One-step extraction of Cd, Ni, Sb and V applied to the river and accumulation sediments located in Serbia

    No full text
The consequence of elevated values of toxic pollutants, which originate from numerous human activities, is contaminated environment [1]. Rapid development of industry and agriculture contributed to increase in heavy metals in invertebrates, fish and humans [2]. Heavy metals accumulate in sediments over time which might be a trigger for numerous human diseases due to possibility of transport of these metals in water medium and entering the food chain [3]. The aim of this study was the estimation of element contamination level in sediments of the important rivers, accumulation and their tributaries in Serbia. The determination of the sample contents of the 4 elements (Cd, Ni, Sb and V) was conducted by the one-step extraction with inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP OES). Extraction was done with three different acidic extraction agents. Total of 33 samples of sediments from 16 major river and their tributaries in Serbia wereanalyzed. The analyzed sediments showed high concentrations of Cd and Ni, which may have great negative environmental impacts. In sediments from Zapadna and Južna Morava, Tisa and river Pek the highest concentrations of Cd was detected. The concentrations of Ni were above maximum permissible concentration in Vrutci and Zapadna Morava river sediments. Results showed that the content of Sb was low in majority of the samples. The highest content of V was extracted from Barje sediment sample

    No full text
Investigations of ore minerals, and mineralogical studies of the ore deposits in general, are not only crucial for the interpretation of ore-forming processes and genesis of ore deposits but also have a significant impact on the exploitation efficiency and subsequent extractive metallurgy. Additionally, such researches also comprise crystal chemistry and transformation processes in minerals (especially sulphides) and thus providing a prominent contribution to the understanding of presence and liberation of toxic elements in mining waste materials and their impact on the environment. Simultaneously, by the oxidation processes precious metals (Au and Ag) can be also liberated from the sulphides

Geology characteristics of zeolitic tuffes of Serbia

    No full text
Since about 50 years it is known that giant deposits of natural zeolites of pyroclastic origin are spread over all Miocene sediments of Serbia. Such rocks have often zeolite contents between 60 and 90%. The most significant Serbian deposits of natural zeolites are: Zlatokop, Igros, Beocin, Toponica, and Slanci. Based on obtained results of structural, chemical, physical, and thermal analyses, the investigated zeolite tuffs can be generally defined in two mineral series: clinoptilolite-Ca, and heulandite-Ca. The interest for these materials is in steady mass growth as they are of vital importance for Serbian economy. The oversights of perennial mineralogical research of Serbian giant deposits of natural zeolites were presented in this paper

Kaolin modified with cationic surfactant as a potential adsorbent for ketoprofen

    No full text
The contamination of the natural aquatic environment by pharmaceuticals is a serious environmental problem due to their extensive use in human health and animal husbandry. One of the most efficient technique for removal of pharmaceuticals from water is their adsorption on activated carbons, clays and zeolites. In this study adsorption of ketoprofen (KETO), widely used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, on modified kaolin was invesitgated. The natural kaolin (from Rgotina, Serbia) was modified with cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide in amounts equivalent to 50% and 90% of kaolin cationic exchange capacity. FTIR and DTA/TGA were used for characterisation of materials. The obtained data showed that adsorption of KETO by modified kaolin increased with increasing the amount of surfactant, as well as with increasing the amount of solid phase in the suspension (0.5 – 5.0 mg/ml). According to obtained results modified kaolin may be used as adsobent for removal of KETO from contaminated water

    No full text
Graphene (Gr) is a superior material with favorable mechanical and thermal properties, predominately utilized as a component of exceptional composites [1]. In this work graphene-reinforced composite coatings based on hydroxyapatite (HAP) and chitosan (CS), with and without antibiotic gentamicin (Gent) were investigated. Composite HAP/CS/Gr and HAP/CS/Gr/Gent coatings were electrophoretically deposited in a single step process from aqueous suspension on pure titanium foils. Detailed physico-chemical and biological characterization analyses were performed in order to evaluate the influence of graphene on the properties of newly formed composites. The formation of HAP/CS/Gr and HAP/CS/Gr/Gent composite coatings was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. On micro level, composite coatings exhibited porous, homogenous surfaces suggesting strong interfacial interactions between HAP, CS and Gr. Agar diffusion testing was performed against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in order to evaluate the antibacterial potential and possible medical applications of obtained composite coatings. The results indicated excellent antibacterial properties of the gentamicin-containing coating (HAP/CS/Gr/Gent) with a slightly more pronounced effect against S. aureus compared to E. coli. Composite coatings were also subjected to cytotoxicity MTT assay to prove the biocompatibility and non-cytotoxic effect towards MRC-5 and L292 cell lines. Obtained results indicated the high potential of HAP/CS/Gr/Gent coating for use in medicine as a part of bone implants
