Considerations in Designing and Validating the Diagnostic Inventory for Self-Regulated Language Learning (DISLL): Status of the Process

    Get PDF
This article describes a new questionnaire, the “Diagnostic Inventory for Self-Regulated Language Learning” (DISLL), for assessing self-regulated learning strategies of students of English as an additional language. We discuss self-regulated learning models, evaluate existing questionnaires for assessing language learners’ self-regulated strategy use, and present a rationale for the DISLL. We explain Zimmerman’s (2000) three-phase model, adapted with simplified phase names: planning, doing, and reflecting. Every DISLL phase starts with a brief scenario to help learners judge how often they employ each strategy in that phase. Already completed are a review of the DISLL 1.0 by 18 international researchers, the step-by-step creation of the DISLL 1.1, and the profiling of vocabulary in the DISLL 1.1 to ensure the simplicity necessary for intermediate-level learners. We present an argument-based validation framework, to be supported by piloting the DISLL 1.2 in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Spain, and Poland and even broader piloting of the DISLL 1.3. Statistical analyses will involve quantitative methods, e.g., exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, reliability analysis, and confirmatory composite analysis. At least one site will also use qualitative think-aloud protocols. The DISLL will be released into the public domain for free use after version 1.3

    Get PDF
As a language teacher, teacher educator and researcher, to me the name Rebecca Oxford has always been synonymous with language learning strategies across the world and specifically the theme of its teachability. Rebecca has always stated that the language teacher’s role includes strategy instruction even if it achieves only partial success. Research has focused almost exclusively on how reading comprehension strategies, the focus of this study, can be taught to learners, but the preparedness of pre-service teachers to teach reading strategies has seldom been the focus within initial teacher education programs. The purpose of this study was to determine participants’ perceptions of teaching within a mixed reality simulation environment with a specific focus on the explicit instruction of reading comprehension strategies. A case study approach was utilized, and ten second-year pre-service teachers enrolled for the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree as well as one mentor teacher and one teacher educator were purposefully selected to participate in the study. The results indicated that the themes corresponded with the activities during the different stages of a mixed reality simulation action review cycle and included show and tell, collaborative brainstorming, deconstruction of the core teaching practice, anxiety and disbelief, pause and redo, coaching and feedback and focused reflection

Augmenting Clinical Insights with Computing: How TalkBank has Impacted Assessment and Treatment of Speech and Language Disorders

    Get PDF
Our purpose is to highlight the contributions of TalkBank initiatives to improved understanding of clinical impairments in adult and child speakers and examine remaining challenges and proposed solutions. We review the origins and development of TalkBank initiatives that have targeted a wide array of typical and atypical child and adult populations. In particular, we discuss how such sets of data have given rise to evaluation and validation of traditional measures used to appraise spoken language performance. The durable contributions of AphasiaBank and CHILDES archives are already evident in a body of published research that has re-evaluated, refined and reconceptualized how we evaluate and set therapeutic goals for speakers with expressive speech and language impairments. More recent archival initiatives, such as PhonBank and FluencyBank, are also making impacts. Beyond improvements in basic and applied science in communication development and disorders, archival data are also being used to test and improve accessibility for communicatively impaired speakers. TalkBank has transformed how research in communication disorders is conducted. It no longer relies on small, unshared research ventures that enable limited clinical impact or follow-up research inquiries. Rather, it has enabled large-scale, more generalizable research more likely to spur further research and enable more rapid translation to clinical practice

Updating the Landscape: A Systematic Review of Emerging Trends in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Research

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to analyze the emerging trends in related research in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) from 2020 to 2024 using a systematic literature review (SLR). In higher education, the concept of EAP has expanded due to globalization and internationalization, providing essential language skills to enhance students' learning competency.  After setting the inclusion criteria for selecting papers and following PRISMA, there were 71 papers used for the analysis. The analysis was categorized into various aspects, including valuable information in the related EAP papers (25 lists of Q1-Q2 journals, countries of affiliation, years of publication, numbers of authors, keywords in abstracts, and titles of the studies) and thematic analysis (focuses, types of research, frameworks, research tools, samples or participants, key findings, and suggestions for further studies). From the systematic analysis, it is found that qualitative research is used the most, and the attention of previous studies is pedagogy, instructors, and learner experiences. Interviews are the most used tool for data collection, with sample sizes typically ranging from 11 to 50. Most importantly, the analysis in the suggestion for further studies highlights the investigation of social justices, multimodalities, digital tools, and technological integration in language learning

Generative AI vs. Teachers: Feedback Quality, Feedback Uptake, and Revision

    Get PDF
Generative AI has stormed the education community worldwide. Gen-AI’s potential to assist teachers in providing feedback to students is the focus of the current research. Specifically, the research investigated how similar or different AI-generated feedback was from teacher feedback, and whether there were differences in students’ responses to the two feedback sources. The research adopted a 2x2 counter-balance experimental design (Latin Square), whereby the participants were divided into two groups to write on two topics, receive feedback, and resubmit the revised work. The participants were 60 EFL secondary students and four teachers from a high school in China. All teachers and a Gen-AI bot (ChatGPT) marked and provided feedback on the 240 written samples. The analysis of the 1200 records (240*5) found that the AI-bot’s surface-level feedback was comprehensive, accurate, and similar to that of one teacher. It outperformed the teacher qualitatively and quantitatively in the meaning-level feedback. Overall, teacher feedback received higher student uptake rates, but the difference was small. Students were capable of adopting a variety of strategies to respond to the feedback regardless of its sources. The findings support adopting ChatGPT feedback as a supplement to teacher feedback given to novice EFL writers

County Readiness for eTourism Using Systematic Gap Analysis: The Case of Jordan

    Get PDF
The primary focus of this study is to establish a mechanism for assessing a country readiness for eTourism using two paradigms: systematic review and gap analysis. This assessment will be conducted by applying eTourism technology aspects as the main detriments of eTourism and behavioral aspects as moderating factors to generate a three-level gap index. The systematic review for determining gap analysis will be based on a framework developed in the literature of the eTourism Technology Acceptance Model (ETAM). This study, based on ETAM, develops its own framework for the systematic review. A comparative study was performed on two dimensions. The first dimension involves the examination of technology-related factors, encompassing security, accessibility of mobile applications, support for mobile payments, user interface design, and quality. To improve understanding of how tourists assess the four technological aspects, the second dimension included two moderating factors: attitude and trust. Based on the systematic review, this paper demonstrates a methodology for calculating individualized gaps for the six factors, as well as compounded gap indexes for the two dimensions and the total composite gap index (CGI) for all six factors through the utilization of an Excel spreadsheet. Based on the overall assessment, as the authors deduced from the discussions, Jordan's readiness for eTourism still needs further improvements to its eTourism factors. Future investigations will involve the implementation of a framework, such as Expert Choice, to emulate the methods utilized in this research.  In addition, the outcome of this endeavor should suggest potential avenues for continuous improvement and diversification of eTourism research
