Integrating Compassion Into Military Decision-Making: The Contribution of Multidimensional Awareness to the Development of Coping Appraisals

    No full text
2025Decision-making is a fundamental responsibility of leadership, yet much of the existing research focuses primarily on cognitive elements such as knowledge, motives, reasoning, and intentions. Less attention has been given to how compassion is integrated into organizational decision-making, particularly within high-stakes environments like the military. This dissertation in practice explores the relationship between systems-informed coping appraisals and the enactment of compassion in decision-making, as experienced by retired general and flag officers during their active-duty service in the United States military. Using a qualitative, reflexive thematic analysis of leader narratives, the study addresses the research question: How do systems-informed coping appraisals influence the emergence of compassion in decision-making processes among military leaders? Insights gathered through audio-recorded interviews led to the development of a new conceptual model for integrating compassion into leadership decision-making. This model visually and theoretically illustrates how self-awareness, social awareness, and situational awareness converge into multi-dimensional awareness, generating positive coping appraisals. The framework offers a pathway for empowering leaders to act with wisdom, resilience, clarity, and compassion in complex operational environments. Keywords: compassionate leadership, decision-making, coping appraisals, multi-dimensional awareness, emotional intelligence, United States militar

Living Out the Mission: A Phenomenological Exploration of Catholic High School Leaders' Approaches to Mission Integration Through Catholic Social Teaching

    No full text
2025This phenomenological qualitative study examined strategies that Catholic secondary school leaders use to integrate mission across curriculum design, professional development, and student co-curricular opportunities, exploring the role of Catholic Social Teaching (CST) in shaping this integration. The purpose of the study was to understand how leaders embed mission into school culture through practical approaches. The scope centered on leaders’ experiences within diocesan coeducational secondary schools in Northern California. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with seven school leaders, including two principals, three assistant principals, and two deans. Interview transcripts were analyzed using an iterative coding process, which yielded four emergent themes and eleven subthemes. Based on the findings, four practical recommendations are offered for strengthening mission integration, along with opportunities for future research. This study aims to contribute to the broader conversation on Catholic educational leadership by providing insights that may inform future practice, leader and teacher formation, and continued research

Innovative Teamwork: Advancing Sustainable Energy and Grid Modernization

    No full text
2025This document discusses the crucial importance of teamwork for innovation and resilience in the context of sustainable energy and electrical grid modernization. Following qualitative research of practitioners engaged in grid innovation projects, this research pinpointed psychological safety, interdisciplinary collaboration, transparent communication, and empowering leadership as core characteristics for effective collaboration among team members; crucial building blocks to help solve technical, organizational, and policy challenges of the energy sector. The research findings show that strong collaborative dynamics turn obstacles into opportunities and also stimulate forward-looking solutions necessary to meet goals for energy security, reliability, and decarbonization. Interdisciplinary teams are demonstrated as essential to ensuring grid modernization and a sustainable energy future by combining diverse expertise to promote environments where creativity and accountability can flourish. The study suggests that the human element is key—the capability of teams to work together, communicate and innovate—in partnership that actually makes the difference in an energy system innovation success for a successful transformation, rather than technology. To realize large-scale innovation and resilience across those that will be charged with the energy transition to these organizations, institutionalization of psychological safety, cross-functional integration, traceable communication, leadership alignment, and adaptive implementation is proposed as the recommendation to increase institutionalization for fostering these key aspects of transformation to scale both innovation and resilience
