    Get PDF
Despite the importance of speaking in developing learners’ command of language, due to a paucity of research in the domain, little is understood of teachers’ systematic strategy instructional practices to improve the quality of their students’ utterances. This study sought to address this gap in knowledge through the study of the practices of an experienced teacher in a Singapore primary school and another experienced teacher in an elementary school in Japan. Connecting with and drawing from Rebecca Oxford’s work on learning strategies and the development of young children’s English language skills, it aims to shed light on the value of metacognitive strategy instruction in raising children’s awareness about their own learning processes. It highlights the value of honing students’ knowledge and use of strategies for effective communication by actively engaging them in making meaning of the information they have. Teachers’ instruction on strategies for speaking significantly eases the cognitive load for learners in formulating utterances and enables them to participate meaningfully in discussions with their teachers and peers

    Get PDF
Automated writing evaluation feedback (AWE) has become popular in writing classrooms. However, few studies have conducted a comprehensive review of the employment of AWE in learning areas. This study aimed to provide a systematic review of the current research on AWE feedback, including its validity, effects, and students' engagement with AWE feedback. A total of 68 articles were collected from SSCI and A & HCL-indexed journals, which were published from 2008 to 2023. Concerning the validity of automated feedback, some research reported that the accuracy rate of AWE error flagging was inconclusive and students showed more preference for instructor feedback than AWE feedback. Regarding the effects of AWE feedback, most studies supported the positive evidence of AWE feedback on students' writing outcomes. Additionally, some research found less positive and mixed results, highlighting AWE feedback's shortcomings. Most students held positive feelings toward AWE feedback and perceived it as practical under the intervention of students' engagement. This review has made some implications and suggestions for the stakeholders in this field

Bibliometric Evaluation of Publications on Second Language Vocabulary Acquisition (2000-2024)

    Get PDF
While extensive research has explored Second Language Vocabulary Acquisition (SLVA) acquisition, there has been a lack of comprehensive bibliometric analysis on this topic. This study addresses this gap by investigating research trends and collaboration networks in SLVA over the past 24 years. Publications on SLVA were retrieved and analysed using data extracted from the Web of Science, a widely-used research database. Using CiteSpace software, we analysed bibliographic details, including countries, institutions, authors, and keywords, and created interactive visualizations. A total of 3905 publications were identified as of April 2, 2024. The United States led in productivity with 1079 publications, while Radboud University Nijmegen was the most prolific institution with 55 publications. Stuart Webb emerged as the most active author, contributing 29 publications. ‘Vocabulary’ was the most frequent keyword, appearing 1033 times, highlighting its centrality in research developments. The analysis of scientific network maps and keywords revealed significant changes and emerging trends in SLVA research. These results provide meaningful insights and highlight several promising avenues for future exploration in SLVA research

Technology-Supported Distance Learning of Writing in a Low-Interactivity, Low-Literacy Context: Lessons Learned

    Get PDF
The recent pandemic has enabled education stakeholders worldwide to realize the myriad affordances of information and communication technology (ICT) for distance learning. This paper describes lessons learned from an educational design research project involving the low-interactivity information and communication technology-supported distance learning (TDL) of English language arts, particularly writing. Low-interactivity TDL, such as one via datacasting, in which data communication is inherently unidirectional, might not be as engaging as online TDL; however, it is more feasible in areas or countries with low Internet penetration. The project’s practical contributions are the lessons and learning materials that were developed to support the low-interactivity TDL of writing, coupled with results showing improved writing outcomes. Theoretical contributions include the frameworks and design guidelines for developing lessons and learning materials to promote structure and interactivity in the low-interactivity TDL of writing, even in a low-literacy context. These guidelines include the use of dynamic graphic organizers to support the genre-process approach to writing instruction in low-interactivity TDL settings, as well as mechanisms to promote learners’ sense of familiarity with the language, context, and content of the learning materials, which might be especially important in low-literacy situations

Collaborative Inquiry in EFL Teachers’ Professional Development and its Perceived Benefits and Challenges

    Get PDF
Professional development is thought to be most effective when teachers participate and collaborate in groups. The present study was to find the collaborative inquiry role in EFL teachers’ professional development and their perceptions of collaborative inquiry benefits and challenges. In so doing, 185 Iranian EFL teachers were selected by convenience random sampling. The data were collected by Collaborative Inquiry Survey, Professional Development Questionnaire of Teachers, and collaborative inquiry interview and analyzed by multiple regression and constant comparative method. The findings indicated that collaborative inquiry affected teachers’ professional development regarding learning environment, cooperation, and educational planning. Furthermore, nine themes emerged from the analysis of the collaborative inquiry benefits and challenges interviews, namely awareness of colleagues’ interests and educational issues, collegial atmosphere for learning, new understandings and developing interactive activities, feeling confident about pedagogical competence, risk of losing face, unpredictable results, tight schedules, lack of discussion culture, and disinterest in changing (inflexibility). The findings highlighted the encouragement of teachers to be involved in collaborative learning, which has implications for policymakers and school staff

This research proposes an organizational culture assessment tool so that institutions can diagnose and develop a privacy culture. For the established objective to be achieved, this research included both a survey and an assessment, along with 100 market professionals, of the requirements considered a survey and an assessment, along with 100 market professionals, of the requirements necessary for developing a privacy culture. In addition, an organizational culture assessment was carried out in 06 organizations utilizing the suggested tool, the OCAI questionnaire, created by Cameron and Quinn (2011). The assessment allows for knowledge about the organization’s cultural levels, including the current perception of the dominant culture and the future status to be achieved. The results indicated the possibility of using the OCAI to assess the culture of privacy and provided 13 requirements that help in the development of this culture in organizations. As In future work, the author recommends the OCAI form’s application of the OCAI form within organizations through a case study, with wide dissemination to employees or servers. Furthermore, it is important to evaluate the effectiveness of this research’s identified requirements and verify whether they contribute to the desired state’s achievement according to the intended types of culture
