This study is a developmental research that aimed to develop an instructional material to augment the learners' writing skills, specifically on addressing the learning gap on the proper usage of capitalization and punctuations. To determine the level of competence, a researcher-made competence test was conducted to 100 randomly selected Grade 10 learners. The result of the competence test revealed that the learners had a very low level of competence on the proper usage of capitalization and punctuation. The Input- Process-Output (IPO) Model was utilized in the development of the instructional material. The developed material CaP Sheet is a 67-page worksheet composed of three parts: the preliminary pages where the competence test was included; the Unit I which discussed the 10 rules of capitalization; and Unit II which discussed the 10 most common punctuation marks used in writing. The developed instructional material was then subjected to evaluation by five (5) experts in the field of instructional material development, curriculum development, language teaching, and teachers. The evaluation determined the level of acceptability in terms of content quality, presentation and organization, accuracy and up-to-dateness of information, and assessment. The mean and standard deviation were the statistical tools used to analyze the data collected from the five evaluators of the CaP Sheets. The results of the evaluation of the Capitalization and Punctuation (CaP) Sheet on the content quality is highly acceptable with the rating (M = 3.83, SD = 0.38). On the presentation and organization, the CaP Sheet also got a highly acceptable rating (M = 3.76, SD = 0.44). On the accuracy and up-to-dateness of information, it got a highly acceptable rating (M = 3.73, SD = 0.46), and on the assessment, the CaP Sheet also got a highly acceptable rating (M = 3.80, SD = 0.41). In overall criteria, the developed CaP Sheet got a highly acceptable rating with an overall mean of 3.79 and standard deviation of 0.41. The result also revealed that the CaP Sheet, as a supplementary writing material for writing, is interpreted as highly acceptable and met the objectives of the study. With a very good rating on its evaluation, the developed material may be used to augment the writing skills of the Grade 9 learners. The gathered data and results in this study may be used by the schools and administrations as a basis on formulating school program to elevate the quality of education to the learners. At the same time, the results of this study will be useful to both teachers or learning facilitators and learners since they will have additional instructional material to use, targeting specifically the writing skills o the learners

Failed human sexuality education leads to premarital sex and early sexual encounters, resulting in teenage and unplanned pregnancies-hindrances to economic success. This study explored the dialogic dynamics of sexuality education in the classroom, examining teacher-student interactions considering their genders. It aimed to identify the subtleties of dialogue, exchanges, liberal or suppressed inhibitions, and the use of metaphorical and playful language, ultimately generating principles and a nascent dialogic theoretical model on human sexuality education. The research design used was the constructivist grounded theory using theoretical sampling of students and teachers in an integrated SPED school in Kalibo, arranged class observation of human sexuality lessons, in-depth interviews, focused group discussion, audio-video recording, memoing, field notes, and coding. Results revealed that there is a complex interplay between the genders, sociocultural background and other factors influencing the teaching-learning dynamics, shaping the teaching style and molding learning assimilation during human sexuality lessons. Academic interactions on human sexuality between teachers and students across gender combinations highlighted important aspects such as gender dynamics, language choices, societal norms, humor, reactions, and tolerance, affecting the formation of a safe and comfortable environment, unique to each interacting gender combinations, for discussing sensitive topics. Finally, the generated theory, The Dialogic Theory on Human Sexuality Education offers a comprehensive framework emphasizing open dialogue, respect, and inclusivity in the classroom. It highlights the importance of creating a safe environment, using respectful language and humor, addressing and challenging societal norms, taboos, and gender stereotypes, and employing varied teaching strategies to cater to diverse perspectives and individual needs. The study ultimately provided a policy guidance for an inclusive and effective scheme in conducting human sexuality education

Predictors of fecal coliform in Iloilo-Batiano River Basin, Iloilo Philippines

Fecal coliform (FC) is a key water quality parameter and indicator of bacterial contamination from human and animal wastes used by the DENR-EMB on their periodic monitoring of water quality management areas (WQMA) in the Philippines. IBRB is a WQMA classified as a Class C water body, following the standards set by DENR DAO No. 2016-08 and 2021-19. The current study assessed the relationship of FC loading along IBRB with that of other water quality parameters and physical and environmental factors. Mean FC load along IBRB was 6.99 x 105 MPN/1OOmL, over the standard limit for Class C waters. FC was found to have a positive and significant relationship with SAMPLING-POINT (z=.876; p=.O22) and TSS (/=.899; .015); while negative and significant relationships were observed with pH (r=-1.000; p=.000) and TEMP_C (r=-.999; p =.000). Multiple regression analysis further showed SAMPLING-POINT, pH, and TSS highly explains FC load in IBRB (R2=1.000; p=.000); wherein, FC loading increases together with increasing TSS, moving towards IBRB's headwaters, and as pH decreases. TSS was also found to have a positive and significant relationship with rainfall (/=.727; p=.O26), driving TSS loading in IBRB - increasing FC load. The study demonstrated the critical drivers of FC loading in IBRB. This could serve as basis for interventions and improvements on the management of IBRB by the local government units of Iloilo City and Oton by focusing on fecal contamination on domestic waters and water ways along populated areas; securing clean water and public health. The DPWH together with the LGUs may also improve sewage systems to prevent siltation along IBRB most especially during heavy rainfall events, while DENR-EMB could also make use of the results in implementing measures and strategies in preventing possible increase in FC load - focusing on identified areas that needs to have clean water management interventions

Rising from the ranks of the blessed few: Leadership practices of teachers-in-charge as inputs for a contextualized training program

Teachers-in-charge were designated due to lack of school head items and need to be assessed whether they exercise their leadership practices according to the standards of a quality school head. This study determined the instructional and administrative leadership practices of TICs relative to the five domains of the Philippine Professional Standards of School Head (PPSSH) and led to the development of a contextualized training program. This qualitative research design employed descriptive phenomenological inquiry. Through purposeful sampling, five (5) TICs were chosen in Antique to serve as informants. The leadership practices were gathered using a semi structured interview protocol and photo elucidation. Collaizi's Phenomenological Data Analysis was used to interpret the data. Domain 1 with the theme Leading Strategically: Being the North Star had two categories of practices: (1) crafting of the School Improvement Plan and (2) utilizing reliable sources of information to improve school performance. Domain 2 with the theme Managing School Operations and Resources: The steward of school endeavors and fortunes had seven (7) categories of leadership practices: (1) transparency to foster cooperation, (2) utilization of MOOE, (3) proper human resource management, (4) applying the moral code; (5) managing school data and information; (6) solving issues and concerns; and (7) needs development practices Domain 3 with the theme Focusing on Teaching and Learning: The endeavor to keep the heart of education beating had four (4) categories of practices: (1) providing technical assistance to improve teaching practice, (2) validating stakeholders' feedback to improve teaching and learning, (3) providing conducive learning atmosphere, and (4) needs development practices. Domain 4 with the theme Developing Self and Others: Towards continuous improvement of self and people had four (4) categories of leadership practices: (1) enrolling to graduate school and attending to professional development activities; (2) promoting teachers' professional growth, (3) maintaining positive mindset, and (4) barriers to teachers-in-charge professional growth. Domain 5 with the theme Building Connection: Networking for stakeholder's support had three (3) categories of practices: (1) maintaining a harmonious school and community atmosphere; (2) establishing relationship with stakeholders, and (3) solving issues and concerns. The contextualized training program was developed to address the needs development practices of teachers-in-charge and enhance their practices to solve issues and concerns. Through this three-day, face-to-face training program, the teachers-in- charge will be able to embrace their roles as school leaders and develop their capacity to deliver the basic education services according to the standards of a quality school head. In summary, teachers-in-charge practiced shared governance, accountability, and responsibility in leading the school. Delegation of responsibility to teachers gave them time to work with their administrative responsibilities as well as the opportunity to coach and mentor them. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to address the development needs of teachers-in-charge and that not all issues and concerns can be addressed through trainings. It is recommended that aside from the moral support given to TICs, policy makers in the department should develop strategies and streamline processes such as giving of additional assignments to TICs, conduct of trainings and other activities during weekends should not be at the expense of their well-being. This study may serve as a springboard for technical assistance to teachers-in-charge

Teachers' adversity quotient®, organizational commitment, and performance in the post pandemic era: Inputs for an enhanced school recovery plan

    No full text
The world today is facing global crisis which greatly affects the educational system and brings with it various adversities with teachers facing with constant and inevitable changes that may affect their commitment and performance in school. Hence, there is a need for reassessment of the teachers' developmental and anticipated needs in order for them to turn threats into opportunities. This study was set out to establish the relationship between the teachers' adversity quotient and organizational commitment as related to their performance. It was conducted in December 2022 among the 506 randomly selected teachers in the 4th Congressional District in Iloilo. The data were gathered using three (3) published and validated instruments: Adversity Quotient Profile, Organizational Commitment Scale, and Individual Performance Commitment Review Form. Means and standard deviations were used for the descriptive analysis. For inferential statistics, the t-test for independent samples, the stepwise multiple regression analysis, and Pearson's r correlation tests were used with the alpha set at .05 and computations were done through the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software V. 25. Results of the study showed that generally, the teachers' adversity quotient is low while they had an average organizational commitment and a very satisfactory performance. The teachers' Adversity Quotient did not do significantly when they were grouped according to highest educational attainment, length of service and academic rank. The teachers' commitment level differed significantly when their highest educational attainment was considered. No significant differences were noted in the teachers' organizational commitment level and performance rating when they were classified according to their length of stay, and academic ranks. The main effects of the adversity quotient and organizational commitment on teachers' performance were not statistically significant, thus, no significant relationship was noted between teachers' Adversity Quotient, organizational commitment, and performance. The study concluded that teachers during the pandemic grappled with the adversities they faced and this may have influenced them even after the COVID 19. For the average commitment level, it was concluded that the teachers had a strong commitment for their organization but are also affected with factors like over load of work, burn out and other factors. Even when teachers were confronted with unlimited issues at home, in school and in the community, they were able to have a very satisfactory performance. The study recommends that teachers should be debriefed with what they have endured during the pandemic, involve them with physical activities such as sports camp, exercise sessions, spiritual practices, recollections and retreats. Although teachers showed an average commitment level, schools must make sure that it continues to provide support to strengthen it. A pleasant work environment may be sustained with the help of both internal and external stakeholders, and the administration could set up team building programs and collaborative activities to decrease work-related stress. Teachers could also be involved in the crafting of the school plans like the School Improvement Plan, Annual Improvement Plan, the Learning Continuity Plan and other developmental plan for the school and learners. Schools division officials and school heads may look into the development of their programs and projects to improve teachers' adversity quotient, commitment and come up with a Learning Continuity and Recovery Plan which also gives emphasis on teachers being the catalyst of the education process

This design research aimed to develop a Brain-Based Strategic Intervention Material (BSIM) for Integers as a tool for remediation, particularly in Numbers and Number Sense. The respondents of this study were one section of 36 grade seven learners of Lezo Integrated School, four grade seven learners for the interview, and four experts for the evaluation of the acceptability of the BSIM. The data gathering instruments were the pilot testing tool, evaluation rating sheets for the quality assurance of print learning materials, and interview guide. Data analysis techniques employed were frequency count, percentage, mean, and thematic analysis. From a survey that was conducted by the Schools Division of Aklan on the identification of the least learned competencies in grade seven mathematics, from a total of fifteen learning competencies, six of those were considered least learned competency. From this, the topmost least learned competency which is to perform fundamental operations on integers was considered in the study. Reasons for such difficulty included the confusion of learners with the signs and grouping symbols. In response to this concern, a BSIM integrating the distinct features of Tom Lavella's Brain-based Learning and Teaching Strategies composed of title card, guide card, activity card, assessment card, enrichment card, reference card and answer card was developed. As to the overall acceptability of the strategic intervention material in terms of its content, language and layout and format, the experts agreed that the BSIM is highly acceptable. The BSIM met and complied with the standards set by DepEd on Locally Developed Material. The learners and teachers find the BSIM as unique and innovative, simple and direct, and effective for remediation making it a great remediating tool for learners experiencing difficulties in performing operation of integers. It is recommended that BSIM be used in Grade 7 mathematics as an alternative material for remediation

Background: Recently, there has been an increasing concern regarding matters concerning the LGBT community that should not be overlooked. Even though the Philippines is among the Asian nations with strong public tolerance towards homosexuals, numerous individuals still encounter discrimination. And while studies have been conducted elsewhere, the literature is limited among Filipino nursing students. Objectives: This research assessed the knowledge and attitude towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) healthcare concerns among nursing students in the Philippines. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional survey was conducted among nursing students (N=354) in a public university in the Philippines. The Nursing Students’ Knowledge and Attitudes of LGBT Health Concerns was used to gather survey data online in April 2022, and data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 26 software. Results: While a large majority of nursing students had positive attitudes, many had only low to moderate knowledge about LGBT healthcare concerns, although no significant correlation (p = 0.081) was found between knowledge and attitude. There were significant differences in knowledge based on gender (p = 0.049), religious affiliation (p = 0.023), and academic year level (p <0.001). A significant difference was also identified in attitude based on sexual orientation (p <0.001). Conclusions: Certain measures should be taken to address the gaps in the curricular content of undergraduate nursing programs directed at the LGBT topic to deliver culturally competent care grounded in evidence-based practices for LGBT individuals. This research received funding from the West Visayas State University – University Research and Development Center
