Experiential Learning for Citizen Developers
Citizen developers and low-code platforms considerably change how software is created because the development of business applications transgresses the boundaries of organizational IT departments. With these changes, a new generation of developers must be trained. Such training is considered the responsibility of higher education institutions that enthusiastically adopt practice-based and experiential learning approaches. At the core, the focus is on real-world experiences and practical problem-solving, albeit with growing concerns about limiting deep learning and metacognitive reflections. Ample educational research highlights that metacognition is essential for students to be workplace-ready, but very little research has investigated the impact of practice-based learning on metacognitive reflections. This study draws on experiential learning theory to examine the influence of experiences in a low-code systems development project on metacognitive thinking. In a quantitative study using a survey, the effects of experiential learning factors (i.e., authenticity, active learning, self-relevance, and utility) and a team-based learning factor on metacognitive reflections are tested. Results show that when citizen developers create business applications, the experiential learning factors positively impact metacognitive reflections. However, team-based learning only positively moderates the relationship between self-relevance and reflections, whereas it negatively moderates the relationship between authenticity and reflections. Taken as a whole, the study's contributions suggest that practice-based learning using low-code platforms under the citizen developer method is an effective way to train IT talents with needed context and life-long self-learning skills
A Comparison with On-Site Inspections
Immersive digital twin systems offer new opportunities for spatially rich documentation in domains such as property insurance. This paper investigates their applicability in professional claims assessment workflows. We focus on AssureXR, a browser-based VR system that enables remote exploration, annotation, and measurement of 3D scans captured via mobile LiDAR devices. In an expert user study, we compared AssureXR to the commercially established Matterport platform as well as the conventional method of damage assessment on-location. Fourteen insurance professionals worked on three real-world water damage cases using both systems, performing representative assessment tasks. The evaluation combined task-based usage, time and cost estimations, the AttrakDiff questionnaire, and qualitative feedback. Results indicate that both systems supported core assessment tasks effectively and were generally well accepted. AssureXR was valued for its domain-specific integration and spatial flexibility, while performance and usability issues were also noted. We discuss the implications for adopting immersive tools in professional insurance contexts and identify areas for further refinement
With the expansion of renewable energies and the market ramp-up of electromobility, new energy industry challenges and requirements of different user groups are emerging in the area of private and semi-public charging infrastructure. In order to solve current challenges in the area of charging infrastructure, such as limited availability or inflexibility in the use of renewable energy sources, the integration of digital technologies is essential. Digital platforms as modular software architectures for the operation of applications for intelligent charging processes and advanced analyses of energy consumption and generation data can make a contribution to grid stability. Against this background, this paper presents the concept of an IoT platform for charging stations with an integrated service store for the flexible expansion of functionalities by third-party providers. Based on the Action Design Research approach, three expert workshops were conducted to identify key functionalities and boundary resources. The results show that a successful IoT platform for charging stations requires standardized interfaces, clear governance structures and balanced ecosystem management. The integration of IoT technologies with a manufacturer-independent service store enables innovative business models and better user centricity. At the same time, challenges in the areas of data security, interoperability and legal frameworks were identified. The work contributes to an understanding of the technical and organizational requirements for IoT platforms in the context of connected electromobility and their implementation. The findings are relevant for platform operators as well as for developers of digital services and charging station manufacturers
A comparative analysis of the conditions and ecosystems for digital startups in Europe shows that the Scandinavian countries frequently occupy leading positions. This article therefore examines how successful strategies from Scandinavian entrepreneurial ecosystems can be transferred to the DACH region to improve the chances of success for digital startups. Based on a study of 160 digital startups from Norway, Denmark and Sweden using Qualitative Comparative Analysis, three key success factors are identified: Team size, network structure and access to financial resources. The analysis emphasizes that the success of digital startups strongly depends on the combination of these factors, with specific configurations varying depending on product complexity and target market. It is shown that complex products for specific target groups benefit from intensive co-creation, while simple products for the mass market can be successful through strong networks and diversified funding sources. At the same time, it is shown that Scandinavian startups benefit from flexible labor markets, informal networks and an established startup financing culture. However, due to structural differences, such as formalized labor markets and more conservative financing cultures, the findings cannot be fully transferred to the DACH region. The empirical results from Scandinavia are therefore translated into practical recommendations for founders and designers of entrepreneurial ecosystems in the DACH region

Process Mining Success Factors and Their Interrelationships
Process mining—a suite of techniques for extracting insights from event logs of Information Systems (IS)—is increasingly being used by a wide range of organisations to improve operational efficiency. Despite extensive studies of Critical Success Factors (CSFs) in related domains, CSF studies tailored to process mining are limited. Moreover, these studies merely identify factors and do not provide essential details such as a clear conceptual understanding of success factors and their interrelationships. Through a multi-phased approach (applying published process mining case studies, conducting two in-depth case studies and expert interviews), this paper presents an empirically validated process mining CSF model and CSF interrelationships. This validated CSF model identifies ten process mining CSFs, explains how these factors relate to the process mining context and analyses their interrelationships with regard to process mining success. The findings provide a guide for organisations to invest in the right mix of CSFs for value realisation in process mining practice
The availability and quality of metadata are key success factors for the effective use of Open Data. However, incomplete or inconsistent metadata significantly hinder the discoverability, interoperability, and reusability of open datasets. This paper examines the extent to which open-source Large Language Models (LLMs) can support the automated generation of high-quality metadata. Based on the Data Catalog Vocabulary (DCAT), a prototype is developed that integrates open-source LLMs into the upload process of Open Data portals. The evaluation using real Open Data datasets demonstrates that the generated metadata often aligns with expert assessments, particularly improving consistency and categorization. However, challenges remain in the precise temporal classification of data and scalability across various data formats. This paper discusses methodological and technical optimization opportunities and provides insights into potential improvements regarding scalability and temporal classification of metadata
