    تحت طالِع الأسَد تاريخُ إيطاليَا الإسلاميَّة

n this book, Amedeo Feniello invites us to an exciting journey through the history of Italy during the Muslim presence in Sicily and southern Italy. The author guides us through events forgotten by most readers, especially Arabs. He starts with unfolding the first Muslim raids on the coasts of the Italian inland until Asad ibn al-Furat landed on the Sicilian coasts and confronted the Byzantines who had been ruling those areas. Then the entire conquest of Sicily, which was then ruled by Arab dynasties including Aghlabids, Kalbids (Banū Kalb) and others, until conquered in turn by the Normans. Through the eyes of the tenth-century Arab geographer and historian Ibn Hawqal, we see images of the country, wander through the alleys and markets of Palermo, and get to know its people. The explorer writer Ibn Jubayr takes us to other cities, including Syracuse, Trapani, and Castrogiovanni (modern Enna). Then we witness the verses of Ibn Hamdis, who makes the loss of Sicily unbearable to us, and feel nostalgic for its picturesque lands. Through renowned historians, travelers and poets, Feniello left no aspect of the story untouched. In a narrative style, he amazes us with pleasing scenes and guides us to an area that was once part of the Islamic world, where he left indelible marks in the memory of generations

LA RICERCA DELLA RAGIONE. PROPORZIONI E MISURE NEL RILIEVO DELL’ARCHITETTURA RELIGIOSA MEDIEVALE

Historical architecture is characterised by deep phenomena of modification and stratification occurred over time, witnessing historical events, players, architectural values, traditions and cultures. Design models become tangible through processes rooted in good practice and construction experience, where proportions and measures correspond to ideal values. If the proportional and metrological studies seem to pertain to two independent analyses, in practice they are integrated into a complex knowledge process. In medieval times, architectural systems or construction phases can be based on specific modules and units, with measures that coexist and change, mostly according to local situations. Experience shows that in various cases some measurements appear to be revealing, elsewhere it is appropriate to search for recurring quantities, even considering proportional analysis, always in relation to the construction cultures to which the architectural artifact refers. Metrology manuals can provide useful indications to study specific rules and references, and to understand buildings construction phases. The paper aims to propose a methodological reflection on metrological and proportional study of medieval architecture, rising from experiences conducted in the Italian territory of Abruzzo

“Mind 4 Partner Abuse” Task: Assessment of Cognitive Patterns in Young Adults and Their Romantic Relationship Perceptions

Toxic romantic relationships, a popular term referring to intimate partner violence (IPV) characterized by psychological, physical, and sexual violence, are a growing concern among young people. This pilot study aimed to preliminarily validate the vignette task on IPV, the “Mind 4 partner abuse” task, and to investigate the cognitive patterns and emotional profiles concerning IPV. Our research involved 228 university students from the University of L’Aquila who participated in an online psychoeducational program to raise awareness of the risks of IPV. Participants completed the “Mind 4 partner abuse” task, which included five vignettes depicting escalating violence in relationships. The task assessed participants’ emotional responses (anger, anxiety/fear, sadness, shame/guilt) and cognitive responses (functional-assertive or dysfunctional) to each vignette. In addition, for convergent validation, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) was administered to assess empathic abilities. Five distinct factors were identified: active coping and legal awareness (ACLA), emotional distress (ED), assertiveness and autonomy defense (AAD), assertive reaction and self-empowerment (ARSE), and refusal of public humiliation and dignity assertion (RDA). One factor out of the five, emotional distress (ED), identified a dysfunctional cognitive pattern. The instrument showed a good convergent validity with the IRI. The correlation analysis showed that the IRI personal distress scale was negatively associated with ACLA and positively associated with ED. The IRI Empathic Concern scale was positively associated with RDA. In the dysfunctional cognitive pattern, as measured by the “Mind 4 Partner Abuse” vignette task, the ED factor was positively correlated with anxiety, sadness, shame, and guilt. The potential of the vignette task to identify high-risk cognitive profiles is promising, but it has yet to be confirmed. Given the limitations of the study, the findings offer only preliminary indications of cognitive patterns in young adults and their perceptions of romantic relationships, as assessed through a psychoeducational intervention. Further research with larger and more diverse samples, as well as more robust task designs, is necessary before firm conclusions can be drawn

How inclusive large language models can be? The curious case of pragmatics

    Get PDF
This article provides a conceptual and critical analysis of the role of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), particularly Large Language Models (LLMs), in supporting the development of pragmatic competence in language education, with a specific focus on the Italian language. While GenAI tools demonstrate remarkable capabilities for personalized feedback and interactive instruction, their development is marked by a significant paradox: the very mechanisms that enable personalization are rooted in vast, centralized training corpora that are predominantly English-centric. This linguistic mediation introduces biases that risk distorting pragmatic norms in other languages, threatening communicative authenticity and linguistic inclusivity. This paper explores the implications of such biases for second language (L2) learning, highlighting potential risks to sociocultural communication norms and cognitive development. Grounded in postdigital and socio-material frameworks, and drawing on theories of cognitive extension, this analysis first problematizes the pragmatic profile of LLMs in Italian by critically reviewing the existing empirical landscape, including language-specific benchmarks. Identifying a crucial gap in pedagogically oriented research, the study then proposes a rigorous, multi-phase research agenda. This agenda aims to guide the co-design and validation of a GenAI tool that is ethically informed, pedagogically robust, and linguistically attuned to the nuances of Italian pragmatics. The ultimate contribution is a pathway toward ensuring that GenAI enhances rather than impoverishes learners’ communicative capacities, avoiding the potential for cognitive deflation and fostering a more equitable integration of AI in education

Occlusal Force Evaluation in Growing Patients With Posterior Crossbite: A Case-Control Study

    Get PDF
Objective: The study aimed to assess occlusal force in patients with posterior crossbite using a dynamometer. Additionally, the discrepancies in force between the crossbite side and the opposite side of the arches were evaluated. Methods: The occlusal force of 52 patients with posterior crossbite was measured and compared with that of 52 patients with normal occlusion. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was performed to compare the force of each side. Because the data had a non-normal distribution, to compare the total occlusal force of the two groups, the Mann–Whitney test was performed. Finally, to compare the force between the two sides, using a symmetry index determined by the difference in force between the sides, the Mann–Whitney test was used. Results: In the group of patients with crossbite, the crossbite side showed greater occlusal force than the opposite side. The total occlusal force was lower in the crossbite group than in the control group. Conclusions: In patients with posterior crossbite, an alteration in occlusal force, characterised by a higher value on the crossbite side than on the opposite side, was observed. In addition, these patients showed lower total occlusal force compared to the control group

Observations on the Frequency of Sightings of White Sharks in the Population of Gansbaai, South Africa, in the Presence of Cage Diving

Shark ecotourism is an ever-expanding reality, with hundreds of thousands of tourists involved annually. Although it represents a fundamental tool for sharing the urgent need to safeguard sharks with the public, the implications for the health and well-being of sharks must be taken into due consideration. In South Africa, cage-diving has been an important form of ecotourism since the 1990s. In Gansbaai, over a 14-year period from 2009 to 2024, excluding the 2020–2021 pandemic years, data was collected from cage diving operators’ boats on the frequency of sightings of white sharks. After approximately 560 h of field observations, averaging about 45 h per year and about 9 h per year between 2023 and 2024, 423 sharks were observed with five re-sightings. We highlighted that the number of sightings did not increase during the presence of cage diving operators and that site fidelity has not been observed by white sharks frequenting this area
