The Effect of Interaction Language on Preferences for Communication Repair Strategies in Digital Voice Assistants (DVAs): A Comparative Study

    No full text
As digital voice assistants (DVAs) become increasingly prevalent, understanding user preferences for communication repair strategies across various language contexts is crucial. Previous research has focused on conversational user interfaces, but seldom on how interaction language and user characteristics such as prior experience and computer self-efficacy influence these preferences. This study quantitatively explored the impact of interaction language on repair strategy preferences in DVAs using a pairwise comparison method (N=99). Findings indicate that while apologies and direct repeat requests are favoured by both native Arabic (AL1) and non-native English (EL2) speakers, EL2 speakers show a stronger preference for confirmation strategies due to linguistic limitations. Additionally, explanations for breakdowns are more favoured by native speakers; however, qualitative insights reveal that the preference of this strategy depends on context and its timing within the interaction sequence. These results underscore the need for tailored repair mechanisms to enhance effective and personalized DVA interactions

Beyond "Just" Text: Can an AI-Generated Graphic Novel Enhance the Reading Experience of Non-Native English Readers?

    No full text
Despite its well-documented benefits, reading literature in a second language remains challenging. Graphic novels, by integrating text and images, effectively support English as a Second language (ESL) readers; however, adapting literary works into this format is resource-intensive and lacks scalability. To address this, we developed a LangChain-based pipeline that automatically transforms a story into a graphic novel. Through a user study with 76 participants, we investigated (1) how this adaptation influences ESL readers' comprehension and narrative engagement, and (2) readers' perception of AI's role in the creative process. Results showed no significant differences in comprehension or engagement between the AI-generated graphic novel and traditional text. Although 70\% of participants recognized AI involvement, attitudes toward its role as illustrator were generally positive, despite a few cross-domain concerns. This work contributes to the understanding of AI-powered storytelling from a human-centered perspective, identifying key insights for effectively supporting readers through AI-generated visual narratives

Digital Divide in the Context of Sheltered Workshops: Challenges for People with Disabilities in Transitioning to the General Labour Market

    No full text
The transition of people with disabilities from sheltered workshops to the general labour market is a central goal of inclusive employment policies. In the context of ongoing digitalization, the question arises as to what potential digital technologies offer for this transition – and what challenges organizations face in this process. Despite political efforts, structural barriers remain, particularly regarding the acquisition and application of digital skills. Based on qualitative interviews with managers from various institutions in a sheltered workshop, the study identifies several key challenges: Digital affinity in sheltered workshops heavily depends on individual staff members; there is a lack of central points of contact, structured training programs, and strategic concepts for digital transformation. Moreover, assistive technologies often go unused – not due to irrelevance, but because of limited awareness, time constraints, and financial limitations. The findings show that the development of digital skills is essential for enabling participation in the general labour market – both for professionals and for people with disabilities. The research highlights the need for systematic support, practical skills development, and stronger networking between workshops and companies in order to promote digital inclusion in the long term

Shared tasks are powerful tools for advancing research through community-based standardised evaluation. As such, they play a key role in promoting findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR), as well as transparent and reproducible research practices. This paper presents an updated overview of twelve shared tasks developed and hosted under the German National Research Data Infrastructure for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (NFDI4DS) consortium, covering a diverse set of challenges in scholarly document processing. Hosted at leading venues, the tasks foster methodological innovations and contribute open-access datasets, models, and tools for the broader research community, which are integrated into the consortium’s research data infrastructure

    12. Workshop Mensch-Maschine-Interaktion in sicherheitskritischen Systemen

    No full text

AI in Healthcare Professions - A technological fix in the area of conflict between staff shortages and responsibility

    No full text
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) offers great potential for reducing the workload of nursing staff, for example through AI-supported documentation, chatbots, or predictive systems. However, these developments go hand in hand with the challenge that in care new technologies must be introduced in parallel with ongoing operations, as existing systems for patient care and seamless, legally compliant documentation must remain available. This can only be achieved in a participatory manner and based on the experience of nursing staff. For them, this results in additional workload. Against this backdrop, there is a risk that AI applications in nursing will involve more effort than benefit and thus only represent a “technological fix". The implementation of AI applications can benefit if nursing staff have application-related, in-depth AI skills and the perspective of nursing staff is also taken into account. For this purpose, an orientation framework for AI in nursing is being created. This combines AI competence profiles derived from a scoping review of international literature on AI literacy in nursing, links them to the fields of action in everyday nursing, and thus establishes a practice-oriented reference point for competencies and AI models. Given the prevalence of AI applications in nursing, the self-image of nursing staff is taken into account by empirically identifying areas of action in which the integration of AI applications in nursing is appropriate.

Towards Creative VR Workspaces: Investigating Effects of Room Size and Object Presence on Creativity

    No full text
Creativity is increasingly essential, especially as automation and artificial intelligence replace routine tasks. Previous work suggests that the physical environment, for example, room size and object presence, might influence our creativity. Virtual Reality (VR) enables working in any environment and thereby allows optimizing the environment to foster creativity. Previous research on creativity, however, did not systematically control room size and object presence. As their isolated effects are unclear, we explore the effects of room size and objects on creativity in VR. Participants completed an alternative uses task in small and large virtual rooms that were empty or filled with objects. We found that the presence of objects increases subjective creative performance but found no effects of room size or objects on objective creativity. We derive implications to enhance the subjective experience in creative VR workspaces and discuss that the effects of room size might be smaller than previously thought

Geschlechtsspezifische Unterschiede im Fach Digitale Welt aus den Perspektiven des Dagstuhldreiecks

    No full text
