    Beyond homeric papyri. Some remarks on bookrolls of historical epic poetry

    In spite of the deep knowledge and the great awareness about the characteristics of the Homeric papyri, the rest of the epic book production remains quite neglected, or it is considered just for some peculiar elements. This paper aims to reconsider a series of bookrolls transmitting epic poetry with historical subject-matter, dated from early Ptolemaic age to the Imperial period, through an analysis of their physical characteristics (palaeographical aspects, layouts, paratextual elements, eventual signals of peculiar scribal attitudes) combined with a survey of their main textual features. The data thus obtained from both the material and the textual dimensions of the considered bookrolls will allow to try to focus on the possible contexts of circulation and the eventual readership of an almost forgotten and 'submerged' chapter of Greek literature, which, however, maintained a strong appeal for the Greeks in Egypt

    Feature Engineering for Digital Twin Design: Industrial Applications

    Predictive maintenance (PdM) is one of the key points in the Industry 4.0 revolution, and its characteristics of increased resilience, sustainability, control, and human safety are of key importance for Industry 5.0. PdM was already established in most industry scenarios, but the advent of Machine Learning (ML) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies has completely revolutionized the sector. Degradation processes are very complex and dependent on external factors, so constant and sparse data collection enables the Machine Learning algorithm to identify relationships between different data sources, capturing diagnostic information that could not have emerged from a purely physical/technical analysis. In the literature, can be observed many works concerning the generation of new ML techniques or improvements to existing techniques, with a constant desire to overcome some benchmark. However, the real key to the success of an ML application lies in the preliminary problem-setting process, which involves a series of technical choices related to the data collection step and the pre-processing operations required to provide this data as input to one (or more) ML algorithms. This process is called the feature engineering Process, and this industrial PhD thesis will present two main research contexts regarding PdM-related applications in which the feature engineering process was crucial for effective real-world implementation. In the first context, the problem of hardware reduction for smart chemical sensors equipped with AI units for health and quality monitoring will be addressed. The feature engineering process allows us to save hardware resources, evaluate the appropriate classification algorithm, and increase sensor useful life in case of a corrosive environment. The second context regards activities related to two research projects, ASSIOMI and E-ADAPTIVE. Here, a complete physical health management system implementation for a CNC milling machine is presented, detailing all the crucial steps, from the data communication performed by an infrastructure to the data-driven alerting unit modeling (also including the design of the experimental setting for training dataset collection). The activities also include an application of early exiting in Classification Tree inference to decrease the rate of data acquisition operation and an interesting feature engineering solution to preventively detect rotational machine eccentricity faults in the startup phase. Again, the cost reduction purpose of the sensor choice will be addressed by increasing the complexity of the feature engineering process

    New Approaches to Transcodification Literature, Arts, and Media

    This collection aims to renew our perspective on adaptation and intermedial processes by thinking of them in terms of codes rather than media. As a result, the notion of transcodification emerges as a crucial tool in order to study the circulation of semiotic and aesthetic resources across disciplines, knowledge systems, and cultures. Defined as the transfer of meaning-making potential from one semiotic domain to another, transcodification both includes and transcends intermediality, thus dramatically expanding the scope and research potential of adaptation and intermedial studies. The essays collected here apply this framework to an incredibly wide variety of objects and issues, from the relationship between art and historiography to the visual culture of finance, from contemporary approaches to ekphrasis to the hidden labor of screenwriters, from modern surveillance to digital comics, from fansubbing to the reception of the classical world in the digital age, from medieval theater to the role of videogames in the “war on terror”. By fostering dialogue between radically different disciplines, the book offers a unique approach to the study of semiotic interrelations across the most diverse aspects of human culture

    The research work addresses the challenge of energy decarbonisation through the development of processes for upgrading biogas/biosyngas to green hydrogen with simultaneous capture and separation of CO2. The work focuses on the Sorption-Enhanced Water-Gas Shift (SEWGS) process, an innovative approach that combines the water-gas shift reaction with in-situ CO2 capture, thereby achieving improved hydrogen yield and facilitating carbon dioxide separation in a single step. The study pursued three main dimensions of innovation: (i) process intensification for hydrogen production through SEWGS technology, which remains underdeveloped at the commercial level; (ii) the use of biomass as feedstock instead of fossil fuels, to obtain products classifiable as "green"; (iii) the sustainable design of sorbent and catalyst materials according to Green Chemistry and Green Engineering principles. The methodology included experimental laboratory activities at the University of L'Aquila for the synthesis and characterisation of sorbent-catalyst materials, modelling analysis and experimental validation at University College London. The experimental campaign identified two promising materials, 20KHT and MeHT, for SEWGS applications and directly supported the mechanical design work conducted at ITALFLUID COSMEP s.r.l for the development of a lab-scale pilot reactor aimed at process optimisation, establishing a crucial link between laboratory research and industrial implementation. The research results demonstrate that the SEWGS process represents a more sustainable alternative to current industrial practices, enabling the capture of CO2 in a high-purity stream. The integration of this technology with anaerobic digestion and gasification plants fed with biomass further enhances the sustainability of the high-purity hydrogen and CO2 produced. This study significantly contributes to the development of a clean, efficient, and scalable pathway for hydrogen production that is aligned with global decarbonisation goals and promotes a circular economy through the valorisation of organic waste

    Real-world dental health of Ukrainian war refugee children and adolescents in Umbria, Italy: preliminary data

    Background More than two years of the Russian-Ukrainian war have resulted in widespread human and economic tragedy. This crisis also affects health status, including oral health. Objective To carry out an exploratory analysis on the extent of caries in Ukrainian war refugee children and adolescents, and in addition to determine whether there was a statistically significant association between caries and age, gender, periodontal health status (using the Periodontal Screening and Recording (PSR) index), self-reported socioeconomic status and Italian language speaking skills. Methods This study used a cross-sectional design, was conducted in Perugia, Italy at the University Dental Clinic (COU) between November 2023 and April 2024 and included 50 children and adolescents between 3 and 18 years old (mean age 9.2 SD 4.6) with Ukrainian citizenship who had left their home country due to the war. The visits were conducted in the presence of a cultural mediator. The visits consisted of two parts: the administration of questionnaires on socio-economic status and communication skills, followed by a dental examination. A logistic regression model was used to identify the factors independently associated (age, sex, PSR, socio-economic status and level of communication) with high DMFT/dmft values. Results The refugees' mean DMFT/dmft was 3.5 SD 2.5. The multivariate logistic regression model showed that increased PSR (OR 7.71, 95% CI 1.38-22.94, p = 0.020) and low communication (OR 6.09, 95% CI 1.34-27.69, p = 0.019) were independently associated with the risk of having a DMFT/dmft > 4. Conclusions The study findings were worrying in terms of the prevalence and severity of caries, especially in refugee children with a poor level of integration in the host country. This study with its preliminary data provides a starting point to reflect on the need for specific health policies adapted to a complex type of social vulnerability such as refugee children status

    Building Envelope and Non-Destructive Techniques

    The energy retrofit of the building stock is a central topic in Europe, due to the need reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. However, there is a lack of knowledge about the real behavior of the building envelope, due to a lack of information about its component materials and their thermal transmittance value. To increase the knowledge of thermo-hygrometric characteristics of walls, this research proposes an operational methodology to identify reliable thermal transmittance values by applying Non-Destructive Testings (NTD). Through the validation on a case study, the comparison of different methods identified as compatible with the existing building stock was carried out, in particular the Heat Flow Meter method (HFM) and the Quantitative Infrared Thermography (QIRT). The results show the critical issues involved in the execution of each of these techniques, and the potentiality of their combined use to optimise critical situations and adapt to specific cases. The aim is to get to know the real behaviour of the structures, to propose well-considered and effective design choices in the subsequent energy retrofit intervention

    Hormetic Effects of Curcumin in RPE Cells: SIRT1 and Caspase-3 Inactivation with Implications for AMD

    Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE), a component of the blood–retinal barrier, plays a pivotal role in maintaining retinal homeostasis and visual function. Dysfunction of the RPE is an early event that triggers photoreceptor death, in Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), a multifactorial disorder primarily caused by an imbalance between endogenous antioxidant defenses and reactive oxygen species production. Our in vitro study investigated the hormetic effects of curcumin in human RPE cells (ARPE-19), focusing on its capability to modulate two enzymes related to the onset of AMD: Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), a NAD+- dependent deacetylase enzyme involved in cellular metabolism, aging, and stress response, and caspase-3, a crucial enzyme in programmed cell death. Curcumin exhibited classic hormetic doseresponses, with low concentrations (5–10 μM) providing cytoprotection while at high doses (≥20 μM) inducing toxicity. Under moderate oxidative stress, acetylated p53 was significantly reduced, indicating SIRT1 activation; curcumin 10 μM restored basal SIRT1 activity, while 5 μM did not. Both concentrations significantly decreased cleaved caspase-3 levels, demonstrating the anti-apoptotic effects of curcumin. Our results reveal curcumin’s hormetic mechanisms of RPE protection and emphasize the critical importance of dose optimization within the hormetic window for AMD therapeutic development
