CF Questionnaire-Revised (CFQ-R), and Medication Adherence Report Scale were applied and assessed with and without modulator therapy groups. The relationship between clinical characteristics and TSQM was analyzed by correlations and regression analysis. Recommendations on DRPs identified by clinical pharmacists were made to the physicians and patients and classified according to Pharmaceutical Care Network Europe (PCNE v9.1). Results A total of 110 patients with 51 modulator therapy and 59 without modulator therapy were included. The mean global satisfaction score of modulator users was found to be 19.733 (p < 0.001) points higher than non-users. When the CFQ-R treatment burden score improved by 1point, global satisfaction score increased by 0.233 points (p < 0.001). When the number of hospitalizations increased by 1 day, the global satisfaction score decreased by 4.751 points (p < 0.001). A total of 84 DRPs were identified, and 69 (82.1%) of them were resolved. Conclusions Treatment satisfaction in adult CF patients is influenced by modulators, treatment burden, and clinical factors, so access to modulators is important. This is the first study to classify DRPs according to PCNE in CF. Clinical pharmacists contribute to the management of CF

    No full text
This study aimed to investigate the effects of a stress management intervention on interoception, perceived stress, and psychological resilience in university students. Fifty-two students were randomly assigned to an intervention group (n = 28) or a control group (n = 24). The intervention group participated in a 12-week stress management program, attending weekly 3-h sessions. Participants completed the Interoceptive Sensory Questionnaire (ISQ), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) at baseline and final. Data were analyzed to compare changes within and between groups. The intervention group showed significant improvements in ISQ (z = -2.093; p = 0.036) and BRS (z = -2.796; p = 0.006) scores. In contrast, no significant changes were observed in the control group. Comparisons between baseline and final assessments revealed significant between-group differences in ISQ (z = -2.480, p = 0.013), PSS (z = -2.192, p = 0.038), and BRS (z = 2.192, p = 0.044) scores between the intervention and control groups. The findings suggest that the stress management intervention enhanced interoceptive awareness, reduced perceived stress, and increased psychological resilience among university students. These improvements are essential for supporting decision-making, fostering a sense of belonging, and promoting academic success and overall well-being. The results underscore the value of incorporating stress management programs into educational settings to address students' mental health challenges.Trial Registration: identifier: NCT0610195

Effect of process variables on hydrothermal carbonization of food waste

    No full text
The hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of food waste (FW) was examined in this study under a variety of conditions, including temperatures of 200 degrees C, 225 degrees C, and 250 degrees C, reaction times of 1.5, 3, 6, and 12 h, and FW-to-water ratios of 12.5, 25, and 50 g/150 mL. HTC was selected as the treatment method due to its suitability for high-moisture feedstocks like FW, as it operates under relatively mild conditions without requiring energy-intensive drying. In this study, a simulated FW mixture was used, composed of commonly discarded household items including canned green beans, canned baked beans, baked potato, baked chicken, and cheese. The study explored how variations in process parameters influenced both the yield and structural properties of hydrochars, revealing their critical role in determining final product characteristics. The hydrochars exhibited higher carbon and lower oxygen weight percentages compared to the FW. Fuel ratio (FR) values ranged from 0.20 to 0.83, with most hydrochars demonstrating moderately stable solid biofuel characteristics. Based on the heating values, it was observed that the hydrochars' values ranged between similar to 28 and similar to 33 MJ/kg, aligning with the heating value of bituminous coal. The prominent compounds detected in the aqueous phases included nitrogen-containing cyclic compounds, phenols, ketones, and amides. Overall, the findings demonstrate the potential of HTC as a sustainable waste-to-energy strategy, effectively converting FW into hydrochars with favorable fuel properties and supporting energy recovery from organic waste streams

From RIFT Audit to RIFT Turkey: Reappraising Appendicitis Risk Models for Global Relevance

    No full text
The Right Iliac Fossa Treatment (RIFT) Audit has made a substantial contribution to optimizing appendicitis management by systematically evaluating risk prediction models across different healthcare settings. Conducted in the UK, Italy, Portugal, Ireland, and Spain, this prospective study analysed data from 5,345 patients across 154 hospitals to assess the utility of various risk models in identifying patients at low risk for appendicitis. The audit revealed significant diagnostic challenges, especially in women, who exhibited higher rates of normal appendectomy (NAR) than men, with considerable variability between countries. Among the 15 evaluated models, the Adult Appendicitis Score (AAS) and the Appendicitis Inflammatory Response Score (AIRS) were identified as the most effective tools for men and women, respectively, underscoring the potential of risk scores to guide clinical decisions, reduce unnecessary surgeries, and reduce healthcare costs.</jats:p

    No full text
BACKGROUND: Oxygen is widely used to treat hypoxemia. OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of inappropriate oxygen administration in patients admitted to Internal Medicine (IM) wards and intensive care units (ICU). DESIGN AND SETTING: Single-center prospective, observational study in a tertiary university hospital in Ankara, T & uuml;rkiye. METHODS: Patients who were hospitalized in the IM wards and ICU and were receiving oxygen were recruited. Every 6 hours, the oxygenation parameters were noted, and the averages over the first 24 hours of oxygen usage were recorded. Inappropriate usage was defined as oxygen flow rates > 6 L/min in the nasal cannula and 10 L/min in the simple face mask, application of the simple face mask in chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) exacerbation, SpO(2) > 98% in general, or SpO(2)> 92% in COPD exacerbation. RESULTS: Of the 397 patients, 20% in the IM wards and 50% of 124 in the ICU received oxygen. The oxygen method used was nasal cannula in 51%, simple face mask in 21%, and high-flow nasal cannula in 4% of the patients. Among the simple face mask applications, 46% were 10 L/min. Among the 62% of patients with COPD exacerbations, the SpO(2 )was > 92%. CONCLUSION: The frequency of oxygen use was 20% among patients hospitalized in IM wards and 50% among patients in the ICU. Almost half of the simple face mask applications were inappropriate

48-month comperative evaluation of a novel glass ionomer cement and a resin composite in restoring non-carious cervical lesions of patients with systemic diseases: A randomized clinical trial

    No full text
Objective: This randomized clinical trial evaluated the 48-month clinical performance of a glass ionomer cement (GIC) and a resin composite (RC) in restoring non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) in patients with systemic diseases. Methods: A single clinician placed 134 restorations in 30 patients with systemic diseases. The NCCLs were divided into two groups based on the restorative system used: a conventional restorative GIC, Fuji Bulk (GC, Tokyo Japan) [FB] and a posterior RC, G-ae nial Posterior (GC, Tokyo Japan) [GP] along with a universal adhesive in etch & rinse mode. All procedures followed the manufacturer's guidelines. The restorations were evaluated for retention, marginal discoloration, marginal adaptation, secondary caries, surface texture and post-operative sensitivity using modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria at baseline (1 week) and at 6, 12, 36 and 48 months. Chi-square and Dunn's tests were used for statistical analysis (p 0.05). Conclusion: After 48 months, both the restorative GIC and the RC demonstrated acceptable clinical performance in treating NCCLs of patients with systemic diseases. Clinical Significance: This study shows that a GIC demonstrated no significant differences in medium-term clinical performance compared to RC for restoring non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) in patients with systemic diseases. The results suggest that GIC may be a more cost-effective and less technique-sensitive alternative, offering potential benefits for patients with complex medical conditions or limited oral hygiene, where a simpler and more efficient restorative approach could enhance treatment outcomes
