    No full text
Perna viridis (Green Mussels) is characterized by fast-growing, found in large clusters, ‎one of the dominant bio-fouling organisms, native to West Indo Pacific region and ‎commonly distributed along the Southeast Indian and Asian coast. They are found in ‎the shallow sublittoral water up to a depth of 15 m and be able to tolerate an extensive ‎range of environmental situation i.e. tolerate temperatures range of 15-32.5C. Green ‎mussels were collected from the navigation buoy in Manora Channel and brought to the ‎research laboratory. Samples were washed to remove the sand, vegetation, and other ‎particles. Morphometric measurements were measured to the nearest gram. The result ‎revealed that the shell length ranged between 0.60-7.4 cm, the width range between 0.10-‎‎2.9 cm, and the weight range between 0.037-15.549 g. In all morphometric relationships, ‎the validation of the “b” values was significantly different from the isometric value. ‎Significant correlation variation was observed in all variables whereas the highest ‎correlation values were observed in the length-width (n-224, r2 = 0.966) and the lowest ‎was observed in width-total weight (n-224, r2 = 0.85). The analysis of variance (ANOVA) ‎revealed that all variables showed significantly different (DF=1, p<0.000).‎PublishedReferee

    No full text
PublishedNot Know

To evaluate the Vimifos 25 feed, imported from Mexico, and the reduction of ration in Clarias gariepinusfattening were the objective of this work. Three bioassays were carried out according to completely randomized designs with three repetitions. In the first case, the treatments were Vimifosfeed (25 % crude protein, CP and 10,42 MJ/Kg digestible energy, DE) and national feeds containing 10 % fishmeal (FM) (29,2 % of protein and 11,34 MJ/kg of digestible energy) and 24 % FM (33,8 % protein and 12,33 MJ/kg). The results showed better productive performance with national feeds. In the second case, 70 % of the daily ration was reduced with Vimifos feed, obtaining a decrease in growth rates; however, feed efficiency was favored. In the third case, the ration was reduced with the 10 % FM feed, which has a higher protein level than Vimifos feed, to maintain the absolute protein requirement (grams of protein per kilograms of live weight) and the productive behavior of the animals was not affected. The economic analyzes showed a positive effect with national feeds. It is concluded that the Vimifos feed showed poor productive and economic performance with respect to national feeds in Clarias gariepinus fattening and the ration reduction was effective when the absolute protein requirement was maintained in the feeding the animals.PublishedReferee

Growth and Survival of Black-lip Pearl Oyster Pinctada margaritifera (Linnaeus, 1758) in Bamboo and Metal-framed Pocket Net Baskets Subjected to Cleaning and Without Cleaning Conditions

    No full text
The farming of black-lip pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera (Linnaeus, 1758) has been a viable industry for small and large-scale farmers in the South Pacific, but not in the Philippines, where it is monopolized by large-scale farms primarily based on the gold-lip pearl oyster Pinctada maxima. To promote the industry among small-scale players, we simplified the culture method by using bamboo slats as frame materials and compared them to the common material used in pearl oyster culture, metal rods. A total of 400 individuals seven-month-old hatchery-produced P. margaritifera were used as experimental animals, distributed in the following treatments with five replications: T1 (metal-framed pocket net basket with monthly cleaning), T2 (metal-framed pocket net basket without monthly cleaning), T3 (bamboo-framed pocket net basket with monthly cleaning), and T4 (bamboo-framed pocket net basket without monthly cleaning). Growth was fast in the first four months and slowed down after that. Two-way analysis of variance found no significant differences between the average anteroposterior shell (APS) length increments of pearl oysters between two types of frame, and between two cleaning conditions. Survival rates did not significantly differ between types of basket frame, and between cleaning conditions. Parameters of the “Typical” von Bertalanffy growth model (L∞ = 118.41 mm, K = 1.03 year-1, and t0 = 0.12) suggested that oyster would take about 23.16 months to reach 100 mm APS length, a size suitable for nucleus implantation. The life span of bamboo slats as basket frame was half of the metal frame, and the absence of cleaning has reduced the operational cost by up to 82.08%.PublishedReferee

Spatial distribution of variable density in the Gerlache and Bransfield straits during the austral summer between 1979-2019

    No full text
Colombia has carried out expeditions to Antarctic since 2014 with the aim of contributing to knowledge about the white continent and materializing national interests in it. The present study contributes to the understanding of the oceanographic dynamics in the Gerlache and Bransfield straits from the joint analysis of temperature, salinity and pressure information collected with CTD equipment during the Antarctic expeditions carried out by Colombia between 2014 and 2019, complemented with 40-year data obtained from the World Ocean Database. This analysis allowed, through a previous quality control, to calculate and graph the horizontal distribution of the density variable at different standard depths during the austral summer between 1979 and 2019, in order to understand the distribution of the mentioned variable in the study area. The behavior of the density was analyzed, demonstrating through the results that this parameter occurs due to variations in salinity and not in temperature, as occurs at low latitudes. Unlike previous studies carried out in the Antarctic Peninsula for a particular year, in the present investigation a period of 40 years of the southern summer (January, February and March) was selected, with a view to knowing the horizontal distribution of the variable density for different standard depths and to determine the expected conditions, which are an indicator of behavior at a general level in the study area.PublishedNon Referee
