    Towards (More) Effective Visualizations for Process Discovery

    Visualizations in process mining are essential for communicating results to users and for enabling informed decision-making. However, so far, the existing visualizations are often not tailored to the specific process mining tasks, difficult to interpret, and struggle to show the process complexity of the underlying event logs. Furthermore, the user’s perception of the visualizations is rarely analyzed. Researchers have acknowledged the need for suitable visualizations and the consideration of the user’s cognitive perspective to improve the organizational insights gained from them. This dissertation aims to address this need by (1) empirically evaluating existing visualizations to identify potentials and limitations, (2) developing new visualizations, and (3) empirically testing the effectiveness of these (new) visualizations to support process discovery tasks

    For many years, modernizing existing systems has been a significant challenge for many software organizations. The challenge remains as every modernization project needs to be tailored to the underlying legacy system. The study presented in this paper aimed to supplement the published findings by identifying positive and negative influencing factors and general aspects of modernization projects. The goal was to provide a basis for practical guidelines on what actionable items can be used to improve the work of modernization projects.     Der 27. Workshop Software-Reengineering und -Evolution (WSRE) fand vom 9. bis 11. April 2025 im Physikzentrum Bad Honnef statt. Der WSRE ist seit vielen Jahren die zentrale Reengineering-Konferenz im deutschsprachigen Raum. Die Themen des WSRE erstrecken sich auf die Bereiche Software-Reengineering, Software-Wartung und -Evolution. Darunter verstehen wir prinzipiell alle Aktivitäten rund um die Analyse, Bewertung, Visualisierung, Verbesserung, Migration und Weiterentwicklung von Software-Systemen

    SeeME: A General, Reusable Graph Schema for Data Preprocessing of Eye-Tracking Data

    To track eye movement over time and to gain information about points of interest through fixation data, eye-tracking is used in a wide range of fields. In this paper, we present a general, reusable approach to store eye-tracking data and to realize data preprocessing tasks in-database. To achieve this, a graph databases graph schema for any eye-tracking data, consisting of 1) a time series data level and 2) a meta level is developed. Follow-up experiments or additional data like demographic data can easily be integrated into the meta level of the general schema. We use Neo4j to implement this general graph schema. To prepare the time series data for machine learning tasks we additionally present a modular in-graph-database preprocessing pipeline, empowering researchers to either compare different operators or select the best fitting one. For each preprocessing step Cypher code for at least two preprocessing algorithms for time series are at hand

    Wie technologische Faktoren Ambidextrie in Software-Projekten beeinflussen

    Organisationen machen große Anstrengungen zur Verbesserung ihrer Ambidextrie, d. h. ihrer Fähigkeit sowohl Exploitationsziele (z. B. Effizienz, Vorhersagbarkeit) als auch Explorationsziele (z. B. Anpassbarkeit, Innovation) zu erreichen. Obwohl gemäß der Praxisliteratur Technologie in Software-Projekten dabei eine zentrale Rolle spielen kann, gibt es kaum Forschung dazu, wie technologische Faktoren Ambidexterie in Software-Projekten beeinflussen. In dieser Studie untersuchen wir die Rolle dreier technologischer Faktoren: kontinuierliche Integration, Standardisierung und Microservice-Architektur. Die Ergebnisse einer Mehrinformanten-Umfrage in 95 Projekten in der Schweiz und Dänemark zeigen, dass kontinuierliche Integration und Standardisierung mit höherer Ambidexterie einhergehen, während der Zusammenhang zwischen Microservice-Architektur und Ambidextrie nicht signifikant ist. Unser Artikel geht über die existierende Forschung hinaus, indem er zeigt, dass kontinuierliche Integration und Standardisierung nicht nur Exploitation, sondern auch Exploration fördern können. Wir diskutieren auch Gründe für den insignifikanten Zusammenhang zwischen Microservice-Architektur und Ambidextrie. Organizations are making substantial efforts to improve their ambidexterity, i.e., their ability to achieve both exploitation goals (e.g., efficiency, predictability) and exploration goals (e.g., adaptiveness, innovation). Although the practice literature suggests that the technology used in software projects can play a vital role in this regard, there is little research on how technological factors influence ambidexterity in software projects. In this study, we investigate the roles of three technological factors: continuous integration, standardization, and microservice architecture. The results of a multi-informant survey of 95 projects in Switzerland and Denmark show that continuous integration and standardization are associated with higher ambidexterity, while the relationship between microservice architecture and ambidexterity is insignificant. Our article goes beyond existing research by showing that continuous integration and standardization can promote not only exploitation but also exploration. We also discuss reasons for the insignificant connection between microservice architecture and ambidexterity

    "Then I clicked something" - Helping Users to Report Security Incidents with Digital Identity Wallets

    The European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDIW) introduced under eIDAS 2.0 will offer individuals a user-centric method for managing and controlling their digital identities, mirroring the principles of the self-sovereign identity model. By giving users control over their data, the digital identity wallets reduce reliance on identity providers and address privacy concerns in federated identity management systems. However, the adoption of these wallets introduces new challenges. Since users self-sovereign control their data, they could also play an important role in security incident response processes. However, current identity wallets lack user-friendly mechanisms for reporting security incidents, and research approaches do not target this issue. Hence, in this paper, we propose a step-wise conceptual design for reporting security incidents within a wallet. We first explore possible security incident response processes before defining suitable categories based on six expert interviews. Related to these findings, we present mockups that include a gamification element that was tested in a small qualitative user study. By giving the user guidance in reporting incidents, they gain more control, and that may increase trust in the wallets

    Elastic Compute in SAP HANA Cloud by Example of SAP Integrated Business Planning

    The disaggregation of compute and storage in cloud computing environments provide cloud database management and processing systems such as SAP HANA Cloud with new design options like elastic resource scaling that can only be leveraged in the cloud. The elasticity of resources allows for more cost-efficient processing for the system vendor and more cost-control for the consumer. Existing challenges with resource over-provisioning can now be avoided by applying only the resources necessary to the task at hand. In this work we describe the architecture and discuss design decisions of HANA’s Elastic Compute Nodes (ECNs) by example of one of SAP’s central business planning applications in the cloud, SAP Integrated Business Planning (SAP IBP), requiring economic viability and scalability of a stateful service, and show SAP IBP’s unique challenges and benefits in cloud environments through ECNs

    Novel Deep Learning Approaches for Analyzing Diffusion Imaging Data

    Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) is developing into one of the most important non-invasive tools for clinical brain research. This development is supported by a project funded by the German Research Foundation, in which four major obstacles related to dMRI data were addressed: (1) the lack of transferability of dMRI data between clinical sites, (2) the lack of training and label data, (3) the potential of complex diffusion data, and (4) the integration of spherical signals in neural networks to improve accuracy. To overcome the problem of different MRI systems producing slightly varying data, the project developed a method for harmonizing MRI signals. To address the issue of limited ground truth data, a framework was developed to synthesize individual diffusion data and complete datasets based on important diffusion characteristics and statistics. The integration of complex signals, often discarded during acquisition, to improve reconstruction was also explored. Finally, new methods were developed to preserve the spherical character of the diffusion data in the DL model. The resulting methods are intended to improve the usability of diffusion imaging data and to enable the creation of processing pipelines for dMRI data in clinical studies and clinical practice

    Investigating the effects of embodiment on presence and perception in remote physician video consultations: a between-participants study comparing a tablet and a telepresence robot

    Increasing life expectancy and low birth rates have led to a larger aging population requiring more care, especially in rural areas. Information and communications technology may enhance older adults’ quality of life and digital health services. Assistive robotic systems, especially telepresence robots, are increasingly used in healthcare. These robots represent a significantly higher embodiment level than tablets, as they can provide the remote person with an additional body. This work explores the effects of different embodiment levels in video consultation, focusing on Presence and Perception from a Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) perspective. For this purpose, between-participants experiments were conducted in which 18 participants assumed the role of the patient and engaged in a video consultation with a remote, medically experienced person acting as the physician. A shortened medical check-up simulated the real assessment. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected during and after the experiment focusing on presence and interaction. Results show no significant influence of embodiment level in a video consultation from a HCI perspective. However, a trend towards more natural communication with stronger embodiment was observed, suggesting it may positively influence interaction
