Crowdfunding and the internationalization of SMEs: strategic tools and growth paths

    No full text
In recent years, crowdfunding has established itself as an innovative financing tool for businesses, particularly start-ups and SMEs, attracting growing attention in academic literature. In addition to its primary function of raising capital, some studies have begun to hypothesise that crowdfunding may also influence other strategic aspects of the business, including its propensity for internationalisation. However, the link between these two dimensions remains largely unexplored. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the extent to which the presence of international backers in a crowdfunding campaign can be a factor associated with the subsequent internationalisation of the proposing company. To this end, a dataset was constructed containing companies that have carried out a crowdfunding campaign, divided into two groups: those that attracted at least one foreign backer and those that had an exclusively domestic pool of backers. In order to objectively represent the international behaviour of companies, we chose to consider the presence of patents and trademarks registered with European and US offices. The data analysis was conducted using AIDA software to extract financial and personal information about companies, and STATA software for statistical processing and econometric model estimation. The Difference-in-Differences estimations performed show a positive and significant correlation between the presence of international backers and the adoption of intellectual property tools in foreign contexts. The results suggest that crowdfunding is not limited to providing capital but can also act as an enabler of international visibility and credibility for companies, encouraging them to pursue growth opportunities beyond their borders. The thesis thus contributes to broadening the field of study on the indirect effects of crowdfunding and provides useful guidance for entrepreneurs, investors and policy makers interested in supporting the internationalisation of innovation

A fully automated pipeline was created to produce Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) backscatter and interferometric coherence products that are ready for time series analysis. The pipeline was then used for testing SAR wildfire monitoring capacity. The workflow streamlines the processes of data retrieval and preprocessing of SLC imagery by using SNAP operations and Python scripts, resulting in geocoded γ0 backscatter (VH, VV) and repeat-pass coherence that is appropriate for time-series analysis. This method was applied to two Mediterranean wildfires occurred in 2021 (Sardinia, Calabria), Italy. The processing steps for backscatter retrieval included refining orbit metadata, removing thermal noise, calibrating radiometrically, TOPSAR debursting, multilooking, applying speckle filtering, and geocoding the data; the interferometric process involved also co registration and coherence estimation. Backscatter and coherence were analysed by burn severity and land cover classes. Change metrics (such as ∆VH, ∆VV, Radar Burn Ratio, Radar Vegetation Index and ∆RVI) were computed. Backscatter values were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test to assess changes over time and across burn-severity levels. Rainfall time series were included to associate possible moisture change effects to the backscatter analysis. Results in Sardinia showed that VH backscatter was more sensitive to structural vegetation damage compared to VV, displaying noticeable decrease after the fire and larger effect sizes in higher severity classes. Coherence values declined right after the fire and recovered in later image pairs. The analyses by land cover revealed that certain classes exhibited stronger response, although sample size might have affected the statistical tests. In contrast, results in Calabria show less pronounced variations probably due to the lower burn severity. Overall, the pipeline minimizes manual work and standardizes the processes of data retrieval and SAR preprocessing for multi-date analysis

The alpine region consists of a vast territory located at the center of the European continent. Through time it has been the stage of many cultural changes and important historical events, such as wars and infrastructural innovations for instance. Seen commonly as a land dominated by nature, far from the urban centers with a hard accessibility and harsh environment, a bucolic aspect has always been attached to its imagination. Especially up until the XIX century, when modernization made way so that new changes and demands were able to be established, and a shift on the before, almost untouched landscape brought it closer to the reality of bigger cities. From touristic facilities, to new ways of locomotion, this new presence of the “urban” left a longing mark on these places, which by that time had its purpose, but today, in many cases, have already lost its meaning. Having that in mind, rediscovering the Alpine true essence of a contemporary world is crucial to bring back the qualities and complexities that were, for a long time, taken for granted and miscounted since the last two centuries. Understanding this area as more than just a “momentary server” to urban life, along with the new demands it exposes is crucial to keep the culture and environmental values it possesses alive. The work to be carried out consists of the elaboration of a regeneration project of an Industrial area of approximately 32 hectares, which is about to have some of its activities suspended by the government until the year of 2035. The intention is that there is a complete resignification of this area, not only in the various possible new uses that it can offer, but mainly in its relationship with the rest of the city and landscape. The intervention site is located in the town of Borgo Valsugana, a village that belongs to the region of Trentino, Italy. Not only will the immediate surroundings of the site influence design decisions, but also the natural and social configuration of the Alpine region will have a main role in that aspect. In this way, it is expected that there will be a complete understanding of the phenomena that are occurring not only in this particular location but also repeating over in other alpine areas. The idea is that the work is carried out in two main phases. One analysis and research, focused on exploring the configurations of the region of the European Alps and then continuing to scale down until reaching the town of Borgo Valsugana itself. And a second phase, focused on the project and all the pre-studies referring to the basis of its decisions. For the first stage, the use of maps and texts is foreseen in order to establish the foundation of a complete analysis on its historical formation in co-relation to its natural landscape, so that all the information acquired aggregate and support the following design phase. In the second stage of the project, more detailed analysis and conclusions about the dynamics of the city and the intervention site should guide the course of the project that will be developed shortly thereafter. It is important to emphasize that the final purpose of this work is to establish a new vision for this extensive area that is currently on the edge of the city, and to make it connect not only with it but also with the natural landscape of the alps on its surrounding. That way making it useful and improving the lives of the people who live there, always in the most harmonious way possible. In the meanwhile, keeping in mind all the objectives of future developments for other areas of the city which have already been foreseen by the community andmunicipality, since when the time comes for this area to betransformed, significant changes will already have been made in the rest of the city

Magnetic aluminum-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe3O4@Al-MOFs) are being explored as advanced adsorbent materials for the removal of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a widely detected per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) in contaminated water. In this study, microparticle forms of Magnetic metal-organic frameworks (MMOFs) were synthesized using green chemistry principles to minimize environmental impact. The synthesis was carried out via solvothermal and solvent-free methods, using three different ligands: terephthalic acid (H2BDC), amino-terephthalic acid (NH2BDC), and tetrafluoroterephthalic acid (F4BDC), in combination with solvents such as ethanol, water, and DMF. The structural and chemical properties of the materials were confirmed using PXRD for crystallinity, SEM-EDS and TEM for morphology and elemental distribution, FTIR-ATR for functional groups, and BET for surface area. The results confirmed the successful formation of the hybrid materials and their magnetic functionalization. Adsorption performance was evaluated through fixed-time and kinetic tests, as well as multi-cycle adsorption–desorption experiments. Post-cycle PXRD and SEM analysis were used to assess structural stability. The results demonstrated that the ethanol-based solvothermal synthesis, particularly with H2BDC, yielded the most promising adsorbent, achieving a PFOA removal efficiency of 99.8% within a single adsorption cycle from a initial PFOA concentration of 108 μg/L. Despite its relatively low crystallinity, the porosity, accessible surface area, and defects play a critical role in adsorption efficiency. Furthermore, this material exhibited promising reusability over ten adsorption cycles, although a progressive decrease in performance was observed. A regeneration efficiency of 82.9% was achieved, highlighting its promising reusability and the potential for efficient recovery of adsorption performance. The fluorinated sample synthesized via a solvent-free approach also demonstrated excellent adsorption efficiency (95.7%) and was the most environmentally sustainable among the tested methods. In contrast, the amino-functionalized MMOF in ethanol showed lower adsorption performance (76.9%). These findings underscore the importance of selecting the appropriate solvent, ligand, and synthesis route in designing MMOFs for PFAS remediation. In particular, ethanol-based syntheses offer a practical and scalable pathway for effective water treatment applications

Water and migration: the nexus between water availability for food and livestock production, hydroclimatic changes, and environmental migration

DOTTORATOWater is an essential natural resource for establishing and sustaining life, ecosystems, and economic development on earth. Despite humankind's rapid development and technological achievements, millions still lack access to food, energy, and water, and climate change exacerbates the pressure on limited natural resources. As a result, water governance is increasingly recognized as a critical factor in mitigating human-water problems and their socio-political consequences, including forced migration. When water access and quality deteriorate due to mismanagement or inadequate governance, communities may face heightened displacement risks, particularly in regions already grappling with environmental stressors like droughts, water scarcity, and food insecurity. Our study in the following chapters explores the nexus between water resources availability for food and livestock production, hydroclimatic changes, and environmental migration through a socio-hydrological framework that could be used to inform future water governance approaches addressing complex, multilayered and multicausal human-water problems focusing on East Africa. Communities in East Africa have been quite resilient against changes in rainfall patterns. However, when these changes spread to activate exacerbating factors, a holistic view of environmental drivers and their regional interactions is necessary. Our study focused on the crop and livestock production sectors to understand how water limitations associated with drought, agricultural water scarcity, and the consequent food insecurity can relate to environmental migration patterns. The nexus between these indicators and environmental migrations in the region plays an important role in shaping the response of farmers and agropastoralist communities, which account for roughly 80% of the population, to either adapt to the changing environment or depart. Environmental threats to shelter, livelihoods, and food security are often considered push factors for intra-African human migration. Research in this field is often fragmented into a myriad of case studies on specific subregions or events, thus preventing a more comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon. Our research begins with an introductory chapter overviewing some work on water governance and human-water problems. It focuses on the multidimensionality of water’s nature in shaping sustainable development in all sectors by analyzing influential actors working to solve the problems for the past two decades. Then, we proceed to more specific works on the relationship between hydroclimatic changes and migration across a broader study area, Sub-Saharan Africa, and close examination of East Africa for specific mechanisms by which hydroclimatic factors influence migration trends in Somalia and Ethiopia. Despite the growing interest in environmental migrations observed in scholarly literature and the media, the nexus between hydroclimatic drivers and human displacement, conclusive empirical evidence of the relationship remains poorly investigated, particularly concerning the need for more comprehensive data and analyses to understand the specific mechanisms by which environmental factors influence migration decisions and patterns. Furthermore, the following chapters investigate the spatial interaction between the three indicators of the scarcity of water that highly influence East Africa's food and livestock production and primary internal displacement reasons: drought, agricultural water scarcity, and food insecurity. We draw insights from various sources of ground data from our study countries and combine them with remotely sensed climate data, multiple rounds of surveys on environmental migrants and internally displaced people, and socioeconomic development pathways (SSPs) from the Regional Climate Model. We used metanalysis, Qualitative Comparative Analysis, statistical correlation, multivariate spatial autocorrelation and clustering method, and agrohydrological and Persistence Index models to disentangle the complex multicausal phenomena of environmental migration and examine the multifaceted challenges posed by slow onset hydroclimatic extremes on environmental migration by taking account of the time lag of events exhibited before the people feel their effect. Understanding and predicting societal difficulties during global hydroclimatic and environmental changes is crucial, as well as the degree of susceptibility and the societal resilience to adapt and mitigate these changes. Therefore, in the end, we leveraged the above-mentioned methodological approaches to anticipate high-risk regions susceptible to future environmental migration or internal displacement based on climate change (RCP) and development scenarios (SSP). The results across these chapters show that the complex web of causal links are the main drivers of environmental migration in Sub-Saharan Africa, while individual extreme or slow-onset events with high intensity and severity are very critical migration inducers. However, non-environmental underlying factors play a significant role by exposing the population to cumulative environmental changes and hindering their resilience. Multivariate spatial analysis and clustering provide the co-occurrence of scarcity of water indicators is found to be a statistically significant indicator and predictor of human displacement in the region. These results demonstrate that understanding and identifying areas prone to environmental migration flux depend highly on a cumulative driver approach that accounts for the persistence effect (slow onset events) rather than individual drivers. Overall, the research highlights that addressing the multifaceted layers of environmental migration drivers in East Africa requires integrating climate change and migration into policies across critical sectors like agriculture, water, livestock, forestry, and infrastructure to support adaptation.Water is an essential natural resource for establishing and sustaining life, ecosystems, and economic development on earth. Grounds and roofs : morphology and technique for an architectural design facing the climate crisis

DOTTORATOLa tesi “Grounds and roofs. The thesis, Grounds and Roofs. Morphology and Technique for an Architectural Design Facing the Climate Crisis studies how nature-based solutions impact the morphological conditions of horizontal surfaces, focusing on ground and roof design. Nature-based solutions induce the critical reflections of the dissertation, which looks at their impacts on architectural projects. Nature-based solutions are strategies of adaptation and mitigation increasingly implemented to cope with the urgent theme of the climate crisis, explicitly concerning the impacts of climate risks on the built environment. Therefore, the research aims to identify the relevance of morpho-typological figures to conceive effective projects that rethink the balance between naturality and minerality in urban areas. This action enhances the climate habitability of urban fragments, located in areas particularly vulnerable to climate fragilities. To do so, the contribution studies the relationship between the usage of nature-based solutions and the project morphology, addressing horizontal surfaces’ role as typological elements directly connected to climate-risk reduction. In this sense, the research makes explicit a series of morphological structures that impact the implementation of nature-based solutions. Each form of implementation is directly connected to a specific climate risk, producing a design reflection between qualitative and quantitative impact on space. To achieve this goal the thesis unfolds into three main parts. The first focuses on climatic vulnerabilities and the definition of nature-based solutions as a design tool, which identifies vegetation as the primary agent of transformation. The intermediate scale, between the single building and the neighborhood, is identified as a critical extension in which to recognize a measurable impact on climatic risks. The second part highlights nature-based solutions’ ambiguities and “design streams” that have turned vegetation into a purely aesthetical act or, on the other, as technocratic fixes to cope with climate fragility but lacking a cultural depth. From here, the need arises to identify a genealogy of nature-based solutions related to the horizontal surfaces of design. A dialogue is established with selected modernist projects, allowing for a synthesis of possible points of cultural continuity and discontinuity. Finally, the last part of the research focuses on the present, showcasing some European projects where design and climate action have produced morpho-typological modifications, balancing technical efficiency and design thinking. The projects’ analysis is enriched by the study of the operators supporting the design process, highlighting a complex design methodology where the synthesis of precise spatial forms can guide project decisions in response to specific climatic risks. Focusing on the project’s transformation, an approach strongly oriented towards the observation of design practice has been considered essential. Aside from the theoretical-bibliographic investigation, the research is based on an in-depth analysis of case studies and projects. This has opened the possibility of structuring a perspective that identifies recurring spatial themes connected with nature-based solutions. Through the redesigning and schematization of these projects, the research proposes a critical position on the project, identifying the need to re-focus the contemporary debate on the theme of the horizontal level of the city, where this is assumed as the physical dimension on which the project can measure itself in re-establishing spatial relations and care for the territory. In these terms, the horizontal level reveals a privileged action space, considered in its thickness and complexity, for regenerating urban fabrics in response to climate fragilities, thus defining a renewed morphological value of grounds and crownings.DIPARTIMENTO DI ARCHITETTURA E STUDI URBANI36null, nullPROTASONI, SAR

This thesis presents the development of a numerical framework for simulating volumetric growth in ocular tissues, focusing on both physiological eye development and the pathological progression of keratoconus. A finite element approach was adopted to model the mechanical response and growth-driven remodeling of the eye, incorporating patient-specific geometries and material properties. The simulations rely on the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient F into an elastic part Fe and a growth part Fg, a method well suited for modeling soft biological tissues. For the keratoconus case, an anisotropic growth tensor Fg was combined with a degradation algorithm that progressively reduced the mechanical properties of the stroma. This dual mechanism enabled the simulation of cone-shaped bulging and thinning, reproducing key features of the disease. The model was calibrated using clinical data from an 11-year patient follow-up, including curvature maps and pachymetry profiles. Validation was carried out by comparing tangential curvature maps, Belin indices, and minimum thickness trends between simulations and clinical observations, showing strong agreement in both severity and spatial distribution. In parallel, a second growth model was developed to simulate physiological eye development from age 3 to 20. The cornea was assumed to maintain constant dimensions, while the sclera underwent volumetric expansion governed by a sigmoidal growth law. Different material behaviors were assigned to the cornea and sclera, reflecting their distinct anatomical and biomechanical properties. The model was calibrated to reproduce axial length trends reported in the literature, achieving good consistency with reference data. The proposed framework demonstrates the ability to simulate complex, time-dependent remodeling phenomena in ocular tissues and highlights the flexibility of growth algorithms to adapt to both pathological and physiological scenarios

This thesis focuses on the design, realization, characterization and development of mid-Infrared free-space optical communication link operating around 10 [micrometer] utilizing direct modulation of quantum cascade laser`s current aiming for 2 Gigabit for second bitrate over an 800 meter propagation path. FSO system prototype includes the transmitter (Quantum Cascade laser), the receiver (Mercury Cadmium Telluride detector), and a Green laser used for alignment the MIR beam. The MIR receiver is characterized using ultrashort light pulses <150 fs around 10 [micrometer] generated by Difference Frequency Generation (DFG) technique. The measured MIR receiver`s electrical bandwidth is 1.2 gigahertz. The full characterization of the MIR transmitter operating at 9.7[micrometer] with a maximum output power 90 megawatt is also reported using a signal generator up to 6 gigahertz, and its response was measured with the MIR receiver connected to electrical spectrum analyzer. In particular, the bandwidth of the direct modulation of the MIR transmitter is also characterized. This research shows that current technology at 10 [micrometer] is challenging to achieve data rate higher than 1 Gigabit for second over 1 km with these commercial components, so further development should be taken into consideration to enhance component characteristics to meet expectations of 10 Gigabit for second over 800 meters

As part of the renewed international effort to return to the Moon and establish a long-term human presence, ensuring a reliable surface power system is a fundamental challenge. This thesis explores the deployment strategy of a fission-based lunar surface power system capable of supplying a continuous output of at least 50 electric kilowatt (kWe). The system is based on a Kilopower-like heat-pipe reactor, redesigned to use HALEU fuel and scaled to three configurations: 50, 100, and 200 thermal kilowatt (kWth). Six combinations of these reactors are analysed to meet the required power threshold. A detailed assessment of mission logistics is carried out. Ariane 64 is selected as the primary European launcher, with Vulcan Centaur as backup. A preliminary design of a lunar transfer vehicle (space tug) is developed to deliver the payload to the Gateway's NRHO orbit, evaluating three different trajectories and assuming storable bi-propellant propulsion. The feasibility of landing the system using NASA’s Human Landing System (HLS) cargo variants or ESA’s Argonaut lander is also discussed. To reduce the number of launches, different modularity strategies are proposed and modelled as a bin-packing problem, solved using a First-Fit Decreasing algorithm. The results are compared with the full-reactor launch approach to identify mass-efficient configurations. Finally, a preliminary cost analysis is performed by analogy with a NASA study on a reactor with similar features, using the cost-per-kWe as a scaling parameter. This enables an estimation of the total system cost for each configuration. A final discussion highlights the most promising options in terms of logistics, cost, and risk balance

An investigation into the factors impacting supplier-supplier relationships through the lens of social capital

The complexity of global supply chains and the growing need for coordination between actors have highlighted the importance of inter-organizational collaboration. While much of the existing literature has focused on the buyer–supplier relationships have received significant academic attention, this thesis explores the relatively overlooked field of supplier–supplier relationships (SSRs). In order to evaluate these relationships and how they are understood and overall seen in the industrial manufacturing world, the theoretical model employed mainly used for the analysis is social capital theory. Overall, considering the combination of the highlighted factors, this thesis aims to investigate: What do suppliers identify as the main factors influencing supplier-supplier relationships, and how do these factors impact the relationships through the lenses of social capital? To address this literature gap and answer the research question, the study adopts a multiple case study approach based on semi-structured interviews with six companies across various industrial sectors and geographies. Using an inductive coding methodology, the analysis uncovers emergent themes that are interpreted through the lens of social capital theory. The findings identify key drivers—such as project characteristics, industrial constraints and third-party facilitation—that constantly shape SSRs by activating the structural, relational, and cognitive dimensions of social capital. These results are synthesized into a framework comprising five aggregate dimensions. Theoretically, the thesis contributes to the literature on supply chain collaboration and by revealing the mechanisms affecting (directly and indirectly) horizontal supplier coordination. Managerially, it offers a framework that can help practitioners identify and strengthen the relational enablers of inter-supplier collaboration. Limitations include the lack of a quantitative validation of the results displayed and the narrow focus on supply chains within industrial context. Future research could extend these insights to further validate the conclusions found herein while exploring other industries and also seeing the evolution of SSRs over time
