Development of Opinions of Tourism Students at the Prague University of Economics and Business on the COVID-19 Pandemic
The main purpose of the research was to evaluate the development of opinions of students in the Tourism study programme at the Prague University of Economics and Business (hereinafter also “VŠE”) in relation to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since March 2020, COVID-19 has hit the life of tourism students on several levels: education - online teaching; private life – health, work, living standard; career prospects in tourism. Online questionnaire surveys were conducted among tourism students in April 2020 and in April 2021. The questionnaires comprised two parts: students’ opinions on online teaching during the corona crisis, opinions on the further development of tourism and their perception of the career prospects in the field of tourism. Data evaluation was performed by mathematical and statistical methods. The main outcomes of the survey: The COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on students’ lives, they lost their part-time jobs, cancelled student’s mobility plans at foreign universities and private trips. Despite that, students see their future in the field of tourism. Students expect an increase in domestic tourism and a decrease in outgoing and incoming tourism in the next few years as well. When comparing students´ answers obtained in 2020 and 2021, there was a significant difference in two issues: 80% of students disliked online teaching in 2020, while in 2021, only 50% of students expressed their negative attitude. In 2021, more students admitted that they might find a job outside the field of tourism. The results of the investigation are important for future planning of the higher education system (implementation of the online teaching method in relevant study situations). Students also pointed out the need to communicate the tourism development perspective with students and focus on promoting their belief in the prospect of working in the field of tourism
Editorial: Written Corrective Feedback (WCF): Teachers’ Knowledge, Beliefs and Practice
Over the last two decades or so, largely triggered by Truscott’s seminal paper (1996), there has been an exponential growth of research interest in written corrective feedback (WCF) in L2 contexts (for a review, see Reinders & Mohebbi, 2018). After almost three decades, Truscott still adheres to his strong stance regarding the ineffectiveness of WCF (see Mohebbi’s interview with Truscott, 2021). Extant WCF research has mainly focused on feedback scope (i.e. focused versus comprehensive WCF), WCF strategies (i.e. direct, indirect, and metalinguistic), and student uptake of WCF, with relatively less attention paid to teachers themselves who play an important role in the WCF process. As deliverers of WCF, the knowledge and beliefs teachers bring to L2 writing classes can have a significant impact on the ways in which students react to and engage with WCF. Teacher beliefs may also have a direct bearing on the way WCF is implemented, though teachers’ WCF practices may not necessarily reflect their beliefs. In recent years, concerns have been expressed about the lack of ecological validity of WCF studies that have taken place in controlled classroom conditions, as well as their limited pedagogical relevance (e.g. Atkinson & Tardy, 2018; Lee et al., 2021). By addressing the teacher dimension, this special issue aims to explore teachers’ knowledge, beliefs and practices regarding WCF in authentic L2 classroom contexts, with potentially relevant implications for real-world practices
Crude Oil Price, Interest Rate and Unemployment Nexus in Nigeria: An Application of Toda and Yamamoto Long-Run Causality Procedure
This study aims to examine the relationship between crude oil price, interest rate and the uemployment rate in Nigeria using times series data for the 1991-2019 periods. The stationarity property of the series was examined using Augmented Dickey and Fuller (1979) and Elliot, Rothenberg and Stock’s (1996) unit root test. The outcomes of Augmented Dickey and Fuller indicated a mixture of an order of integration among the series while Elliot et al.’s (1996) unit root test revealed that all the series are stationary at the first difference and therefore are said to integrate of order one. The Toda and Yamamoto long-run granger causality indicated that one-way causality exists flowing from crude oil price to unemployment rate, unemployment rate to interest rate, population growth to the unemployment rate, crude oil price to interest rate and population growth to interest rate alongside two-way causality flowing from population growth to crude oil price. Therefore, based on the empirical outcomes we recommended that labour will serve as an efficient substituting factor of production for energy and capital in the case of the Nigerian economy and Nigerian government should develop both industrial and non crude oil sectors to create employment opportunities for the unemployed teeming population as well as increasing the country’s export
Adaptive Capability, Social Media Agility, Ambidextrous Marketing Capability, and Business Survival: A Mediation Analysis
This study assessed the effect of adaptive capability and social media agility on survival firms in multiple industries in five countries. Furthermore, it established the mediating effect of ambidextrous marketing capability on the interaction between adaptive capability, social media agility, and firm survival, and examined the interaction between social media agility and adaptive capability. The study adopted a survey design and a sample of 416 firms in Nigeria, Canada, the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom, and conducted the regression analysis to test the hypotheses formulated therein. The results showed that adaptive capability and social media agility had a positive and significant effect on business survival. Further analysis showed that when ambidextrous marketing capability was incorporated into the two models respectively and forming multiple regression analysis, the coefficient of ambidextrous marketing capability had a significant effect on business survival; however, the coefficient of adaptive capability and social media agility became insignificant suggesting that a full mediation effect was established. Lastly, social media agility had a positive and significant effect on the firm’s adaptive capability. The findings suggest that adaptive capability and social media agility enhance firm survival through the mechanism of ambidextrous marketing capability. The study recommends that firms strengthen their adaptive capability infrastructure; develop a robust, agile social media interface, and commit resources to enhance connectivity with the market, supplier, and customers (outside-in). Likewise, enhance internal organizational knowledge, skill, and ability (inside-out) to offer incremental and radical products to address changing market demand
The Acceptance of E-learning as a Tool for Teaching Entrepreneurship during the COVID-19 Pandemic The Case of HITS of Sidi Bouzid and Ksar Hellal -Tunisia
A relentless mutation characterized universities around the world by the advent of the infamous virus that gave rise to the pandemic called COVID-19. This study aims at exploring e-learning readiness and its acceptance as a tool for teaching entrepreneurship in two higher institutes of technological studies in Tunisia, and it has become imminent to resort to e-learning. The desired results are more far-sighted in these new special circumstances, which have made this mode of learning the gateway to the entire educational system be called into question. The question is: How did students perceive this new mode of distance education? An online questionnaire was distributed to extrapolate a descriptive analysis. We have explored certain facets in both institutes that highlight many disadvantages between both students and areas: mastery of technology, poor internet connectivity, technological accessibility, and unkind study environments. Besides this, research highlights the role of new approaches to distance learning in entrepreneurship. It will end with the proposal of recommendations that are relevant for different stakeholders in the phenomenon of distance education in general and the entrepreneurial discipline in particular
Symmetric Prudence in New Definitions of Conceptual Framework for Financial Reporting
Since the version of the Conceptual Framework for Financial Reporting is revised, the interest in accounting concepts that are fundamental in financial reporting has been growing. The purpose of this article is to investigate the evolutionary logic of prudence in the definitions and recognition criteria of assets and liabilities, the causes and consequences of new changes in the Conceptual Framework of 2018. As a result, it was obtained that different interpretations of probability and asymmetric asset and liability identification caused the new changes. The reconciliation between the intentions of new asset and liabilities definitions and their correct understanding results has been illustrated. The new complication in defining obligation such as “no practical ability to avoid” was found. In conclusion, we constant the new definitions as the positive consequence from a psychological point of view, simplifying individuals judgments, as from a conceptual point of view, leading to the common understanding and improvements of qualitative characteristics of financial information. The direct evidence of conceptual improvement is symmetric prudence as support of financial statements’ fundamental qualitative characteristics – faithful representation
Performance Gap Analysis Under the Influence of Management Innovation and Business Model Innovation
In the present study, the effect of Management innovation and Business model innovation on firm performance has been investigated by considering the mediating role of sustainable competitive advantage. The present study in terms of applied purpose and in terms of the data collection method, is descriptive-survey, because it describes the variables in the statistical sample studied. The statistical population of the research is all Managers and vice presidents of export-oriented production firms located in industrial parks of Khouzestan province in Iran. The study of statistical results showed that the variables of management innovation and business model innovation have a positive and significant effect on firm performance. Also, the variable of sustainable competitive advantage with a positive effect on firm performance, mediates the relationship between two independent variables of research with the dependent variable. Management innovation considers new ways to design a strategy, change firm practices, compensate the service system to organizational members, and create adaptation and change in the firm. Because it is difficult to emulate innovation in management, it will increase the ability of firms to maintain their competitive advantage, and this will also improve performance. Also, firms can achieve a sustainable competitive advantage and thus superior performance by properly utilizing resources through business model innovation and turning it into a kind of core competency with the continuation of innovative practices in line with developments resulting from the dynamics of the business environment
Accessing Online Instruction amidst COVID-19 in Bangladesh: Barriers and Coping Strategies
With the sudden onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and disruption of the education systems worldwide, private universities in Bangladesh transitioned to online classes to ensure continuity of education. Therefore, it was important to investigate the private university teachers’ and students’ perceptions regarding various dimensions of accessing online instruction and coping strategies used by teachers. A mixed-methods approach was used to collect data from 208 teachers and 674 students through questionnaires and focus group discussions. The findings indicate that teachers and students encountered several barriers, including unstable internet connection, costly internet packages, minimal support for teachers, issues with online assessment, and an unsuitable home environment. To combat existing problems related to assessment and to increase interaction in the classroom, teachers used a small range of coping strategies. Measures are suggested to ensure access to stable internet connectivity, financial support to students and teacher training on online pedagogy and assessment
Factor Analysis of Government Performance and Tax Morale in Nigeria
The paper made a factor analysis of the variables that shape the tax morale of individuals in developing economies as well as the factors that citizens considered to be important in assessing government performance. Data from the Afrobarometer Survey 6 Questionnaire administered on Nigerians was used for the analysis. Desk review of several journal articles was made to extract the relevant factors used for the study. A collection of variables offered in the literature as determinants of tax morale and the aspects of government that are measured when assessing government performance were synthesized as measurement parameters. Both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted using principal component analysis. The study established that the data from Afrobarometer Survey 6 on Nigeria was found reliable with adequate goodness of fits, which is significant for any study. The paper found six of the items on the questionnaire suitable to measure tax morale and ten other items suitable as measures of government performance under three dimensions as an improvement on economic issues, infrastructure provision, and social issues. The paper recommends that the government and other policymakers should pay sufficient attention to tax morale and the performance of government, especially adequate provision of food and improving the standard of living among the poor citizens before attempts at controlling crime
The Performance Measurement Frameworks in Health Care: Appropriateness Criteria for Measuring and Evaluating the Quality-of-Care Performance through a Systematic Review
While quality management has become essential in the industrial field, it is still looking for a place in the social field. Experiences remain very divergent, and consensus on the appropriate method and effective tools is still far from being reached. This paper aims to review the literature in the field of performance measurement and management in health care. Studies concerning performance measurement and management in health in all settings were included. Studies before 2018 were identified from PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. We conducted a thematic analysis of the international literature, identifying themes around the terms “performance assessment, performance evaluation, performance measurement, health indicators, conceptual framework, assessment framework, health system performance, and monitoring and evaluation. Thirty-seven articles were reviewed, and a set of conceptual frameworks were analyzed. Results were interpreted following the seven areas of the conceptual framework: Fundamental questions in performance evaluation, aims and objectives, role and goals, performance, conceptual frameworks, dysfunction of the health system, and performance assessment. All areas of care were involved, health promotion, preventive and curative care. For most organizations, performance measurement was in a relatively early stage of development or implementation. However, some dysfunctions were identified: a lack of systematic outcome assessment, a lack of documentation, a lack of resource evaluation related to quality for specific diseases, and persisting variations among providers in care for similar patients
