    Anticancer effects of Plantago major extract on colorectal and gastric cancer cell lines: an in vitro study and molecular docking analysis

    Objective: Colorectal cancer and gastric cancer are one of the most prevalent types of cancer and are leading causes of cancer-related mortality worldwide. The chemotherapy is insufficient due to the poor targeting and affinity of drugs, low therapeutic effectiveness, and significant side effects. Consequently, developing effective therapeutic formulations is crucial for treating colorectal and gastric cancers. Plantago major (P. major) is a medicinal plant that has been investigated for medical research for cancer therapy owing to its rich phytochemical composition. Methods: This study aims to evaluate the antiproliferative activity of P. major leaf extract on NIH/3T3 fibroblast cells, AGS gastric, and Caco-2 colorectal cancer cell lines for 24h using XTT cell viability assay. The apoptotic activity of P. major was examined by detecting caspase 3/7 level in cells. The ROS levels in cells were measured using the DCFH-DA dye. Additionally, it assesses the interaction and binding affinities of the active compounds of P. major with the overexpressed EPCAM through molecular docking. Results: The results demonstrate a dose-dependent anticancer effect of P. major on AGS and Caco-2 cell lines by reducing cell proliferation, increasing intracellular ROS accumulation and activating the caspase 3/7 apoptosis pathway. P. major exhibited no significant cytotoxic effects on non-cancerous NIH/3T3 fibroblast cells. Molecular docking analysis confirmed the high binding affinity of active compounds in P. major, such as apigenin, aucubin, baicalein, caffeic acid, and luteolin, towards the EpCAM protein overexpressed in gastric and colorectal cancer. Conclusions: In conclusion, the P. major can be a promising effective therapeutic strategy for gastrointestinal cancers

    Performance Assessment of an Interconnected Photovoltaic-Thermal System and Solar Thermal Collector: Parametric Study and Optimization

    In the present study, an interconnected photovoltaic-thermal system and solar thermal collector with half-tubes are presented as a new generation of solar systems to produce maximum thermal and electrical power. Performance comparison of the photovoltaic module, photovoltaic-thermal system, solar thermal collector, and proposed system shows that the maximum power of 1336.27 W is generated by the proposed system. Also, the outlet fluid temperature increases by 28.03% and 20.88% compared to the photovoltaic-thermal systems and solar thermal collectors, respectively, which indicates higher quality of the generated thermal power. To improve the system performance, fins with different heights are used inside the half-tubes. The results indicated that the overall generated power increases using the fin by up to 2.93%. A parametric analysis using response surface method showed that among four parameters including flow rate, incident solar radiation, wind speed, and ambient temperature, the solar radiation and ambient temperature have the most and least impact on the system output, respectively. Also, using the response surface method, two models are provided to predict the electrical and thermal power generation of the system. Single-objective and multi-objective optimization of the system is also investigated using these models

    Preparation of water-soluble nanoconjugates of antimicrobial peptide HF-18 with polyacrylic acid: implications for environmental stress resistance

    The low stability of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) represents a major barrier to their clinical application despite their promise as therapeutic agents. This study aims to enhance the stability of the HF-18 peptide by conjugating it with polyacrylic acid (PAA), focusing on improving resistance to environmental stress conditions such as varying pH and high temperatures. In this conjugation process, different peptide-polymer ratios were explored using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) as a cross-linker. Comprehensive characterization of the resulting nanoconjugates was carried out using size exclusion chromatography, UV-vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, size and zeta potential analyses. Stability assessments indicated that the HF-18/PAA nanoconjugates exhibited significantly enhanced resilience compared to the free HF-18, particularly under acidic and high-temperature conditions. These findings suggest that conjugation with PAA effectively improves the stability of HF-18, making it more suitable for potential applications that require robustness against harsh environmental factors. This approach presents a promising strategy to overcome the limitations of AMP stability and broaden the scope of peptide-based therapeutics. The findings from the research conducted on the model antimicrobial peptide-polymer conjugate system, whose physicochemical properties and stability have been demonstrated, suggest a promising basis for future treatments of bacterial infections

    Diophantine spherical vague sets and their applications for micro-technology robots based on multiple-attribute decision-making

    We introduce the concept of Diophantine spherical vague set approach to multiple-attribute decision-making. The Spherical vague set is a novel expansion of the vague set and interval valued spherical fuzzy set. Three new concepts have been introduce such as Diophantine spherical vague weighted averaging operator, Diophantine spherical vague weighted geometric operator, generalized Diophantine spherical vague weighted averaging operator and generalized Diophantine spherical vague weighted geometric operator. We provide a numerical example to show how Euclidean distance and Hamming distance interact. Applications of the Diophantine spherical vague number include idempotency, boundedness, commutativity and monotonicity in algebraic operations. They can determine the optimal option and are more well-known and reasonable. Our goal was to identify the optimal choice by comparing expert opinions with the criteria. As a result, the model's output was more accurate as well as in the range of the natural number [Formula presented]. The weighted averaging distance and weighted geometric distance operators are distance measure that is based on aggregating model. By comparing the models under discussion with those suggested in the literature, we hoped to show their worth and reliability. It is possible to find a better solution more quickly, simply, and practically. Our objective was to compare the expert evaluations with the criteria and determine which option was the most suitable. Because they yield more precise solutions, these models are more accurate and more related to models with [Formula presented]. To show the superiority and the validity of the proposed aggregation operations, we compared it with the existing method and concluded from the comparison and sensitivity analysis that our proposed technique is more effective and reliable. This investigation yielded some intriguing results

    Sorumluluk Duygusu–Davranışına ve Sosyal-Duygusal Öğrenmeye Göre Ergenlerin Sosyal Medya Bağımlılığı ve Mutluluk Düzeylerinin İncelenmesi

    Sosyal medya kullanımı sosyalleşme sürecinde önemli bir yere sahip olduğundan, ergenler arasında kullanımı oldukçayoğundur. Mutluluk ise ruh sağlığının en önemli kriterlerinden birisidir. Ergenlerin yaşamlarından memnun olmalarımutlu olmalarına olumlu katkıları getirecektir. Bu nedenle ergenlerin sosyal medya kullanımlarının ve mutlulukdüzeylerinin araştırılması önemlidir. Araştırmada ergenlerin sosyal medya bağımlılığı ve mutluluk düzeylerinin,sorumluluk duygusuna-davranışına ve sosyal-duygusal öğrenmesine göre incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırma,betimsel yöntemle yapılmış olan kesitsel bir tarama çalışmasıdır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu, İstanbul'daki özel vedevlet ortaokullarına devam eden 505 gönüllü ergen oluşturmuştur. Araştırma verilerini toplamak için “SorumlulukDuygusu ve Davranışı Ölçeği”, “Sosyal ve Duygusal Öğrenme Ölçeği”, “Ergenler İçin Sosyal Medya Bağımlılığı Ölçeği”ve “Mutluluk Ölçeği” kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen verilerin analizi MANOVA-Pillai’s Trace Testi ile yapılmıştır. Eta kareetki büyüklüğü değerleri de hesaplanmıştır. Araştırmanın sonucunda, sorumluluk duygusu-davranışı ile sosyalduygusal öğrenme düzeyi yüksek olan ergenlerin sosyal medya bağımlılığı düzeyi düşük; mutluluk düzeyleri ise yüksekbulunmuştur.     Isolation, genomic characterization and biotechnological evaluation of lactobacilli strains from chicken gastrointestinal tract

    During a study investigating possible probiotics from chicken gut microbiota, strains C1-4 and C2-3 were isolated and identified as members of the genus Ligilactobacillus. The strains formed a well-supported cluster with Ligilactobacillus salivarius and Ligilactobacillus hayatikensis in phylogenetic trees. Their genomes, sized 1.8 Mb with G + C content of 32 %, were related to “Candidatus Avacholeplasma faecigallinarum” with a dDDH level of 95.4 %, indicating the strains were the first culturable members of the uncultured taxon. Furthermore, a dDDH value of 78.9 % with L. salivarius DSM 20555T suggested that the strains may represent a novel subspecies of L. salivarius. The functional analysis of the genomes revealed that the strains harbour genes associated with probiotic traits, including lactate utilization, acetoin and butanediol metabolism, pH homeostasis and exopolysaccharide biosynthesis. The genome annotation for the secondary metabolite biosynthesis gene clusters showed that the strains have a type III polyketide gene cluster and a bacteriocin immunity protein gene. The strains exhibited phenotypic features compatible with their potential use as probiotics, such as tolerance to low pH and NaCl, ability to achieve high auto-aggregation, and hydrophobicity properties. In addition, the strains exhibited strong antibacterial activity against pathogenic MRSA (Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 67101), S. aureus ATCC 25923, Listeria monocytogenes MBG16, and VRSA (Vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus MBG89), while showing moderate activity against Salmonella Typhimurium MBG15, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 13833, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853. The cell-free supernatant of the strains notably affected Lis. monocytogenes and S. aureus, possibly due to possible bacteriocin production. In conclusion, the strains isolated from chicken gut microbiota have a high potential to be used as probiotics in agriculture and medicine
