The Role of Learners’ First Language in the Foreign Language Classroom
An enduring contribution of Richards Sparks’ work has been his exploration of the relationship between a learner’s first language (L1) and a language that he or she learns subsequently (L2). The present paper considers that relationship from the perspective of learners and teachers of a ‘foreign’ language in classroom settings. The paper first sets the broader context by looking briefly at the recently developed concept of ‘translanguaging’ and the more established notion of ‘multilingual competence’. It then moves into the domain of the foreign language classroom. It outlines studies of how much, and why, foreign language teachers have been observed to use their students’ L1 (often, in the teachers’ own view, excessively). It argues that attempts to exclude the students’ L1 have been not only impracticable but also misguided. It proposes a framework within which teachers can avoid the dangers of using the L1 excessively but also build on its potential as a support for learning
The Impact of Digital Transformation on Project Management and Business Development: Case Studies in Diverse Industries
In today's world, digitalisation is one of the main features of the modern economy; it is a systematic approach to the use of digital resources to increase labour productivity, competitiveness and economic development of the company as a whole, which contributes to the formation of a new technological order. The global trend of digitalisation in the economy in a rapidly changing environment requires the creation of new models and mechanisms of project management based on the foundation of both traditional methodologies and innovative business ideas and development strategies. Due to these trends, approaches to the development of modern project management are rapidly growing under the influence of digital technologies and automation. Modern project management is primarily focused on obtaining a quality result, while the process itself can be organised depending on the specifics of the project being implemented. The purpose of the study is to determine the impact of digitalisation on modern project management and, in general, on the development of modern business. To achieve this goal, a set of general scientific methods was used, including analysis, synthesis, generalisation, systematisation, induction and deduction. The study proves that modern project management is characterised by the active development and implementation of innovative digital technologies that allow team members to focus on the result and quality performance of their functions, while routine tasks can be performed using automated systems and artificial intelligence.
The Effect of the Pamphlet of Study Skill on Iranian Pre-Intermediate EFL Learners’ Writing Skill
The purpose of this study was to consider the effect of the pamphlet of the study skill on writing texts of Iranian Pre-Intermediate EFL students in a private institute in Isfahan. To achieve the intended purpose, an Oxford Placement Test (OPT) was administered to 100 learners in a private English language institute and 60 pre intermediate learners were selected as the participants of the study. They were divided into two groups randomly. The experimental group (30 students) and control group (30 students). Both of the groups were asked to a test as a pre-test and post-test. Afterwards the experimental group was taught a pamphlet about the skills of writing during 20 sessions. Then, the data of the study was statistically analyzed with using SPSS software. The results showed when the students in the experimental group learned the skills of writing a good text, they could write the different kinds of texts. They could organize and develop the paragraphs very well and they could also use appropriate linking words in different types of writing texts
Intercultural Competence in Textbooks of Croatian as a Mother Tongue
The development of language competences is the fundamental goal of educational documents at the world (Eight Key Competencies for Lifelong Learning, 2008; 2020), European (CEFRL, 2015) and national level Curriculum for the subject Croatian language for elementary schools and high schools (2019). This implies the development of language communication and linguistic competence. In the process of primary school language learning, it is important to develop linguistic and communicative competence, which includes sociolinguistic, strategic and pragmatic competence, but also intercultural competence. Intercultural competence is most often defined as competence in which knowledge of elements of different cultures that are in contact with the dominant culture is developed or the child gets to know them through different contents in order to understand the world in which he lives. In Croatian language classes, the child most often encounters this competence through various texts that are written from the perspective of another culture or talk about different cultures that live in the Republic of Croatia, as well as outside it. Thus, a child will, for example, learn something about the eating habits of the British if he reads E. Blyton's novels Five Friends and the like. Therefore, the goal of this research is to analyze textbooks and reading books for the teaching of the Croatian language from the third to the sixth grade and to find elements of intercultural competence in the texts through qualitative analysis. It is expected that crosscultural elements will most often be found in the starting texts and that most of the texts will belong to the Anglo-Saxon linguistic and cultural area
An Exploratory Study of the Association between the Big-Five Personality Dimensions, the Use of Influencing Behaviors with Military Staff Members' Perceived Performance
The purpose was to explore the association between the Big Five personality dimensions, the use of influencing behaviors (influencing tactics and political skill) with military staff members’ perceived performance. The sample included 185 Armed Forces staff members from various countries (predominantly the Baltic countries, Sweden, Norway and the USA). A hierarchical multiple regression indicated that the Big-Five dimensions Extraversion and Openness made statistically significant contributions (albeit low) in step 1 of the regression analysis in relation to performance, however, their contribution was weakened after the influencing behaviors were added in step 2 of the analysis. Two influencing behaviors (influencing tactic Rational persuasion and Political skill) demonstrated to be unique statistically significant contributions to perceived performance in the model as a whole, with political skill being the strongest. Practical considerations and future research directions are suggested
Determinants of Indonesia Domestic Investment and Foreign Investment
This research aimed to know how the effect of capital expenditure and inflation variable the Domestic and Foreign Investment in Indonesia especially Provinces on Java Island from 2016 to 2020. This research used the panel data regression method with time‐series data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) and the Directorate General of Fiscal Balance's portal data. The results of this study are the inflation variable partially significant effect on Foreign Investment in provinces on Java Island. On the contrary, the capital expenditure variable does not have a significant effect both on domestic and foreign investment, while the inflation variable strengthens the relationship between capital expenditures and domestic investment
Goodwill and Negative Goodwill: The Real Vision for the Future of a Company–Greek Accounting Standards View
During the last decades, more and more the role of the intangible assets of a company, becomes the main advantage. When a company, undoubtedly change the main purpose of his activity, then the goodwill, must be written‐off, or must appear as a negative goodwill, giving to the stakeholders the real vision for the future of the company, and the real value for not false prospects
Characterizing and Modeling the Role of Servant Leadership Style on the Customer Lifetime Value
Traditional theories of leadership are based on the hierarchical model in which followers at lower levels as organizational members are required to comply with the commands no longer meet the needs and expectations due to dynamic changes in the business environment and consequently a new and progressive leadership model is necessary. The servant Leadership model is a form of leadership that is focusing on the relationship between leader and follower in terms of service provision, growth, development, and empowerment. On the other hand, the move toward a customer‐centric approach to marketing coincides with the emergence of a new paradigm and increased access to customer information, which has led to an enormous current interest in customer lifetime value (CLV) in both quantitative and qualitative approaches. This research aimed to investigate the role of servant leadership on customer lifetime value in the banking sector in the form of an innovative model. For this purpose, using a descriptive‐analytical method in a framework of the case study of a governmental commercial bank and also by using structural equation modeling, appropriate statistical analysis, and fitness indices the proposed research conceptual model was analyzed and explained. The results demonstrated the positive and significant influences of key variables including servant leadership and its six identified components on the customer lifetime value mainly through a structural model in the context of the banking sector. Empirical results showed that the proposed model was highly confirmed and can effectively discover and predict the effects of servant leadership on the customer lifetime value
An Investigation on the Correlation of Iranian English Teachers’ Accountability with Their Level of Reflection and Burnout
Finding the extent of the correlation of Iranian English teachers’ accountability with their reflective teaching and BO was the ultimate intention of conducing this research. In order to attain this purpose, a hundred twenty male and female English teachers took part in the current study on the basis of a convenience sampling. The participants had an age range between 25 to 44 and their experience in teaching English was at least 2 years. There were three instruments used in this research including three questionnaires as job accountability, teachers’ reflection questionnaire, and teacher’s BO questionnaires. Pearson-product moment and linear regression were applied to analyze the collected data through SPSS software version 24. The results illustrated that there was a positive significant correlation between teachers’ accountability and their reflective teaching. In addition, the results revealed a negative significant correlation between teachers’ accountability and their BO. This study also involved a number of practical and effective implications on accountability, reflective teaching and BO for language teachers and syllabus designers
EFL Teachers’ Assessment Literacy: A Contextualized Measure of Assessment Theories and Skills
Teachers from different sectors of education have always been involved in the process of assessing learners’ academic performance. In the language teaching discipline, this has highlighted the significance of language assessment literacy (LAL), reflecting its significance to language teachers across various settings. In the wake of recent theoretical bourgeoning, development of a contextualized framework that proves helpful in conceptualization and measurement of English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers’ LAL is required. To this aim, the present study gained insights from Fulcher’s (2012) LAL framework into validation and examination of a LAL scale that could be considered for its applicability and usefulness as a LAL measure and help EFL teachers self-evaluate their LAL levels (in particular, their LAL theoretical and practical components). For this purpose, a mixed-methods approach was used to synthesize interview data from six national and international experts with questionnaire data obtained from Iranian EFL teachers (N=173) to gauge their assessment theories and skills and bear evidence in support of the reliability, validity and utilization of the measure put forth. The study rounds out with the significance of teachers’ LAL in teachers’ pedagogy, with finally presenting theoretical and practical implications of the obtained evidence for educational research and practices
